Please share with religious Muslim sisters who need to hear Umm Khalid's message about polygamy. We need to end this taboo and not attack respected imams for leading the community by practicing their Allah-given rights!

I have to respond to what Umm Khalid said about most Muslim women accepting the legitimacy of polygamy, especially in the context of this specific incident. From the responses on social media I've seen, most (South African) Muslim women seem to try and reframe polygamy as a Sunnah that was specific to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and that anyone else doing it is doing it for lust (as if there's something wrong with that). That was close to a 100% of the comments that I've seen from women. It's as of they are fuqahā and they are changing the hukm. They're not explicitly saying it's harām, but they try to legitimize their hatred of polygamy with religious arguments.

Salam bro, there is nothing wrong with polygamy in Islam, but the comments were inappropriate and disrespectful. Maybe these kinds of ‘jokes’ that reference women inappropriately are normal in SA but it’s still not befitting of an imam. An real talk, SA mosque don’t even have a women’s section so a little reform would be beneficial.

@@harunskywalker4942 this is due to Fiqh differences, the majority of South African Muslims are Hanafī's, and their masjid commities act according to the Hanafī ruling relating to women in the masjid. In Cape Town, which is majority Shāfi'ī, every masjid I've been to has a woman's section, and on Jumuah it's not uncommon to see plenty of women crowding the masjid courtyards.
The Maulana's address was directed to his community and his followers on social media. They know him, and know the way he speaks. If they're not offended by it, why should we care about what somebody from outside thinks?

I personally (as a muslim female) dont have an issue with polygamy. I do however have an issue with men who think its ok to have a "secret" family on the side that wife #1 is not aware of while being encouraged by their local Imam to keep it hidden as long as possible. If polygamy is going to be treated like a religiously sanctioned affair you can't really blame the wife for seeing it as such. Also, any intention for polygamy should be made known to wife # 1 before marriage (not for consent) but to bring clarity to what type of relationship both parties want. Even though I support polygamy, I do think its wrong to spring this decision on someone after a few years of marriage who now have a few young kids and the first wife has become financially dependent. Its not fair to trap someone into a life they did not agree to. If the men can honestly and openly practice polygamy it could really benefit some single mothers, divorcees, widows, even young women who have difficulty finding a decent practicing muslim man. ❤

In the same breath then I can not use the term liberal Islam /modern Islam . Yes if liberal jihad was used in context of support , agreement, or promoting such false idea then I’m against it . Just lik I don’t believe in the idea of liberal Islam . Yes jihad is considered the six pillar in Islam according to the scholars of Islam . Maybe if we focus on the context before making a statement that is not supported or referenced from the Quran, sunnah , and ijmaa of the ummah might be a better approach. Well the fiqh context is simple here, the disbelievers, all of them, have no jihad, no salat, no zakat, no hajj, etc. since the 3ibadah of a disbeliever is not accepted. In the same way we don't talk about christian jihad or communist jihad or jewish salah, or hindu hajj.
It is closely related to the concept of al barra from those that reject the revelation.
In the end, intent and what the person means by his words is all that matters. Simply a matter of respecting for the religion and separating it from those that reject it.

      Allah said
Verily, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and he forbids immorality and bad conduct and transgression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
      Surat An-Nahl 16:90
      And Allah says
O you who believe, be persistently standing firm for Allah as witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just, for that is nearer to righteousness. Fear Allah, for Allah is aware of what you do.
      Surat Al-Ma’idah 5:8
“A man who has two wives and who is completely inclined to one and who ignores the other emerges with one side of his body paralysed in the Day of Judgment.” (Hadith; Ibn Majah, Nikah, 47; Mishkat al-masabih, 2/196)
A woman does not consent to share her husband with another woman under normal circumstances, and no woman would like to marry a married man unless she has to.
It is a necessity of belief that polygamy is right. However, to believe it does not necessarily mean for a woman to consent to the second wife and approve it.
No believer father would like his son-in-law to marry a second, third or fourth woman along with his daughter. The jealous nature of the woman and the affection of the father for his daughter disapproves this. As a matter of fact, the daughter of our beloved Prophet, Sayyidah Fatima, objected to her husband, Ali’s marrying of a second woman. If it weren’t permissible to object, Sayyidah Fatima, who was brought up by our Prophet, would not have objected. The Messenger of Allah would have warned her and ordered her to consent to her husband’s wish. However, it did not take place like that. On the contrary, the Messenger of Allah, who saw that his daughter was worried, asked Ali to give up his wish and told him that if he did not give it up, he could marry another woman after divorcing Sayyidah Fatima. He did not consent to Ali’s second marriage to depress his daughter.
By considering that act of the Messenger of Allah, it can be stated that Muslim daughters and fathers may object to the second marriage of their husband or son-in-law.

I'm from Cape Town. Maulana Dawood (the imam in the video) has been known for decades for speaking in the vernacular spoken on the Cape Flats. In fact, people find it endearing and love him for his way of speaking. As an Afrikaans speaker myself, I can say there is a bit of sexual inuendo in what he says (not only in the video, but others also) and I can see how that would upset some people. Unfortunately, it's as clear as daylight that the uproar around this video has nothing to do with the way he described women, but with the fact that so many South African Muslim women have internalised a feminist worldview and see polygamy as offensive.

    • @aalimah16
      @aalimah16 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

The innuendos are often in relation to marriage though. So i dont know why people have an issue..
One lady, who commented on the outrage, found it offensive that he said "if the washing machine does not work, then handwash". This was during a marriage class. He was talking about alternative ways to satisfy the husband if a wife has her menses.
If you the type of person that are gonna have an issue with this then rather stay away from marriage classes. Lol
I just wanted to give an example of how far people are going to attack him now. Everything he says is an issue now but how is the man gonna explain certain things without being too explicit?

    • @aalimah16
      @aalimah16 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@Dhul Qurnain This is the vernacular of the people. If you from the Cape Flats then you should know that. Under normal conditions his words would not be seen as offensive.
You should also know that the reason polygyny divorce rates are so high in SA is because of the stigma and abuse of it. The ML is trying to break the stigma and gets attacked and if he kept is quiet there would have been gossip "Het jy gehoor moulana het nog n vrou..."

    • @casperislamicus
      @casperislamicus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

@Dhul Qurnain do you really think an 'ālim would allow people in his community to engage in frivolous practices such as those you have mentioned. He was quite clear in saying that men should enter into polygamous marriages IF THEY CAN (i.e. they are capable of meeting all of the Shar'ī shurūt pertaining to marriage). Once again, this is a local issue that is well understood by local Capetonians, so the "outrage" of people that don't even understand the Maulana's language is misplaced.
The decades of sterling service that the Maulana has been doing in his community won't be erased just because some people who don't even understand his language were offended.
And as for the "labelling" remark, if the shoe fits, wear it. Most of the people who got offended are feminists upset because the Maulana was encouraging polygamy.

    • @mkay187
      @mkay187 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The anger in the community had less to do with polygamy and more to do with how degrading his metaphors were to women. Majority of the comments I read across platforms were of women and men upset at the meow and how he compared women to hens (and then people started exposing his other quotes from videos and classes). His frankly very valid message and good action of announcing his upcoming nikkah was lost amidst his cringe sense of humour and innapropriate innuendos.
The "vernacular of the cape flats" should not be used as an excuse that this comical, endearing imam had actually crossed a line (many times before as well). He apologised though, so that's all good, and tbh this topic should be left to rest. Poor dude. But also, much deserved criticism.

The fact is that we're not offended by the video because of the polygamist statement or the jokes. This particular Imam has a tendency to degrade women in his classes and makes pornographic statements and its time he need to be silenced because he's now publically broadcasting his masoginist statements.

There are 2000 religions, nearly 2000 people who said they "heard from god", how can you believe any of them knowing that if you said that today then you would end up in a psych ward.

The Imam shouldn't have made fun of his wife by making animal sounds or whatever. Allah says 'You are the garment of one another' which means you protect each other's flaws. It's okay for him to marry another lady but also okay for her to be upset as a woman nature, instead of comforting her that he will still love her even when he marries the 2nd time, he made fun of her on social platforms, and making the world laugh at her, hurting her feelings and shattering her trust. The problem isn't that he is marrying the 2nd wife but mocking and exposing her in front of random people, this is against the Quran. May Allah bless him and his family.

The way the Imam spoke is odd - I'm not saying this because I am a 'liberal'. I found it crass and was not amused by it. However, I assume this is the way the folk where he lives commonly speak and so perhaps what is considered indecent in my culture would not be considered indecent in his. I don't think calling men and women 'cocks' and 'hens' and advising brothers to 'get your hens!' is particularly respectful to Muslim women. Especially when you consider that polygamy is not a joke and that brothers should deeply consider whether they are up for the responsibility before embarking upon it. We are not 'hens' to 'get'. Yes, some liberals may be jumping on the bandwagon and overexaggerating but that does not automatically mean what the Imam said was faultless. We can be just and critique both. And Allah knows best.

the apparent treatment should be fair among the wives. But something like loving inclination towards one wive compard to the others is not one of them, since prophet do love Aisha more than his other wives and classical scholars already explained that "heart inclination toward one wive" is not one of "justice" in the context of poligyny marriage in islam.
but nonetheless, thanks that you are not against poligyny in islam, since there's many sister that does that (even though they won't admit it since hating on the teaching itself can take you out from the fold of islam), but you are just someone who advocate for it when it is done rightly islamically which is the correct position, not against it but also not advocating poligyny if it is not in allignemnt with the path of the prophet.

Which something that men don't do or won't do and will simply move on if there are such complications. She chose not to move on and stay with the current husband adn islam made it easy for her while giving her what she actually wanted which was to raise children.
And that would not make any sense since you don't need 2 men to impregnate 1 woman while 1 man can impregnate 2 or 4 women simultaniously. Hence, creating relationship between the children whilst being connected via the same blood line.
If 2 men impregnate 1 women it would not create any relationship between child and the 1st man. Hence it would just be the 2nd mans child while having nothing to do with the 1st man.

It grossed me out the min she said they take turns in the bedroom one after the other. They just see it as useful for sex but, once a newly redesigned STD comes out they'll run for the hills. Or better yet the baby comes out deformed. Anyways, In a world where there is a functioning households, few men would share a household with other men to begin with. Second, the household work would be too much for her to EQUALLY attend to her many husbands needs. Third, violence would erupt as seen in the past couple of years where couples will have "open relationships" or "open marriages" and the person(s) outside the marriage will get hurt and kill the wife or the husband will kill his wife or the wife will kill her husband. Some will result in divorces and the wife will threaten to take everything from her husband to get back at him even if she herself cheated on him before. Others, they will even kill their children to get back at the other person. Thats why Islam already has a system in place but, they'll call us barbarians while when they do it, they get everyone and their dogs killed and create exponential chaos but, they're sooo damn progressive. as Muslims we must fear Allah swt and not change the deen to suit our needs, unless we want Allah punishment to come upon us,
two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then one [marry only] from Quran...
And you will never be able to be equal just between wives, even if you should strive [to do so]. From quran from Quran...
      Allah said
Verily, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and he forbids immorality and bad conduct and transgression.

The most important thing, it is not to just increase the number of Muslim by accident meaning to just believe we must increase the number of Muslims. The rule of quantity must be ended. We should have even tree children but to educate them. Allah said in the chapter 58 verset 11: he (Allah) will rise in the high position those who cultivate knowledge and iman.

Assalam alaikum my brother. Please allow me to point out something here. What you have said in your video was right and I agree with it. But I don't think that the issue with the video that the man you reacted to was about polygamy or how it might be taboo. I think the main issue here is how he talked about women. Polygamy is part of our religion and is arguably very much needed in some cases as you said. We as muslims should not ever reject it or try to shame it. However, what the man did in his video while trying to promote for polygamy is totally unacceptable. We cannot be encouraging this kind of talk, especially as muslims and especially when trying to promote for a noble ritual of the deen. I think, you brother and my sister Um Khaled agree with me here. I am sad that you have not talked about this at all in this video, regardless if it was offensive to you or not, which can give the idea that this way of talking is okay, as long as it doesn't go to the level of locker room talk.
How can we say, that as long as the point he is trying to make in his video is good, we should not look at the way he talked about it.
I am also a muslim woman just like you my sister Um Khaled, and I don't really think that what he was saying was acceptable to you. I mean common. Especially with the "meow" at the end. Are you really not the least bothered by how he describes us women? Don't you agree that the phrases he used could be regarded as a bit sexual? Is that okay really to say especially when promoting something good in our deen? I don't think so. I mean there are a bunch of other ways to go about this other than what he did. He could've painted a better picture of polygamy to the viewers by saying a hadeeth or a verse from the Quran to encourage this or to point out the goodness in it for the individuals as well as the ummah as a whole. The way that man was talking in his video does not represent us as muslims and is only mirroring the ugly way of thinking that man has. I hope that you could in the future clarify to us this point better. Jazak Allah Khair.

Salaaam Aliakoum, I think the imam was being hysterical as a way to respond to the liberal movement who are brainwashing the Muslims. You have the right to be offended by it but the sound of it he was conveying a message in amusing tone.
Although, polygamy is allowed in our deen it is not easy for the modern Muslim men to get multiple wives due to the financial burden and responsibilities involved in it.
The sad reality is a lot of Muslims are struggling to get married nowadays for many reasons and sadly one of these reasons is the massive propaganda of the liberal movement such as feminism…etc
It is understandable if it is not your cup of tea amusement.

IMO you are being too critical of the brother. I hope you’re not falling victim to this “western feminist agenda” of bringing men down. Neither men nor women should talk about their spouse behind their backs. Joke or no joke . Its disrespectful. Shaitan loves that.

Remember that though Allah SWT permitted his bondmen to marry two, three and even four, he clearly advised for only one just afterwards. You may see the glorious words of the Almighty in the same verse. Hey bondmen !
Which one do you prefer, permission or advice ?

    How about خوارم المروءة ?
And the fact that people who take responsible roles in the community like imams should speak and behave in a manner that best suits and respects their position..?
It’s just not befitting of an imam to speak and act like that in my opinion, and this is a matter that the ‘ulema take seriously when taking any source of knowledge or inspiration from said person

as Muslims we must fear Allah swt and not change the deen to suit our needs, unless we want Allah punishment to come upon us,
two or three or four.

Liberals don't have problem with Polygamous relationships but there has to be no commitment, aka they want Polyamorous relationships. It is the same as polygamy, but in polygamy (of Islam), you have to be committed, give rights to your partner, follow certain rules. But in the case of Polyamory, it is an open relationship, with no commitments, no rights. Polygamy makes a family structure, while Polyamory breaks it (liberals will feel uneasy with this statement, it will be proven if you study on this topic).

Asalaamu aleykum brother Daniel and sister Umm Khalid. Thank you so much for this beautiful display of true Islamic unity and wisdom on this matter. I especially want to thank and congratulate sister Umm Khalid for standing by Islam and Sunnah and not the cancerous feminists who's true aganda she and Daniel rightfully point out only want to destroy Islam from within by manipulating the sister's of Islam. May Allah swt continue to protect, provide and bless both of you and your family. Jazak Allahu khair wa Barakat Allahu feekum

Can we please, please use the correct word...it is - as Umm Khalid used - Polygyny NOT Polygamy.
Polygamy is when either a man or a woman can have multiple spouses of the opposite gender, and that's not applicable to us. Great video, JazakAllahu khayran to you both!
