I love S1apSh0es video for the 1992 Hooters 500. Best ever put out on that race. Worth the time if you’ve never seen it. Another honorable mention for Atlanta was Morgan Shepard’s dominance at that track. Most noteworthy was his 1986 win for Jack Beebe in the #47 Buick. Held off a very hungry Dale Earnhardt.
One of my favorite memories also ties to the tragic 2001 Daytona 500. An often forgotten story line was that this weekend was the return of Dodge to NASCAR and they did it by qualifying 2 cars on the front row. Personally, this was memorable for me not only because I was a life long Bill Elliott fan but, also because my grandfather had worked for the Penstar company back in the Lee Iacocca days.
I've been to Atlanta before and after they reconfigured the place (ARCA), even days after the Tornado damaged the track. It was also used in "Smokey and the Bandit 2", "Six Pack", "Stroker Ace", among others
I've been going to AIR/AMS since I was a kid in the 70s. It was always a great event, but the traffic used to be horrible. I remember when Bill Jr directed traffic because we passed him in the road 😂😂😂 I've met many drivers there over the years from Jody Ridley to Richard Petty. I forgot to mention the movies filmed there. Nice catch!
@@ronniewatkinsthis is incredible! I wish I could have made it to the pre 1997 configuration. I love Dover and it sounds like it was just a bigger version of it!
I was at the Bristol Night race in 2021 a hundred feet away from Chase Elliott pointing in Kevin Harvick’s face. It was insane while watching Kyle Larson did doughnuts in the front stretch. That entire battle in the last 20 laps was incredible and was my first NASCAR Race!
Another great video! Here are some Bristol moments that I think will find interesting: 1985 ValleyDale 500-Earnhardt wins, driving last 400 laps without power steering. Plus the first telecast at Bristol for ESPN. 1987 ValleyDale 500-Earnhardt wins after controversial contact with leader Sterling Marlin just past halfway. 1989 ValleyDale 500-Rusty Wallace wins with a then record 20 caution flags. 1990 ValleyDale 500-Davey beats Mark Martin in a photo finish. I'm sure there are many others, these are ones that I don't think will be suggested nearly as much, but hold just as much historical value.
Got two memorable moments from Bristol from races I was at, both in 2021, the finish of the Xfinity race where Allmendinger took the checkers sideways and got wrecked after the win, and then the Chase Elliott v. Kevin Harvick feud the next day
The 2019 night race at Bristol Island was pretty interesting with Matt and Hamlin battling in the final laps and Matt's emotional speech after the race my second honorable mention is is when not Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth fight in 2005 and also Kevin Harvick and Greg biffles fight in 2002 too Not to mention Dale Earnhardt and Terry labonte's incident at Bristol and also Denny and Joey's into the 2013.
Also more history about Atlanta Speedway. In the 70's I think 1975, there was a large wrestling card held on the front stretch. Ron Fuller talked about it in his podcast. It was very interesting.
I think a good memorable moment at bristol for me was when Robbie Gordon ran into and pushed Dale Jr’s car out of the way and Dale giving that scathing interview right after.
Memorable moments for me Earnhardt vs labonte(both years) Gordon’s bump and runs on rusty Gordon shoving kenseth Michael waltrip busch series wreck in the 90s
Good video. One thing though when discussing the track itself and configurations, it would be nice to see real life photos/videos of the changes. Also would like to hear unique info about the racing surface compared other tracks and racing lines (ie: I do believe Atlanta was always notorious for shredding tires)
IT'S BRISTOL BABY! My mentions are.. Bristol 2022 Goodyear was caught with their pants down, resulting in tire blowouts. Though the tire blowouts were terrible I thought this race was pretty good!
You have to include Rowdy getting the CoT it’s first win in 2007 and when he got M&M’s final win last year and when Dale E and Terry B duked it out for the lead not once but twice
Fun fact for people people not aware Atlanta was meant to hold the season finale in 2001 but 9/11 postponed New Hampshire (2nd race) to Black Friday 11/23
I have some moments for me like Michael Waltrip scary 1990 crash and also Mike Harmon scary 2002 crash and the race in 2018 where Kyle Busch got into Martin Truex Jr and he took out J. J. Yeley as he spane.
The track had to get repaved in 2021 because the surface was literally broken but I wish they didn’t have to turn it into a superspeedway. I’m eager to see how the racing would be with the current configuration with the regular intermedia package
Being honest I don't see the current configuration of Atlanta staying long. Reason why is bc aside from it looking like a miniature superspeedway it still has the immediate setting towards it. Year one you had mini Daytona, year two you have a mixture of Charlotte and homestead and it's showing. It would be a good move if nascar put the immediate package for Atlanta but we have to wait and see how it plays out
I would have rather had the old renderings of the New Atlanta then what we have now. Looked to be more symmetrical and would have made it alnost like a asphalt dirt track due to how the asphalt ages here, and would have also looked more like the older version of Atlanta
Didn't Dale, Jr. coin the phrase, "It's Bristol, baby!"? The 2004 Sharpie 500 is perhaps the most memorable moment to me, being a Dale, Jr. fan. Other moments: 2021 Bristol Dirt Race 2020 All-Star Race 1995 Night Race 1999 Night Race 2005 spring race (specifically the Big One) 2006 spring race ("can't stand to drive these things, they suck" - Kyle Busch) 1994 Goody's 250 (Mark Martin pulls into victory lane a lap early, handing the victory to David Green)
Memorable moments in Bristol 2021 AJ Allmendinger wrecks Austin Cindric for the win 2021 Kevin Harvick vs Chase Elliott feud 1995 and 1999 Dale Sr spinning out Terry Labonte 1990s Michael Waltrip terrifying crash in Busch series 2012 Matt Kenneth helmet throw
Here’s a suggestion for like terrible crashes, Larry Pearson and Charlie Glotzbach crash. Larry had to be cut out of the car, but Glotzbach was all right, so yeah and the Scott speed legends race with sadly never ran again, so yeah that’s that.
Bristol mention dale vs labonete 1995 Dale wins at Bristol in 1979 getting his fist of many premiere series wins 2006 Gordon vs Kenseth 2012 Stewarts helmet is thrown at Kenseth

My favorite moment from Atlanta is when my fellow Wisconsinite Alan Kulwicki won the championship
That’s awesome! It’s definitely a legendary moment in our sport!
For memorable moments at Bristol, it's obviously Earnhardt vs Labonte in 1995 and 1999.
Easily! Great mention! Thanks for watching!
Michael Waltrip 1990 Mike Harmon 2002
Both insane crashes! Thanks for the mention!
One Atlanta memory is from 1996 when Bobby LaBonte won the race and Terry won the Championship and they did victory laps together
