I started learning italian 2 weeks ago. I have a passion and I'm driven to learn it. Italian is such a beautiful language and a part of my culture. My deceased mother was Italian but she didn't speak italian but she was italian in personality. My father was native american and I was raised mostly as native but I carried italian traits and personality that was like my mother and italian different from my native side. Now I'm learning italian. I feel my deceased italian mother would be proud of me. Writing is such a passion for me and I'm learning italian by writing in it and reading my work and italian language materials. I started my own book in English now I'm going to rewrite the first couple of pages from English to italian. Ironic my book is a native american drama, action love story and I'll have it finished in italian someday. Native people like your weird your crazy. I do everything from my heart. Thanks for this video. I've herd of this amazing special lady and she's a big inspiration to me. If she can do it I can do it.

      Buona fortuna. Ogni lingua è unica e l'italiano è...
      Semplicemente l'italiano, probabilmente

She not learned italian, made a very different and complex (definitely much more fascinating) journey; she has totally immersed herself in the language and culture of the country, with a desire and a passion hard to find in others people.
I have never heard any native eng speaker (and not just eng) have this command of italian.
I'm sorry for my "google-eng" (unfortunately for me, I'm not like her).

The book is marvelous -- a thoughtful treatise on the freedoms and limitations inherent in writing in a second language, and the joy and poignancy of falling in love with a culture that is not one's own. But I feel that Ann Goldstein's English translation subverts the tone, rhythms, and flow of Lahiri's original Italian text.

Bellissimo libro! Grazie per aver scelto l'italiano. O grazie all'italiano per aver scelto te! ;) Siamo fortunati ad avere e parlare una lingua che per Thomas Man è quella degli angeli. Trattiamola bene!

How remarkable! I happened upon this author while reading an article about a lady translator, Ann Goldstein, who has translated for both Mrs. Nahiri and for Elena Ferrante. It has just mushroomed from there. Now I have so many books to read in the future. For Mrs. Nahiri to go to live in Italy, learn Italian, write a book in that language, and let another person translate it into English is incredible. The very best to all of you.

where can I buy your books? I am presently working here in Brescia, Italy. I really am in great difficulty to learn the Italian language. I really needed an inspiration to boost my zest to never stop hoping that I will improve especially when it comes to speaking. Sono qui in Italia da due anni. I feel limited and not so spontaneous when it comes to speaking. Please let me know where to buy in cash her books with audio. Grazie a voi.

      Ciao S. Monica Monica.
Parto con il dire che il tuo italiano è ottimo, e non devi sentirti affranta se non riesci ad esser spontanea con questa nuova lingua. Solo il tempo ti potrà aiutare.
Detto questo, se vuoi trovare il suo audiolibro di "In altre parole" nelle librerie in Italia ti sarà un po' impossibile.
      Tuttavia puoi fare due cose:
      1) ordinarlo da Amazon.com
      o
      2) chiedere, in una libreria, se è possibile ordinare questo audiobook.

As Italian, I admire her also from other videos and interviews. I am surprised how much some foreigners want to learn my mother tongue (and I learned few other foreign languages), but anyway, I am surprised how much Italians are destroying Italian. There is a replacement of italian words with english ones, often changing the meaning of the original english word, and FORGETTING the italian word that was used just one day before. This maybe is happening also in other languages, but maybe in Italian more than others. This process should be stopped, reversed or at least reduced somehow, else it will destroy all the languages.

This sounds very self-conscious and pretentious. People pick up new languages as adults all the time. Not a big deal at all.
This female cannot read or write Bengali which is technically her mother-tongue - her parents are of Indian-Bengali extraction.
