"Were you guys even alive when the Dreamcast was still being made?"
My 31 year old self: "Um...yes? 😢"
Yeah this is kinda hilarious
My 35 year old self has such fond memories of the 90s and 2000s. Sadly adulthood is when I have more bad memories.
I'm 27. Old by TH-cam audience standards but damn not old enough to be called out like this
The Zoomers have taken over TH-cam tbh
Ultima requiring the player to read the instruction manual and included book was likely a form of DRM. it was extremely common back then as piracy was rampant
Don't copy that floppy !
No Resident Evil wtf
Both RE games aren’t in the top 30 of the ps1
@@MadPaperMarioThere are 3 games on the PS1.
I don't think a single one of them would make it even now, to be honest
@@williamhardee8863 Re3 wasnt gonna make this list lets be real
@@MadPaperMarioI don't know about that. Nemesis was incredibly unique for its time and the only game that I can think had a stalker before that was Clock Tower and Re3 is definitely better than clocktower.
11:54 In Europe PC gaming was BIG at that time.
And it's super sad a lot of comments saying the list sucks because of that, I imagine they're all people that would made a list entirely with with Nintendo and PS1 stuff.
Here’s a video idea about April fools jokes in games like Minecraft or the murder of sonic the hedgehog
The controls in tomb raider are actually really good and satisfying. But I totally understand why you'd think they're bad. Like the shooting mechanics in stalker and level scaling in dark souls, its just not explained to the player that well. Once you learn how the controls work though the game becomes so much more fun.
This list definitely prioritized computer games than console gaming I mean no FF7, Super Mario 64, Super Mario 3, Resident evil or Legend of Zelda
That's how British people were before the 2000s. Home computers like the Amiga were the main way to play games
The Legend of Zelda is in the "Top-5."
The problem with other lists is that most of them (for the new millennium) will just list Platformers, RPGs only released in the west, and Adventure games. They barely mention any beat em ups, shmups, run and guns or puzzle games.
Yeah, this is like 80% retro PC games. You can tell it was a list made by eidos devs and not the public
This list being UK based makes the choice make so much sense. The PC gaming scene was WAY more prevalent of there than here in the US.
Captain Claw (1997) is among the best 2D platformers, imo. You play as a pirate cat too. 😸
And it was made by Monolith who would make FEAR, Blood and the Middle Earth War games.
@@NealMohansMicroPenis ❤️
I highly suggest you try command and conquer again, it was remastered a few years back and it holds up. I spent many hours playing as a kid and again as an adult with the remaster.
Personally I think if you want to get into the series the best option is Red Alert 2. It's just campy and tons of fun. Even friends that didn't like RTS games loved it.
@@NealMohansMicroPenis dude for sure!
Red Alert on top
The start of a new millennium
Thanks for another blast to the past! Born in 90, so a lot of these stood out for me.
I'd say that putting a lot of entries in the same spot (if from the same series) is a good move, since then it allows for more variety in the amount of series represented, but also it makes sure people don't get the wrong idea if it was limited per series/franchise (e.g. "why is this game not here?" when it would be decently high if not removed to allow for more variety to be put in).
I enjoyed playing Red Alert a lot back in the 90s, but honestly Starcraft is a far better RTS than any of the Command & Conquer games of the time. There are some standards in the RTS genre that started with Starcraft such as "Attack Move" so your forces attack every enemy on the way to the area you told them to go to instead of having to individually click each enemy unit. Starcraft is also the most balanced RTS ever made and has aged really well. It came out in 1998 so if they're going to include the classic Command & Conquer games of the time, Starcraft should be considered better even back then.
I'm old enough that, yes, I remember the Dreamcast. I even had one at my dad's house. It was ahead of the pack in so many ways, like prioritizing internet connectivity and being able to output to VGA (which made the system look incredibly sharp.) Definitely an underrated console and I enjoyed what little time I had with it.
People complain when a game doesn't run at 60fps today but back in the day 24fps was like the standard. You got a game that runs at 60 and it was like 120fps today.
Edit : This list is questionable.
If you want to get into Command and Conqueror I would highly recommend Red Alert 2. It's campy, it's faster paced (then the first few games) and just all around fun.
Tiberian Sun/Firestorm all day!
I was alive when the Dreamcast came out, but I was barely conscious.
Ultima 9 is still on my pc. I remember if you retreated the game they sent you a new cd with all the patches on it. From lord British himself. One guy took huge responsibility for errors that slipped out in the release.
Apparently Ultima 7 is the other great Ultima game. Ultima 3 is important game in the series and was the template of RPGs along with Wizardry 1.
And about Ocarina of Time having the best graphics, it was arguably the best graphics of that generation.
Very nice
Very interesting to see how views on gaming has changed since then. You would NEVER see a flight simulator in a best games list today lmao.
I'm kinda surprised that there were no Master System games considering that this was made by a PAL region magazine.
I’m from the UK and old enough to have bought a Dreamcast at launch but find this list a bit strange. Never even heard of the cricket game!
I miss Civilization 2. One of my favorite RTS games as a kid.
The year I was born!!
Can't believe we peaked as a civilization 24 years ago
I fucking love that cricket game mate
Ultima IV's title screen DOES say "Press I to Start A New Game". You can see this at 8:00
I edited that text in to make my point, didn’t realize it was that convincing!
@@kirotalksyt Well done! I was convinced!
Where is Sonic 3 and Knuckles?
1:05
Imo, don’t worry about franchise repeats.
I get you might want variety, but it makes your list automatically inaccurate if you remove them.
Dont let the guy who made this list cook again
Ocarina of time IS graphically unmatched
Honestly, I kinda agree. That game has such a beautiful & unique art style, and I wasn't even born when it came out.
Let's say my childhood wasn't about Nintendo and had no affiliation with platformers nor mascots, what would a list like that could look like ?
No Alpha Centauri?
2000
No daggerfall 😢
Why do people put Mario World above Mario 3? the controls are more slippery in Mario World.
No Chrono Trigger or FF7 is kinda wild
Chrono Trigger was not released in the UK. Also there’s more to RPGs than just Sakaguchi. I mean you also have Dragon Quest III and V which are also some of the best RPGs as well
No Crash Bandicoot or Mortal Kombat?
I don't get the love for crash. And that was my era.
@@GoFidoGowell you're one of the many ones. I wish Crash was PlayStation's IP just like Sly, Jak and Ratchet.
@@GoFidoGoI mean we all like different things. Personally I loved crash. At the time it was unique and it went a totally different direction as a 3D platformer than Super Mario 64.
Crash was memorable. The music was good. The graphics were pretty great. It was fast paced and switched things up between levels and it had fun boss fights. Personally I enjoyed it's more linear gameplay.
@@GoFidoGo me neither. I've received a ton of shit one time for saying crash bandicoot 1 wasn't good and didn't age well
I played Virtua Fighter 2,2.5 & 5 in Judgement (a Yakuza spin-off) and it was one of the worst games I’ve ever played.
Elite is still more complete than starfield
Does the Arcade Mode of Gran Turismo have any Career Mode? I like arcade racers, GT seems interesting, but Simulation bores me to death. GT7 really almost put me to sleep on a short time. It's more boring than FIFA...
Why no SotN?
Probably because it wasn't 3d, so gamers at the time didn't give it the appreciation it deserved.
SOTN was not very well known in 2000 I think although I could be wrong
so many comments in this video make me feel so fucking old lmfao
wheres ff7 on the thumbnail???
Yooo
“Best games of the 20th century”
How about best games of the second millennium :0
Wow. Lol
Fifa is better than MGS ??
Br9 wheres fortnite
Dreadful list and having FIFA over ISS 🤣🤣 FIFA was a licence and nothing more the game was dog shit and ISS was light years ahead in every way
A 2000 list ignoring Mario 64, super Mario kart, resident evil, GoldenEye, final fantasy. Wipeout 2097... And so on
I mean they couldn't play Final Fantasy, and Super Mario Kart sucks. The games they are actually missing are Castlevania, Wizardry, Mega Man, Super Mario Bros. 3, the Phantasy Star series, Final Fight, Gradius, Adventure and Space Invaders.
Most of these don't hold up.
Deal with it 😎
Who are you even talking to ? Nobody is talking about these games holding up.
Let me guess you're the type that also complains about AAA games then also calls indie games trash and then considers old games not holding up ?
@@NealMohansMicroPenis i was taking to the thousands of people who use Nostalgia as a reason for a game being good, ignoring major flaws in a game because it's "sO nOsTaLgIc" and ignoring all criticism because "iT's My ChIlDhOoD" and i enjoy plenty of indie games thanks. Just not the ones who use their graphical art style as an excuse for sh*ty game design because "ThAt'S hOw ThE ClAsSiCs DiD IT"
@@ultimate_pleb I ultimately agree with you and your original comment (a lot of these don't hold up) but feel your comment just came off kind of prickish when nobody was even talking about the games holding up. Sorry. Though yeah, I do see a comment in the comment section basically being what you are replying to.
Just seems this day so many gamers just want to hate everything. Or like you said hate anything new and revere anything old. Nostalgia blinds people.
@@NealMohansMicroPenis wow someone who can actually respect other people's opinions on the Internet!
"A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one"
i never thought I'd see the day and yet here we are.
I feel absolutely nothing.
@@ultimate_pleb You've played all of these games? That's insane, although I find that most indie platformers pale in comparison to their inspirations
Lol @ this zoomer going "nah, can't stomach this! :S" at every other game.
Also imagine getting filtered by the tank controls; both RE and TR1-3 still play great to this day, and provide an unique, tactile adventure gameplay that the floaty, handholdy modern SHOOTER spinoffs/remakes can't hope to capture.
go back to your retirement home, grandpa
you will never be japanese
HORRIBLE!
I’m only on 15 so far and I’m like who tf is making this dog poop list… ok I finished now and I have to say this is probably the most laughable list of all time
what a trash list, no surprise it's coming from the UK lmao
To be fair this was in 2000, a lot of games that defined the landscape were still pretty fresh and their legacy wasn't cemented yet. Plus the UK enjoyed PC gaming more than the US at this time.
