  • Answering a popularly asked question, hope OBLers don't hate me too much :) If there is anything I misrepresented from OBL let me know, but I hope my explanation still makes some sense.

    I think a lot of people are missing the point of this video. I agree with you on a lot of things you say and it makes sense why you personally don't like OBL and still recognise it as the fastest method currently, and the topics you tie into the discussion are really interesting. Really nice video!

    • @janosaw1916
      @janosaw1916 ปีที่แล้ว

      In theory yes, however it probably wouldn't be worth it as you would have to have slower turning for an incredibly long time(if you know opa imagine that for 3-4x as long). It wouldn't be worth it to save 3-5 seconds.

  • @sixstringcalgh
    @sixstringcalgh ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Love ya Sam, but it's definitely taken from the same angle of someone who a) like your first point is "lazy" and doesn't want to learn algs (understandable, but like you said, this is lower-effort than what you've learned before) and b) someone who is distant enough from a method to not understand it well enough, which you did state in your video as well.
    Like Daniel said in the sq1ers discord, people have different solutions, get different obls, pbls, etc. There's quite a bit of flexibility there that can be explored (and to some extent is explored). When I'm competing with people who also use OBL and PBL, I very rarely have the same solutions. Sometimes that's helpful, sometimes it's not.
    DLP is very viable and maybe even full OBLP (I definitely think so). This would also be a 2 look method and honestly feels more up your alley. You could even just do DLP and similarly to how you do PCOP and don't pause because you look at the last slice to see what's on the right bottom corners, you could do the same with DLP to learn only a few pieces. It would be more mentally taxing, but I think it honestly fits in with your solving style.
    The EO approach is also pretty interesting, but there are so many more algs you'd want to learn there specifically because of how each do you have has 16 permutations where the unsolved edges can be (minus things like opposite edges, solved edges (duh) and all edges). Effectively this is the same as learning 2 alg PBL 16x for most EO cases and I think there would be enough short algs to justify that, but I'm also saying this as someone as distant from that method as you are from OBL.
    I get you want to have fun with your method, but honestly OBL made sq-1 100x more fun to me *especially* since I learned it similar to F2L as intuitive approaches with algs for particularly hard cases, which helped with flexibility in my solutions. That being said, fun for one person isn't always fun for another.
    I also used to (and admittedly still do) preserve blocks when possible to hopefully get an OBL skip in CSP, but I realize that generally speaking, it gives worse cases to do that (although it does avoid Yoshi Yoshi).
    Also, your 4.45 was with OBL :)
    TL;DR
    I don't think you have enough experience with OBL to actually warrant what you've said. Sure, you don't have to learn it, but it's really easy and I think based off what you like doing in solves (in this video) I think you'd fall in love with OBL.

    • @CubeMasterYT
      @CubeMasterYT  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi, thanks for taking the time to watch/comment! There definitely is much more variety with OBL than I represented, but I still dislike the meta of pausing so much and continuous "recognize case, turn fast" cycle. I'm sure there's lots to OBL that I would enjoy, but there's other parts of Square-1 I find more interesting/want to work on (however as you mentioned, OBLP would definitely get me into the method more, however I still doubt how well it can be done let alone how well I can do it). I think OBL makes sense and is more fun for 99% of people since it's exponentially better than CO/EO, but I already have an "OBL" method that I enjoy and have been using for years that I don't want to give up... just yet. We'll see though :)
      Also, 4.45 was actually POBLP (these acronyms are getting too long lol)
