Discovering Wisdom

  • Many of us are very self-critical, and whenever negative emotions appear, we fight or suppress them. This leaves us feeling bad afterward. In this short video, Mingyur Rinpoche teaches us how criticizing ourselves creates more problems. He shows us how we instead can find wisdom within our emotions and come to see that our true nature is already good.
This video includes subtitle captions in Arabic, English, Russian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Nepali, Bulgarian, and Swedish.
To learn more about meditation or about Mingyur Rinpoche and his teachings, please visit the Tergar Meditation Community online at learning.tergar.org.

    Video summary/ points:
    1:24 Our nature is good.
2:22 But why are we good? What are the good qualities?
We all have wisdom, love, compassion, skills, capabilities, powers, knowledge. Some we know, some is yet to be discovered. We are more capable than we may recognise.
3:26 the Buddhist way of seeing things: Vajrayana. Seeing wisdom within the defilements.
3:48 The five poisons / five defilements:
    1) hatred / anger
    2) desire / attachment / craving
    3) ignorance (not knowing)
    4) pride / arrogance
    5) jealousy
4:13 from these defilements may come problems and suffering, like depression, panic etc, which influences your behaviour - causing disharmony, violence; social and even physical problems.
5:24 These defilements are "man made" - human made problems. This makes us sound bad, right? Not quite.
Our fundamental nature is GOOD. But we might not see that while the poisons are at work.
6:22 our mind is like water.
Just as the surface of water may have waves, if you go to the depths, you find pure, pristine, still water.
The surface is where the defilements are - not at the depths.
7:15 ask yourself: what do I really want?
The defilements may make themselves known; the first answers you get may come from the surface level.
    Anger: "I don't like this" / "I don't want this"
    Craving: "I would like this!"
    Ignorance: "I don't know..."
    Pride: "I'm the best!"
Jealousy: "my friend has become better than me..."
These all relate to "I"; I want, I don't want.
9:00 now just assume and ask, "IF I can get all these things, THEN what do I really want?"
There are many layers, just keep going further. After some time, you'll really connect with your basic wisdom, which is always within you.
Note: You may misinterpret your basic wisdom, interpret it the wrong way.
9:36 this basic wisdom is the real cause of happiness, of freedom.
11:03 the basic wisdom is not related to the defilements. It is really genuine.
11:22 so what is the basic wisdom?
There is love, compassion. You understand the impermanence of life. The surface claims "permanence"! But deep down, we realise the impermanence. This is where there may be fear and internal conflict.
    Let the surface mind go.
13:06 when you breath deeply, your mind relaxes. Then you can connect with that basic wisdom.
13:33 so, start with the question "what do I really want" and dive deep. Then you may find something really meaningful.
Each person's journey and findings will be different.
    🙏🙏🙏

I get out of my depression with meditation. Continue with your path and you will get out too. The black dog will always be there, but he won't be you. Get it? Take time but works. Is the natural path, i think. I never liked the idea of drugs...

I do understand what you are saying. When I was in hospital (just three months for a broken leg) I "learned" myself to become in this pure state. When I came back in the "real world" it became harder and harder to get back in this blissful state of mind. Sometimes I succeed to get back, and of course trying too hard is in fact craving so I can slip out very quickly. I am not sure if it is fair to blame our society but it makes it really difficult. It seems so double that being effortless costs so much effort.

    • @RainbowSunshineRain
      @RainbowSunshineRain ปีที่แล้ว

Yes it takes a lot of practice before being able to do this in a city.
That’s why some get into long retreats.
Also daily longer meditations might help.

At first person tries to recall his inner world and trying
different types of practices and doings , but he easily forgets inner world
when busy in world affairs. Then there comes a time when he will become tired
of every practices and doings, .. and his sensitivity start to increase. Then
there comes a time when his sensitivity becomes so deep that he does not need
to remember his inner world but he will get reminder and messages from
everything around him and whatever happening inside or outside of him.
Everything drags him inside, and he becomes so deep that he starts to
understand the inner language which is soundless and formless . Then there
comes a time when he will become stunned, surprised by vast beauty , by
unlimited joy vaster than any ocean , stillness deeper than any valley. Then he
will see his face in the mirror and will be surprised that he never saw and met
this person before and everything looks utterly new.

What he says is 100% true. At 04:05 on five defilements please add "fear" when ignorance is mentioned. Fear is a very powerful force and when he mentions desire or craving add the word lust to our understanding. [plz don't confuse this fear with the 'fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. In English language a given word can have more than one meaning or usages]. I hope this comment will help some of us to integrate this great knowledge from Thatagata - The Buddha into our lives! My pranams/salutations to the Master Rinpoche.

Thank you so much. I was thinking all these days, that WISDOM means, knowing that objects and people exist around you is a FACT. Your thought relate you with objects and make you feel real that the object belong to you. Similarly, this thought make you feel that the person belong to you, which is not a fact. Thought has also created a word called Relationship, husband, wife etc. It make you feel real that he oe she belongs to you and relates to you, which is total mental projection. From that false relationship is born attachment, feelings etc etc. So all these days, I was thinking that this is WISDOM. You helped me understand that my understanding is false. I now understand that the thing behind the words, LOVE & COMPASSION is real WISDOM. I will now try to understand what is the thing behind the word LOVE & COMPASSION. Thank you.

Absolute uncertainty is a certainty. Absolute impermanence is permanent. Awareness of both unveils their vacuity, their emptiness, and it brings peace, joy and wisdom to life. From that emptiness (i.e. Sunyata) sprout full potential and freedom.
