  • The Galleria at White Plains is an old urban renewal mall that has been through quite a bit over the years. However, after losing it's two anchors, it seems the owners are ready to call it quits & bring fourth a new vision for the mall property.

Excellent tribute to a mall that is leaving us way too soon. You captured the aesthetics well. Glad I got to see it last year myself. The Galleria at White Plains will be missed.

"Terrible '20s" is an appropriate name. Very sad and unnecessary that the entire mall has to come down for another mixed-use center. It looks really nice on the inside. Awesome video!

I remember being there the day The Galleria opened, went w/ my Mom & a friend of mine. The opening had Jackie Zeman & Tristan Rogers, both from "General Hospital", slated to appear that day (I don't know if they were ever really there), though we arrived later in the day & missed them. Until that day, we had never seen a "food court". Unreal, all that food in one place, lol. We moved away to NC in '84 & I never kept up w/ the goings-on there after. I don't think I'll ever go to another mall, as all 3 of the ones from my life are now either demolished/redeveloped (the old New Rochelle mall & the Cary Towne Centre), or are soon to be closed (Galleria). You did an excellent job covering Cary Towne, Doomie, & that's the video that brought me to you & your channel. You did the mall justice w/ this video, Doomie, so thank you, & well done.

I know what caused it to decline. After Simon sold it due to a thriving mall nearby known as The Westchester, the property slowly began to decline with stores pulling out in favor of The Westchester and other nearby malls, and the glass elevator was red tagged and shut down in 2018.

I live near by in the story town of Sleepy Hollow NY and have been to the galleria many times since I was born and always enjoyed it too, and remember the mall doing their annual santa and easter bunny photos as well as many others. I often remember going to what was KB-toys in the mall for my toys as a child as well as when old-navy first opened a store here in NY in the galleria (with a converted display trolley!) and going to the gap for clothes shopping. I definitely will miss it and hope the Palisades manages to outlast this anti-mall market and continue to stay strong.

The Galleria was my hangout even though I lived in Yonkers. There were a LOT of good memories made here, and I miss that feeling - even though I guess a lot of that was the US pre-2001 vibe a lot of older Millennials feel before major responsibility, life, and the increasingly worsening world settled in on us.
Especially after its redesign it was a much nicer mall, and the only people who hung out at The Westchester were the rich kids from Scarsdale and Bronxville, and you really felt like you didn't belong if you weren't wearing high end designer stuff. It's a much colder feeling mall, while the Galleria felt... down to earth, and not in a bad or condescending way.
There was also the Cross County Mall, but Cross County was desperately trying to return to the fetid swamp it once was before it was rebuilt, even though that was the mall of my youth. Of course, then as now it was always taking a big chance to eat there, lol. You'd know what I mean if you saw the tunnels and basements of that place, lol.
Edit: You're not wrong btw. That elevator has been closed for a VERY long time. I think at least a decade.

Will miss it as a staple growing up in white plains. Heading home from high school and grabbing all the free samples at the food court, to terrorizing the adults patronizing the mall as teenagers do. Down to picking up linkin park’s meteora album from the former Sam Goodie in the “pit” where the train store is now.
The mall itself sits on two super blocks that are underutilized and the architecture doesn’t play nice with the city as a pedestrian that frequents and visits family still living in white plains. - I’m ready for it to go as a white plains native.

This mall was always a mixed bag. During the early 2000s it really was at its peak with the stores actually being filled with customers and the place looking good. Years of looking like the remains of a college party and the external death of retail kind of put a nail in the coffin when multiple other shopping centers now surround it. Concentrate on putting some big stores in the new development, restauants. Close the road in the middle and maybe make it a lit outdoor seating area to chill. Maybe 4 good stores may work there. Lean on free parking though. DMV should be there. City wants make mpney but also is alittle greedy. Things are more expennsive so people are spending less

At some point "convenience" is no longer a "fun" thing like a visit to a mall. When Main St retailers didn't have what was available, there was the mall and that was okay in my mind. If that happens, that is just astonishing to me; only having a few malls per state. I do have a question about the anchor spots...were both of them four level anchors in size?
