Before filming began, Peter Berg visited the families of the dead. The father of Danny Dietz, played by Emile Hirsch, read him an autopsy report detailing the eleven bullets that tore through his son. "He was reading that and crying," says Berg, "and then he said, 'That's who my son was. That's how hard he fought. Make sure you get that right.'"

I've met Marcus Lutrell and got a photo with him along with an autographed copy of his book Lone Survivor (to this day the most amazing, heart wrenching story I've ever read). He was signing autographs at a Houston Astros game in 2010 at the time. To this day, it is the most "star struck" I've ever been.
I've also been in touch with Michael Murphy's father through Facebook where I sent my condolences as well as my thanks for his sons service to our nation. He responded with the following to me:
"Thank you for your kind comments. It has been the kindnesses of strangers who honor Michael's service and sacrifice that have given the family the strength to endure and continue on after this terrible tragedy which has befallen us. Thank you for remembering my "buddy boy"."

Luttrell got a happy ending, and so did the Afghan guy who saved his life. I think it says in the epilogue that the 2 are still very close friends and regularly hang out to this day. Unfortunately, the movie was made in 2013, so the “their fight against the Taliban continues today” isn’t accurate anymore. The Taliban took over Afghanistan again back in 2021. People are still resisting in some areas, and a lot of people made it out before the Taliban took over, but Afghanistan is under Taliban control now. I hope in the future the Afghan people will liberate themselves again.

So, some things that are a bit different in this movie than in real life.
    1) In the movie, they probably KILLED more people than actually attacked them in real life. After lots of after action reports and witness statements from the rescuing force, as well as video made by Shah's militia, it was probably more around 10 to 12 that attacked them. People might think SEALs are supermen, but they don't realize that if you have no firepower, no comms for support, and you get rolled up on by a force 3x your size with firepower, you're dead.
    2) The goat herders probably didn't rat the SEALs out at all. Villagers and intelligence assets stated that Shah's militia saw the SEALs ' helicopter the night prior and tracked them from the landing zone. They said some of the militia even had eyes on them while they were trying to decide what to do with the goat herders.

A few things about this mission.
It was fucked from the start, and there’s details on why.
The SEAL team was killed by a dozen or so taliban, there wasn’t as much as depicted in the movie. Seriously it was like 12 of those guys that killed them.
The SEAL team was told by the Marines (who the poached the mission from initially and had all the intel) to bring stronger communication systems because they lacked it at the time.
The taliban KNEW an operation was going to start sometime that week because they started to do false inserts throughout the week basically notifying the taliban that something will happen soon.
Rather than walk to the objective area they were inserted in by helicopter (hence why they tried doing false inserts through out the week) so they were heard by the taliban.
The fast ropes they used to drop in? They didn’t even try to hide them, and the goat herders found them that verified that Americans were in the area operating. So they let the guy the seals were hunting down now via their own radio.
The mission should have been called off
with all those things happening but it didn’t, and all those events happened.
There’s been a report that luttrell fired off little to no amino because he was knocked out so quick, not because he didn’t want to fight.

That song in the intro at base and at the end is called Waking Up...
I always used to play it when i would get ready for work.
While in a skype call with my at that time girlfriend.
I would get ready to go to base, and she would fall asleep to that music, knowing full well i could disappear for a few weeks or so without knowing if i would come back or not.
She even waited a year for me when i was in Afghanistan.
Eventually the distance broke us up...
She was in the US, i was in The Netherlands.
I miss her till this day, but thats life...
Yes, this movie showed the harsh reality of combat.
Soldiers are always scared in situations like that.
But its that fear and the training that keeps us alive.
And its our courage, and thoughts of coming home again that keeps us going.
Its not an easy job, far from it.
But if not us, then who will.

But i would quit my job for the right woman without hesitation.
I more then served my time.
Sacrificed more years then i can count for an ungrateful world that has no idea what we do for them.
Over here the army is concidered a low income job for people that dont want to go to school.
Instead of a selfless honorable thing like they see it in the united states.
Spent 4 years there, after Afghanistan, was stationed there as part of a initiative to improve our training.
And i really miss it there though.
It hurts and saddens me, realising how much time i wasted doing this job.
Deploying to countries that dont want us, dealing with people that dont understand us, following orders from men that dont care about us, while our families worry about us.
When people ask me if the military is fun, i tell them the truth.
      Its not fun at all.
But there are moments that make it worth it.
You will sign a deal with the Devil.
He will send you to Hell.
If you survive and come back from Hell, he will send you again and again and again.
The messed up thing is, that Hell will always stay with you.
And you either find peace with it or it will kill you.

This movie is based on an actual U.S. Navy S.E.A.L.s mission in Afghanistan around 2004-2005.
The old man in the movie tells them "You are all going to die by tonight" I might be para phrasing it, but you the meaning.
You might think that the young Afghan's are just boys, but in the religion of Islam. A boy becomes a man at age 12. Plus these are tribal people. Who live a tough life. They are farmers and goat herders in a mountainous region. Not to mention there has been some form of war going on since 1979 when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan. The Afghan's grow up quick, and learn to live a hard life.
You might have objections to giving a 10 year old an AK rifle. However in that part of the world. That is just part of everyday life.

In watching some other channels run by veterans they say that this is probably the most realistic war movie made showing mountain/forest combat. Especially when it comes to the SOUND of combat (the cracks, snaps, and zipping of bullets) and how difficult it is to really see the enemy, in daytime, in that terrain.
Also shows that no matter how well trained or equipped you are, battles and wars are still a numbers game. If it's 4 vs. 20-30 guys in that kind of terrain it's not a video game, you're going to lose, it's just a matter of how many you take with you. They'll be able to pin you down and maneuver against you which is why the SEALs kept having to fall back and reposition.
That's why it is standard US Military Doctrine to always plan to outnumber your opponent AT LEAST either 3 to 1 or 4 to 1 (I forget which) in any engagement you're planning on being a part of. So if you know there are 20 bad guys in a compound you're going to attack it with no less than 60-80 of your own guys. If you know a city has 2,000 fighters in it you're going in with at least 8,000 troops.
You NEVER want it to be a "fair fight". Fair fights result in comparable casualties. You don't want comparable causalities. You want it to be as lopsided as humanly possible.

By the way the guy that spilled the coffee on the table and asked the newbie (Patton) to clean up is the real Marcus Luttrell. He's playing a cameo in the movie. Hacksaw Ridge is actually a ww2 film, but it features the war in the Pacific theater against Japan, not in the European theater against Germany like Saving Private Ryan and Fury. Another war film u can react to is Black Hawk Down (2001), also based on a true story, about the US military mission in Somalia in 1993 (Battle of Mogadishu or infamously known as Black Hawk Down) that went wrong.
