Global National: July 16, 2024 | Toronto hit by major flooding, thousands without power

  • On tonight’s top story: Canada’s largest city was hit by a torrential downpour on Tuesday. The intense storm dumped so much rain on Toronto, it turned highways and streets into rivers, snarling traffic and knocking out power to multiple neighbourhoods - including the city's downtown core.
Former U.S. president Donald Trump announced Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his running mate Monday, as the Republican National Convention (RNC) opened in Milwaukee. Vance was once a fierce critic of Trump but recent demonstrations of loyalty have scored him the ticket. Jackson Proskow has more on Trump’s pick for vice president.
Plus, days after the attempt on Trump’s life, concerns over politicians' safety in Canada are being raised as well. Mercedes Stephenson reports on the RCMP’s struggle to bolster the ranks of officers tasked with protecting them.
There are renewed calls for a complete overhaul of British Columbia’s foster system, following a devastating report into the death of an 11-year-old Indigenous boy in 2021. The details into his death are disturbing, but investigators say they must be shared. Neetu Garcha explains.
Canada’s Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland is facing tough questions about her political future. Anonymous sources quoted by the Globe and Mail suggest there is tension between the Prime Minister’s Office and Freeland over her performance and handling of the economic file. Mackenzie Gray reports.
And, Health care was front and centre on day two of the premiers’ annual meeting in Halifax. There is intense frustration over the state of the health-care system. And as Heidi Petracek explains, people are demanding their leaders find solutions.

Yeah those climate and arson clowns call it summer when the heat breaks records and when it snows a few metres they say winter. When it rains like this they can’t say anything other than blame someone. If it’s not federal they go down the line. Not saying they’re ain’t corruption. Just saying they blame and don’t acknowledge the weather extremes are coming faster and more frequent. Our insurance goes up and adds to the prices which are already too high. Tariffs don’t help

I have a room for rent in Vancouver. The rent is high because my landlord demands a high rent. I have had mostly renters from foreign countries, non Canadian citizens, who have figured out how to tap into our Medicare system for medical treatment (cancer treatment in one case) and had the Canadian government subsidize their rent. One guy got treatment here, moved back to his country once cured and then came back when the cancer came back. He stayed at my house for approximately 6 months before he died. Then his family had the nerve to ask me for a donation so that they could bring his body back….. Is that news worthy???
I on the other hand have a 2 year wait for knees while I try to figure out how to work and pay taxes to my ever hungry government.

The major scam we have here in NZ with our politicians....is the massive waste of tax payer money from 'so called' budgeted requirements...I look at the job vacancies especially in the management field for the city of Auckland....There are over 60% of the management jobs unfilled all above the $150k mark....unfilled, and unpaid, yet the city budget takes these salaries into account...and every year councillors come back to the Ratepayer for more and more money...what happens to these unpaid salaries?......this is the kind of wilful mismanagement of Taxpayer dollars that puts all of our services in jeopardy....They are so busy scamming the Taxpayers, they loose track of what they are supposed to be doing....providing goods and services to the taxpayers...not looking after themselves....

Climate change is about extreme weather events happening more often than usual. It's not necessary to believe everything that climate change activists say because they tend to exaggerate in the same way that climate change deniers do. That doesn't mean that we should not make an effort to look after the planet in reasonable ways. There is plenty of middle ground between climate apocalypse and climate change.
The properties lost to floods and fires have to be rebuilt. Some insurance companies in the United States are not renewing homeowner policies in riskier areas. Since we're going to pay a price, wouldn't it make more sense to spend that money on mitigating climate change instead? Even if you don't directly suffer from the storms, you will notice the increase in food prices.

A warming world means more moisture in the atmosphere. For every 1 C of warming there's 7% more moisture in the atmosphere. Atmospheric moisture has increased since 1976 and the increase is directly related to human-caused climate change. The implications of too much fossil fuel CO2 emissions in the atmosphere are profound and far-reaching for everyone! One of the biggest impacts has been the disruption of what scientists refer to as "hydrologic stationarity." Hydrologic stationarity refers to the relative stability of the hydrologic system, the stable system which we've built our entire world civilization on. Climate change (caused by too much fossil fuel CO2 emissions in the atmosphere) has meant a loss of hydrologic stationarity.
      Let that sink in everyone!

Was this a lack of maintenance of Storm Drains or do they just need to bolster up the barriers or dig out the river to make it deeper? They all need to have a Class Action Suit for all the damages that have ensued. Have they been asleep with the maintenance? If so they need a real Wake Up call.

What's happening across the world is alarming! And it's not normal. But people are still not paying attentions and praying for God's mercy to falls through for humanity, because they are so preoccupied in the sphere of life. Then, they put God in their storage rooms somewhere. But there will be darker days ahead of us until we take the necessary steps to repent and turn our lives around to make it right with the most high God. 😔 ❤
