So the type of insurance being discussed is called Business Continuity Insurance, it is designed to cover expenses and revenue loss during a disaster. It generally covers a few areas
1 - Fixed costs (so rent, equipment depreciation, any costs incurred by the business while it can't operate)
    2 - Lost profits
3 - Training new staff (if your staff get other positions during the closure and you need to replace and train them)
    4 - Repair costs
The issue with the current broadway closure is that the insurance doesn't generally cover salary for staff not working. An average broadway production can have salary expenses of ~175K/week and there are 40 closed broadway houses right now. That would be ~7M/week to keep people technically working and replace all the lost wages. One bit of good news is the NY has waived the one week wait time for unemployment insurance which will cover 66% of lost wages up to $405/week for the people who just lost their jobs. The bad news is that $1600/month doesn't go far in NYC at all

The "Well it only affects old people!" mentality is horrific. You're not immune. You may not show signs, and just be a carrier. If you are not being cautious for your own health, do it for other people. The spread may be inevitable but by slowing it down you are giving doctors and scientists the valuable time needed to help those at risk.

Let's be honest, all the theatre kids were coping relatively well with the virus news until Broadway closed. Now we've officially entered the Dark Times.
I think here in the UK, more extreme measures are going to start racking up fairly quickly - with sports events and the like being postponed or cancelled left and right I think it's only a matter of time before they take the step of officially preventing large gatherings. I work at a cinema and there's barely been anyone in for days. Just this evening (a Saturday) there were 16 people in in total when normally we'd be getting that as a minimum in just one screen. It's also noticeably just more quiet in general and people seem to be more conscious of things like skin contact. It's going to be a weird few months, that's for sure.

I wonder if they'll postpone the Tonys and give these shows a chance to open. I mean, it's not really fair if there's like 2 musicals eligible because they opened in late summer/fall. These shows NEED a proper preview period to work out all the kinks and bugs. Understudies and swings need a chance to learn their tracks (see: Diana the Musical fiasco with previews being canceled because understudies haven't been fully trained yet).

I went to New York for my 30th (12th March!) and booked tickets to see Beetlejuice that night, for the same reasons as you. I desperately wanted to see it before it closed. I walked past the Moulin Rouge theatre as the Matinee was meant to go in and everyone was so confused. All you heard were murmurs that it wasn't happening and then they were handing out letters at the actual theatre. Then of course the release went out that everything was shutting at 5pm, it was heartbreaking but I completely understand why they did it. An usher at six was tested positive so it had already started affecting Broadway. I just hope everyone in the community will be okay.

What is really interesting to me is how freaked out everyone is but mostly how everyone tries to guilt trip me when I go out. As of yesterday all schools, cafes and restaurants have been closed in the Netherlands up until April 6. I work at a supermarket and as we all know, people are freaking out and buying years worth of supplies right now. We don't wear gloves because it is basically pointless, that would only work if we could change gloves every customer, which is impossible since it's soooo busy. And then the same people who go out of their way to buy every roll of toiletpaper they can find get angry at me because I told one of my co-workers I had a headache and they got mad I came into work that day, while every fulltimer has called in sick because they're older and worried (which I understand). So every high school and uni student gets called into work every single day, I've been working for five days straight to cope with all the people losing their minds and get angry that the supermarket is basically empty and I get called selfish because I leave my house to help them with the groceries they apparently so desperately need? People need to calm down.

I live in Sweden and here most theaters are still open and running, but the government has decided that we can't have more than 500 (invited) people in the same place. This means there can be about 400 audience members since the ushers, ensemble, tech crew, band etc. have to be included. I work as an usher at one of the biggest theaters in the Swedish capital and the last 3 days we've had about 200 guests for each performance, the theatre has 1200 seats. It's crazy but still good that some shows are still open. A lot of people are also choosing not to come because they're scared, which I understand too. My bosses have been emailing every customer individually about wether or not they can come to the show. I think they let the 400-ish people who bought their tickets first come, but not if they're in big groups. The other customers don't get their money back. They'll only get their money back if the theatre itself choses to cancel all performances, but so far there hasn't been more restrictions from the government other than the 500 people-rule and that's why they're still running. At lest everyone on and off stage still get paid.
All that aside, working as an usher is so much fun and has taught so much about theatre!

herd immunity scares me so much as someone who is immunocompromised and at high risk of this virus - just having everyone infected to develop resistance to it will not work for myself and so many others, and bojo really just seems to think that we're expendable which is what upsets me so much.
also i have a trip booked to manchester to see the new back to the future musical in less than two weeks and it was so much money, but nothing has been cancelled and i am worried about losing my money as well as going along to a public space where myself, others around, and the actors could be put seriously at risk. it's such a scary time for everyone, and performers' health deserves to be put at the forefront as much as anyone else.

Luckily, my school has said that they’ll still give out free lunches to those in need. But I know that many children will be hungrier than usual from other schools. We were allowed one show (instead of the original 4 planned) and audience members had to sit 2 chairs apart from each other. We also live streamed it for people who had gotten tickets to watch if they couldn't come and while I thought and still think it was a good idea, the technology required for a high quality stream wasn't available to us and the stream wasn't that watchable as a result. I think live streaming performances is a amazing idea, as long as they have access to the technology and professionals who know what they're doing and can make it a good viewer experience.

It’s frustrating because I’m losing out on opportunities to book a job after all of this is done, but it makes a lot of sense to be safe. Dance studios in NYC are still open with 50% capacity in classes to allow for social distancing. I’m still working my restaurant job with 50% capacity and about 50% staff working. It’s a really weird time here in NYC - it really feels like a ghost town outside and on public transportation. Our Government took action Thursday to close all schools and colleges, I’m a vocal coach here in Ireland and self employed. Thankfully our government have told banks and landlords to not charge people for their mortgages and rent until people are back to work and the closure is lifted. Other companies have chosen to close including theatres, music venues and the majority of pubs and restaurants in the city I live for the safety of their staff and patrons. It’s a stressful time for everyone involved, it’s the fear of the unknown. I can only speak for the city where I live and I’m proud to see the action taken by the employers was so quick and the reaction from the public has been nothing but positive. At the end of the day your health is something you can’t replace and although some are lucky to be healthy others aren’t. I’ll be teaching lessons online from my home these next 2 weeks during the closures and possibly longer if people don’t adhere to the recommendations from the HSE. Although I’m now allowed to make a claim from the government for some supplementary income during this time, so many people will be doing the same and will see a huge back log of work for those who are dealing with these claims.

I was supposed to be in London today. My family and I were supposed to be coming from the US but because of how many cases there were in proximity to where we’d be staying AND the fact that both me and my sister’s school would have possibly required us to quarantine for 14 days if we did go, we pushed the trip to mid June. We also had tickets to Six on Broadway for the 12th they aren’t coming back until the 13th. And we have no idea if we can reschedule. My mom had sports tickets as well but pretty much all seasons have shut down. The major theatre where tours come through cancelled their next show as well. My whole family is pretty disappointed all of our plans have completely disappeared.

Can I just say... There is a comedy group I follow and LOVE called the Tin Can Brothers and they are a small comedy group and they were doing a live show called “Kill Our Guests 2” and they are going to film it in the empty theatre and release digital tickets.
I don’t know if that will be possible for Broadway, tours etc to do but I feel like, as Amy said, that would make more money compared to nothing. I am an Australian and so I haven’t seen any Broadway shows and while yes, I’m not proud of it, I do watch Bootlegs. It is the only way for me to experience the magic of theatre through shaky, very crappy recordings of musicals. Yes. I know that it isn’t good but if Mrs. Doubtfire on Broadway (for example) filmed it and released it as a digital ticket. I would buy it.
I feel like, as long as the cast is happy to do it, they should film their show and release it as a digital ticket for the show. For Beetlejuice, for example, that could make the fans happy and mean that their legacy doesn’t get lost in debt.
That’s just my thoughts. Please theatre people let me know if that could work. I am so curious to see if that could possibly be a longer term solution as well.

I think it's inevitable that most UK theatres get closed but it just depends on what the government defines as 'mass gathering'. I wonder whether when large theatres will close we'll see small fringe theatres thrive. I think regional theatres with Studio type spaces will try and keep them open. I work front of house at a performance venue and I'm very torn. Yes, closing venues might be safer but it's in times like these we need the performing arts to bring joy. The government has a difficult job in finding what will work for reducing spread of physical health issues but also protecting people's mental health.

I work in a large cinema in a big UK city and, although we're not officially on lockdown, I disagree with the idea that the UK isn't feeling it's effect. All of the big Easter releases that would have paid our wages (James Bond, Quiet Place 2, Secret Garden, Peter Rabbit, Fast and Furious) have been pushed back, leaving us with no other choice than to just keep showing films that have already been on for weeks. Our numbers have dropped dramatically and, while I do think it would be a good idea to shut for a couple of weeks, I'm not convinced the company would pay us for that time. You're absolutely right that having our health is the most important thing. But, as someone on a zero hour contract, the fear of not being able to pay my bills or put food on the table is very real and very scary. These are tough times, all we can do is take it a day at a time and be kind to each other ❤️

Hey Amy, were you aware of the Scott Rudin company thing offering cheaper tickets (all seats $50 I believe?) a couple of weeks ago when broadway wasn’t getting its usual audience intake because of COVID19? And then obviously the time frame those tickets were valid for is when broadway went dark... ALSO ex west end foh here, agree with you that it’s safer to take precautions and close the west end but theatres over here aren’t insured to do so without taking too big of a risk. They have to wait for the government to make that decision for them, which considering how our government hasn’t really responded to anything, doesn’t look good 😔

I genuinely don’t think the government understands herd immunity. In order to reach herd immunity in the uk roughly 40 million people would have to get the virus. The mortality rate in Italy for the virus is currently approximately 7%. That would mean that in order to achieve the government goal of herd immunity, almost 3 million people would die. I really don’t think they’ve thought that through

Because if shows don’t open until the week of April 12th that give 16 shows 10 days to try and get tony nominations. And if they don’t do that then that is 16 shows that aren’t eligible for Tony’s ever again.

I am SUPER conflicted about the West End closing. I want performers and theatregoers and everyone who works in the theatres to be safe but with WE closing will they still get paid? will the show lose money thus maybe not making it possible for it to extend its run? Then there is also the more selfish aspect of it being that I have 2 London trips booked (one in April and one in May) which I have paid flights, hotels and shows for where I would lose a lot of money and experiences... I‘ve already lost money bc I should have been going to Vienna this weekend and I‘m very probably having to cancel another trip. The West End closing would result in two more cancelled trips.
I‘m aware that that‘s a very selfish take on things and my main concern is for everyone to be safe but then again there is the money issue for them🤷🏼‍♀️
