I'm sure the beauty skin products on store shelves are much more tainted than skin cream made from tallow that has come from grass fed, grain finished beef. Not everyone has access or can afford grass fed but still a better choice than skin cream full of chemicals from store shelves.
Has anyone on the “grass fed grass finish” train considered the fact that pastures and any type of planted grass (for colder months) has to be fertilized and chemically sprayed with a herbicide to prevent weeds from taking over? And fertilize is made by extracting raw materials (potassium and phosphorus) and chemically mixed with nitrogen turned into a powder then compressed into a granular form. As a prime angus beef producer, there is absolutely nothing wrong with supplementing beef with grain. As far as grass fed having more Omega 3’s, that would be a fact. But it’s STILL only a fraction of what your body needs per day. So you still are required to get your fatty acids from another source. Here’s another tidbit of info, grass fed cattle must walk and walk….and walk and walk to consume their 3% of food per day. It takes so much longer for that steer (or heifer) to get up to proper weight for any processor. (Usually around 1,300-1,400lbs) our steers reach processing weight in 16 months and are MUCH more tender, plus grade prime. The flavor is better and you can even cut the sirloins with a fork. If you ask a meat cutter or butcher what a better beef is, they will tell you grain. If you ask a social media influencer, they will tell you grass fed. The choice is yours to make. But that’s why Prime beef is much more expensive than choice or select.
I recently found a good supplier of grass fed grass finished beef and I feel much better eating it vs the grass fed grain finished I was buying my whole life and recently from a local butcher. Cows are ruminants and are meant to eat grass, not grains on a feed lot. Also live a better life out on pasture - only bad time for them is when they get taken out to slaughter. You could be right about tenderness and size and marbling but grass fed grass finished is better for you all around, and it’s the way the Almighty planned it. God willing I am never going back to grain finished beef and the indigestion that comes along with it. No downside to grass finished in my opinion.
I appreciate the tip about using essential oils for your face! I bought so many essential oils to put in my whipped tallow but decided to watch one more random video on youtube and yours saved me, haha!
Great recipe. I love this! Just made it with 1 tbsp of grape seed oil and 1 tbsp of jojoba oil. As well as frankincense oil, lavender oil and sweet orange oil 😍
I am making this right now! I used cocnut oil and it smells great. No Tallow smell. I think it matters what tallow you use. I found a good one on Amazon.😊
I have so much rendered tallow jarred up. So easy to render in a crockpot or even an IP. I am lucky enough to still have a real butcher counter at one of our local grocers. If I give them a week, they will save the beef fat (or pig fat for lard) and I get it for about $2/pound. I just tell them how much I want. It renders down beautifully. So glad to see this video, had no clue I could do this. Does it need to be refrigerated after making or is it shelf stable?
I was curious about this too, my guess is that you have to melt down the tallow so it can combine with the olive oil and then you have to let it cool or else it won't whip.
Hi, Abbey... Thanks for sharing this tallow balm recipe. I have combination skin. So I made this recipe with combination oils n split it into two. In the first half, I add arrowroot powder n I find it less oily n setter on my skin during the day. While in the other half I just leave it as it is n use it at night. Both of them give me automatically glowing skin!!! Oh there is a fun fact about it, someone smells me using the tallow like a meat ball. Yummy isn't it?🤣🤣🤣 I consider it as a compliment 😁
Can you tell us how to store it? Should it be refrigerated and does it have a “shelf life”, where it might go bad after a certain amount of time? Thank you!
Wonderful idea - thank you! I just so happen to have home-rendered tallow. I think I'll give this a try and maybe add lavender and frankinsence for something relaxing before bed.
@@abbeyverigin I made this yesterday. It is so nice! I ended up using some st. john's wort-cayenne infused oil that I made some time ago and some EO so I can rub it on my husband's back. It is so smooth and your skin feels so nice. I told him - hey, let me run this cow fat on you. haha He likes it.

Mya I ask, how are you storing this. Is it shelf stable with no refrigeration or is refrigeration needed, and what is the shelf life in the various ways to store it? Thank you in advance.
Tallow is usually shelf stable at least 6-12 months. I have whipped tallow from over a year ago that I keep in a cool cabinet and it is still totally fine :) I usually store my tallow in the fridge just to extend its life
Can food extracts be used? Since itll be dor skin care. Im gessing since its food grade, it should be safe to use as a scent?🤔 Also, can the whipped tallow, than be stored in fridge? Or will it affect its texture. How long does it last? Once whipped?
I love your video. I tried making it with 1 cup tallow and 1/4 c avocado oil ( someone else’s recipe). I mixed it for 10 minutes and it did not whip up so I put it in the fridge to firm it up. After put it in my jar and left on the counter, it softened to a runny texture. Is it supposed to stay refrigerated? Hope you can help. Thank you
Warmer temperatures will soften the tallow when left on counter. Keep in dark cool place or yes, you can put in fridge if in house temperature is too warm. Tips I've learned along the journey of homemade ☺️
Omg yes , I would love to see your process. I do have a question: With the amount of oil, does your skin get oily ? I have used oils on my skin, but not every day. And do you use it on just your face or as a body lotion as well ? I laughed when you said you rubbed meat on your skin 😂. But, you look like you have beautiful skin, so keep doing it 😍. God bless and stay safe 🙏 ❤️
Haha thank you! I don’t find it gets oily, it absorbs very well. You could leave out the olive oil you just won’t get quite as fluffy as a texture which is no big deal. I use it for everything! Face, body, cuts/scrapes. I also often use it to remove my makeup like you would an oil cleanser. It works great and my skin is happiest when I use this!
I haven’t tried this but would be curious to. Beeswax really helps to lock in moisture I find. The end result would be more firm. I will have to try that some time, let me know if you do!

Is adding 2 tablespoons of castor oil a good idea or not? Anxiously waiting for ur kind reply.
Hello, I would do less sweet almond oil and replace some of it with castor oil. You just want 1 cup of tallow to 1/4 cup of whatever liquid oil you prefer
Hello there ...I did a mixture of tallow, olive oil, and jasmine essential oil. A couple hours later my face started feeling tingly and mild burning sensation and also mild redness on my cheeks. What do you think that's happening? Too much olive oil? Thanks.
I just learned about tallow. Have not seen it in real life. Just started looking at Amazon products today. Does it have a scent? Does it need to be refrigerated? Does the whip need to be refrigerated? Thank you for sharing your instructions!
I don’t find it usually has a scent. I think if you render it at home not long enough it can. It is shelf stable. The whip does not need to be refrigerated but to try to keep it somewhere cool so it doesn’t melt/separate.
hi Abbey, in your demo what tallow did you use? I looked at the tallow in the link that you gave to amazon and there were a lot of complaints in the reviews that it was brown and smelled strongly of beef. In your demo, your tallow looked nice and whitish.
I've been rendering beef fat for tallow. It needs to be melted with water and salt then strained several times. The water and salt help to remove the beef smell and when strained with a double cheese cloth in a strainer it removes the impurities from the fat. You are left with very little smell and adding a touch of essential oils helps as well. Hope this helps ☺️
I made your recipe about a month ago, it is amazing! I has started to separate and I'm wondering if I did something wrong. Is it supposed to be kept in the refrigerator?
Im glad you've enjoyed it! I don't keep it in the fridge. How much is it separating? I haven't had this issue, maybe it is too warm where it has been stored?
I haven't tried it. Vitamin E oil is quite a bit heavier than olive oil so you might want to do a mix of the two. It should work if anything the texture might be a little heavier
Hello! I’m glad it was helpful. I’m sure you could but I feel like it would potentially be more beef-y smelling since it cooked with the bones vs just the fat rendering if that makes sense
Absolutely, purify first with water and salt to cleanse of beefy odour. There will still be a light odour, but is dissipates shortly after being rubbed in the skin.
Just curious if you can add zinc oxide to this recipe for a sun screen type product, I understand the claims for protection, I'm just curious if you have ever tried incorporating that? Thank you for sharing this recipe
I can’t get it to a whipped texture. I used 1 cup tallow, 4 TBS olive oil and 2tsp rose hip oil. Texture is like a lotion. Any suggestions? What ratios should I use for tallow and oils?
Hi I made this recipe. Thank you! But I found after the lotion sat in my bathroom for awhile, bits hardened up. Did I do something wrong or this typical? I does melt when I put it on my palm. But I would like it if it stayed creamy
I’m sorry to hear that. I have some that’s a year old and still fresh. I wonder if there was any moisture in the container it was stored in? Or if it was stored in a warm place?
Hi Donna! Tallow is shelf stable so this does not need to be refrigerated. It should last a year however I always go through it much faster than that :)
I'm looking into this for by daughter who has really bad skin problems. And I read that emu oil rebuilds the skin, is that something I could add to this ?
Yes I’m sure! I haven’t tried adding emu oil to the tallow balm but I’m sure it would work great. I have used it alone as a face moisturizer in the winter or when I deal with eczema occasionally. It works wonders
Abbey how are you eliminating the beefy smell? Is the essential oil just covering up that smell or is there a process to get ride of the natural animal scent
Hi Liza. I haven’t found my tallow to smell beefy, I understand rendering over low heat or water rendering can help eliminate it. I don’t use essential oils to cover the scent, just to add one if I want. Sometimes I don’t use them
How long does it need to be mixed on high before it gets the whipped consistency? Mine has been in the mixer a long time and I'm starting to worry I did something wrong 😅
It shouldn't take too long, maybe a few minutes. You could try freezing it again before mixing. It may have to do with the heat if it's warm where you live. Sorry for the late reply!
@abbeyverigin no worries!! I'll probably freeze and try again, it separated a lot in the container I put it in. I think I have to keep it in the fridge!!
@@abbeyverigin thank you for your reply! I actually warmed it all back up to liquid and made sure there was not water left because I used the wet method for rendering. It is definitely better and made good lotion, but the tallow is still a little soft at room temperature. I did not use grassfed or suet so I might try one of those just to see if there's a difference.

I’m sorry to hear that. I have some that’s a year old and still fresh. I wonder if there was any moisture in the container it was stored in? Or if it was stored in a warm place?
@@abbeyveriginshould I refrigerate it? I live in Western North Carolina and it does get fairly hot during the summer.
How long does this store for and does it have to be refrigerated ?
I have same question.
Do I need to refrigerate this so that it doesn't go bad? How long can I leave it out? Thank you so much. 🙂
Hi Donna! Tallow is shelf stable so this does not need to be refrigerated. It should last a year however I always go through it much faster than that :)
@@abbeyverigin Oh, thank you so much. I can't wait to make this. 🙂
CAN YOU USE A CASTER OIL WITH THE TALLOW?
Yes that would work!
IT TURNED OUT SUPER GOOD! I LOVE IT! THANKS FOR SHARING =)
Yes show more
How do you store the extras?
Would vanilla extract be ok/safe to put in this for scent?
Yes!
Is deer tallow ok?
deer etc are full of parasites, why wd u want to put that on your skin!
Can i feeze those made balms and they will keep the same Quality once defrosted?
I’m not sure the texture would hold, I haven’t tried that
@@abbeyverigin and how long does the cream hold ?
I've seen some recipes that show you have to filter it through cheese cloth once or twice. Is that part of the normal process?
no that isn't nor necessary. That also sound messy working with oils
You can if you notice any particles after using a metal strainer
Hello what are the benefits of whipping it vs just a balm
It just changes the texture, you don’t need to whip it
can you make tallow balm with the fat from bone broth as well?
love yo see more diy
Can we use coconut oil as substitute?
I don't think you'd get a similar texture
I'm looking into this for by daughter who has really bad skin problems. And I read that emu oil rebuilds the skin, is that something I could add to this ?
Yes I’m sure! I haven’t tried adding emu oil to the tallow balm but I’m sure it would work great. I have used it alone as a face moisturizer in the winter or when I deal with eczema occasionally. It works wonders
@@abbeyverigin ok. Thanks for the reply. I will defiantly look into it more and get her some made up !
Sometimes I don’t use them
What's the purpose of the olive oil? Could you just do strictly tallow?
Adding a bit of oil is what helps it become fluffy after whipping. You could use tallow only but you won't get the same texture
how does it smell?
It doesn't have a scent if the tallow you use was rendered on low heat. You can add essential oils to scent it
Is tallow balm is close to butter ghee ? Or desi ghee ?
No it isn't
Why we should mixed the tallow?
You don’t have to, if you want the fluffy texture you need to though
How long does it need to be mixed on high before it gets the whipped consistency? Mine has been in the mixer a long time and I'm starting to worry I did something wrong 😅
It shouldn't take too long, maybe a few minutes. You could try freezing it again before mixing. It may have to do with the heat if it's warm where you live. Sorry for the late reply!
@abbeyverigin no worries!! I'll probably freeze and try again, it separated a lot in the container I put it in. I think I have to keep it in the fridge!!
Have you ever tried making this with emu oil?
I haven't but I don't see why it wouldn't work! I love using emu oil for skincare, mixed with tallow sounds great.
Without beef fat what else can add tallow make
Can i ask why would you whip it?
You don't have to, sometimes I use straight up tallow as skincare. It just provides a lighter texture.
Okay great thank you 🥰
Arrow root makes it less oily. Add 1 tbsp at mixing stage
Yes this is a great tip
I made my own tallow. I cannot get it to a thick whipped texture. Its just like a runny body lotion. Any tips? I started with refrigerated tallow.
Hmm I am not sure. Did you add additional oil? Have you tried putting it back in the fridge or freezer then whipping again?
@@abbeyverigin thank you for your reply! I actually warmed it all back up to liquid and made sure there was not water left because I used the wet method for rendering. It is definitely better and made good lotion, but the tallow is still a little soft at room temperature. I did not use grassfed or suet so I might try one of those just to see if there's a difference.
