I was fortunate to have trekked (hiked) from Puttalam through Wilpattu with a friend before the war. It used to be a dirt track and no bridge. We crossed the river, which had water only up to the knees. Hardly any people then except for a few National Park guards. It was a hard slog because the surface was very soft dry sand and the temparature was quite high. Plenty of wild life, deer, peacock, wild boar etc. Did not see any leopards although we saw pug marks on the sand. Stayed a night with a guard near a villu (lake). Best bath I have had, surrounded by deer, peacock, one huge stag. It was dusk. Got out of it when the guard mentioned there is a resident crock there. He said it is harmless but we did not wish to test it. That night we were able to observe elephants, with one family of father and mother with the baby elephant in the middle. Good memories. As soon as we reached the village we were informed that there is a Cholera outbreak. However, we managed to leave the village although it was restricted at the time. This would have been about 35 to 40 years ago. I am 77 now.
