Y’all must have just gone out and done this drive the week after I did. Going from Neuschwanstein to Linderhof was such a treat. I definitely recommend the Ammerwald Alm, just short of the Austrian/Germany border. Just a cozy little place with great food and even better service.
If you want to try another scenic road then try driving from Brannenburg to Bayerischzell and on to the Schliersee. But drive via Sudelfeldstraße/Tatzelwurmsteaße. It's a toll road (didn't know Germany had them!) but it's only 3 euro and so so worth it! We came across it by accident and how lucky we did! Would check weather conditions first.
We were in this area in September visiting Oberammergau where my mother taught at the NATO school in the 1950s. We used your previous videos to plan out what to see in the area. Our itinerary included walking the path to Unterammergau, driving this beautiful road to Schloss Linderhof, and visiting the Ettal Abbey where we picked up some beer (I recommend the Kloster Dunkel). Thanks for the great ideas!
Last year I took the train from Garmisch to Reutte in Tirol Schulzentrum, walked up past the Stuibenfälle, took the panoramaweg around Plansee and Heiterwanger See and picked the train back to Garmisch up at Heiterwang... So technically doable by train 😉
We were in Germany in September with a car and I started to have regret seeing this title having not being able to take advantage and do whatever this drive was. Imagine my surprise when I realize we happened to drive this road between Highline 179 and Garmisch-Partenkirchen! The views were truly stunning. The description of the driving as technical is also spot on, because yikes 1.5 lanes in the mountains with mostly local drivers is not for the faint of heart. I’d still recommend this drive in a heartbeat.
This is the new imprved Car-Ben. Although it is a bit cheeky to call it the best road in Germany while being in Austria most of the time. But it is a lovely road. I am one of those campers you talked about and stayed at that campsite for a week for hiking the gorge, swimming in and paddeling Plansee and it is most beautiful here in easy reach of Munich with hardly any International tourist and the road is brilliant. If you want a pretty driving road entirely in South Bavaria, here you go: you leave Minich exiting at Grünwald, go across to Dietramszell, have a beer at the monastery beer garden at Reutberg near Sachsenkamp, then move down to Gmund am Tegernsee, across to Hausham ( wich is a bit ugly, but never mind), then take the road to Bayrischzell and the Pass over to Oberaudorf. Then you can take the Motorway back to Munich. I loved the Flohmarkt. It is quite funny what traditional Bavarians have dangling in front of their trousers. But as you said, most of these chains are very beautiful and are given from father to son and that over many generations. It was again great watching your new video. What was the name of the restaurant by the way? I also was thinking back to your 2nd Video about those cracy castles and that frightening bridge. I really have to go there some time.
Thank you thank you! I like new and improved car ben. Wow that's very cool. I didn't expect to hear from someone who had stayed there. It seems so small and niche. We will try to take that route the next time we drive. We've been to all those towns, but only ever by train! The restaurant was at the Froelle Hotel, just before the road turns to run along Plansee. it was fine. Thanks for watching!
Hi guys, we did this road in September and it certainly was a very scenic drive …. even in the freezing cold and pouring rain, and we are from Australia and love to find the non touristy places.
The Plansee is amazing! I you want to avoid the road there is a really nice cycle path up from Griesen (close to Garmisch), you can either take the train there or cycle from Garmisch. The Plansee road gets really busy in summer and with this bike path you come from the other side and you'll never have to touch any road. But as you said, if you are interested in a scenic drive, the road is the way to go.
@@NearFromHome Yeah, it's definitely a proper ride. Elevation wise it's similar to the Eibsee but it's a lot further. So if you're not used to cycling, an E-Bike is probably the better option.
You missed Linderhof Castle, which is located at the road to Plansee. Plansee in the summer has an intense turquoise colour which really makes it lookong spectacular. I guess in the Black Forest in the German Federal Stete of Baden-Württemberg there are several roads, that are equal fun to drive. For examle the road from Badenweiler to Schönau in the Valley of the river Wiese or the road from the Munster Valley up to Wiedener Eck or to the Schauinsland Mountain.
We did Linderhof last summer during our bike trip. I was wondering if I should mention those videos again but didn’t as I was worried I was plugging the old videos too much.
No better road to drive in Germany than Austria. wait, what?! :) You could try the Rossfeld Panoramastraße (B999). It is a (toll) road above Berchtesgaden. Of course the best bits are technically in Austria as well. And, there is no oncoming traffic. But that is an explicitly touristy road and has been built for that purpose.
Yeah, please go there, would love to see a video of yours with this road! We've been to Berchtesgaden this September but unfortunately everything was closed due to the snow😢
I'm currently in Füssen until Thursday and than Thursday and Friday staying in Garmisch Partinkirchen. I saw a video of you both in Mittenwald doing a beautiful hike and walking across a high wooden bridge which I will absolutely do but was wondering between the Abby in Ettal and Schloss Linderfoff which one you guys enjoyed more? Trying to decide which one to do.
Saya Like video anda karena tersedia bahasa Indonesia. Danke...😊. saya terkesan dengan Negara German dari saya Sekolah Dasar. Semoga anak ku yang no 2 & no 3 bisa meneruskan s2 di German.
Your 5 months to late. We were in Garmisch in May, and then drove to Rothenburg via the Schloss Linderhof. We had planned to go to Ettal but nixed it at the last moment.
let's be honest, dude. you are a little anti-car. i don't think this video quite made up for it. you still have some work to do. a nurburgring in a 911 video, perhaps? then you'll be fully forgiven.
Worked in Garmisch for 6 years, so seeing some of the great sights in and around the area takes me back...
glad to hear it! :)
Camille’s reaction for the flea market stop was adorable
Btw - I drove in Crete up switchbacks to the Lisithi (sp?) Plateau and the lack of guardrails and a wide road had my palms sweating the entire way up.
lol thank you
hahahah I feel like that is every driving experience in Crete. I can't think of a single road that didn't make me nervous
Funny that we were seeing this today! We were just at Kloster Ettal 2 days ago! We are in Schwangau now and on our way to Lustenau tomorrow.
lol cute!

lol unfortunately the video would not have done well had it been called 'Austria's Best Road'

thanks so much! That is a hard choice! I think we liked Linderhof he most! However, Ettal is very close, and not very big, so you could maybe do both?
