  • With Holden announcing they will no longer make cars in Australia after 2017 a proud 65 year history of car manufacturing will come to an end. Here we take a look at some Australian driving history via a mash up of Film Australia Collection road safety and driving instructional films where Holdens feature predominantly, demonstrating just how ubiquitous they have been on Australian roads. Buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Fascinating! Australia had the same problems with cars and drivers as the United States. I like the ending, where the guy says "road safety depends on *you.*" That's true. *You're* the bloke behind the wheel of the car, or bike. *You* control what the car or the bicycle, or motorcycle does. *You* be careful, for your safety, for your family's safety, and for the safety of other motorists and bicyclists, and pedestrians. :)

    How cool...
I'm 60 now and still driving a HQ V8 Holden one tonna built 1971 that I've owned 22 years
I've got a HJ Panel van that I drive every day
A VY UTE and the Mrs driving a Holden Vectra...now built overseas...
The way it's going...I'll be using one as a coffin when I go the the big wrecking yard ...

Yes, but being from a 1957 film it must have had something making it near worthless then. Eg rescued from saltwater or already crash damaged. But abundant then as were the Mad Max cars when filmed.

Ahhh yes........ motoring in the 20th century.........when your cassette player chewed up the tape mid song, when you had all the windows down in summer, when the seats burned your legs in summer, when you walked along a footpath and a guy not paying attention suddenly slamming on his brakes to avoid the car in front, scared the crap out of you(in the days before ABS), when ten year old cars blew smoke, had noisy exhausts, rust and every panel a different colour..........that's how it was!
When cars from the 60's and 70's were 15 - 20 years old, they aged very disgracefully, unlike cars of say, the noughties, on.
You could by a pair of HK Monaros for $200 total. Try doing that now!

It's unforgivable that Holden will no longer be building cars in Australia. Sadly, it seems the same thing is happening in other countries. The USA and Canada, it seems, are letting other countries build our cars and trucks. What's wrong with this picture? :(

Hi Jason, I'm Fran from Spain. I heard years ago that German cars ( Wolskwgen, Audi, Mercedes ) are more demanded and expensives in US, this is true? Here in Spain US and Japanese cars, less Ford obviously, are expensives both cars and spairs
