  • Singing is categorized as an anthrophony. This is Gana, one of our in-country partners during my study abroad in Mongolia 2015. He, my other Mongolian instructors, and the nomadic families we encountered on the steppe were always sharing songs. After long days of setting transects to count marmot feces, setting camera traps for pallas cats, and creating ethograms of Prezewalskis horses, it was common to gather in the gers, break out the Russian vodka, poor it into tea cups, and sing together. In these moments it was never more evident to me that music is a powerful way of inviting strangers into your culture. ⠀
