A friend played me this track from the orihinal album when we ended up at his house after a pub crawl kn my 20th birthday. That was 50 years ago tonight. Just had to play this tonight!
I had never understood the intensity of two guitarists playing parallel and complementarily to each other as well as the other musicians UNTIL this video --wow! The amazing talent and energy!!
My absolute favourite version of this painfully beautiful song, with that spine tingling piano! Incredible 💜 "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?" - Lyrics that haunt my mind & soul 💯
Skynyrd was just a 2 guitar band after Ed King left and just got Artimus Pyle on drums. This is pretty much All Allen Collins on lead guitar with Gary on rhythm. This is what impresses me the most.
I miss the original ensemble soooo much. The crash occurred 7 days after my 21st birthday 😢. I had managed to see them live several times before that horrific day in rock history.
Essa performance em minha opinião foi a melhor da história da banda em uma transmissão e cara naquela época deve ter sido incrível vem ao vivo esse momento!!
I saw them at the Newcastle City Hall , absolutely blown away not soon after that , that terrible aircrash happened , Freebird , one of the greatest rock anthems ever .
If I leave here tomorrow Would you still remember me? For I must be traveling on, now Cause there's too many places I've got to see But, if I stayed here with you, girl Things just couldn't be the same Cause I'm as free as a bird now And this bird you can not change Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh And this bird you can not change And this bird you can not change Lord knows, I can't change Bye, bye, baby, it's been a sweet love Though this feeling I can't change But please don't take it so badly Cause Lord knows I'm to blame But, if I stayed here with you, girl Things just couldn't be the same Cause I'm as free as a bird now And this bird you'll never change Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh And this bird you can not change And this bird you can not change Lord knows, I can't change Lord help me, I can't change Lord, I can't change Won't you fly high, free bird, yeah
I don't understand why his little brother gets all the credits for this rolololon if he was the one who presented it for the first time it's ugly that because he killed himself in a plane they ignore that well I'll leave them for homework I hope they tell me why
True, man. Such a disgraceful flag. Amazing performance, but it’s hard to ignore the sheer evil and brutality that flag represents. People calling you offended or triggered or whatever are missing the point.
It blows my mind that Billy Powell was just a roadie who was like “if I was in the band I’d play free bird like this” and he straight up killed it and joined the band thereafter.
Since Gary has passed away, here is a short story I'd like to share with you: When I was 12 or 13 (I am 26 now), I came home from school one day and wanted to see this song performed live (I'd just known the studio version to that day)... So I started Yt on my mum's old notebook and found this video. From the first second, i felt kind of hypnotized by Gary's appearance and awsome slide playing, for 10 min and 13 seconds, I was in an other dimension. I felt so nostalgic, so peaceful and at the same time so powerful and happy when the solo started... This video gave me the feeling, that I am okay just the way I am (it was a hard time when i was 13). This video helped me so much to deal with feelings and emotions I couldn't handle or wasn't allowed to show. So thank you, Lynyrd Skynyrd and especially Gary for this short amount of freedom, happiness and peacefulness! Every time I watch this again, it's like timetraveling back to this moment! Sorry for my english and if this story is not exciting for someone. But for me, it was important to share it with someone since it is may most significant Skynyrd-moment. Thanks for reading this! Thank you for everything, Gary, I love you! Greetings vom Germany
Great testimony. After the plane crash in 1977, every bar in the South with a Live Band was guaranteed before they finished playing that night, someone was going to stand on a table or chair and yell out to the band, " Play Free Bird ". FYI : On TH-cam there is a good Pictionary of the a Memorial in Gillsburg, MS at the crash site, ( Lynyrd Skynyrd Memorial ).
Hard to believe every single one of these wonderful men are now officially Free Birds. They’re all gone from this world but are all reunited in Heaven. Thank you Lynyrd Skynyrd for this wonderful song. You’ll never be forgotten! ❤
This was one of the first five youtube videos I downloaded over dial up connection around 2008. Thankfully it steered me away from Aerosmith's Dream On (its okay), and toward Jimmy Page's stairway to heaven "dragon suit" extended live solo. Ronnie was influenced by zeppelin. The downloads took hours, but were worth it and I could watch them over and over. I got a decent guitar around the same time and haven't stopped playing since.
Wow love this I have had people I love pass away but I understand with problems some of us have Free Bird sometimes we can't change please understand God and Bless and pray for are Brothers and Sisters fighting for the Right to be FREE
This one goes out to my mommy, daddy, and the love of my life dash My true soulmate... My angels. I know you are all resting in peace with each other and flying free as a bird. Will be together again at some point whether it's inappropriate or not but it's not to me so I really don't give a s*** and I know that you have mine and we are still together but in a different form. Not a day goes by that I don't think of each and every one of you. That goes for you Roxie and Sadie as well.... Your daddy will take care of you now. I love you and I miss you all!

What a shame this version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's best song 'Freebird' is disappointing because because over a minute of its ending is missing from this video. Just as it gets ready for the iconic last minute it stops dead.
The piano, specifically in this performance, makes me choke back tears every time, guaranteed
Did you know that Gary is playing this slide in standard tuning. With this kind of precise control he should have been a brain surgeon on the side.
A friend played me this track from the orihinal album when we ended up at his house after a pub crawl kn my 20th birthday. That was 50 years ago tonight. Just had to play this tonight!

allen should have been in the top 20 of guitar players that ever live
When rock and roll was a way of life not just an accessory.
Heard when I was a young boy with my dad in his Cadillac on a country road the last part where Allen gets into his solo powerful moment I was hooked
Saw them in Cardiff in late 1975. Totally awesome
