    Some ideas for an over-stocked, no water-change system which can be implemented together: 1. Undergravel filter with a couple inches of fine gravel; 2. Marginals in perforated hanging baskets at the back of the tank; 3. An attached sump which mostly functions as a refugium for double the plants. This can even be in the form of a hydroponic herb or flower garden, so you don't need to hide it.

    Maybe you can use ro/di water? Some places have a dispenser with it. Or if you can buy some pre-conditioned water from a fish store?

    I'm sorry that you are having water issues. I hope it straightens out. Do you have snow in your area? You could use clean snow.

    i used to have a tank with a 100 mystery snails. I loved that tank. Went into the hospital. For 12 days. My daugther thought my snails bite. ( really) got out of the hospital. They started dying off. Left with 1.then i said if he died was not going to do it again.

    Hi! Beautiful tank. I have a question about the filters in a betta fish tank. How often do you need to change your filter pad and how do you prevent losing the beneficial bacteria on it? Is there a way to change the filter without having to restart the nitrogen cycle?

    • @Lifewithpets72
      @Lifewithpets72  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. They're sponge filters so all we do is rinse them in aquarium water approx once a month. You should not need to restart a cycle once the tank is established and filters cleaned.

    heya! do you have any suggestions for filters that i could get at petsmart or petco id love to start a tank like this!

    • @Lifewithpets72
      @Lifewithpets72  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it’s for shrimp then sponge filters are the best. A hang on back filter would suck up the baby shrimp and snails.

    Do shrimp and snails have to acclimate before being out in a tank like fish?

      If the water parameters are very different it would be wise too yes. Our tank parameters are all very similar.

    Can you use distilled water..love that snail..so big

    • @Lifewithpets72
      @Lifewithpets72  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Too many tanks for that. You could but it’s not got all the minerals needed. It would be a temporary measure where able.

      NO it would kill literally anything but certain wild Bettas and carnivorous plants.

    How are you able to get the eggs to hatch.If I leave mine in the tank they fall in the water and I do not have much luck using an incubator.

    • @Lifewithpets72
      @Lifewithpets72  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can try a do a video on it from start to finish. How do you have your incubator set up?

  • @mellewedin8221

    I was also wondering how many mystery snails can you raise up in a 10 gallon. I had 2 clutches hatch out on me. Well 3. I can't handle 3 at time, I'm not big on putting healthy creatures to sleep and bringing them to my local Petco or PetSmart isn't a option they die with days. My local pet store is at it's max I just brought them 60 semi adult snails. But I do have one clutch in a 10 gallon grow out with a few adults, I have another clutch in a container, and broke up a clutch of about 400 between my 40 breeder and my 20 long. My 20 long has high stick level to being with. So most of those snails are going to have to somewhere.

    • @Lifewithpets72
      @Lifewithpets72  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do a lot of snails in a 10 gallon if it’s just to grow them out. The only thing is it will need a lot of water changes. I had to regularly do three 50% water changes a week on this tank to keep parameters good. Even will all the plants it would get high fast. Due to needing to feed the babies a lot and then they produce a lot of waste.

    Shrimp like low PH and snails like higher PH. How do you keep them together and keep them healthy?

    • @Lifewithpets72
      @Lifewithpets72  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      pH is not something I try to alter. I think once you start adding chemicals etc it just causes more issues. Our water is around 7.0-7.2. Our snails thrive and our shrimp colony is huge and been going for over 4 years.
