CaptainSauce I was convinced you were right about the protagonist being the neighbor’s son, so I’m at a loss for ideas so far. It seems like the neighbor is “just” a weird, paranoid kidnapper who maybe lost his mind after his wife died, but I feel like there’s more to it than that. I just can’t figure out what it is so far.

I'm genuinely *very* intrigued by this story. Big thanks to Captain Sauce for having the patience to play this, when I never would.
The protagonist obviously lives across the street from the neighbor, hence the name of the game. Maybe "hello, neighbor" means the missing children are also neighbors to the protagonist?? In the opening scene of act 1, we see the protagonist kicking the ball down the street alone, looking rather sad. Maybe sad because his friends are missing, kidnapped by the neighbor?
Also, can I just say how WEIRD it is that the neighbor built that HUGE fence around his house? You'd think that would raise some suspicion from the others who live on the street, or at the very least, the protagonist's parents... How long was the protagonist in the basement for the neighbor to build that huge fence? So! Many! Questions!
Alternatively, to stick with the idea of the protagonist being the neighbor's son, could it be that the protagonist is running away from the house to stay away from his father after losing his mother (the neighbor's wife)? Grief might've made the neighbor a little wacko, so maybe the protagonist befriends the son of the people who live across the street? Neighbor kidnaps the protagonist's new friend and a girl, too? So many possibilities...
I was wondering though. He has pictures of the Neighbour in his house. Everyone thought that meant that the Neighbour was his dad or related to him because of it. But what if it's just a reminder sort of thing. We know that in these first two Acts, the protagonist is still a kid. What if the whole kidnapping really freaked him out and just like in a Pixar movie, he vows to find out the mystery or some bullshit. And comes back as an adult to find out what is going on.
Aditya Rajan that could be it too!! Maybe the photos in the alphas we saw previously were also just place holders of a sort? There are no photos of the neighbor in the protagonist’s house in acts 1 and 2, so maybe the photos when (if) they show up, might be slightly different just like the house in act 1/2 mimics the house in alpha 2, but is slightly different.
What I was thinking is that the protagonist is the neighbors son. The kid was locked away by his dad (the neighbor) because he didn't want to lose another family member. So the kid started picturing his childhood to be a terrible prison as an adult. I feel like this because we know it's all flashbacks. And his creativity and imagination made his past memories a nightmare.
Edit. Also the first chapter is him trying to get the person the neighbor locked up out. So I feel like you're the missing boy, and I feel like that's his sister. He's trying to free his sister from being locked up or in my idea Maybe grounded. And he gets caught to. So he gets grounded and locked up. So he trys to break out and thinks it's this amazing breakout because his imagination is making it seem like a big game. Because there's all these things he needs to do to get out. So I feel they are the missing kids but they're not actually missing. That was just his imagination

Act 2 is BY FAR the hardest act. The neighbour just doesn't leave you alone, and the puzzles are super complex.

I think that the beta maps are are the flash backs because u r able to find a car crash and in the game theres a car crash and theirs a roller caster on the house on the beta.
You have so much more patience than I do. The sheer number of times you have to start over because the neighbor can apparently see and grab you through walls would make me crazy. Still, I love that we’re getting more info about the plot, and the water puzzle was pretty cool. I’m still impressed by how much of this game wasn’t given away in the alpha and beta builds. Not just the plot, but so much of the actual game isn’t at all what I was expecting. I hope they do better at balancing the neighbor’s abilities in later acts, since it would make sense you have a harder time escaping him as a kid.

I think that rollercoaster scene is telling that the neibur Daughter was ran over and killed by something

Actually the brother pushed the sister down the stairs and she got injured or died thus the neighbor crying
The brother got sick in school and then died and the wife got in a car crash with the neighbor acidently and the daughter was pushed off the roof acidently I think by the brother

My theory is that u are between two time periods. with the one time period, u are remembering stuff as a child?/when u had an imagination. The other one is that u remember that and start to have an imagination again.
Another is how the mother/wife goes to the store, then to pick up the son. Then on the way there, the mom/wife gets in a car accident with a pizza truck. The pizza truck crashes into the lake, and only the son survives because the neighbor sold his soul to the devil in order to save his son's life.The mother goes to the hospital with the neighbor, only to find out she died, and the son lived. Sorry for it being so long. I love u!

That room you woke up in is the room that used to be under the map where you would teleport with that golden apple and you would be the neighbor and would see the child monster or whatever it was, it looks identical!! Compare it, it's the same room!!
Maybe on the rollercoaster it was saying that the neighbor had kids. Because you could hear an adult and children talking or laughing. But then he was crying because his wife and kids died? And the cut outs of the children would be like spirits or things there to remind the neighbor of his children?

honestly surprised with how the game is looking so far. A few weeks ago I was arguing with another person over how Bendy and The Ink Machine is better than Hello Neighbor. if this game finishes strong and continues to surprise me, I will rate it next to BATIM, of course, that could change since BATIM is still not complete, since only three chapters are completed. But it's surely a step up from my expectations after the last Hello Neighbor video CS did.

Maybe the boy that is missing is your brother and the neighbor is your father but your mom divorced him when you are a baby and your mom get you and neighbor have your brother. And the neighbor has a new wife which give him a daughter and after that the neighbor wife has car crash later she die in hospital and then in the golden Apple supermarket the neighbor meet the shadow boy who will make a deal if you put all of your children basement and locked them up for his wife to return. So the neighbor lock up his son and daughter but he is missing someone and the someone is you since you are the son of the neighbor that is why he locked you up in the basement. You live in the house next door. Your mom has errands that is why you don’t see you mom. Later when you a grown up you move and live in a apartment but you have to leave your apartment and move in your father house later you have a nightmare about your father. That is why the house is so weird. It’s your imagination. Later you wake up and decide to to look at the basement and find out that the basement was sill. And your neighbor is in prison for locking up his children. That is what is what I think right now.

i just had a small epiphany while watching this again, cap always said that he thought the big crazy house was just a kids imagination and it was never really like that, i think it was a tiny bit with the neighbour making reservations to the house and the kid over exaggerating them

This is a Continuation of my theory in act 1. So the neighbour turned to a complete psychopath then turned the house to complete madness.Then the daughter died from a train that was in a carnival then the son of the neighbour we dont know thats it next episode again. But the neighbour will catch you again but with your brother then your brother dies and your the last one

I had an epiphany when you go into the room with a hole in it and alpha-2 it's the exact same bedroom in hello neighbor hide and seek and there's obviously the kid outside who's playing so he knows of your existence before you go missing and before everything happens so you just have no relation to the neighbor whatsoever

If anybody is trying to complete the game now, there is a glitch that sends you flying into the air and out of the fence. To do this glitch you need to stand on the pipe that cap is stood on at 8:28 and wait for the neighbour to jump around underneath you for a bit.

i don't think the neighbor actually moved, he just renovated the house. In act one, the house was sort of normal, in act 2, it wasn't quite train going through the rough, but it was a rickety stack of boxes, and i'm guessing in act 3, it'll be the full way with train and fart jumps

I once broke the game on act 2. I was stacking these boxes up to parkour, I don't remember what it was I was trying to jump to, and then I got rocketed into the air and landed over the wall.

Is it possible that the two cardboard cutouts were of his wife and son? His wife died in a wreck, maybe she was pregnant? So he is kidnapping female adults and boy children in order to replace them? Cuz the scream from act one sounded older. Maybe there is an adult woman somewhere.

Let me get this straight, so the roller coaster ride 'minigame' when the cart hit the cardboard girl represented the boy(the neighbor's son) pushing his sister off the roof, which led to her death, which happened after the neighbor got in a car crash and his wife died, so the neighbor punished his son by locking him in the basement which is what the screaming was in Act 1. Correct me if im wrong, I would love to know the full story.

I think the missing children got taken and trapped in the basement like the protagonist and you play as a child who tries to find out what happened to the neighbor
If you drain the shark's water there is a shovel then take the shovel and get the dollhouse key under the dirt and then the bathroom is open and there is a Lego man on the toilet grab it and put it on the dollhouse toilet and then bigger version of the Lego man will be there then grab the crowbar and take the nails off the fence and ur out

what im getting from the rollercoaster ride is that you the protagonist crashed into the neighbors car and killed his wife but rhat theory makes little since
How to get the red key to escape
1: the 3 pipes
2:get the wrench check and go to the shark room then at the ladder where the basement outage is get 2 boxes and walk along the wood and If you have the vowel from the tap and that will drain the sharks water and then you can get the shovel
3: get the coffins lid and throw it out the get the gold key
4: where the shark room is you go to the end of the sharks room and there’s a door open the door and then go to the mini house and then unlock it then open the mini door and get the dream machine to cold
5: go to the other tap ( not the sharks tap and not the ladders tap the water rooms tap)fill it up and it will be ice and then get the red key
