I’m in NC and have successfully grown garlic (hard and soft neck) the past two seasons. The trick I have learned and applied is to buy the seed garlic when it first becomes available (typically September). Take it straight from the packaging and put in a paper bag in the fridge for at least two months. This tricks the garlic to thinking it has gone through the cold cycle in the northern areas. I have planted in December and harvest in June.

Enjoying your show! I’m in zone 7b here in Spartanburg county South Carolina. I’ve grown all kinds of garlic for many years. I find soft neck types do better here in south and hard neck kinds favor north. But I’ve successfully grown both here. I presently grow Kettle River Giant. I got the original seed about 12 years ago from Territorial seeds and save several of the best bulbs for replanting every year. I plant about October 15th and harvest in mid May. 6 months of cool weather gets hard to come by further south, maybe use shade cloth when planting so as to keep soil cooler for a month or so? Ps: I grow 75 a year and Kettle River is an excellent keeper, so we always have a few usable bulbs left when the new garlic is harvested.

Hello "old goat" hiding behind the framed pumpkin, I see you. I'm excited, this season will be my FIRST attempt at growing garlic. My Elephant Garlic from Hoss Tools should be in my mailbox when I get home this evening. We use sooooooooo much garlic in my house - we all cook, and love the flavor. Thank you, as always, for your wise words and guidance. Forever grateful I found your channel and your company.

My daddy always made what he called tater soup................ or soup beans, always with cornbread. I made it for my grandkids (as well as collards). My friend thought I was crazy and depriving them. THEY LOVED IT. I grew up on dried beans, taters, collards ham and cornbread............after googling (dang yankee, lol) she agreed. Sometimes best to myob. I never went to bed hungry, my daddy fed the poor and us too...............every friday we grocery shopped and delivered groceries.................some of my best eating was my youngest years...............

I’ve grown both soft neck and hard neck here in the heart of Texas between Waco and Ft Worth. I’m in zone 8a. They work well. When I was young there was a farmer northwest of Waco that grew about three acres. He made a good living doing it. We have a upick vegetable farm and the plan is to make garlic a big part of it. Florida Zone 9 on the Nature Coast, the only garlic we have been successful with is Elephant garlic. I'm just ecstatic that we can grow any garlic at all, and we happen to love Elephant garlic too, so it is a win for us. Another interesting thing, we stored our garlic inside on a harvest rack and it is still looking good! Although, I don't have nearly enough for seed garlic, so we did need to purchase more. I am going to try and work us up to that 68 number because we do eat a LOT of garlic! 😊 Thanks for another great and informative video!

I tried growing soft neck garlic here in zone 8 and it was a waste of money. I kept it in the fridge for a couple months as directed, and it was very small cloves. I'm sticking to elephant garlic until one comes along that will grow good in the south. I'd like to grow the spicy red garlic, but I don't have money to waste, especially these days.

I love garlic..............it's good for your blood. I shred it on top of salads or into homemade salad dressings. My grand son in laws have asked me for recipe for my homemade balsamic vinegarette , Roast in oven to serve with bread and olive oil, plug roasts(beef/pork) and for italian/mexican sauces. my gucamole is nothing more than avacado, garlic and couple spoonfulls of pico de gallo with a little lime juice. Doesn't turn brown for more than a week, but usually gone by then. I like a hot spicy garlic. I've tried to grow different varieties. They did make but barely and poorly. I think my neighbors trees to the south are blocking the sun they need. I put that raised bed out there a LONG time ago............... gonna have to flip it I guess

I am glad you said what you did about never hearing about garlic when you were young. I thought I must have been a weirdo or something because it was the same here. But nowadays it’s a regular it seems to most gardeners. I’ve never grown it or cooked with it. I may have order some and learn both. I’m really looking forward to your herb bundles coming up.
