    We live in an era of online gaming where some people won't even believe you if you tell them you've never ragequitted. While getting angry at games is understandable, it's worrying to see so many players adapt to the idea (and preach) that ragequitting is totally acceptable.
    I have to admit, it's a guilty pleasure of mine when I record a RQ, but that's only because I have a capture card. I feel bad for anyone else who simply get's disconnected, and has to hope that the next guy won't quit.

      I'll admit that I've RQ'ed before a couple times in my life in either Online matches to fighting games or online fps sessions. Am I proud of it? No, but at least I admit that I did it and I'm bettering myself because of it. Usually whenever someone RQ's on me, I sometimes ask if they disconnected unintentionally due to the net-code or if they hit the home button on accident because that happened a lot when I played Naruto:UNS4. I don't really give people shit or belittle them when they RQ on me because then I'd be as big of a hypocrite as LowTierGod, the best ragequitter on Earth! Instead, I just shrug it off and move on. Maybe they had a long day at work or just have some pent up aggression, it doesn't justify the RQ but I can at least sympathize with the reason as to why.

      Its because on online fighting games such as street fighter,mortal kombat,ect nobody likes one sided matches where they have aboslutely 0 chances of winning a fight at all because the other person knows all the combos right out the gate and button mashes. so if i feel that in ANY multiplayer game that a one sided fight is full of bullshit and its a waste of time and effort to get stomped on 20 times over, im going to leave without any regrets. im not going to force myself to stay, "accept" 5 losses because of a massive skill gap, then be mocked and ridiculed for being a shitty player just because people think i suck at the game. imagine if this were a competitve leauge and you lost every single match even if you tried, people would kick you out of teams, and bar you from participating just because they think you will never "git gud" and improve ever. tldr:you will be a laughing stock as that one person who always loses regardless of who it is he/she is fighting. ragequitting doesint net you a loss on your stats, so of course people do that. Improve the matchmaking, and maybe then people wont leave mid match. its compareable to destiny/destiny 2 putting random people in pugs vs fireteams of 6 pro people with mics in skype.

    The only time a rage quit irritates me is when it is a close game, that is just disrespectful. When an opponent rage quits when the battle is one-sided, I just think its funny. Post game trolling might happen as well.
    When the match is laggy and they disconnect, then Its fine. I understand.

    There seems to be a very very small group of gamers in the world who have any idea of the concept of honor. When you are bested by your opponent in competition, it is honorable to let him take the victory that he deserves. Have some respect for your fellow competitor who's giving it his best the same as you.
    Personally I don't care for things like ranked history such as a win/loss ratio. If someone rage quits, that's a win in my book. Still, rage quitters should receive the most severe punishment a game can offer. Especially in competitive games where upholding sportsmanship and honor should be a pivotal tenant.

      Agreed. This is the first time that I've heard about the Injustice 2 ranking system, but WOW did they screw up that ranking system. Like what developer would think that rage quitting should equal a double loss? It's stupid

      +Lunar Templar rage quit lobby - priceless love it - but there is a problem with that yeah? Fighting games if you rage quit it should be progressively punishing aka first time it happens fine 1 rank lost 2nd time? 2 ranks 3rd time 6 ranks that way people will not want to rage quit to save stats. To fix your ranks if you had a bad connection you would have to appeal the rank loss by sending a pack trace to the game devs to prove you have a bad connection and are not just faking it. That might be better.... might..
      Now in other games this will not work as well but for fighting games rage quitting simply should not give the player a zero stat it should have a loss if they leave and not get any rewards of any kind.

    • @PhoenixEvansChannel
      @PhoenixEvansChannel 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Lunar Templar Other games have done this, such as dota 2. It works pretty well. So applying the same idea to street fighter or something would probably work pretty well.

    I really wish they added a forfeit button, usually the quit button is the forfeit button, but you know if they added like a forfeit animation specific to every character in a fighting game that'd be awesome. I for one still usually don't forfeit, because it's not over till your health bar reaches zero, but a forfeit button would be cool for players who want to leave but also don't want to be complete dicks and ragequit like crying babies.

    • @JotakuJo
      @JotakuJo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Headchrusherdeth You're on to something there, most sports do that so it's about time fighting games implement it even though the rules are "It don't stop until the health is zero" there comes a point in the match when you realize you're not good enough to beat the opponent and the opponent even knows this. It's an inevitable win and it's one reason I don't take electronic sports seriously.

    These rage quit losers keep appearing in my KI games. And the worst, the poorest losers are those that have just beaten you. Let me explain, often I'll be matched up a second time with the same person that beat me earlier, then once I start winning they rage quit on me to retain their ranking. Absolute bastards. Everything else I really enjoy about KI, hopefully DoubleHelix does something about this behavior.

    Great video Max, hit the nail on the head on a multitude of subjects.
    The fact that Injustice punishes rage quit victims but not the rage quitters themselves is just sad. There are so many factors that make this game great, but the online is flawed from the ground up.

  • @LadyViolet1
    @LadyViolet1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I really like the idea of a forfeit or concede button. I don't think anyone should feel trapped playing someone they don't want to. It allows them to leave while showing that their actions still have consequences, they still lose and the opponent still wins. Or sometimes the connection makes you want to eat your hands, so a loss would be preferable to slogging through it. Also shout outs to MK11 for quitalities I really like how that's handled.

    I really like when games have this disconnect percentage displayed on player cards.
    Even though disconnects do happen unintentionally by net error, but in this case if people only get those once in a while disconnects it won't affect the percentage. If somebody has a percent or more it's easy to see that wasn't just due to net errors, but to rage quitting. There's also a way to redeem this.

There would be times when I would train in a fighting game for hours each day after loosing many times and never giving up only to have a multiple wins taken away from me due to a rage quiter. As much as I hate ragequitters i understand when people quit sometimes. For instance I'm pretty damn good at UMk3. Not a lot of people can compete with me and if I run into someone who is clearly just learning they have basically no chance at winning. It's annoying waiting 20 minutes for a game then they quit right away but it happens. i don't get mad. However it bothers me when the person quits, then feels the need to send me hate mail afterwards.
    I suck at mvc2 as I'm just starting to learn it, but I dont usually ragequit, even if my opponent is teabaggin me hard. Why dont i quit? Because I want to get better! Even if I have no chance of winning I can at least begin to learn how to counter a high level player.

    Online Pokemon had a system where if you disconnected from a match, you weren't allowed to connect to another match for one hour, which I think would be a good system for fighting games. You rage quit, you can't play again for a bit. Maybe just like 5 minutes for a once in a blue moon thing so you don't punish legitimate problems like a fuse blowing or something too hard, but if it becomes a trend, you get barred from playing for progressively longer.

    • @OtakuShepherd

      What if you have shitty internet and it disconnects or something happens in real life that results in your game crashing or losing connection, it seems pretty brutal to not allow another match for another hour after one disconnect. But yeah, rules needs to be put in place for this.

Often times connection issues fix themselves over time and giving that hour keeps from someone super-bumping their own loss score. Also keeps people from boosting.Random Man

    • @sulblazer
      @sulblazer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I like the concept, but if there's no way to distinguish between a disruption in the service and a rage quitter, I think a 1 hour ban is too harsh. I think an easy solution is to set up an alert...if your opponent has had more than 5 disconnects in a rolling last week, then the system should give you an option to play against opponent or not. That way, if a player had a random DC related to their ISP, then it shouldn't impact them. If their ISP is spotty, then this will give them a chance to fix it and resume play without a penalty....if the player is rage-quitting then they'll be effectively banned by the community because the alert will pop up and most players in ranked won't want to risk playing against a rage-quitter. The alert will stay in place until they have less than 5 DCs in a rolling week.

    You can't police people's minute actions. Quitting or Rage Quitting is something that should be overlooked and/or ignored. If anything it should be a compliment to the other player who didn't quit because while you didn't "kill" (defeat) you opponent you made them "retreat" (quit).
    People quit for more reasons that just anger. Maybe they have been irritated by other players who have been talking crap after beating them and think you're the next douchebag to put new salt into their old reopened wounds. So just say to yourself that the other player "is just having a bad time right now" if he quits on you.

    I have a question. Can you do a video about the difference in using a controller and a fight stick in fighting games? I am from the Oldschool where I always play with a controller. I didn't get to the arcades much in my youth, so I pretty much took to the console versions of the fighting games more. Now that the arcades are almost gone, I notice that fight sticks are all the rage, and that I find myself pressing the buttons on my controller rapidly and my executions are not fully responding. Is there a difference in button command timing from between a controller and a fight stick?

    • @paatwo
      @paatwo 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      one of the bigger differences is that an arcade stick lets you have 1 hand dedicated to movement and one for the buttons, in most fighting games with a controller you don't have enough buttons to dedicate 1 hand per movement/buttons. Hope it helps a little

      Nicholas Harris its called counter picking, its like in street fighter 4, an abel will win like 99% of the time against a dudley because dudley simply doesn't have any moves to counter abel while abel has a billion counters for dudley. thats the problem with games that have a lot of characters but yeah you could still win but the odds are against you

    • @nicholasharris9424
      @nicholasharris9424 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marty Ruiz He wasn't talking about counter picking. He was talking about "Spammers" and "Tryhhards". And counter picking isnt an instant win if you aren't a good player. I suspect that nobody here is that great to begin with (I'm not either) but don't complain especially if you don't have a scene or never play real people and only play online. The average online warrior tends to not be very good anyway.

    There does need to be some kind of honor in playing fighting games, be it casual or competitive. If you win, you win. If you lose, you lose. Good game, would play again, live and learn, all that noise.
    However, I will admit I have ragequit more times than I like to share. Mostly it comes form demoralization after losing so many times in a row where I just go "Fuck it. I'm done." That being said, there should be a better form of punishment for ragequitters. Like you said in Injustice, the other player RQing causes YOU to lose. That is bullshit. If anything it should be the other way around. I did see someone say there should be a mechanic that says "If you ragequit you can't play for X amount of time," and the more it happens, the more time is added. It would certainly keep frequent ragers from building a fake win/loss ratio (and for someone like me, it'd give that person time to cool off).

    I think you will find many fighting games with combo systems tend to suffer the same trend. Some characters have very few combos and maybe one or sometimes two that are really affective. It's kinda your responsibility to find ways to shut these combos down and punish. Playing multiple characters to learn their strengths an weaknesses really helps.

And when people use cheap tactics, all you have to do is change playstyle. It's all about knowledge and patience. To win you need to earn it, not wanting it.

    3 things to take in for this issue.
    1* If the person leaves that's part of the game but if the person turns his console
    or closes the program/ unplugs his internet that's just bad sportsmanship.
    2*Leaving is ok if versing some one using a lag switch or with bad connection and or
    if spamming.
    3*The only other thing that can justify leaving is if you just got the game and lets say you have played 1 match and the system puts you against some one who has played 59,000.

    As my buddy put it regarding UMVC3, "I didn't pay 60 bucks just watch my character get bounced around for 2 or so minutes while I wait for chance to actually use my controller. If I'm not having fun, I leave." Honestly, I can't disagree with that logic; after all, it was his money, and now it's his game, so he's free to as he pleases with it. BUT there is a really, so incredibly non-offensive solution to this that honestly, I'm sort of shocked it hasn't been brought up yet. If you're just not getting how the game the works, especially one as unforgiving as UMVC3, and you are getting constantly destroyed, and you're dropping on people, PROTIP *****PLAY THE GAME OFFLINE******. Just play offline; thre is no shame in that. Work your way up. Figure it out. Learn to enjoy it. Play it locally with friends. I don't know. Maybe that might help.

    Rage quitting is perfectly valid. I paid for this game to have fun. If I'm getting my shit wrecked CONSISTENTLY, I am not having fun, thus I leave. All this talk about "honor" and "sportsmanship" is bullshit. I don't care how 'honorable' you think I am, I want to WIN. All these people that bitch about rage quitting are almost always assholes that rag on other people that they beat. You don't learn shit from getting hosed whenever you try and take a step. You don't learn anything when you get speed blitzed as soon as the match starts. You don't learn anything from getting smacked around by people that are eight times your level after having started playing like a week ago. Miss me with that bullshit.

They didn't take care of it straight out of the box mind you but when someone would lose their connection on purpose or not they would get a loss and the other person would get the win. This cut out a lot of rage quitting once 2K Football figured it out. 2K was doing this in the early to mid 2000s so all these other online games should've took a page out of 2Ks book.

      +Friedrich Nietzsche It's even worse in MMO's because balance there actually sucks. You'd have classes dedicated to single target small scale fights lock down one target and time the stuns correctly, not get the burst damage off thus being at a disadvantage (critical hits are luck based), then disengage and people complain. Then such classes get nerfed and it becomes all about cheap condis and AoE's.
      Fighting game losses by comparison always feel much fairer since the blame is on the player himself and not on bad teammates or rely on luck of the draw randomly bad compositions.

      Yes. Rage quitting is wrong. But the problem is that these games do everything to encourage it. This will stop rage quitting (for the most part). A Get rid of the ranking system. B. Just record the number of wins without worrying about streaks. C. Award fight money to BOTH the winner and the loser to get new outfits. THIS WAY, THERE WOULD BE NO POINT IN RAGE QUITTING. Sure, some people would still do it. But there would be no reason to. What's the point of rage quitting if there's no record of it, and you're still going to get some 'fight money' anyway?

      +Luis Mediavilla still no reason to rage quit.
      rage quitters are still rage quitters no matter how you slice the cake the main difference is that the person that doesn't rage quit has more sportsmanship and more determination to get better

      michaael stanfield not even remotely true. I rage quit plenty of times yet I still study what I did wrong in the match and hit up practice mode. If a match is so one-sided than there is no point in continuing it.

    thanks max,for bringing the issue of rage quitting to a bigger audience.im sure everyone has had this happen on more than one accation and just the amount of frustration it causes it needs to be taken into consideration,all these game developers claim that there community is great then do nothing to penalize those who abuse it.the fact they cant handle a loss just so they can stay on the top of a leaderbord is just pathetic so i hope more people see how this is effecting the online community.

      Souls games are the surefire way to judge if you're a coward or if you can take losing. Nothing brings it out of you more than getting TWoP and 4v1 murdered by Havel Moms with Gold Tracers. You can either disconnect and go bitch about it on Reddit, or you can shrug it off and say "hey, that was only about 30 seconds, and it was out of my hands that I died there" and simply keep going.

    thing I hate about sfxt is that if my Internet comes across a spike n disconnects me or same thing with a power cut
    I lose 200bp for nothing to do with me
    the game takes it as me rage quitting and im like 'NO' my Internet cut out
    sooo the makers need to do something about that
    hell just give the other guy more bp n give me a loss score instead of throwing me back 200 points

    Has nothing to do with anger. Some people don't want to get combo'd through the whole fight and never have a chance to do anything. Getting your ass whooped by a no life sucks and doesn't help you get better at the game despite what no lifes like to say.

    • @TyRiders2
      @TyRiders2 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Nick B Calling them No Lives further proves the point here. If you get bodied in a match by somebody who's better, that's a good thing because you're job to figure out what your problem is. If you don't take the game seriously than you shouldn't be playing online at all period. Offline is probably better for you.

    7:04 to 7:30, that's the main reason I don't go near online in fighting games at all. What's the point of learning to play certain fighting game & get better if players are going to rage quit every time things don't go their way? I can say the same thing about sports games as well. Shooter games are the worst when it comes to rage quit. Good video.

    Why the hell does the other guy quitting give you a loss? What a terrible game.
    Also, all these people claiming they have to rage quit because of "spammers" lol. If you can't beat someone, you suck guys. Sorry to be the one to tell you this. There is no "wrong way" to play a game other than hacking it. If these "spammy" characters can beat your close range character from far away, why would they not just do that? Why give you a chance to beat them? That's retarded. If the best way to win is to play these "cheap" characters that you don't like... guess what, you're playing a bad game. Stop complaining about people doing the smart thing and winning the easiest way. OR find a way to counter them if they are so "bad at the game".

      I'm not being mindless, nor am I be ignorant & I dislike people who complain & try to make their opinions fact. Yes, I did read your post & just because they want to choose a character that they don't like, doesn't mean the game is bad.

    • @CYD2
      @CYD2 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Edward Smith I disagree. "Cheap" players are what ruin the game especially if you're a beginner, it ruins the game and learning to get better. They are able to be countered, it's not impossible to beat them if you're skilled enough but I think it's unfair for beginners trying to learn a game.

    • @FakeKraid
      @FakeKraid 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      JACMIC22 you get better at games by learning how to beat people. You stay bad at games by complaining that anyone doing something that beats you is "being cheap". The sooner you learn this, the better off you're going to be in life in general. Stop complaining and demanding that other people stop challenging you.

    I don't like to quit really because the more i play the more time i get to download them such as playing them in Marvel and such and SF but i really lose the motivation when you get generic teams or generic characters who use the same things to get a win and try to taunt or teabag you and when you play them again they either quit or they lose. I'm trying to learn characters but when I go online all i see really is Hulk/Sentinel teams or Blankas and Ryus... its sad

      bulbasaur90 How about penalizing rage quitters by adding a match quit to their record? The record of someone who rage quits quite often could read something like this:
      Total matches: 1000
      Wins: 400 (40%)
      Losses: 300 (30%)
      Matches quit: 300 (30%)
      I'd imagine a record like this would likely be more far more stigmatizing than a low win percentage. Even without making any moral judgement calls, you'd know there's a 30% chance this opponent will drop on you mid-match. Whether his connection is prone to horrible lag or he just has a poor handle on his temper, I wouldn't want to play this guy.

    I know this videos a bit old but I'm so glad I watched this. I've recently started okay Street Fighter x Tekken and I'm trying to learn Cammy and Ibuki. Online I just seem to be a hot mess and sometimes get lucky with one or two wins but it frustrates me that I lose to people who spam a move on me that I can't get out of. I didn't rage on but tried to find a way to get around it.

    1. you want to learn and get better others want to play many games instead of 1
    2. matchmaking sucks, you know if i play online as a noob my opponent needs to be a noob to and not a pro
    i'm somebody who plays for fun.. i play wwe 2k15 and people who use running attacks just play boring and only care about winning not about real wrestling and use different moves so yes then i have the rights to quit.
    noob vs pro is not a option if i can not do 1 move it's just fuck u and disconnect. IT'S VERY NORMAL
    then if somebody disconnects you want a free win? as long you can't see you win or beat a A.I player then you not beat anybody get it? noob vs pro does not deserve a point for winning to sorry. you play hardcore others casual. better they make a casual ranking and pro ranking.. if you win too much you can't enter casual untill you keep losing in pro/hardcore

    • @hilleltaco
      @hilleltaco 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Someone winning because they play to win in a game where your goal is to beat other players does not give you the right to quit. in fighting games, you try to beat the other player, meaning you usually play your best. Why would you not?

    • @scepgineer
      @scepgineer 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      pascal tettero
      If you're a noob, the ranking system should give you opponents with a similar skill. But when there aren't enough people with your skill online you will get opponents that may be better than you, there is no other option.
      If you notice that there are to many good players online just go to the practising mode and play singleplayer.
      But when you start a multiplayer game remember that there will always be a risk for you to loose against another person, so if you can't handle it and it makes you feel so uncofortable that people exist who are able to beat you or even easily beat you without you being able to do 1 move, maybe you shouldn't start a multiplayer game then.
      If you think rage quitting is "...VERY NORMAL" and you "have the rights" to do it, you are simply deluding and comforting yourself, so that the fact of you being a coward is not as uncomfortable to you.
      Have a good day Sir.

    Great Analysis keep up the good work helps me look at how rage seems to mentally distort a situation to make you view it wrongly.
    Even though I never rage quit online it still helps me rise farther in what I do because to be good at what you do you have to be able to learn how to face and deal with losses.

    Loved this vid because it spoke about a lot of things that have tempted me about rage quitting, but I've never done it before. I always feel I join a fighting game "too late" and then wouldn't be as good as everyone online, but that's just fear really. It tempts me to rage quit but never too badly like anyone else. A forfeit button would be cool though.

    What I really hate is when you do a methodical application of basic moves and they don't know how to punish it (if they know how you obviously switch gears) some people will think you're "cheating".
