  • The Far North of New Zealand is known for stunning beaches and a rich cultural heritage of the Maori people. Spirits Bay has both of these things along with excellent snorkeling and a beautiful DOC campground. This is a place to fully immerse yourself in summer vibes and beach life for as long as possible.

    I used to live in Northland and have camped at Spirit’s Bay numerous times. I always recommend it to people visiting. It’s a special spot alright. The sand has a pink tinge, the turquoise clear water and green hills, the peace…bliss.

    I'm from NZ and my father who is Maori told me that when Maori people pass on, their spirit will pass through Cape Reinga as you said and then will travel to Hawaiki (Hawaii) to rejoin with their ancestors as Hawaii is the ancestral homeland of many Polynesian people.

    • @JesseStLouis
      @JesseStLouis  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting. We thought that was the case. Have you been up to Spirits Bay?

      @peterkotara 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hawaiki, the ancestral homeland has never been thought to be Hawaii, but that is a verry common mistake (obviously because the words ar similar). We now know Hawaiki to be Taiwan, where the great polynesian migration set off from.

    Dude I'm obsessed with your New Zealand videos. You legit seem like a long lost uncle lmao. I did a 3 month bike tour with my surfboard around the North Island when I was 21 and had some similar experiences camping in the bush, living on 5$/day eat nothing but PB&J , exploring on random farmland hiking, snorkeling, and surfing. Its super cool to see your videos and love for exploration It gets me fired up to explore. I am headed back to hitchhike around New Zealand at the start of 2022 I can't believe that you provide this caliber of quality entertainment for free. Thank brother!

    Hey Jesse, great video as always. Would you consider doing a video explaining how you travelled in NZ and kept on a budget? For example, are you renting a car, or did you buy one, how much of the time are you camping vs hotels, etc. Our trip last fall was blown but seeing the videos you make has us wanting to do 6-8 weeks rather than 3.

    • @JesseStLouis
      @JesseStLouis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We bought an old carpenter van and I converted it into a self contained camper van. All the details are in this video th-cam.com/video/fFfNZJIqF10/w-d-xo.html. So most of the time we're living in that at either free or paid Campgrounds. We've gotten Air Bnbs 4 or 5 times when the cost was similar to that of a Campground. Never stayed in a hotel. Best way to see the country is by campervan, which you could rent for your trip. Pak N Save is the cheapest grocery store and they also have the cheapest gas.

    Great history lesson, Jesse. Fine images of another beautiful place. I was wondering what those trees with the red flowers are? Beach pretty much to yourselves. I wonder what that beach is like typically, over the years.

    • @JesseStLouis
      @JesseStLouis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I actually meant to mention those trees but forgot. Those are pohutukawa trees aka the New Zealand Christmas Tree. The red flowers bloom around Christmas time.

    The New Zealand maori are actually native to Taiwan and can be dangerous to unsusoecting toutists who are too trusting. They have a very high maori crime rate in New Zealand.

    • @JesseStLouis
      @JesseStLouis  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They are definitely NOT any more dangerous than any other group of people in the country. We had no issues for 26 months while we were in the country. Using your logic, we're all native to Africa.
