  • Clarification: I said the FF series used ATB for years until FFXV went Real time. That is only partially true. There were some games in between FFIV and FFXV that used other battle systems.
    Today I wanted to talk about an IGN 2003 Best games of All Time List

    3:10 the term Metroidvania didn't catch on until later in the latter half of the 2000s/early 2010s. Back then they specifically referred to the Castlevania games that took after Metroid, thus Metroidvania. It was only after that that people used it to describe all Metroid-like Exploratory Action-Platformers, and only really in english-speaking circles. In Japan they call them Tansaku Action, 探索アクション, meaning Explore/Search Action.

    Even in 2002, putting FF4 over FF6, and especially putting Super Mario Kart over 64 was an unpopular pick. Mario kart 64 overshadowed Super to the point that no one even talked about it, and some didn't know it existed. 64 became the staple at parties and hangouts. You'll find 64 on most lists from the time, but no one was playing Super Mario Kart in 2002, trust me.

    11:28 I love the first Zelda precisely because there's no handholding. I fucking hate the handholding NPCs. They feel like babysitters. I love how in the first Zelda it really feels like you're going on an adventure on your own into the unknown. It heightens the excitement not knowing what you'll find as you explore.
    I definitely got stuck and wouldn't have figured out the entrance to dungeon 7 or how to kill Gannon on my own without a FAQ, but I'm ok with that trade-off.
    Also Miyamoto intended for kids to trade discoveries as they played, in place of having a guide built into the game. It's nice to have that variety in the series at the very least.
    I personally thought A Link to The Past was too tedious and too long. I liked Link's Awakening DX much more since it was quirky, short and sweet.

    Oh wow, this list takes me back. I remember reading this list in high school back in...I want to say 2004 was when I finally got around to reading it. Definitely before 2005. Some of these are just "yeah, that makes sense." GTA3 was a phenomenon along with Street Fighter 2. Gta3 was so controversial, with Jack Thompson insisting on it being banned to protect children. Now, GTA went through the same thing Simpsons and South Park did. Controversial to just being seen as regular. Yeah, I remember when Simpsons was controversial, with Bart Simpson in particular, with his adversarial rebel nature to authority. 90s-2000s was a different time.

    What a fun video!! As a big and long time final fantasy fan I can tell you that the author of this list is very likely a Gen Xr. See, I clearly remember the discourse around final fantasy in the early 2000s. For one, there was a minor split between those who considered FF4 or FF6 the greatest in the franchise with in my view being those who loved FF4 where Gen x and those who loved FF6 were millennials. Then there was an even greater divide between those who thought FF7 was either the greatest FF game if not the greatest video game ever made and a portion of the FF fandom who loathed it. That portion has died down. similar to the backlash against the Sam reimi spider-man films, the Star Wars prequels, etc. It seems that with time these things have a way of being forgotten. But it doesn’t surprise me that someone who considers FF4 the best FF also didn’t like FF7 enough to include it on a top 100 list.

    It was a very popular opinion that Ms. Pac-Man is better than the original by far. Ms. Pac-Man arcade machines stuck around even longer than Pac-Man ones did in the 2000's. It's influencial in terms of having a playable female protagonist, which doubled as being much more appealing and welcoming to girls to play. If not for her being stuck in legal limbo, Namco would be shoving it down our throats instead of trying to pretend she doesn't exist.

  • @bartsimpson83
    @bartsimpson83 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Something we kinda missed here in the states (due to the NES being released almost three years after the Famicom) is that Super Mario Bros was meant to be seen as the ultimate cartridge game, the limit of what stock hardware could do. It was also intended as Nintendo's send-off to the Famicom before releasing the Famicom Disk System and developing further games there. Shortly after the Disk System's release, game devs figured out how to extend the Famicom's capabilities via mapper chips so it ended up having more life in it after all. In that context, the selection of SMB as number one makes even more sense. It was more influential than we knew at the time.

  • @shsrpr
    @shsrpr หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I think this list isn't saying these games are specifically the best, but rather the most influential and groundbreaking. That's why games like Mario Kart are on there. Mario Kart 1 isn't the best kart racing game ever made, but it was pretty damn influential. Goldeneye proved that you could do a FPS on a console, even if as of 2003 there had been way better console FPS's released since it came out. And, THPS3/4/U are all arguably better than THPS2 (I personally like 2 best tho), but THPS2 was way more ground shattering than any of the ones that followed it.

Seeing Halo, Half Life 1, and Half Life CS in the lower tears was sad to see. Those games have evolved and still exist today. Golden eye was fun, but there's a reason why fps games moved twords Halo arcady feel and CS pc master race stuff. Also Metroid Prime was so close to getting in there. I think metorid prime is a whole lot more replayable than SNES mario kart

    Pac-Man was seen as too shallow and limited to still be really enjoyable.
    It's like how you'd compare GTA 3 and Vice City today. Sure, GTA 3 was an industry changing event, but it's not why it stays in the public consciousness.

      Pac Man is still pretty fun today it's surprising how addicting it is for a game that is about to be 45 years old

      @@Smarties. It's reputation has improved dramatically since then. That Google logo helped. So has mainstream awareness of the ghost personalities and movement.
      Plus some great sequels.
      And Namco losing the rights to Ms. Pac-Man.

    These lists have always proven unreliable, as were a lot of reviews, going back as far as 90's magazines. This is mostly brand and mascotte galore. The big magazine of the 1990's, called EGM, did the same. Games of the year suddenly were near the bottom of a top 100 list they made just a few years later. Nothing against Nintendo and Sony, but these lists represent more sales numbers and fandom than real impact and originality. If it's only the best games from before 2003, yeah most of the really old games don't stand a chance for most people, even though their impact was great. Take story telling in video games, something that existed since students started to make their own games at universities in the 1970's. That story telling is presented in this list as something that was almost never done before. I mean, graphic adventures were doing fine in the late 80's and early 90's, and relied mostly on story telling.
    Too many great games and representatioins of other missing genres, are missing. Not a good list overall, but has some great ones in there.
    (edit: i'm talking about the games in the video, i haven't seen the complete list)

    Personally I don't really like to take into account a game's influence when making a tier list. A game may be influential, but it doesn't mean it holds up well. For example, GTA 3's influence is undeniable, but I don't think it's one of the best games to play nowadays. Even at the time of that list, I think Vice City already surpassed 3, it was definitely the better experience. Even GoldenEye was definitely surpassed by Halo as the better console FPS experience, a game that is still perfectly playable even now, unlike GoldenEye.

    Ocarina of Time was one of the games that taught me never to be hyped for games or else you will be disappointed, it took me two years to beat that game since I found it to be THAT boring. Zelda in general is but OoT just specfically bores the crap out of me.

    Ocarina of Time was absolutely worshipped back then. It was considered an untouchable 10/10 sacred cow nothing else could possibly live up to. Time has reduced it to an 8/10 imo.
