Thank you so much for helping these babies. I have a large rescued hermit crab myself (I got her in August) and... oh boy... the conditions were really bad. She was in a 10 gallon tank with filthy, blue calci-sand, white gravel, pellet food, no attempt to keep humidity, and almost no water. I saw 2 giant shells, and a bunch of small crab legs and bits spread all over the tank. I assumed it was shed exo, until I asked the employee if I could take a look at them. She told me that they only had 1 big hermit crab left and that she was mean. She ate the other baby hermit crabs in the tank because while they made changes to the store, no one fed them. She was starving for a pretty long time before she did that. By the looks of it, no one really made an effort to take care of her after that, thinking she was just too aggressive. They were just waiting to get a new shipment. I picked her up and had to take her home. I gave her food, water, and everything else she needed in ISO, while I prepped her real tank. By the time I came back, she had dragged the food dish into the corner, dumped it out and ate like she had never been fed in her life. I was so sad. I kept her in ISO for a month to regulate her diet before introducing her to the others. It's December now, and she's doing SOOO much better. Her color is gorgeous, she loves her baby brothers and sisters and gets along with them extremely well, she changed into several beautiful turbo shells since then (she had a dirty cracked murex before), and her energy is through the roof. XD However because of the way she was neglected at the pet store, she has some minor gill damage. That will never heal or go away, so she's also my "special needs crab" as it were. But she has improved so ridiculously and I think is currently prepping for her first molt at home. I'm so proud of her. ^w^
Aww, this sounds exactly like my little special needs boy!! He was pretty much about to die when I got him. His big claw is deformed and, even though he's molted several times, it will never go away. It definitely doesn't hinder him a bit though. He's the most energetic crab I have, climbs and digs like a champ, and eats like a beast 🤍
It’s so sad that pet stores think it’s ok to treat animals like this, I think they purposely don’t tell people how to properly care for there crabs so they have to come back and buy more after they die. At least you saved these guys in time, they look really happy now.
My pet store I go to recommends a lot of things that channels like this do! Like not using the hermit crab sand, giving them lots of things to climb on, giving them 6 inches of substrate and many other things, and that makes me happy that there’s at least one store that sells them properly in a 15 gallon tank with 6 inches of eco earth substrate
@@dankmegatron313 That's how my pet store is as well. However, it's locally owned and not part of a chain, so that might be a reason. I was only ten when I got my crabs (I'm almost sixteen now), and if it had not been for them giving me the correct information AND recommending TH-cam channels and websites to help me, they all would have died. My first crab came from a Petsmart and was kept improperly, and soon died. But I have since rescued (not from pet stores) seven hermits, and have not lost a single one since that first crab.
pet stores do this w all of their animals sadly… I’m sure it’s for that reason too… they especially do this w fish… recommending tanks far too small! It’s sad but there’s nothing we could really do.
Awhile back I mentioned too you I rescued (purchased) 5 hermit crabs from a injured quarantine cage while on vacation w/ family. Yea my 3 little daughters had wanted hermits for a few yrs. brought them back on road trip in best conditions possible. Set them up in a smaller tank to get started too relieve the stress they must of been under as best as we could. (with the whole family doing intense research before during about hermits) They looked to have been enjoying their new environment.. their diet was hand made well prepared diet we gave to them slowly trying to get them to eat fresh organic diet rather then just pellets they were used too. A few days later They went under one by one different parts of tank. Month .5 later we have great looking hermits with all their limbs great color enjoying life in a 30gal tank with 2 water pools w/ air aerators climbing walls spider plants veinus fly traps 8” sub base mix grape wood cave etc. we can literally hand feed them. Awesome fascinating animals. We still have one multing in original set up tank. 😁😁😁👍🏼 We feel we have gave them a better life. We are very excited to have them healthy and happy
Ps they have also switched shells. It is so funny their personalities some want to hide and burry the ones they want some will move one around with them etc but it’s settling down now plenty of shells To choose from and pretty much they have settled into their new shells. One just doesn’t want choose the right size shell he (strawberry). Still likes a shell smaller than what he should have, and so many varieties of natural shells for each hermit too choose from 🤗
A crab of mine recently went under the substrate next to the glass creating a window into his buried world. Should I cover the glass around his burrow window to block out light and presumably avoid stressing the hermit?
You just getting a new subscriber. I learned a lot of information just from this one video, and I think you spreading this information is going to save a lot of hermit lives. Not to mention, you are incredibly pretty which definitely helps digest the information lol Keep up the good work and have a good night
Hi. Great video! Great rescue work. Unfortunately I do know of the Palmetto bug, YUCK! They love in trees that are all over the southern area. Virginia, Carolina, Georgia, Florida etc. I think Kermit and Cain (Kane, Cane) are absolutely beautiful. Love your channel. Keep em' comin'.🙏💖
I have 3 hermit crabs, ball your fist up, they are that big, the 2 bigger ones keep trying to kill the slightly smaller one, Jerry, what should I do because I have him in a temporary 10 gallon, I would like to move him back into the big 50 gallon tank, but I'm afraid that they will try to kill him again.
Do they always molt when the go under?? I have 2 crabs that have both buried them selves more then once since getting them and it’s only been about 8 months since we’ve had them
I just got two hermit crabs that have been in that beach cage and same shell for over a year I just bought them a new habitat will be here in two days along w bigger shells will they live ☹️
I didn’t quarantine my crabs because I didn’t have any crabs at the moment and they came from the same place so I didn’t quarantine but if I get another in crab I will quarantine it
It probably was harmful, but in that moment my options were to leave him, and he would definitely die, or do something stressful and drastic with a chance of survival. He is now thriving!
I have another question, one of my hermit crabs disappeared about a week ago, I’m guessing he is molting now due to his excessive eating and his dark color. I have only 6 inches of substrate and I’m worried my other hermit crabs might eat him. I don’t know how I can help him because I don’t know where he is. How do I know if he’s molting, he’s just hiding, he is already dead, or if he was cannibalized?
@@megabidoofdude1780 Keep an eye on the other crab and if it starts digging remove from the tank. Feed the surface crab really well and give lots of protein. Most crabs will not cannibalize if they are fed a proper diet. You can also gently add an inch or two of substrate to the tank without hurting the molting crab.
I have a hermit crab question. Me and my fiancé have a hermit named Mr.Krabs and there are tiny little bugs flying in his habitat they are a little bit bigger than a nat. I was wondering how do I get rid of the bugs? Is there anything all natural I can put in habitat to get rid of them? Thankx and love your videos
They are probably fruit flies, which are drawn to the tank when food is left in for too long. It is usually best to put fresh food in every night and remove it the next morning.
I think hermit crans COULD be a good class pet for older kids. Likee 13-18 age range. My old teacher had them, he had 12 in a 55 gal with a 20 topper. He had everything they need to thrive, and used them to teach us how to care for delicate things. Definitely not good for kids that are to toung to uderstand why you cant hold them and the concept of molting. As for the palmetto bugs in the tank. I had it happen once. Idk how they got in but they did. Luckly i got them out before anything bad happened and it was only one.

Hermit crabs don't deserve the abuse they get, treat them with love and thank you for saving their life 😊
I love this video!! I can't believe the palmetto bugs tho!! I really hope you keep those lovely crabbies, they look so happy.
Yeah, the palmetto bugs were crazy!
Wow, I had no idea it was this hard to care for them.
Its not hard

I would leave it. Normally they will move further away on their own, but if not that's okay.
I had one do this bis entier molt(3 months) he molted fine. It was really cool to watch. How is your crab? Did it molt well?
I have a Kermit the Hermit too! Keep up the good work!

That would be a great video! Unfortunately, it is not a topic I am very educated about. Maybe one day...
If you’re still interested you should check out Crabstreet Journal channel as she has all kinds of bugs and stuff living with the crabs.
