Hmm, in our DIY bike repair shop I always tell our visitors that it's crucial to wipe down the chain after greasing it so that it doesn't build up grime and dirt on the drive train to not wear down the drivetrain prematurely. I do this as well for my own bikes.
I’m wondering the reason for the heavy oil on the chain is to keep the road salt and sand from having access into small parts of the chain. When I was in the desert we would over grease bearing to keep the sand from reaching the inside of all the inner components.
Thank you for this new video. By watching your videos, I have been learning wat belongs to my yearly service of all the family bikes. Greatings from Germany!
Uploaded 9 minutes ago, 100 views already. 🥳 You're amassing a following 😏. Perfect time of year for a bike service over there in rainy England, though not quite dry enough for waxed drivetrains. Cheers and thanks for the videos!
Nowhere near ready for waxing, today we went from spring sun straight back to snow! Yes we’re very excited seeing where the channel is going and glad to see you’re excited with us it means a lot to make the journey fun🧡
Going to do my preventitive maintenence in a few weeks when the mudguards come off. That'll be roughly the weekend the clocks change here. Might be the weekend after since I've got a sportif style ride that weekend.
First time watching one of your videos. Wow! Complete, clear, concise - just what I needed. I've been learning most of this the last few years but it's so nice to see someone do it so well. Subbed. Thanks , keep up the good work!
I like that you mention only doing work the customer asks for. Sometimes as mechanics we think we know what’s best for a vehicle but lose sight of how the customer uses the bike. What works for us, may not work for them, causing issues. Great video as always.
Absolutely! We get a lot of comments asking about why we didn’t do certain jobs and the simple answer is the customer doesn’t want us to. Not every customer wants their bike restored it’s all about tailoring the work to their needs and budget. We appreciate all the support as always🧡⚙️
Thanks as always Dean. This one was a nice straight forward one but definitely just takes that bike from that 75% to 100% which is always worth while we like to think🧡
It’s absolutely essential to replace the chains before they start to wear the drivetrain, it’ll save you a lot of money in the long run. Thanks again for watching Oldgold🧡⚙️
Thanks Lee & Simon for bringing us these videos every week. I learn something new every time as you explain why & how something you're doing is important preventatively & for a smooth ride. I wonder if people bring you new bikes to give a once over as I think they should. The right grease you use for each bolt, axle & thread must be the rarest of rare among service shops.
Thanks very much for all the kind words. We do get new bike services which are often just as in need of the tune up as some very well ridden bikes. Thanks again!🧡⚙️
As usual guys a fabulous job when you do your next video where you fit a new chain can you comment on how you size it please. I have seen plenty of videos but there must be a relatively quick rule of thumb ? Cheers Paul
Excellent video and explanation. I just bought a 2023 Specialized Diverge Elite E5. It would great to hear the torque specs as you go along. I hope all mechanics are as through as you. Bike Mechanic is more or a trade now with hydraulic brakes, shocks, torque specs. It is a true craft you have. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks gentlemen for another great video. Thanks, Simon for all your work behind the camera. Your efforts each week are appreciated by your loyal fans. Be well.
@@Bikespeeds You have the best channel on TH-cam. It’s informative and entertaining and adds practical advice for those of us who want to learn more about how to fix our bikes. I’m still amazed how you can find the little things that make a big difference in how a bike performs. Keep up the great work.
That’s good practice! We try offer a very affordable service so there are some things with that base service where we draw the line but definitely on a full rebuild we will check it also🧡
That's a good tip about greasing the brake pad retaining bolts. I bought my bike used, and that bolt got stuck in the rear brake and ended up rounding out when I tried to remove it and I had to use an extractor to get it out.
Just subscribed to your channel! I was recently gifted a used Specialized Allez base bike. I plan to use your videos as my reference to DIY service the bike. I don’t have much background with road bikes (with drop bar) although I used to bike a lot with a mountain bike. P.S. Great cleaning videos. I’ve the other video on Allez and it was excellent. Thanks for all of your videos they are great. Quick question, why don’t you remove the pedals from the cranks and apply fresh anti seize to the pedal threads to prevent potential issues in the future? Thanks again!
Thanks for the support. It’s simply somewhere we draw the line with the cost of some services. For some bikes we take the pedals off but that all depends on the customers wants and needs for their bike.🧡⚙️
Is there a difference in the two jockey wheels on rear derailleur? You always show taking off , cleaning and refitting but wondered if you have to keep track which was which. Thanks
Yet another great video, I stumbled across a video from the US, similar to yours, but not as good. They had an interesting idea, they put Di2 components in a ziplock bag with a small amount of cleaner, and then added it to the sonic cleaner, for 5 minutes, looked pretty impressive when it came out. Would you ever put disc rotors in the sonic cleaner? Keep up the good work, loving the videos.
Thanks for watching Steve! We personally wouldn’t put discs in the ultrasonic cleaner as it doesn’t solve the scoring of the discs so we feel the best way to clean them is with the sand paper🧡
We buy these trade and aren’t sure where you can even get them from, it’s not something we’ve actually looked into. But… we will be stocking them on our coming website so stay tuned till then. Thanks for tuning in and commenting as always 🧡⚙️
Thank you for all the hard work that goes into these videos. Any update on the preferred syringe set size that you've been seeking? I want to implement these at my shop. Cheers
You would be surprised just how long it’s taken us to get the “perfect” syringe. However we are now happy with what we’re currently using. The next step is to figure out postage and packaging and then we will start listing them on our website available for purchase we recon maybe 4-5 weeks from now. Thanks for the interest we look forward to launching them🧡⚙️
Do you check the derailleur hanger before you put the bike back together? Maybe it's just me or more so for me it's my kids 20in mtb I have to check them or adjust them regularly.
We do. We don’t tend to show us checking anything because we figured you’d have about a minute of the video where nothing happens because nothings wrong so we only ever show something if it needs work. Thanks for watching!🧡⚙️
I noticed you said there is some kind of clutch thing on the rear derailleur. The bikes I have don't have anything like that on their derailleurs. Could you explain it's purpose and what it does please?
Hi, great video as always! I have also had a lot of trouble with squeaky disc! I tried to sand the disc down, but it didn’t work! Wich grit do you use? Greetings
Good maintenance work from the owner there. I'm sure she/he will be extremely happy to hear about the stem bolt! So easy to miss something like that until its too late. Tell me though, you did all that work through the drivetrain, but don't check the condition of, or correct tension on, the headset?
Thanks Peter. The headset bolt was a great find for us, we always love to see something that makes the service absolutely worth it’s while. We did check the headset as we do actually all things but we tend not to show anything on the channel that doesn’t need work done as there would just be a long portion of the video where not much happens. Hope that clears it up, thanks again!🧡⚙️
When there's new technology or something you've never worked on before, how do you learn what best practices are? One reason all my bikes are basically the same is because, FD excepting, I can just about muddle my way through a fair amount of basic maintenance before I pay a mechanic to do the stuff I can't or requires specific tools. Cheers for another interesting video
There isn’t really much new technology in cycling, the concepts are all the same across components even if they’re slightly different so we’ve never found it a problem. Thanks very much for watching and enjoy working on your bikes!🧡⚙️
New to your channel and watched several videos whilst I've been working late at night . Very informative - thank you. Would you please walk me through what grease you use and for what purpose. Copper slip makes sense, but I'm not sure what the others are. I'll be having a go at my bottom bracket and wheel bearings soon, and would find this information very useful. Thank you.

I always wash my bike and make sure to grease my chain after every ride. I don't bike in the winter here in the midwest in the US, it's just too cold and the salt on the roads corrodes everything. When something feels off or needs adjusting I pop my bike on my stand and give it a quick adjustment. Last season I started to get a clicking noise that sounds with every pedal stroke, I tightened up everything that I thought it could be but it's still there. Do you have any recommendations?

Nicely done chaps as ever 👌🏻 Was on my way to bed then noticed the new vid so turned all the lights back on and sat down again to watch! I guess it did quite a few miles over the winter if the chain stretched over just one season?
We don’t actually know when this chain was put on but this was the riders exclusive winter bike and she does train quite seriously so it’s possible. Thanks for tuning in as ever🧡⚙️
Another winner, a quick question though. Do you find problems with through axles sticking in place ? I've not got disc brakes but I can't think of anything more annoying than not getting axles out if I had a puncture.
Yes. We see it day in, day out at the shop. That’s why we’re so obsessive with our lubricating, we’ve seen just about everything stick but particularly axels🧡⚙️

If the chain is worn out it’s about time to replace the cables as preventative maintenance with little cost. Your labor out ways the exclusion of replacement of those oversized diameter derailleure cables.
Re: Greasing the brake caliper bolt. For me, it's a little too close to comfort having grease that close to my pads. I would be afraid that if it gets wet, like in the rain, oily/grease could run down to the caliper. Or when I clean my bike, I often spray de-greaser or other cleaners onto my bike, and there may be potential for that grease to run down.
Yes! We film whatever bikes are in on our filming days amongst many other variables but we simply haven’t had one line of for a little while to film. So hopefully we’ll have on in soon🧡⚙️

You're 100% right, there should be 0 grease around brakes at 100% of the time. Unless you don't like braking that is.
measure chain.

Out of interest, why do you usually cut the ends off the cables when removing the deraliers?
We do this to allow us to take the components off, a lot of ends don’t fit through the components 🧡
