Reliving The War takes a close look at the "Monday Night War" era of professional wrestling. With WWF Raw is War and WCW Monday Nitro on television every Monday night, fans had to decide which show to watch. This resulted in a TV ratings battle between WWF & WCW with both companies trying to put on their very best shows every Monday night and, eventually, the Monday Night War became a battle for survival.
On Nitro this week Bret Hart takes on Booker T; the winner gets a shot at the WCW United States Championship. Scott Steiner vs Bill Goldberg headlines the show, and the nWo sabotage the final moments of the Nitro broadcast by taking over the satellite feed. During this takeover the nWo make fun of Roddy Piper, Ric Flair, Steve McMichael and Arn Anderson.
On the WWF channel Vince McMahon seeks vengeance against The Undertaker. McMahon books a Kane vs Undertaker Inferno Match for the main event, but the Undertaker says he has a special surprise for the Chairman. Public Enemy make their Raw debut in a match against the Brood, Sable's number 1 fan finally gets to speak to her hero, and if X-Pac can beat Chyna in a 1-on-1 match he'll earn himself a shot at Shane McMahon's European Championship.

I been watching this show every week for over 3 years now.
Me too
It's an incredible body of work
Watched pretty much every episode since Wrestlemania 1998
Same here!!
Haven't missed one yet myself!
The way Paul Wight gently moved Vince, who is not in any way a small man, is just ridiculous.
Man you ain’t lying 😳
I thought it was as impressive as it was funny.
That's what she said
Say what you want about Vince, but he had the greatest facial expressions in wrestling history. The face he made was hilarious there
I think that scene made entire episode😂
looking forward to transition of "no gimmick needed" Paul Wight, to "gimmick definitely needed" big show in 2 weeks 😂
I'm curios why.
He really shouldn't need a gimmick. I mean look at him!
Andre 2.0
For a second I thought this comment was referring to his upcoming AEW match.
That one's gonna put some butts in seats... Good grief!
Don’t forget that one week in between where they were calling him “Big Nasty Paul Wight” (not to be confused with his later nickname “Big Nasty Bastard”).
Well atleast there's No More BS these days.
😅👍
And then the endless heel/face/heel...face..heel turns.
I can't believe they cut away from a Booker Bret match for a Disco skit, the closer we get to the end, the less and less suprised by the ultimate outcome I am.
Disco's got it like that. Too legit to quit.
I just realized, we're two episodes away from the Nitro with no wrestling in the 1st hour
Your username is perfect for commenting about the first hour of Nitro
With the greatest Ric Flair run-in ever? Looking forward to it
The Bam Bam chinlock spot had me dying. Great episode so far
Now we need someone to do Nerve Pinches or even an Ear Clap like Piper did at SuperBrawl '99.
All that was missing was Bios going "Greetings from Asbury Park!"
Shamrock is complex.
Date his Sister- angry.
Dump his Sister- angry.
Him actually dating his ‘Sister’- happy.
When Paul Wight moved Vince with ease, it made me think of Y2J anytime he said “step aside junior”
The Hogan impersonation of Flair was GOLD
Kudos to Nash for doing the job to Rey. Just a shame WCW never did anything with Rey being unmasked
Its a testament to both this channel and the Monday night wars that even after all this time this is still so enjoyable to watch and better than most of today's television.
Heel David Flair was a shock....just wish they'd have at least given him some dark or thunder matches to settle in before the swerve.
Definitely!
If they had spent a few weeks of him gettin his ass kicked like Zach Gowen... AND Ric constantly giving him pep talks about starting from the bottom and paying dues. And THEN the heel turn... that would've been nice
Yes! Would love to hear bischoffs thoughts on why this didn't happen
No
Rey beating Nash was one of the coolest moments in the Monday Night Wars, mask or no. My Math teacher was a huge Kevin Nash fan, and jokingly made a big deal about how fast that three count was.
No
Scott Norton's character simply represents everyone who was watching wcw at that time
I think he quietly leaves the NWO like Rick Rude did earlier. He does not get injured or kicked out of the group before it implodes or fizzles out.
Deep
It's amazing how this show has continued for the last few years and it's still fun to watch
That's what she said
It just got good in the last 6 months tbh
The blue meanie gimmick was far better than his later kevin owens one for me. Should have had a feud with Road Dogg though, the promos would've been fun.
Scott Steiner has always been great and underrated as a singles wrestler, he was one of the best things during the dying days of WCW
Not sure if anyone has looked into the "11th of July" teasers, but in the 1999 RTW timeline, July 11th is the date of Bash At The Beach 1999 (of CageMatch low score infamy and the source of the Junkyard Invitational). On the WWF side, this was the Sunday Night Heat where The Rock cut THAT promo on Billy Gunn
Thank you. I was hoping someone in the comments would do the detective work so I didn't have to lol
In the event the "11th of July" teasers reflect 2024 and not 1999, the episode of Reliving The War that day (barring another break) would be the October 25th, 1999 episode, the night after Halloween Havoc. Not Vince Russo's first Nitro as booker, but the start of him implementing his own new booking plans after a PPV build that he didn't initiate (for one, the interference-laden 32 person WCW title tournament begins on that Nitro)
Seeing Hogan dressed as Ric Flair is a once in a lifetime occurrence
It was way better when Vince did it
Rough day at work but always got RTW to come home to
I swear I love this series it brings back memories of my teenage years and feels like the Monday night wars all over again and I miss WCW wished they were still in business
Video Idea: Ric Flair ring attire colors. It is said he wears RED when he’s gonna lose and BLUE when he’s gonna win. May be fun to explore!
He wore Blue at WM24.
He wore red last week and lost.
But what about when he wears green
There was the thing that Savage would wear a matching hat if he was winning, a non-matching hat if he was losing. I've never cared enough to look into it, though.
And early in his career, he also had purple.
This is the episode I've been waiting for since the start of this series. I went to this Nitro at the Arco Arena in Sacramento. I was in the 8th grade. I remember the Rey , Kevin Nash promo. I remember seeing Booker T and being surprised how tall he was. I also remember the Goldberg vs. Scott Steiner match very well. Was crazy fun and an amazing memory.
Met Booker T at a signing and yeah, he’s still a stout dude. He isn’t giant tall, maybe 6’2”-6’3”, but he’s built like a wall. Looks like he could carry small cars on his shoulders.
That’s a cool story! It’s gotta be fun to literally relive a moment like that while watching the series.
@@zlinedaviddamn, never knew he was this tall!
@@zlinedavid I met Booker T at a Cracker Barrel in Louisiana 96 or 97. I looked through the window from inside and saw this man with tiny waist and huge shoulders and knew who it was instantly!! Introduced myself and told him I knew him from Harlem Heat. He shook my head and was nice. Always remember that moment.
Weekly nostalgia trip. Gotta love it.
I’m 5 mins in and those 4 chin locks from Bam Bam immediately give this point to Nitro this week, no need to see what else happens
Whoever’s behind your T-Shirt designs deserves a medal! I genuinely LOL’d at the new Wiggles Tees 😂
Wiggle wiggle
Sad how Big Show went from huge deal to jobbing clean to Austin within a few weeks.
That’s Tony Khan style Booking right there
I was always disappointed with how he was handled. Yeah, he was a giant, but he was also just as agile as a lot of smaller dudes! They really should have capitalized on that. He could have been so much better than he ever was.
Hello fellow gents reliving the glory days of Monday Nights, N64, PS1, and late night Hot Pockets.
Whenever a new episode of reliving the war drops, my Thursday is made.
I've been in bed sick as hell the last few days but here comes RTW to give me something to enjoy while I'm miserable. Thank you so much 🙌
Hope you feel better🙏🙏🙏🙏
Get well soon
“I probably would have given it to Nitro this week had they not cut away from matches and put so much focus on skits and promos away from the ring.”
This problem certainly will not get significantly worse in the remainder for the year.
I swear this show gets me through Fridays at work here in Australia
Raw and nitro for me used to be truly appointment TV. without fail every week id be there to watch it. Reliving the War is that new appointment show watching
Looks like they're teasing some sort of Greater Power over on RAW. Can't wait to find out who it is!!!
The Hower Power
@@mafiaz187I'm genuinely waiting for that promo to come up
Been the best part of Thursday for the last 3 years 💥
This is where things get interesting for me... back at this point in it's history, I had all but completely stopped tuning in to WCW programming. I would only occasionally tune in to try and keep up with what Bret Hart was doing... But when I did, I almost always left disappointed. Though I do regret missing out on his matches with Booker T... which brings me to my next point.
This is the first time I've seen probably 95% of this era of WCW... I had nearly ZERO interest in what they were doing at that point... and I honestly doubt I would be interested in seeing any of it even NOW without Ryan's insight, commentary, comedic timing, and nearly encyclopedic knowledge of wrestling lore and history being included.
Fuckin' nailed it as usual, Mr.Bios!
Once the Animals became a thing I was hooked again. I love K's mic work and Rey and Billy as a tag team always entertained.
Jerry Flynns new finisher does seem better than his old finisher of eating the pin
Finally, the chinlock sound effect returns!
That Rick Steiner “Steiner Line” tho 😮
Can't wait for the footage of him punching tank abbott comes out 😂
Best series on TH-cam. Love going down memory lane and you make it so fun and entertaining! ❤
You ain't lyin
6:25 "A Disco Inferno match" got me LOL!
Oh my God! That skit at 33:25 was so hilarious. Scott Hall comes out and is just so funny. I think he was portraying Piper. Also, Disco was really funny in this too.
That 4 horsemen parody was like a fever dream😂🤣😂
it was their attempt at duplicating the style of DX. but it just doesnt work when u have older guys trying to mock other old guys.
@@henry7696I'm pretty sure the NWO parodied The Horsemen way before DX ever did the Nation. Hell Syxx was still in the NWO the first time they did it. And what older guys? The only guy that was older in that skit was Hogan. Nash, Hall, and Disco were all the same age range as DX
Fun Fact: This episode of Monday Night War and Nitro aired on my 14th birthday. I'm 38 now. Oh, how time flies.
I remember that crappy foreshadowing of rock and paul white fighting and they'd make up one week....scowl at each other the next. Only been in the company a week and they've run out of ideas for him 😂
I think the Steiner/Goldberg match in this episode shows the real failure of the Finger Poke of Doom and the stories that followed.
Nash and others have said that the plan was to have Goldberg run through the NWO to get the belt back but he spent weeks still feuding with Bam Bam and when he finally gets his hands on an NWO member it's Steiner who already has two actual stories of his own with his brother and DDP and he doesn't get to finish the match himself.
They took their biggest star she made him feel like just another guy.
@@michaelsinger4638God, it’s at least October before he finally gets anything resembling direction, and it starts as a go-nowhere US title mess with Bret, Sid, and the Outsiders. And by that time, Hogan is gone.
So the main 5 figures in the Finger Poke of Doom, 9 months later, will have collectively gained absolutely nothing.
Exactly. Everything was about the NWO.
Damn I just realized Goldberg only won the world title once and after losing to Nash at starrcade 98 I dnt think he got the belt again wtf meanwhile the same ole same ole guys (hogan, flair, nash) still winning the title
Another great video! 1999 was a very turbulent year for both WCW and the WWF. While tragedy still lies ahead, Triumph also is around the corner.
The state of both franchises can partly defined by how their nepotism pushes were made. Shane Mac was always made an annoying joke accessory to the main action. The spots were always about how much of a weasel he was and how much he didn’t belong there.
I think David Flair was introduced January 4th and he’s already the centerpiece of all ongoing storylines, even though this would never be happening aside from his last name.
I think David Flair being in the NWO we can save at the end of the year is dead here is the NWO
Damn….that’s a really good observation. Hell I was watching all this as it aired and didn’t make that connection. And it fits. Shane was a great athletic chickenshit heel, and the Mean Street Posse were a bunch of bumbling oafs. Meanwhile David and Crowbar were unhinged brawlers.
Nepotism??? 😮Never 😂😂😂😂
@@zlinedavid unhinged brawlers 😂😂😂
At least Shane would put in work and have amazing matches with crazy bumps. David though.....not so much lol.
It astonishes me that Blackman NEVER got the ic or european strap. I can understand him getting the hard-core title though.
The good ol’ days. I died when Big Show picked up Vince lol
WCW deciding to make David Flair the centerpiece of a main event storyline is all the reason you need to know why they lost this war.
No
As the series goes along it shocks me how often WCW wasted having a one hour advantage over Raw
Ahhhh the weekend officially begins when this drops. Best retro wrestling channel anywhere
30:45 The ring ropes applying a chinlock too.
next level chinlockery
A BAMMER CHINLOCK?! YES! Great to see it again 👍
I can’t get enough of this channel
I can't be the only person who forgot that Public Enemy was in the WWF in 1999
I found out about this channel and the series in spring and I binged watched everything to this episode.
What a ride it has been!
WrestlingBios definitely got the jam.
When Reliving The War becomes part of your daily routine for a min now that’s how you know you’re a GOAT🔥🔥
Riki Rachtman's hair and clothing is the late 90s-early 2000s personified. That's what we looked like as teens back then - listening to nu metal, playing PS2, and watching wrestling.
What’s your signature? - A chin-lock.
What’s your finisher? - Three chin-locks.
This was the first WCW Nitro I watched. The first wrestling show I watched. I've made it to my start of the Monday Night Wars! (Did not take long before I switched to Raw)
The Wiggles merch is like Pringles 😂😂😂
I was at the Nitro event this night, was waiting for this one to come out!
I love your channel your literally bringing my childhood back
Heres where we see Raw skyrocket ahead in the ratings and score. Rey vs. Nash was def the highlight for me! Thanks Wrestling Bios!
Im glad i found this channel so many memories from this time
Dang, it’s official! With this video I’m completely caught up on reliving the War, can’t wait to get excited for the weekly uploads now 😚👌🏻
I did the same thing about a month ago. Went and signed up on Pateon to get them early, but I like the TH-cam format batter, so I watched one early, and then waited two weeks so I watch them on YT as they come out, lol.
Bret looks so badass walking to the ring in the intro.
Rey beating Big Kev is probably my further remembrance of any wrestling. 10 years old me loved it. Thank you for this series, been following every week for more than a year now, probably the only thing wrestling related I still watch. Much love and respect mate !
Love catching up to these. Seriously the best series on the internet. Thank you so much for your hard work!
Awesome when I get to watch a new episode at the start of my lunch break!
Listen to that POP for Goldberg vs. Steiner! Way better than anything today.
Haven't missed an episode since day 1 💥
Interrupting a match with two LEGENDS in Bret and Booker is unforgivable 😮
When The Giant premiered for WWF PPV my friend in the room called it by saying "cue The Giant".
Kevin Nash looks so cooked during this time period.
I think X-Pac may be underestimating Shane McMahon, honestly. I mean, he grew up on the tough, harsh streets of Greenwich, CT, after all. I imagine Shane has some friends he can call upon, is all I'm saying.
A posse, even....
Havent missed an episode! I'm on vacation in Vegas and I am still watching it!
The Rock Big Show match would have been a WCW main event though.
Once again, It’s great to see all you Jam Up Guys (and Gals) and ANIMALS!!!!
An animal, AN ANIMAL
M ur biggest fan wrestling bios!!! Keep growing❤
Man these episodes bring back good memories of the good ol’ days! 👏🏽 And your Steve Blackmon move Set commentary is Gold 😂 appreciate the episodes every Thursday 🙌🏽
That Hogan bit about Ric Flair hits different after Darkside of the Ring 😂
What a fantastic channel and series btw
David Flair: I'm loyal to my father.
NWO: We'll let you make out with Tori.
David Flair: Gimme dat cattle prod.
This show has ended up getting my wife into wrestling. We've now been watching the actual shows from about when the ministry started. I still click on your videos even though I'm quite far ahead now. You deserve the clicks!
It’s Thursday! You know what that means. 😁
I don't remember if anything came of the July 11th thing on WCW(even more reason to watch every Reliving The War lol) but I do know Bash At The Beach 99 was on July 11th so who knows? Keep up the great wrestling content Wrestling Bios, you are the #1 jam up guy!!
Blackman and Smiley focus is fantastic.
I've been waiting for another chin lock master to come along ❤❤❤❤
Clicked on Monday morning after kinda watching last week. Video stared at bam vans chin lock 3 so dope
The Giant's hands are huge.
Return of the chinlock!!! Thank god, I was having withdrawal
good treat before sleeping for midnights
WE LOVE THURSDAYS!!!
Can't believe Norman Smiley didn't feature 😢
I can't believe this channel has such young fans as this weeks Jam Up winners. It's really good to see. I watch a lot of older wrestling PPV's with my young nephews, i don't think they have watched any wrestling that isn't 20 years old..lol
The highlight of every Thursday; Reliving the War.
RICKYYYYYY i forgot about him doing that with WCW!
Bam Bam applying them Chinlocks the same way I applied Crossfaces in Smackdown vs Raw
