    I think vertical mounts also help with how dusk settles in the GPU: When horizontal it will rest on all horizontal surfaces (most of the heat sink, fans and circuit board) while in vertical it will settle in less areas. Could help with cooling if the side panel is mesh

    • @CyberCPU
      @CyberCPU  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The distance from the side panel is one of the issues. Luckily I have a very spacious case.

      That presumes you don't blow the dust out on a regular basis before it could even remotely affect temps. I guess some people don't ever change the oil or filters in their car either.

    Cool idea for a video, but the test hardware makes the test irrelevant. It needs to be done with a 4090. It’s the only way you could possibly draw any conclusions.

      So the way electron flow in a wire works is that individual electrons actually move pretty slowly, but as an electron moves, it moves adjacent electrons. The net effect is that electricity moves very near the speed of light. One light millisecond is ~ 182 miles. So if your riser cable was 182 miles long, you'd introduce around 1ms extra latency. 4-6" is not going to be measurable with consumer grade equipment.

    More concerned about the temps than performance or looks in this situation. Assuming you've had it hooked for 6 months like this, you should've also done temp checks for a while to see if anything changes or goes potato. Dust is a freakin' killer no matter where it goes.

But I know other people like it and care about the way their PC's look. Not that I don't, because I do.. Then, There's the other side who go small form factor and just jam everything in that they can fit.. I've always been a Mid to full ATX guy.. I love tempered glass, Ex, I have the White Phanteks P500A and before that I had an NZXT H500 white case.. Me Personally I just see another point of failure when I look at a riser cable or any other cable thats not needed... That's how I look at everything that I build and Buy, I look for weakness, or the week Link.. A riser cable is just another point of failure to add to the already many points of failure... No offense to people who use them. I get it though it looks great and to each his own.

But it exploded on the PCIe on the power side, I could prevent a lot of damage, but it took the older PSU in its fall. Now I use a riser many months, never had issues with it, it's mounted on an EK universal PCIe 4 bracket.

  • @mikek2951

    I don't understand how using a riser cable would make any kind of difference in performance. It's basically just an extension cord to the slot slot so you can mount if vertical. In my case I'm planning on mounting vertically to get rid of the noise caused by trapped bubbles in the sub-par AIO setup EVGA sells with their hybrid kits. Someone suggested I try it, and find it ridiculous to have to use the pump bypass thing to get my pump to stop sounding like a vibrating dildo when I'm browsing the Internet. I get excellent temps in no matter what game I play, so I won't go back to the typical air cooled setup. 60C tends to be the maximum. Also, not interested in spending hundreds extra for one of the specialty AIO solutions that probably don't offer much better cooling than what I get.

    My mount is adjustable, So my fans aren't directly facing the case pushing hot air onto the glass. It shoots upwards at an angle where my top/rear mounted fans pull all that air out. I didn't do any experiments or anything, but logically, you'd think that it helps with keeping the GPU temp down to an extent.

    • @Bobs_Tech

    You held that card by the GPU pins when you removed it and when you re-installed it You're a very bad boy - apart from sweat contamination on the pins, you'll get away with it most times until one day a static discharge will result in no boot screen. Don't show newbies bad habits ! Personally I reckon a riser-card is a waste of time and money and in some cramped cases could result in less fresh air cooling to the GPU which is the expensive component you want to protect as much as possible.

    Instead of looking at frame rates, you should look to see if the degrades the communication bandwidth with the GPU or if the bus has to drop to Gen3 to be able to communicate via the PCIe. This degradation to Gen3 might not affect the frame rate of games. But if we are using the GPU for massive parallel program running (data crunching , data science, etc ) then a bandwidth degradation might be to half the bandwidth.

    I've always thought that risers cable length is meaningless as distance is so little. What I've been curious is that could it be possible to cause odd system behavior with them in correct situation. That meaning ie. excessively noisy psu or other component that could possibly create field of effect. In theory to my knowledge it could be possible, but in practice? Don't have a clue. I know for fact that it's possible to get faulty readings on sensors if incorrectly shielded cables run near power lines. I think the correct English term is inductance for the phenomenon? Anyway, even in if it would be possible, I don't think it would be shown in fps, but severe system instability.
