In the 1990s K Mart tried to compete with Wal-Mart super centers by creating larger versions of their store, known as Super K Mart. There was one in Warren Ohio.

We had a superstore here in Arnhem, the Netherlands when i was a kid. Now recently we have Smyths Toys superstore, but i don't like it as much as a did toys r us, toys in 90s where cooler imo

Malls should not be dead. They’re not in horrible condition and literally even retro and very old malls that have been reasonably renovated and updated over the years are always should always be enjoyed by people what’s happening is the market changed? Globalist and businesses have changed incentives to online certain of these towns don’t support a necessary demographic Bus, the mall became too expensive for the kind of business they were generating in the changing of times in those specific locations. It’s not mall themselves are going out of style. The economy dried up in this overall isolated big expensive pieces of real estate like that that dependent on a lot of people consistently buying as prices continually went up in certain areas of the state particular in Connecticut ,

A few malls used have those skylights but they were covered up during updates. Boy that mall is a time capsule

My dad had a store in a mall from 1971 to 1983. I grew up there, had my first job, and second job, at the mall and ate most of my meals in the food court or if I was lucky..York Steakhouse! I miss those days but happy they happened

This is the true consequence of doing shopping online. A real shame that convenience has outweighed the shopping experience. All those jobs lost, its really sad.

Amazon happened . Walmart happened. Malls are starting to go away. Although I go to West Farms it is still very active.

90s was peak mall experience loved going to the mall as a kid now everyone does online shopping Amazon/Ebay etc.

I grew up 2 minutes down the road from this place and spent a lot of times school shopping, walking through with my parents to hanging out with friends throughout the years. Kind of gives of a sad/lonely vibe seeing it like this after knowing what it used to look/feel like in the prime.

We have a mall here in NJ in a similar state. Most of the stores are gone, the food court is empty, the escalators are not running, and they would not have the AC on during the summer. It's actually quite sad, not sure why they stay open at all.

So completely sad, what has happened to this mall. I am 58 yrs. old-a little older than you, Tom, but we share the very same interests, with malls and flea markets. Have lived in central CT all of my life. I really miss the browsing everywhere-which, thanks to online retailers has made this experience largely a thing of the past. 😢. I’ll try to keep this short…but do love to reminisce. I was only about 6 years old, back around 1973, when my parents, grandma, and I used to go here regularly for 20+ years, mostly up until the final late 1990s renovation-which imo made it way too big….Back in the early 1970s, this two-story, two-anchor-store mall was the primary indoor mall in central CT up until WestFarms was built, a few years later. For us, the simple, initial layout of Meriden Square was the perfect size. As a little boy, I used to love looking down over the central railing at all the activity on the floor below. Unquestionably for me, the *absolute highlight* of our trip there was the original Child World, which was huge. It occupied both floors, directly outside of (I think) the G.Fox entrance, on the left. (It later turned into a gym). Child World downstairs was mostly baby furniture. Child World *upstairs* was a dream come true! 😊 It was the biggest toy store anywhere, predating the Toys R Us chain. I think that it closed around the mid-1980s. What a sad day. 😢. Within Meriden Square, I also really enjoyed Waldenbooks, Spencer’s, Jo-Ann’s Nut House in the center aisle, and the ice cream parlor (with retro light fixtures outside) near the middle of the mall, toward the later Sears wing….we will never have these days again, sadly. I miss them so much, but they are fun to look back on. Thank you, Tom, for these wonderful videos. I enjoy these explorations as much as you do. 🙂

I wouldn't be surprised to hear foreign investors have these storefronts rented as money laundries. Nobody's gonna fly in from Beijing to check if there's actually a store.

Malls are dead now because of the simple reason. Why would you go out to shop and deal with tons of people when you can order online and have it shipped to your door? And the prices online are actually cheaper because there’s no retail overhead. The only stores safe at this point are cell phone stores and anything you can’t easily get online which is very little. It’s sad but it’s the truth.

I remember growing up, going to westfarms and experiencing the forest cafe. That was a time to be alive.

Meanwhile 20 minutes north of here the West Farms Mall is so packed you can't even find a parking spot and traffic is backed up adding 30 minutes to your commute.

Even 11 years ago that mall was doing ok, I used to go there on my lunch break and walk around in the winter, as it was too cold outside to walk, with online shopping malls are just a thing that is slowly going away.

Its was the closest and the only big box store besides big grocery stores in my city, you'd have to drive to the next city over to find a Walmart. We shopped at that Kmart a lot. Most iconic things I remember as a kid from there is the little food area by checkout that had those big tall clear bags of popcorn and the ICEE machines, the toy isles that were next to seasonal toy isles (winter/summer) that had a fantastic selection of the biggest names in toys/cartoons at the time. That specific store, its layout, inventory and shopping trips for specifics.. is forever carved into my mind.

I was there today and it was absolutely packed . It usually busy on the weekends anytime I’ve been there on weekend days know matter what time of year it busy but today reminded me of old school days I use to live close to it go to Trumbull mall

Beautiful looking mall. But very sad to see barely any people there, especially for a Saturday at this time of year. There are other malls that are thriving, and so I am convinced that these malls that are suffering are the results of very poor management. Whether they are charging inflated rent, or not advertising enough, there is simply no excuse for this other than bad management.

There used to be a tiny arcade next to the gym before the stairs the theater. Before that it was fairy hop gift shop

Thats sad.. best buy, dicks ect all closed. Its crazy cuz that used to be one of my fav malls when i was a teen.

We are all responsible for this. Shop local for everything. Don't buy online at all. If you can't get it locally, get them to order it, or go without.

I wish the mall could come back. It used to be crowded, so why the closings? Rent too high? I love Boscovs. Hope they never close up. And the mall is such a nice mall. Shame to tear it down.

In 30 years when all the big box stores are gone people will be saying the same thing, "Oh what a shame. I remember all the beautiful rows of merchandise at Wal-Mart and Home Depot. Oh me oh my!"
