718 Cayman is basically a better 911 and in fact I think its more 911 then a 911. 911 was a sports car now its like a supercar but 718 is a proper sports car.
I have a base with manual, a lovely interior, PASM, PDLS+, same wheels as here, sports exhaust, sports Chrono etc. it’s amazing. It’s the best Cayman on the road.
Don t tell everyone bro! The base Cayman is a no brainer. I sold mine for a C7 Z06 but on mine, I did a tune, downpipe from Kline Innovation and 100 cells sport cat. It pulled 392 hp and 550 nm of torque for 1350 kg. The turbo made it way more responsive than a GTS 4.0 or a GT4. Coupled to the PDK and Sport chrono pack, It was reliable and fun to kick the ass of M2s, M3s, M4s at traffic light. Mine was clocked at constant 3.7 from 0 to 100 kph and 100 to 200 kph in 9.0 sec. And it handled impressively! With the downpipe, it revealed the beast of the 4 cyl boxer engine. The sound was amazing.

The AT8 speed on the Corvette is definitely slower, a lot slower. The power after tuning the 718 makes it like a sleeper. I feel like the people who don’t like the flat 4 in the cayman forget that some of the older (and arguably rawest) Porsches had 4 cylinders too. Not to mention the 924/944, but that was an inline ofc
Nope, haven't forgotten that at all. Just don't like the noise or the turbo power delivery and response. That there are old Porsches with flat 4s doesn't change the noise the engine makes. You either like it or you don't. Ditto the response and power delivery.
Problem, IMO, isn’t 4 cylinders, it’s the emotional characteristics of the car. It’s a good sounding 4 cylinder engine, but it isn’t a good sounding engine (IMO). A Porsche is all about emotion for driving, and the 4 cylinder turbos don’t deliver the same emotion Porsche are known for. Personally, I think we should have seen a 5 cylinder engine in the S, or maybe GTS. It’s a fabulous engine and would go along way towards getting the emotion back - as those reading this will know, it can sound like a baby V10 at times. Can’t see the 4 cylinder being any better for emissions.
@@CameronRockliffe Five cylinders is a total non starter. Completely different configuration, no base engine to develop it from. An inline five would not fit, that's too long, too long. So, it would have to be some kind of weird VR5 type unit, which doesn't currently exist on the shelf. Why spend the money on that rather than just going with a flat six? Five cylinder makes no sense at all. Even less sense than four cylinder.
@@CameronRockliffehow much you know about Porsche how should sound typical Porsche? This engine is very emotional I love to have torque anytime. I hate rewing engine to app. 8th. rews to get the best, it is not motorbike. It is car not motorbike!
Also I strongly disagree with gearing and torque issues - both 2.0 and 4.0 do 115ish kph on the second gear w/PDK, so it applies to both of those and in regards to torque the only range where the stock 2.0 has more torque than 4.0 is 2-3k rpm and it’s never more than 30 Nm difference, which I doubt that is even noticeable. From the real-life experience - I was afraid of the possible deficit of the low-end torque in 4.0 since I’m used to turbocharged drivetrains, but when I actually had the possibility to test both of those back-to-back on track during the Porsche Experience event it was suprisingly quite the opposite - never felt any torque deficit in GTS 4.0, but definitely felt turbo lag and laggy throttle response in the base model. Soundwise the 4.0 is totally in a different league. Don’t get me wrong, both are great cars, I totally fell in love with the 718 when I tested only the Boxster T with base engine, but after I had opportunity to test both 2.0 and 4.0 back-to-back I strongly disagree with your opinion presented here - this 30ish Nm more torque between 2 and 3k rpm and 70ish kgs lower kerb weight in favor of the base model are doubtly noticeable, but I’m pretty sure that absolutely everyone will notice laggy throttle response, bizzarre sound and lower power output of the base one. Stock flat six version is just superior to stock base model in basically every way besides price, fuel economy and running costs.
I feel like I should bring up her that you compare back-to-back the cars with 1 price difference of almost 2 times and you admit they’re almost the same in terms of performance. I think it’s a huge compliment for a base Cayman. I guess a Cayman S with 2.5L and a good tune is the best option.
@@IvanOkhmatovskii but that’s not true. GTS 4.0 is way faster, has incomparably better and more linear power delivery, sounds way better and for sure will hold its value better, so telling that those are almost the same in terms of performance is just rubbish same as telling that the price difference is almost 2 times - if you’d spec up the base one with all of the goodies that come as standard in GTS 4.0, the F6 variant is only 25% more expensive than base and I would say that it adds AT LEAST 50% to the experience. Never drove S model, so I have no idea how good it is, I heard that the throttle response issue is addressed by using VTG in it, but one fact is sure - my spec of S would cost exactly the same as my spec of GTS 4.0, so you really have to dislike the F6 variant to choose the S instead. Base is also a great car, but if you can afford the GTS 4.0, then this is total no-brainer for me. It’s just way better and as we all know better is the greatest enemy of good.
@@vvarioPL you tried a stock 718T. I had one with a tune and downpipe. 550 Nm of torque max et much higher torque everywhere from 1500 up to 7500 rpm. I totally agree. The flat 4 is such a great engine. The weight savings, give it that extra dynamic in the corners. I've got a 718 Boxster GTS 2.5, pdk. It's my 4th Porsche owned. I've gone from air cooled flat 6 3.2 liter, no power steering, then an air cooled flat 6 3.6 liter with power steering, both manual coupes, then 3.4 liter H20 cooled Cayman manual, and now this tiny 2.5 flat 4 with pdk and soft top and some of the 911 turbo steering elements. 718 is the best of them all, it's so good at being a Porsche and not just another car with a fast sounding engine, it puts the power down with the pdk, way better than I could possibly do myself, it's Excellent in every way like a proper sport car should be. But it doesn't fit 2 bags of golf clubs like the Corvette, and thankfully so because it looks excellent as well unlike the Vette. I've never got so many compliments on a car before. And it sips fuel like a Toyota and is rated to be more reliable than the Camry.

There's a comment in this video about how this car has "shorter gears" (presumably than the rest of the 718 lineup?). That is a completely incorrect statement. The only 718 that has shorter gearing is the GT4RS. All of the other models have identical gear ratios (all PDK-equipped cars have the same ratios across models, and all manual-equipped cars have the same ratios across models)
Never tested the S 2.5, but the base 2.0 has a terrible turbo lag - maybe this tune fixes it, but in stock example the throttle response is just really disappointing.
@@9794458 Correct the S has the VTG Turbo, introduced in the famous 911 Turbo S range. That's why the name is wrong. Those 718's should have been named Porsche 718 Boxster/Cayman Turbo (S/GTS)
The cayman GTS 4.0L sounds good and the 4 cyl boxer sounds worse. But power wise and driving dynamics, the 4 cylinder is just better. Its lighter, has more torque and revs to 7500RPM which is alot. What do you need else?
The 4.0 is lazy. I love my 718 Boxster S and also the bassy sound that isn't catched on these TH-cam vids. Wouldn't trade it for a 4.0. A well tuned 2.5T can reach GT4RS levels.
I think the gt4 has the same gearing as this, but the gt4 has higher redline so yes every gear go to a higher speed, so it feels like you have to spend an eternity in every gear. Maybe check the speed at a set rpm in each car.
So the base cayman is the best cayman and caymans are better than 911. Accordingly the base cayman is the best Porsche available (except GT4RS) 😅 I suspect there is a slight bias in this review 😂. I had a 718s and loved it. I now drive a 981Gt4, it´s just in a different league.
My 2023 718 Boxster S Sportchrono/ Pdk and Sportsdesign package (= gives the extra cooling radiator ) did 295 in 6th gear. It has 7, and couldn't go faster because of traffic coming up. Those cars are near perfection. When you don't floor it, it consumes only 6L/ 100 km when you drive 100 km an hour on average. Chipped it will output approx 410 HP only by adjusting the curves inside the ecu. When you modify the cat and downpipe the S will output HP between the GT4 and GT4RS. These 718S's are epic!
Agreed that it’s nice for a reviewer to not just regurgitate the same old crap as many others -“oh, the six cylinder is so sonorous” 🤮 I’ve heard that so many times it truly makes me sick. This IS the better choice for this car (and it can be tuned because of the turbo). If I wanted a loud-ass car I’d get a Mustang.
2024 and you can find a 718 Cayman S going for the same price as a 2015. I love that Porsche purest hate the 718 they made them more affordable 💙. Keep your flat 6 some of us enjoy and appreciate innovation.
So basically you need to tune and void your warranty to end up with a car close to the cayman flat 6. It is a cool 4 cylinder but the 6 is just the much better sounding engine and it’s what Porsche is known for !
you dont need the sport chrono to do a launch. with sport chrono it gives u 6,200rpm clutch drop launch, without chrono u get 5,000rpm. Practically no difference.
I have a black 718 Boxster. The car looks so nice. When I picked up the car, I let my wife on the steering wheel and drive with my other car behind and beside home, just to see, how my pretty wife looks inside this nice car. 😅
The 718 Cayman S is just as quick as the Cayman GTS 4.0. Did Porsche purposely understate the horsepower rating of the Cayman S in order to sell more GTS models?
Leave it be underrated please haha.. I have a 718 Boxster and maybe put a tune on it as well, although I think 300HP is already enough.. Maybe still want to buy a GTS 4.0 some day.. Go buy 911's etc, much better cars for the money.. 😜

Yeah but it's a 13 plus sec car..on rolling they are damn slow
I have a 2020 Cayman S, I'm more pleased with low-mid range torque of it than what GTS 4.0 offers.
Love those bright colored porsches 👌
There's a comment in this video about how this car has "shorter gears" (presumably than the rest of the 718 lineup?). That is a completely incorrect statement. The only 718 that has shorter gearing is the GT4RS. All of the other models have identical gear ratios (all PDK-equipped cars have the same ratios across models, and all manual-equipped cars have the same ratios across models)
People sniff at the four cylinder are missing out. It’s fantastic.
I don't have a strong bias towards the flat six over the turbo 4, but you can't deny the flat six sounds way better.
It's a great car. No need for anything else. Loved the video thank you for posting.
GT4 en 991.2 GT3 gehad en nu een 718. Dit is de fijnste van de drie.
echt ?
dat is straf
heb een 981 en zoek een jonger model
overweeg een 718 base, maar moet toegeven dat ik twijfel
Never tested the S 2.5, but the base 2.0 has a terrible turbo lag - maybe this tune fixes it, but in stock example the throttle response is just really disappointing.
Yeah true
The tune solves it. With mine, the torque curve was higher everywhere and peaked up to almost 540 Nm.
i have a cayman S, no problem with turbo lag
@@9794458same here
@@9794458 Correct the S has the VTG Turbo, introduced in the famous 911 Turbo S range.
It has more than 350hp. Stage 1 is 350 and stage 2 more like 380 as we se times. Stage 1 100-200 is 10.5-11s
I have a 450bhp/420 lb/ft 2.0 litre Cayman 718. It might be interesting to see how that goes on the autobahn but I’m based in the UK.
I think the gt4 has the same gearing as this, but the gt4 has higher redline so yes every gear go to a higher speed, so it feels like you have to spend an eternity in every gear. Maybe check the speed at a set rpm in each car.
The sky blue 718 is my dream. Love it more than 911.
I did 297 km/h with the flat 4 gts it’s an amazing car to drive
My cayman 2.0 (BSR stage 1) 299 km / h 😅
My 2023 718 Boxster S Sportchrono/ Pdk and Sportsdesign package (= gives the extra cooling radiator ) did 295 in 6th gear. It has 7, and couldn't go faster because of traffic coming up. Those cars are near perfection. When you don't floor it, it consumes only 6L/ 100 km when you drive 100 km an hour on average. Chipped it will output approx 410 HP only by adjusting the curves inside the ecu. When you modify the cat and downpipe the S will output HP between the GT4 and GT4RS. These 718S's are epic!
The 4 cyclinder has more than enough power for the roads!
Tested and well said, better on legal roads everyday and better than 911 i own
people just look at the numbers. If you see the car in person it's very small and very light. Something like 300 hp for that size car is insane.
Weight is a thing, but also Cw. It are very low cars with great aerodynamics, not bricks.
Which one has most comfortable suspension ? How is the suspension ?
please review the cayman gts 4.0 pdk
Great job Max!
So basically you need to tune and void your warranty to end up with a car close to the cayman flat 6. It is a cool 4 cylinder but the 6 is just the much better sounding engine and it’s what Porsche is known for !
@AutoTopNL could you please compare Audi TTS to this ?
Portland, JAMAICA in the Building!!!
Got my 718s serviced recently. They suggested l take a new gts 4.0 for a drive. Couldn’t wait to get back in my tuned T4, its that good.
you dont need the sport chrono to do a launch. with sport chrono it gives u 6,200rpm clutch drop launch, without chrono u get 5,000rpm. Practically no difference.
Don t do launch control. It ruins the transmission!
@@StefBelgium uh…? You know Porsche can launch all day long right? Look up Porsche 911 Turbo S launch multiple times on YT
Is it tuned?
Cayman S > M4 all day long. Less power, but way better build quality.
Love the excitment
Realy nice Car, like the boxer engine👍
I have a black 718 Boxster. The car looks so nice. When I picked up the car, I let my wife on the steering wheel and drive with my other car behind and beside home, just to see, how my pretty wife looks inside this nice car. 😅
Despite what its still a porsche and beauty of a car 😍
Porsche is never underrated Max. 😏
There is no substitute. 👍🏿
The 718 Cayman S is just as quick as the Cayman GTS 4.0. Did Porsche purposely understate the horsepower rating of the Cayman S in order to sell more GTS models?
I ❤ Cayman 👍🏼🇲🇽
Sick ride!
Someone please polish this car! So many swirls on ORANGE….man, this car has been rubbed on badly.
If you want to come to the USA you can drive my stage 2 GTS 2.5 ;)
my guy casually talking about the car driving one hand 200 km/h
is this the 2.5 with opf?
4:27 Get away plates lol
Prefer 981 😉
Never been a fan of this car, rather have a full option hothatch for instance a GTI TCR or the recent a45s
did you drive one? The others are more practical but also a lot more boring to drive
Don't care about top speed, just getting speed quick.....
290Km/h in mine cayman S
Merci kelkoun zo2
its an amazing and capable car for sure. but i must say i dont like the sound at all. the flat 6 sounds fantastic. this sounds like a lawn mower.
“Don’t let anyone tell you, you need a six cylinders” because you need eight cylinders…
I hate V8 sounds
V6, i6 or F6 sounds better
"because you need eight cylinders"
-No Porsche fan ever
@@justsayno1734 No. Thank you
Leave it be underrated please haha.. I have a 718 Boxster and maybe put a tune on it as well, although I think 300HP is already enough.. Maybe still want to buy a GTS 4.0 some day.. Go buy 911's etc, much better cars for the money.. 😜
Not underrated. We just dont like Porsches that sound like Subarus.
Previously you did not like 4 cylinders and now u changed your opinion. Suspicious
When you are filming a car that sits so low, please don't stand over the car and point your camera over the top of it. Terrible angles, and always makes the car look funky.
Lada Niva 😂❤🎉
with options i would like its 100k euro, damn
Those are Carrera classic wheels, not Carrera S wheels
is there a manual version of the cayman?
Yes.
$100,000 underrated.
Berk.
Very expensive for a 4-cylinder. Should have a bigger discount used compared to 6-cyl.
718s instead
Funny how you talked sh*t about the 4 cylinder ecoboost mustangs but now defend the 2 lt 4 cylinders
it looks fun but it looks old af too, the interiors are so out of date damn
I still prefer the 6cyl engine with a manual gearbox.
The paint is very nasty, swirl city. :/
You're doing a 0-100 with an extra passenger
Underrated?!?
It costs like a F-Type R with 550ps V8.
no it does not not in Canada.
@@bluemoon8498 In Europe, Cayman starts at 80k euro stock, which is shamefully equipped...at around the same spec, 575hp 5.0 supercharged V8 F-Type R costs 105k, 300hp 2.0 Cayman is 100k(both cars can cost even more).
2.0 300hp F-type cost from 60k, and the 450hp V8 cost from 80k. Every F-type comes extremely well equipped.
I just dont know why you would go for this
At 80k its so expensive
Car with a C type
Hallo
Seems a bit cramped for a tall guy ?
Porsche with 4 cyc is an Audi
Not bad, for that price is really good car
I simply dont like the sound
That's not just you, and that's why they came up with 6 cylinder GTS 4.0 and GT4, and ultimately GT4RS with GT3 engine.
10:23
Automatic 4 cylinder? Good for the wife maybe?
you are clueless comrade about this 4 cylinder
@@olasek7972 she won't even know the difference
