Man, this was fun. I do think bishop is special. I always loved how he subverts your expectations after the first movie when the ai goes crazy, but bishop is actually kind and compassionate and selfless.
Love Lance Henriksen playing Bishop straight and creepy at first but solidifies himself into someone you can trust with your life toward the end of the Aliens film.
Broken? No way. Special? That's an understatement. I'd call him... one of of kind. He was everything needed in this series. Genius, hero, synthetic human, friend. David was broken: Bishop was alive.
"Broken" is a tight little package of storytelling dynamite. Superb authorship. If the full-length even displays half the writing skills and Sci-fi creativity as wrought in the short, then I believe that "Bishop" will be an extraordinary read.
Wow, thank you so much for this. Outside of the Xenomorph and Ripley, the Alien franchise has so many well developed and awesome characters. Bishop being one of the best.
This would make a fantastic Alien spin-off film in the extended Alien Universe. The Bishop character is thoroughly fascinating in his scifi dystopian future world where AI and transhumanist values have transcended most but not all human values. The way the other identical androids move and think in unison is particularly chilling. Thanks for this upload.
It does give the reader a twinge of nostalgic satisfaction to know that our boy Bishop is unique among his peers, and his selfless personality sets him apart from his brothers and makes sense with what we saw on screen in the Aliens film. He was low key the second MVP among the heroes in that movie.
@@arcturionblade1077 I was hearing Lance Henrickson's voice looking at his character lines. He should do a voice-over for this quick before he shuffles off this coil 😄
@@TheJMBon 100% true, i wont drag on the movie much because we all know it was meh and they could have done much more with the material, but the Audio novel for an alternate A3 was awesome especially because of Bishop & Hicks spoken by the og cast. Out of the Shadows is awesome aswell, dunno how but the voice actress for Ripley sounds exactly like Sigourney Weaver.
Bloody spiffing, I'll let my dog know, I named him bishop after the hero himself. I honestly can't wait to buy this book. Thank you for the news and yet another top draw video, you are a scholar on the subject. ✌🏻❤️
Listening to Alien Theory episodes has become a regular routine for me at bedtime. This "Broken" story is definitely a great starting point for a prequal. Thank you A.T..
That was really good and makes for a great prequel story [would make a great animated extra for the film.] It not only shows us why he's so very human, but also adds an even greater level of complexity to the character by saying that despite his comments about not being able to harm a human, or allow them to come to harm, he really could have abandoned Ripley and Newt at the landing pad if he'd wanted to.
The "artificial persons" of the Alien series are some of my favorite characters, a sentiment obviously shared by Ridley Scott; Bishop's story is a good one and I feel like these characters, in their own way, are more frightening than the aliens themselves. The aliens, with their terrifying visage, are easy to identify as monsters while the synths look and sometimes behave like benign humans, essentially monsters hiding in plain sight. And while the androids in the alien series don't often act with outright malice, their complete lack of empathy make them delightful villains.
Bishop was the best red hering in Alien history, at first setting him up to be the next potential antagonist, yet turned out to be the hero who saves the day. Multiple times I might add! He had such an impact as a character, that I got genuinely sad when seeing him in such a bad condition in Alien 3 and when he finally was deactivated, I actually teared up. Seeing the other one later, made me mad. I felt as annoyed and angry as Ripley. Weird but true 😎
These books sound really excellent. I'm trying to get back into reading as I bought the new Aliens Bishop, your video has inspired me to get beyond the 1st chapter and learn more about Bishop. Keep up your excellent work. TS signing off ❤
I like the idea that occasionally a synthetic gets a bug that provides personality, curiosity, empathy etc. And that these are the synthetics who made the artificial humans such as Cole from Alien 4.
The only thing I like more than the special effects you've added (like the timer and excellent immersion-building scenes), but your voice, Derek. You are a natural narrator and it makes me happy to hear you read a story I have already read, but have never heard. Until now. =)
I was thinking it was a nice little origin story and by the end my heart swelled like the god danged Grinch at Christmas. What a heartwarming ending. I am buying the novel now.
i really liked this story. it helped us get to know bishop more and how he would find acceptance through the colonial marines that we get to meet in aliens.
Merry Christmas, and thank you AT! I think i may have heard part of this story before, but your narration is always a great part of any alien story. Thanks again!
Let's say it, this truly humanized Bishop. I remember seeing Aliens for the first time, noticing the difference in his character starkly from Ash. More recently, the stark difference from David as well. I believe Bishop is a truly noble person, artificial as he may be, he has morals. More than the sum of his parts or the programming embedded. This was a great short story. Kudos to the author and to AT. Thanks for sharing this further window into Bishop. And redundant as it may be, Lance Henriksen was a master executing this character. Wouldn't want anyone else to do it.
I've never read a novel on the Alien universe, but I'll have to pick this one up. I really dig the way the story is told through the eyes of an android and all the internal processes that pass for human thinking. It's intriguing for sure. Also Bishop is the best character in that particular movie. Hands down.
I really liked this story! One interesting thing to note is that if all of Bishop's line were named after chess pieces, then it kinda lends credence to the theory that Bishop II at the end of Alien³ was not actually the creator. A scientist named Bishop creating more Bishops makes sense, but if the scientist named them in a set and didn't have Bishop(the name) stand out, there's no reason to believe they actually made copies of their self.
One of the best parts of Alien 3 was seeing Ripley’s emotion after Bishop asks her to take him offline. He was her last remaining friend from Aliens. Made his face showing up later all the more saddening.
The prequel story that you read was excellent, I loved the ending! I hope the Bishop book explores more of him and Apones Marines.😊 That first interaction with Hudson playing with the knife makes the scene in Aliens that much more funnier and personal! I love that scene even more now. Bishop is more than just a piece of equipment, he's part of the crew.
Wow what a great video! I didn't see this when it first "aired" here. Your delivery, tone and cadence is really perfect for these Aliens related videos, and stories. Very nicely done. Enjoyable and engaging story! Thanks for this!!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! For this. I wasn’t aware of the prequel. For me it was delightful. I think she got the right vibe, for Bishop’s character
That's what I always loved about Steele. His dry sarcastic sense of humour. As a teen when I got into them, me and my friends got it straight away. I can understand His comments being lost in translation though. A legend. R.I.P Peter. Thanks for all the amazing music
It amuses me to think that there might be other synthetics (sorry, artificial persons) who look like Lance Henriksen running around unironically named Queen and Pawn, respectively.
I was going to wait to get this book until it came out in paperback but this is making me rethink that. Damn you Derrick and your fantastic videos! Happy Holidays all
As a huge fan of this ground breakin SF franchise, AT is a data gold mine 2 me not only further more we got a world class Alien Universe expert, remarkable acting voice, finest narrator n channel visuals/audio Ed. all in 1. What else?
Brilliant! Thanks so much for this!! We know how Rippley joined the Sulaco, we don't know the background of the team that awoke with her from hyper sleep. There's a chemistry - it's clear. What was the origin of their stories? Bishop and his curiosity was very well done. Need more of Bishop. I'd like to see Bishop, that model, resurrected into another body... with a better understanding of the zenomorph. Humans can come and go. Bishop should be a story, where the Queen Zeno can't put a finger on as the body can change. A formidable learning being as calculating as their species that can out match them and being respect to the Artificial being.
Yeah dude. You should definitely do audiobook style, bare minimum rundowns of all the alien universe materials (comics, books, short stories, video games). Maybe a long video of all the alien stories in their totatility?! That would be sick dude
There's a line in Aliens novel, I think it's in the portion where he elects to go to the transmitter tower. He says something like he knows he's expendable, but Hicks says he's not. Bishop is treated like he's human and he is most comfortable being treated that way. I'll have to dig out my novelization and find the exact passage. It might be earlier in the novel during the opening breakfast portion though.
I definitely love how Bishop picked up on the chess thing, I always mused that when he was torn apart by the queen it was, "queen to bishop". Maybe even a little Blade Runner reference?
Xcellent story. No, I've not read "Bishop" --- I don't know if anyone has speculated on this, but... just after Bishop had picked up Ripley & Newt to leave the surface, as the plant went up in an explosion..... you notice Bishop "blanked" out (in the cockpit) for a moment, during the blast. It was my speculation, that as Bishop was aware of the blast (& possible EMP?) he may have self rebooted, or somehow *_Suspended_* his own operations to minimize his own twitching, glitching or data spazzing.... I had always just speculated that Lance Henriksen had possibly self-realized such a moment for the Character, or maybe it WAS in the script, describing a: Momentary "self shutdown"
A synthetic named Rook huh? Fede Alvarez really is quite the fan of the franchise. Given that this Rook presumably looks identical to Bishop and his “brothers,” (so, Lance Henriksen), he is presumably not the same Rook (modelled on Ian Holm) we see in Romulus. But as Bishop says here, “someone likes chess.” Edit: now that I think about it, I wonder if Fede was also inspired by Broken when writing Andy. At least, the basic premise of comparison between perfect company synths, and a broken, defective, but more human one.
Don’t be fooled by Bishop’s calm and nice demeanor. He’s the perfection of the other 4. He is cunning and gangster af. He will disobey and be cunning if it’s needed and sees valid reason.

The AI in the first one (Ash) didn't go crazy. It did exactly what the company intended.
