    I have speculated for months about what may be in store for us with The Shape of Water, ever since a Things You Missed I did on the trailer back in July. This weekend, the film is finally released, so I'll be dissecting commonly overlooked details, Easter Eggs, connections to Creature From The Black Lagoon and more.
    This time I'm bringing you a whopping 55 new facts about this unique monster movie. I'll dive into topics like the symbolism of time, the meaning and use of color, recurring themes and even deciphering those strange hieroglyphics on the couch.
    I'll also break down the ending and give my own theory on how it went down and what the amphibian creature actually was. Join me as we go deeper into this movie than ever before.
    I'm also doing a free CZsWorld merch giveaway to one lucky fan, stay tuned for the details on that.

    Ok so I just saw the movie today... Did no one catch the fact that they mentioned Eliza was found abandoned by a lake or some body of water and she just so happens to have those scars on her neck? I believe she was actually from the ocean herself, just a different type which is why she was always drawn to water, how she always pleased herself in the bathtub, and how she was able to control the water droplets in the bus scene. She felt natural drawn to the sea god so it must be something. At the end, he just helped her open up her gills, not converted the scars to them.... That's my thought.

    ok, nice try, but her "scars" were actually her gills. She was found as an infant, with no ability to speak. The story of the little mermaid was about the princess from under the sea that gave up her tail for legs and had NO VOICE. That being said, she was ALWAYS a mermaid.

    Elisa's middle name Esposito comes from Exposito a name given to abandoned children. In the movie she was found abandoned by the river.
    Amphibian Man was considered a god in the movie. Elisa means "Consecrated to God" Her last name Jeane means "God is Gracious".

    Im almost certain that this whole movie is actually being told through the perspective of Eliza's neighbor. The film opens with him narrating and ends with him narrating too. I think the whole scene about Eliza getting gills after falling into the sea at the end was her neighbor adding some poetic whimsy for a happy ending. This works, as he is an artist, but because he would want a happy ending too. del Toro has also said that this movie is a "fairy tail for troubled times", further backing the idea that this movie is literally being told as a story.

    In the behind the scenes the director said he introduced the color red as passion. Eliza began to wear bits of red when she began to have a strong bond with the aquatic man which was expressed in passionate moments like when she was crying in the locker room and her red shoes after they were intimate.

  • @BrianAltamar
    @BrianAltamar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    This might be a little lengthy but well worth it.
    I look at the color palette differently: I think green is looked at as comfortability... the time stamp is green, the green(teal) car that he buys, the key lime pie, the red jello in the painting that guy made him change to green. It shows that they’re not ready to get out of comfort, directly and indirectly. And red, shows getting out of that: when she confronted Strickland she was wearing red, on the calender, she wrote in red ink signifying her inevitable time to change, I feel like he made the jello red at first because he was ready for change (mentioned he stopped drinking and wanted to get back to work) but he was held back to his comfortablity to be back in green. Also, I think she’s very aware of time and uses that to her advantage. You mentioned that she’s always late to work but I think she does that on purpose to skip the line knowing that D will hold her place. She uses her “disability” to her advantage. I could go on and on but I’ll leave it at that. What do you think.

  • @LimitingConcepts

    One of the things I liked best about this film is that it was very complex and multilayered! While watching, I began to see teal as a nod to the harmony among land and sea, the way the color itself is composed of a harmony between green and blue. I thought it was interesting how some of the characters failed to see the blue in teal and instead called the color green, yet nobody ever saw teal without the green and called it blue. Perhaps this is because as humans, our perspectives are often grounded (pun intended) in the world that we know, blinding us to the perspectives of creatures that we cohabit the world with. This ties back to a central theme of the film. What do you guys think?

    Ok so I just came out of the movie and me and my sibling developed a theory about Elisa.
    So considering how it was said that Elisa was found near a river as a baby, with slits in her neck that soon became gills, she is probably a fish person also--just a different sub-species than Gabe. In the theater I went to they played previews of the original Creature from the Black Lagoon and its sequels. The 3rd sequel mentioned that the creature spent so much time on land that it started appearing more and more human. This is what happened with Elisa. Because she was removed from water as an infant she became more human, but now being placed back into water she remembers how to breathe.
    Gabe, probably spending his whole life in water can't be on land for long periods because his body hasn't adapted like Elisa has.
    Let me know what u think CZsworld!

In the end of the movie i half expected Eliza and “gabe” to swim off together for a few minutes while beautiful music played (but i only expected that cause i was remembering the ending scene of the movie “Splash” starring Tom hanks which i loved). I wanna see this movie again, its so different despite the odd concept of reversing the mermaid idea-the message was beautiful and i didnt just care about the main characters i also cared about her friends zelda and giles. I thought she was a mutilated version of the creature. IDK why she looks Soo human though. But they said in the film that they found her next to a river when she was a baby and had those scars on her neck. Even before they turned back into gills and had her breathing underwater, I thought the scars looked like gills that someone sewed shut. Possibly the people who found her by the river. Or maybe the creatures did it to her to make it so she could grow up in human society easier.

    The colors could also be connected to the chakras. Red is the root - when she lost her grounding she was shown in red. Liza is all about love which is green - heart chakra. Yellow is the sacral chakra - self-esteem - the reason the villian was such an azz. Also blue is the throat chakra and Eliza can't speak, so she only gets to blue green - teal in her communication.

      AnaisKarim. This is an interesting analysis of the colors as symbolism. It also makes sense as to what they represent in your explanation of chakras. Thank you. I also thought that the basic red,yellow, green as the traffic lights, green-go,yellow-caution,red-stop;or ,as in this case,red at beginning meaning stop;then warning to caution, then full green to go,and so it went. Then there is Starman movie where he learns our actual observance of traffic lights, red means stop, green means go, and yellow means go faster. What you do with these I don't know, just some more ideas to tag at.

    I saw this as a show of progression ahead of it's time. Our main characters are all of minority groups especially for the time period. They are the downtrodden against the pinnacle of american man. Needing to let go of traditions and ideals and be willing to grow.

  • @morphman86
    @morphman86 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The time period for this is somewhere around the beginning of the McCarthy era, the second "red scare". The one that lasted until the late 90's.
    I think the yello colouring has a significance in that. "Green is the future" is America's move towards capitalism, which was kickstarted around that time. "Red is the past" is America leaving behind the socialist past and shedding everything even remotely connected to communism, perceived or real.
    The man was taken off his position as a prominent artist for "being red", something we saw a lot of during the McCarthy era.

  • @masteranimearcher
    @masteranimearcher 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I think you're totally right on what you were saying but there were a few other things I thought about.
    The shoes also seemed to be tied together with the idea of the fish creature being a god. Eliza's name means either 'an oath of God' or 'God is satisfaction' or 'a pledge to God'. A lot of people take off their shoes in a sign of deference when they're on holy ground. It seemed like when Eliza loses her shoes she is treating the water as 'holy ground' because Gabe is 'holy'. When she loses it it's almost like she doesn't need her shoes anymore because she's been elevated to beyond human. Her shoes seem to be linked to divine promises and Zelda complaining about hers hurting when Eliza doesn't have hers on seems to indicate the pain from her poor relationship.
    It's also worth pointing out that Eliza is the greek form of Elizabeth. In the Old Testament of the Bible Elizabeth was the mother of John the Baptist who purified humanity with water. It may be a stretch but I still thought it was interesting considering the story of Delilah is actually brought up on screen in the movie.
    The use of green is another interesting thing because according to a lot of Christian ideology green represents eternal life and eternal youth.
    I'm also not sure if this is just coincidence but in old Toltec lore there are two seperate water deities. One is more masculine and represents earthbound water like lakes, rivers, and the like while the other is a feminine deity that represents all water that comes from the sky. I don't know if that was intentional but since he was being worshipped in the Amazon somewhere it made me wonder.
    I take the ending to say Eliza was breathing underwater in the end and controlling water earlier in the movie. Just a bunch of ideas I had when I saw the movie but I love the video.

    The thing with the colours is about difference in mindset. Elisa is green and blue, common colours for water. The lab is also between blue and green. That means almost everything she connects to resembles water. Red is the opposite of green and yellow is the opposite of blue, so whenever we see anything with those colours, it says they are opposite to the facility, Elisa and the asset. Strickland transitioning from yellow to this greenish blue says he's getting more and more involved with the world of the facility.

    About "Gabe" being the Creature from The Black Lagoon, if you watch the film, the some of the dialogue is very similar to that in The Shape of Water. More Specifically when they talk about being able to survive different environments.

    Amazing explanation! I'm always intrigued by the use of color in storytelling, but I don't always pick up on it (it's not always as easy as the Matrix, where green=matrix, blue=real world). I loved this movie upon first seeing it, but now I have an even greater appreciation for the art and direction. And Michael Shannon shines in every role he is in... he can be scarier and more intimidating than any monster or gigantic bodybuilder. His constant growl-talk while chewing on candy is frickin amazing, it fits the character so well! I'm always tickled that he's such a fun friendly goofball in interviews, yet once he's behind the camera, he can become your worst nightmare. That's a great actor, along with everyone else in this film.

    Elisa starts to wear more and more red clothing when she falls more and more for the amphibian creature. Red is also the color of LOVE.
    "Unable to perceive the shape of you, I find you all around me". That poem at the end is about love/a beloved person not about water. But like water love has no shape (or emerge in different shapes).

    I love your color theory, and it makes so much sense. In the beginning she is edmaries a pair of red shoes behind glass, before walking away leaving them in the past before she sits on a bench waiting for the bus, light in green light. As the bus was. Walking to her new life, as that day the bus took her to work when she met the fish man. Also shoes: as you said the shoes were her ties to land, they were red to me saying: her life on land is in the past. When she goes to the bus it is raining, and it lights up green, to me symbolically stating her new life is ahead and it is in water. Because that is after she walked away from the shoes. Anyway, comment if this makes sense or not so much.

    Awesome breakdown and analysis! I'm curious how you interpreted Strickland's obsession with the story of Sampson and Delilah, and him seeing himself as the "Sampson" in this story? I thought the film turned this on its head by making 'Gabe' the Sampson. Doubly so for Strickland's final realization that "You are a god."

    Here is another theory about the shoes; Te shoes might be a symbol for her humanity. She has to keep them clean at all times and wears them everywhere. There is a scene where she sees red shoes on display and she desires them. This could mean, status quo. The wants the red shoes because they are better than what she already has, get it? Well, she wants a better life, than what she already has. Upon meeting"Gabe", she does not need the shoes anymore, she does not have to conform to the ways of the shoes, so naturally, she slips them off, she won't need them where she is going. Prior to all this, she had expressed her pain with the shoes claiming that they hurt her, think about it for a while, she is mute and her shoes hurt her. To put it into perspective is the saying"walk a mile in my shoes". In all the scenes where she is happy, the shoes seem to be a big part, either she is wearing them while dancing or simply taking them off cause she does not need them anymore...

      I love mythological trivia! I've heard of Sirens being half human/half bird - almost like Harpies (which I believe are more vulture-like). Pertaining to color del Toro has a very interesting color code he uses in most if not all his movies. I am not an expert in his code but I remember of a few examples. All his characters tend to have a color motif hell boy always has a read motif on his character and colors that complement red tend to appear with him, colors being characters. Pans labyrinth has a bright gold yellow. This showing a clear indication of a fantasy but in his eyes an also haunting danger. In the shape of water Abe is a blueish green and there is a great motif of green seen in the movie. This very much gives off a feeling of ocean and sea.

    at 8:43, polishing shoes is not done "to give them that crisp tap sound". However, I think you are quite right about the shoes as a vehicle for her artistic expression and communication. Caring for the upper part of the shoe would reflect further on the pride and care she shows for the small enjoyment she gets out of her otherwise dreary life.

    I think she's some kind of amphibious creature too. If she were human, then the healing of her scars would've made them disappear. Instead, the healing turns them into gills, possibly gills that she was born with that were surgically closed at a young age. Also her name is Spanish, which is widely spoken in South America where the creature comes from (the Amazon stretches outside of Brazil into many Spanish-speaking countries). These are just my crazy thoughts, but I think they're fun(:

    I love the colour palette of Guillermo del Toro's films both is and Hellboy , I kinda saw this as a reverse little mermaid kind of story, tho both of them have no voice so to speak,but use their hands to communicate with each other and Zelda which I really liked, Eliza, Zelda and Gabe are all unique characters and ahead of time time. Like they both know sign language so they can speak with Eliza and even the creature learns to speak with her this way, but everyone else she needs Zelda there to interpret what she is saying because she isn't seen as important enough to learn to communicate with her because she can't talk back . I have watched this a few times now and like it more each time I watch it.she is never afraid of the creature just curious from the start. Still sad del Toro never made the final Hellboy film to make it a trilogy, but I really liked this the visuals and colours where used so well. He also really has a thing for aquatic humanoids. I'd of loved to have seen an Ab Sepian origin film.

    My theory/ thoughts is that Eliza is some sort of creature too. She was found ordained by the river, and has some connection to water. The Amphibian Man shows that he can heal as opposed to create. He heals Giles’ hair loss. So with Eliza’s scars, what if they were gills that were sewn up when she was adopted into the human world, and the Amphibian Man healed them back to what they were before.

    I think she’s obsessed with her feet because her “people” don’t normally have feet. Because she’s a mermaid. She was raised on land and became human after doctors sewed her gills shut when she was found as a baby. When fishman brings her into the water at the end, he’s simply healing her gills, as he healed baldie and healed his gunshot wound. I think she controlled water because she was a mermaid already, not anything “Gabe” did. He didn’t turn her scars into gills, he healed them.
