    It's not emasculating, it's self pride. Take it from one that has the late stages of Primary Progressive MS, it's pride. I don't want my niece & Nephews and my siblings seeing me like this. It's pride and anger.

    tbh. there's no right or wrong in that intervention scene that's why it's so good. we can disagree with skyler all we want but you need to put yourself in someone's shoes with a dying spouse. no one will just give up on their love ones even though they themselves are giving up.

      Eh. Skylar's expression of her feelings is fine. Skylar's very clear expectation that Marie and Hank parrot her perspective and outrage they did not - even though Marie shared a perspective that is important to hear and compassionate for her patients - is wrong IMO, although as you say it's understandable. It creates the impression Skylar's purpose with the intervention was to weaponize the group to make Walt listen to her, not to create an opportunity for people who care about Walt to share their own feelings.

    • @jerodast
      @jerodast 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The whole premise of the show is creating a situation where it's understandable for a man to do some things that are very very wrong. And sometimes he's sympathetic and sometimes he's not. In this case Skylar is only slightly wrong and I do have sympathy for her in this scene (perhaps more than A&M), but she can still be criticized for how she acts.

    This is the episode that really defines Walt as a character for me and just how ludicrous his "doing it for his family" excuse for entering into the violent drug trafficking industry is. He is not willing to swallow his pride and accept money from the Schwartzes for his family, but he is willing to enter into an industry where grotesque violence is a regular consequence of doing business. This early point was where he really became irredeemable for me. Walt was never really good. He was just subjugated. His pride is his most defining trait.

      I never subscribed to the thought process that Walt has always been an Evil man that just didn't get the chance to be Evil until now, I feel it defeats the purpose of the story of him literally "Breaking Bad", he is just flawed like every other human being out there, his Pride is always his undoing, I know A LOT of people who would turn down the offer of the Schwartz's if they were in Walt's place, he wants to get himself out of the problem he finds himself in, but his salary as a Teacher and the damn near criminal health care system pushes him to a life of crime using the only tool he has, his knowledge in chemistry. (SPOILERS)............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ and even then a number of times throughout the series he tries to get out of the life but every single time he is roped back in, his Evil truly comes when he becomes addicted to the notoriety, the fact that he is the best in the world in his craft, when he becomes "The Danger", "The One Who Knocks", when he sees the drug world as a game he can say to "I Won" and the nail in the coffin when it becomes not about the money for his family, when he already accumelated far more than the goal he set for himself, when he was in "The Empire Business", by then his goal has shifted from helping his family before his death to living the life he believed he deserved.

      Evidently, Walt pre-cancer was used to getting walked over on the job & at home. He realizes that he is a push over & it took cancer at the age of 50 to finally make a change. It's an over correction though, & the reason why he is breaking bad. Lesson...don't be a "nice guy" & learn early to standup for yourself.

      I don't think anyone's saying he's always been evil deep down or anything. Just that the pride and ego that drives him to be how he is later on didn't come out of nowhere, it's always been festering there and he's just finally giving it a chance to take the wheel.

    The drinking age thing in the USA always baffled me. You have to wait till 21, but at 18 can vote, have a gun, serve in the military etc. In my country it is 18 for everything, why to complicate things...

    • @IsaacAbunu
      @IsaacAbunu 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I agree, the main reason why they push back the age was because so many 18 yr Olds got drunk and crash their cars in the 80s.

    • @oldscratch3535
      @oldscratch3535 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Drinking isn't a constitutionally protected right like gun ownership and voting.
      And you have to be 21 to buy a handgun. 18 for a rifle. You can still own both at 18. You just can't actually buy a handgun until 21. One can be given to you as a gift or an inheritance. That's probably about to change though as some recent court decisions have found it unconstitutional to preclude 18-20 year olds.

      The success of our nation and the freedoms we enjoy create an atmosphere where one does not really ever have to grow up, if one doesnt want to. The change to the "21 years old to drink" law was a compromise of several other good ideas and suggestions the lawmakers settled on in an attempt to curtail the tragic deaths of so many young people and innocent victims.
      If you join the military, you are allowed to drink legally on base, Im told.
      Sometimes the laws that get made make as much sense as the behavior they try to eliminate.

    Refusing treatment is crazy but idk what I would do if I was in the situation and someone offered to pay. Its fucking lifelong debt as well. Sure the guy can say they do it to help you out, but in my experience people always bring favors back. It might take 10 years but it will come back in some way. So on that front I understand refusing + his ego doesn't seems to be ready to accept the humiliation. Also, in the US, having insurances is soo fucked that without it, the load on the family looks unbelievable. If the chances are so low, idk if everybody should still try.

      I know exactly what I would do. If the chances of survival were very low then I wouldn't do anything. I'd just live my life waiting to die. I don't think I'd even tell any of my family. I'd tell my one close friend so he could check in on me every day just to make sure that if I die I don't sit and rot inside my house for a month before anyone realizes I'm dead. Its common for me not to speak to any of my family for weeks at a time.

    The best thing is the underlying thing of the intervention - especially him coming back the next morning. The dude just wanted to be heard. He wanted the *ability* to decide for himself. The second he regained his power, he was able to give himself to his family. But he had to *have* control to *give* it - also women, this is the masculine mentality in a nutshell.

    Remember everything we've seen so far is from Walt's POV. In episode 1 he is the Science Guy who is being bullied by everyone. Ignored by his students, yelled at by his carwash boss, nagged by his wife for being late to his own party and for using the wrong credit card for buying printer paper (which is followed up by the most pitiful hand job in history), bullied by his alpha brother-in-law who even suggests Walt is not man enough and the steals attention from Walt's birthday to show everyone his exciting drug bust.
    We are shown that he participated in research that led to a Nobel Prize and he once had the self-confidence to woo and marry a lovely and intelligent woman. But when we meet him he has left the running of the household to his wife and seems to have given up on asserting himself in the larger world.
    Skylar is shown as more assertive because he appears to have given up on this role completely. Look at this from her point of view: She is an intelligent woman in her 40's who recently discovered she is carrying an unplanned baby, and finds that her husband has apparently quit his 2nd job without telling her, but is still away from home for a lot of hours that he won't tell her about. When he comes clean about his cancer and that he doesn't want to treat it, she now faces raising 2 kids without his income, and he hasn't indicated at all that he has plans beyond just dying (she doesn't know about his secret plan to finance the family after his death with drug money. He then receives an offer of a job that will pay better than teaching high school, with better benefits and turns it down. Then turns down an offer of simply having his treatments paid for.
    What we know about Walt is that he's placing his personal pride above everything, including his family, to cook meth. What she sees is a man who is willing to skip treatment and die rather than try to have more time with his family. And on top of that, she sees this man choosing to die quickly without any attempt to leave his wife, his teenage son, and his unborn daughter with anything beyond a life insurance payout, a meager SSI death benefit, and a mortgage.
    Is she trying to influence his decision? Yes, but she is the one who will have to live with it. And then watch what happens to her world as Walt continues to cook.

      They're once a week just like most TV shows have been since TV shows have been created. You can go well into the second season right now if you wanna pay for it. If you don't why the complaining for a free product?

      @@mormacilWhat an asinine response. You're acting like he's watching TV episodes for free. He isn't. He's watching reaction videos on TH-cam. Very different. I can watch actual Breaking Bad episodes whenever I want to and when I do it and don't do it is absolutely none of your business.

      @@firegod001exactly. It’s free. If you pay for their Patreon, they’re already through most of season 2 I’m pretty sure. You’re really getting entitled about a TH-cam channel?

      I haven't said one single thing that is entitled. Something that really is going on in here is a couple of pompous douches are going around acting like you can't have a valid opinion unless you buy something or peddle it. This is TH-cam. The video was posted here and the comments are here. TH-cam has commercials that they benefit from and we are ALL TH-cam CUSTOMERS. You are not special.

    You have to understand with Walt that men would rather be dead than be deadweight. Accepting charity can be very demeaning. It means that we wouldn't couldn't solve our own problems and we are less than equal

    I'm glad you understand why Walt was upset at Skylar. She (a woman) doesn't really understand Walt's ego being damaged by an offer from someone he could have shared a million dollar company with. Skylar sees help as help, and can't fathom why Walt would refuse help.
    Remember a main theme of this show is masculinity.
