  • The best GPU orientation is an interesting topic to discuss but GPU orientation tests are also hard to conduct due to case and cooling limitations. That's where the Lian Li O11 Dynamic Evo comes in because it allowed us to test FIVE different GPU orientations like vertical vs horizontal and also upright, upright reversed and downdraft. So what's the best GPU orientation anyways?

    Hi Dmitri, problem with the IO towards the top orientation is well known in the SFF community, the problem is that most modern GPU's have issues with heatpipe physics in that orientation, so we try to avoid it. Unfortunately not all case manufacturers are aware of that. Thanks for the awesome testing as usual :)

    To fix the sag on the Lian Li vertical GPU mount you have to move the PCIe slot itself forward on the bracket. From factory they come a little too far back which pushes the GPU forwards/down. Sliding it back pulls the GPU towards the back of the case and eliminates the bracket sag.

    Running a 4090 in vertical orientation with bottom fans too. But I have a larger case (Phanteks Enthoo Primo) and the bottom fans drop the GPU temps significantly - I actually have the fans set to only spin once the GPU fans are spinning too.
    AIO rad is top mounted to extract with push pull. Plus 3 fans as front intake and 1 rear extractor.
    All fans are 140mm and they only turn on once temps are high enough so the PC is silent when I'm not gaming.

    I used to be a big proponent of vertically mounted (outputs at the top) GPUs, owning both a Silverstone FT02 and FT05, but that was when GPUs were available with blower coolers. I then got a RTX 2080 Ti with a standard cooler and that's when it went wrong. I mounted the GPU normally in my FT05 and for the first few months it was fine. Then I started to notice high temperatures. These went away when I put the FT05 on its side so the GPU was upright. Gravity wins in the end.

  • @majd00shka
    @majd00shka ปีที่แล้ว +22

    I've got the same case and done almost every possible way to check the GPU thermals. For the vertical GPU and air-cooled cards like the one you tested, you need to have fans on the side of the case as exhaust. Plus, you have to keep the GPU closer to the bottom fans which will force the air to move from the bottom to the top with less turbulence.
    For the upright GPU in normal mode, you need to flip the GPU and you must have fans behind it. Moving the card towards the glass will give you a better thermal too. And you need to use the 200mm riser cable with your 600mm one to make it work.
    The best thermal that I got for a 30 series Strix card is in a vertical orientation in normal mode. Keeping the bracket at the lowest close to the bottom fans. 10 Fans in total in the case ( Intake from the bottom and the back fans. Exhaust from the sides and the top. )

    • @kajtjuhhh3722
      @kajtjuhhh3722 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What would you say to be the best fan configuration for reverse mode with a horizontally mounted GPU in a situation with 10 fans (3 bottom, 3 side, 3 top and 1 rear) also including that 1 set of 3 fans are connected to an AIO (and on a radiator). I am currently leaning towards:
      #1
      Top: 3 fans intake
      Bottom: 3 fans intake
      Side: (AIO radiator) 3 fans exhaust
      Rear: 1 fan exhaust
      In this scenario the cool air wil come from the bottom and the top and will be exhausted on both the side and rear of fhe case and the GPU fans which are facing upwards will pull fresh cool air into the GPU.
      Did you also test this/what are youre thoughts on this?

    • @majd00shka
      @majd00shka 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @kajtjuhhh3722 I haven't tried that configuration. Keep in mind the law of physics that cold air fall down and hot air rise up.
      The configuration you mentioned might trap some air in the center of the case as there is opposites air colliding on each other on the card level, having positive pressure due to the number of fans and the lack of anything to guide the air will not give you the optimal temperature.
      If you have a 3d printer, go upright and design a deflector that guide the air coming out of your gpu to the side fans. This will be the ultimate cooling solution for your gpu. Side will be exhaust. You can use 3x 140mm fans at the bottom to get the optimal air pressure. You can do that without screwing the outer bolts of the outer fans.

    • @kajtjuhhh3722
      @kajtjuhhh3722 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@majd00shka Good point, I was indeed aware of the hot air rising and the cold falling down. I just build a pc for myself and in the near future I am going to build my brother the same pc aswell, but probably in reverse mode (Lian li o11d evo rgb case) because of his setup 'demanding' the pc to be on his left and him still wanting to see inside the pc, rather than the side with a mesh panel. You seem to have a better understanding with configuring fans in a reverse mode case. What would you say would be the most 'optimal' configuration for the fans in reverse mode with an horizontally mounted GPU (leaving the vertical mount options out of the picture)? I have not yet researched enough about building reverse with a horizontally mounted GPU, so I also need to do that aswell, but I am curious about your opinion.
      So in this case it is still 10 fans total with positioning possibilites of 3x 3 fans and 1x 1 fan.

    • @majd00shka
      @majd00shka 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Whatthefckkk what I meant was to flip it so the I/O ports will be facing down so the PCIE side will be towards the front of the case. In this way, you only support the GPU with the side fans bracket.

    The vertical GPU mount can be screwed into the top (or bottom) of the case with 4 screws and in very solid. Additionally there’s a bracket that comes with the mount to secure the other end of the gpu that’s especially useful when mounting it in reverse mode,
    I’m in the process of putting together a reverse build with gpu in an upright, inverted position with a couple of fans mounted behind it to pull the warm gpu air out of the case. I’ll update with the temps when it’s complete.

    It still requires a PCI-E Riser which is another point of failure and is kinda expensive if you need to replace, and it blocks all other PCI-E slots bellow it. I like how Sharkoon did on their REV series of cases in fact I have one of said PC cases. GPU is vertical but still directly attached to the motherboard. Only downside I noticed is you'll probably need at least one or two of your cables to be lengthier.

    Pretty sure moving the fans to the front in the upright config had them fighting the fans on the GPU rather than feeding them more air. The front fans might be moving air past the GPU faster than the GPU fans can pull it through the cooler. If you have a shorter GPU, I'd love to see that test with the fans back in the bottom.

    I would have changed the top intake fans to exhaust in the reverse configuration. Having them as intake with the GPU pointed directly at them would cause turbulence resulting in the cool & warm air mixing. The radiator fans could then be used as intake or you could have tried an air cooler with intake fans in the front of the case.

So... x3 fans already on galahad trinity water cooler, if I buy only 6 extra fans this is going to be enough right? 3 fans to top or front depending on the cooler position this is in the pocket. Another issue with horizontal orientation is that, due to common fin orientation on the coolers, the air is typically pushed toward the side of the case or the motherboard. Most of the air pushed toward the mobo has very little direction to go but down, which causes a bit of a heat loop. Love the ability to mount in different orientations like this in mainstream cases. LONG overdue.
    It makes sense that the "upright" orientation is so hot. One side of the card is entirely blocked by the front of the case and the graphic card's fans are competing with the front fans (i.e. trying to pull air in as the air is simultaneously being pushed across/away).

      That's why we need separate chamber in the bottom for gpu I think Dell case have this before but they put the gpu on top... Lian li can just put in the bottom so it can get fresh air from 3 vertical fans on the left side and exhaust in the right side..

  • @AndroidBeacshire

    the upright position blocks most of the video cards exhaust fins, which is why it sucks. while the vertical mode has one side of the vga's exhaust fins blowing against the bottom intake fans, which causes some of the exhaust air to re-enter the vga's intake.
    horizontal offers the best performance because the intake fans blow straight into the vga fans and they also help blow the exhaust air from the vga up towards the exhaust fans at the top of the case,
    i fitted a seperator for my horizontal vga to help prevent the exhaust air re-entering the vga's intake, kind of like having seperate intake and exhaust compartments

    Why didnt you test the upright with intake fans on bottom? Were power cables really impossible to work around? I would expect unrestricted chimney airflow to help temps a lot.

  • @LurenZ87
    @LurenZ87 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, thanks for the video. I want to bring you back about my experiences with my current case, a Fortress FT05 with several boards. Then the orientation of the heatpipes is the key to everything, ie in cards where they are positioned vertically (type RX 480 Nitro) the card works correctly if rotated 90 °, while in others where the heatpipes are positioned horizontally (like your RTX 4080 in the video) the temperatures jump to them, in fact if you go to analyze the hotspot temperatures you will see huge differences and in some cases even at the limit of operation. With an RX 5700XT Aorus I had this problem, with the gpu at 80 ° c and the hotspot at 110 ° in continuous throttling, same thing with my RX 6900XT Reference, turned 90 ° the vapor-chamber does not work properly, which solved by rotating the case 90 °, with the configuration reversed as in your last test. Rotating the vga 90° made sense when there were references with the blower, now they are useless and counterproductive. Sorry for the long speech and for my bad English. Greetings from Italy .

    I ran into the Upright position issue when upgrading my GPU in a Silverstone Alta G1M. My Morpheus II modded 1080ti had no issues with the orientation, but the new 6800xt did. It got bad enough that I ended up inverting the entire case (bootleg feet on the top, flipped it upside down, set former intake fan on bottom to exhaust) for a much more effective result.
    I would be curious of the numbers with an inverted upright GPU in this specific case, but I also acknowledge the lack of an "official" bracket to do so.

    So I have a thermal take core P8 which comes with a vertical mount tray and PCIe riser cable.
    So obviously I installed my GPU vertically.
    I should note that my GPU is a 3080ti, aka a heat monster.
    After about a month I start getting visual problems on my monitor as in my monitor was blocking out.
    Last time I saw a blackout so thoroughly it involved tequila and some really bad choices.
    Turns out that the heat from my GPU had actually fried the ribbing of cables in the PCIe rider cable.
    Fortunately, the case being modular, I was able to essentially disassemble the vertical mounting cage, turn the slots 90° and mount my GPU correctly apparently into the motherboard.
    Seems I may have inadvertently saved myself some trouble in the future when upgrading to a bigger GPU

    Just to add some testing confusion, I have my O11EVO in a horizontal position, reversed with a CPU AIO, with extra fans for a push/pull configuration, exhausting from what would have been the top of the case, and intake fans at what would have been the bottom of the case, I also plan to add intake fans at the front since currently there is negative air pressure created between the reverse mount GPU and the CPU's AIO setup.

    imo the biggest reason why vertical orientation resulted in higher temperature is because that for this particular gpu heatsink it is way too big and therefore its gpu fans were not getting enough clearance from the side panel

    I've used Corsairs Carbide Air 540 in 6 builds. Easy to work in, decent air flow (provided you add fans), 2 HDD cages, 4 SSD and 2 spots for DVD players. I still use CDs and DVDs. Because I like how it looks, I recently used Fractals "North" (charcoal) in a build. An Arctic 280 with a PowerColor 7900XTX barely fits. Tubes are at the bottom and swing out and up between the side glass and GPU. I'm not "into" RGB and I'm looking at the front of the PC in any event, so where the AIO tubes are is not a big deal for me. I will need to buy a stand-alone DVD burner. LOTS of home movies on tape to transfer still.
    There were a fair number of good-looking PC cases shown off at Computex. While last gen CPUs and GPUs have fallen to reasonably sane prices (AMD not Nvidia), AM5 and MB and RAM prices are still spike strips in the path of new PC builds. For what I play (GW2 3 years) the AM5/13th Gen uplift would be gilding the lily (pointless). I did see a marked difference in eye candy at 4K going from my 1080Ti to AMDs 6900XT to PowerColor 7900XTX. I did NOT see an uplift in effective game play performance. The 1080Ti with sane settings at 4K played GW2 at 80 to 130 FPS (according to EVGA Precision X). According to AMDs software, 120 FPS avg at 4K with eye candy maxed. I've used a X-99, X570 with 3600X, 5800X and X570S with 5800X3D. No, GW2 is hardly Cyberpunk and there is no RT option (to tank performance), but with shadows, etc. all maxed, RT would likely be pointless.
