John Scofield is Monterey Jazz Festival's 2023 Showcase Artist.
A collaboration between rotating funk ensemble Scary Pockets (anchored by guitarist Ryan Lerman and keyboardist Jack Conte) and keyboardist Larry Goldings (who’s played with everyone from Jack DeJohnette and James Taylor to John Mayer), Scary Goldings combines hard-hitting grooves and well-crafted parts with the improvisational genius of Goldings and guitar god John Scofield to make for a truly fun and unique time.
Scofield is a legend. And Tal brings SO much to any session she's on bass - a future legend, indeed!
Watching and listening to John play guitar never gets old. Tal playing so funky and hasn’t aged in ten years.
Tal sounding as great as ever since her days with the late great Jeff Beck🙏
Pros having a good time, so were the listeners. Lovely to see Tal again :)
Everybody killing it!!! Tal sounding great...and the groove is scary indeed!
Nice to see Tal back on Bass again....!!
Agreed! Been awhile since I've seen or heard anything from her.
@@fastinbulvis2223 she filled in several large shows with Incubus this summer. she's been working :)
pluck pluck, dandandan pluck bzz bzz bzz ...Tal = bass.
She's got a couple solo albums, and they're amazing
Yep ! Groovy as hell 😋. With such a bass face, cannot be bad !
While John and Tal are listed in the headline... lets not miss Larry Goldings on organ. He's a major player as well. Starting with Maseo Parker through to James Taylor's touring band with Steve Gadd, Michael Landau, Jimmy Johnson. He's played with some amazing players in his career. And it's still on fire. Check out his trio work with Goldings, Bernstein & Stewart. And Scary Pocket and may others. He's a beast of player. And very tasty.
Damn straight
yeah, and he wrote this music too
@@bluecrueful So amazing! Do you know the name of the tune ? I can't find it :/
Sco and Tal are listed in the headline and Larry Golding is in the name of the band! He is the leader (John and Tal are guests). BTW, John and Larry have played together in many projects.
So good to see Tal back on the road again. I could listen to her bassplaying all day!
Why are the bands all white even though the music is black based ?
@@WildtoneMusic Yawn...another Troll trying to start sh!t online
@@WildtoneMusicdoes it matter
@@WildtoneMusic You could say ALL this music is black based as it is rooted in West African rhythms and melodies.
Tal gets to play with the coolest people…or do they get to play with her?
This is Scary Goldings with Scofield and Wilkenfeld
Love Tal Wilkenfeld , she is so awesome. Love when she jamed with Jeff Beck.
Not just ‘jam’; she was in the band for years.
I knew she was 🤘😎
Sco and Tal sound great, buy also give it up for Larry Goldings on the B3. I could listen to this band all night.
Scary pockets jammers with Scofield and Wilkenfeld!! What’s the world coming to!!!😂👍👍👍👏👏
Ted Poor on them drums y'all!
thanks I was gonna ask if anyone could name the drummer, he was in the pocket like a a mofo layin down the funk all set
thank you!
thought it was that shouty TV chef
Thanks! I was wondering how come he is not mentioned in the descriptions, he is really good! An totally new to me.
Indeed! Thanks😉
Is there anything sexier, in the world, than a woman playing a bass? Yes, of course: Tal playing her P Bass...💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Very cool!! Also Tal laying down the funk. Doesn't get any better.
Tal has quintessential bass-face!
It’s actually “Scary Goldings.” Scary Pockets has toured with keyboardist/organist Larry Goldings calling it Scary Goldings. They have been featuring John Scofield on guitar and Mononeon on bass. I guess they had Tal sit in.
Saw them at the Newport Jazz Festival this past August. It was perfect outdoor summer jazz-fest music.
I was there too!
@@danamaguire4285Such a beautiful day!
Great sounding funk~ and featuring Sco and Tal pushes the cool factor way up!
Great Stuff! Had the distinct pleasure seeing John for the 1st time 48 yrs ago George Duke Billy Cobham Band along with Alfonso Johnson
hip pockets, uh huh
BC George Duke band live in Europe one of my top favorite albums of all time
@@alanwatson3367 You have distinctively good good taste my friend! Check out Robben Ford playing with Scary Goldings Humble strut live
We are the same vintage. Amazing to me that fusion got a bad name but it still lives on.
@@jaaklucas1329 Not for casual ears!
Love her very tall Fender Bassman Amp . I had a Fender Bassman 50 top with VT Bassman 2 15 bottom. McCartney used it in the making of Let It Be , the Rooftop and all that. One of the best bass amps ever and at 50 watts tube driven, you could really drive it.
I like when she played a EBS stack and y'd into an Ampeg SVT...she totally had the sound spectrum covered :D
It‘s Scary Goldings ❤
yes I mentioned them in title of the second vid of these guys and will add more mention of Larry Goldings band deservedly so, thanks
Love the sound of the Super Bassman!
They must be expecting a lot of wind with all those clothes pins
Haven't seen Ted Poor since 'Live From Here' ! He's one of my favorite drummers.
Thanks for mentioning his name. I was wondering, who might be this wonderful drummer. 🤝
I was wondering what Tal has been up to these days. Good to see the Sco and her doing that thang. 🎸🌎☮️🤓👍🥓
Check out her cover of Joni's Big Yellow Taxi! Tal is a freakin' beast on bass with the voice of an angel!!!
She filled in for Incubus bassist Ben Kenney early in 2023. Ben was recovering from brain surgery at the time.
Killer band for sure love it!
Tal is as recognizable as Leland Sklar. Talkin' about the hair. And the MASSIVE TALENT!!!!!!
HA HA
Tht's just stupid. She's ok, but no Leland.
@@woudytreez2755 @LerockJohn is referring to their individual distinct Images. Tal and Leland are both extremely talented bassists in their own right and distinctive from each other. They also respect each other. Its not a competition.
Looks like Weird Al
I saw John Scofield only once with Dennis Chambers on drums and was incredible. Glad to see he's still got it and then some! Love Tal Wilkenfeld also, great band.
I like the way Tal moves. She really feels the music! 😉
How anyone could not like this is beyond me. So good.
Good to see Tal back on bass!
isn't it Wilkenfeld ?!?!?
yes thanks I corrected her name, good reminder
OMG ! I love Johns playing. Can`t get enough. Keep on groovin John !!!!!
Saw this band at Newport! They were unbelievable!! The whole set was like this. Great, great band.
Who's the drummer? I didn't catch his name, and I don't think he has recorded with them.
I think it's Ted Poor.
Can somebody please tell me the NAME OF THIS SONG?!
This is top shelf joy! They are ON FIRE ♥
Does anyone ever smile back at Jack Conte? It all seems a bit weird.
Yes they did. As it looks like he is just a secondary keyboardist he is actually the Musical director and Producer and co-founder of Scary Pockets who Golding credits for helping him transition into this new digital music place we are in these days.
That gal, Tal can put the groove in any jam!
Эту прекрасную басистку впервые увидел с великим Джефом Бэком ( Мир ему) 🙏
Great feeling, the drummer and the bassist are waving together
What a bass face and a bass player 🙂 !
Jack and Ryan just allowing everyone to shine - awesome.
What is the name of this tune?
Dang! Killer groove! John's phrasing is just out of this world! Thanks for sharing - inspiring stuff!
The use of space with the phrasing is what's killing it
Man that's some scary pockets there with John and Tal!
I dunno, looks like the rhythm section was having way too much fun, sounded good too!
Tal... always impeccable
Nice to hear something fresh from Scofield again! Before i saw an old man in a boring jacket playing boring Jazz for quite a time.
Don’t mind me, just here for one of the finest musicians I know.. Tal Wilkenfeld. 🔥🔥 okay Sco, and Scary too okay
un excellent musicien ,de jazz électrisant ,innovateur et performant ,une classe atypiques, une légende unique et exemplaire ,c'est un son magistral ,décoiffant
Tal playing precision? This is awesome!!!
She‘s been playing a precision for many years.
Dude, what's that drum fill at 1:51 ??? That's insane!!!
He was on fire all night..
easily amused
Mr Ted Poor
There is SO much talent on that stage right there!
Saw this several times but just noticed Jack Conte doing his usual thing. Didn't realize he was at this game
Scary Goldings is amazing good. Larry is damn funny in his own right aside from burning and this crew is great with all the usual suspects. Tal gave even better stink face than Sco here which is impressive given that he is so masterful at it. I am a little bummed that everyone is name checked somewhere in this post except the drummer. On a faraway glance I thought it was Bill Stewart which it obvi is not. Can anyone help illuminate us?
I also love all of Jack Conte and Ryan Lerman (Scary Pockets) hard work of putting all this together. Jack always seems happiest on his Wurlitzer, and this guitarist misses the one me and my twin brother (drummer) I bought as teenagers. Back in the '70s, you could buy a used (in mint condition) Wurlitzer 200 e. piano for only about $400-500. We could afford one on paper route money! Nowadays they asking ridiculous money, starting around $2K, for ones that are all beat to hell. No thanks. I am not all that nostalgic for the failing tines, noisy audio, and not super portable footprint. I would rather buy a basic used 88-key MIDI controller and load up my laptop with shareware keyboard sounds. OK, rant over.
Ted Poor on drums, wonderful musician. ❤
@@funklover24 Indeed he is!
They sound like Weather Report with a New Orleans accent
Tal was great back with Jeff Beck - she just lacked the finger strength to make her notes non-rattly. Now she has everything under control. Wonderful bass.
Scary Goldings featuring JS and Tal
But the other guys are Scary Pockets, actually
Awesome group!
@West Coast Jazz Collective sound more like Jazz Blues Gorge Benson vibe to me for fonk we talking about parliament funkadelic song would be Flashlight but nice grove the bass player has a nice vibe almost reminds me of Rhonda smith lead guitar reminds of Gorge Benson
Kinda Robben Ford vibe. 🎸👍🏼😊
Totally.
Who's the drummer?
Whats the name of the tune ?
John Scofield Fck the Jeff´s Girl Band....(come on Mr. Beck, come down from up there at once and bring some order to this mess!) oops, am sorry....not used to meddling in other people's business. I take back all that has been said and sincerely apologize.
My favorite Bass Player 😍! 😝
...and thats drummer TED POOR layin down the funk on this gig with John Scofield and Scarry Pockets / Scary Goldings
Jack Conte on keyboard
Ryan Lerman on guitar
thanks man will add credits to those guys, Conte was directing the band on song parts and solos
who's on drums?
The core of Scary Pockets.
appreciate all the comments, more vids from Monterey jazz festival and Scofield, Tal and Scary Goldings coming soon, please subscribe......thanks
Wonderful 😊
Man!! I haven’t listened to The Sco in year… his tone and phrasing is out of this world. Untouchable.
Tai is amazing.
Tal is infectious, you can't take your eyes off her, such a groove
You might like her interview with Lex Fridman.
I definitely can’t take my eyes off her. 🔥
I was having a hard time trying to put my enthusiasm into words, so thank you for enabling me to just add my "Amen, brother(or sister)" to yours. Tal is just a joy to watch and listen to. Also, her "stank face" near the end is one of the best things ever to be captured on video, IMHO.
A lot of "improvisation", but in the end it all boils down to the basis of all music, 3 max. 4 chords with their variations. Otherwise, I consider Scofield a very boring guitarist.
What a hell of a funky lineup....they are all havin fun.
Can someone please help me out here and tell me the title of this particular song? I once knew it but have forgotten the name of the tune, thx in advance!❤
Wonder why John hardly looks over at Tal? Love that old school tone through the Silverface Fender.
Great suff!, Tal keeping everything in the pocket
Larry and John have been playing together for decades. One of my favorite Scofield albums with Larry on organ was Groove Elation, released in 1995.
Old and wide open! Rockjazz of the 80th! 😎🤟😉
That was fun. Thanks for sharing.
The Scary Pockets Funk Band.
Dang, that Gordon Ramsey is one heckuva drummer, eh?! Ok, I keed 😏😉 Anybody know his name? 🥁
Tal and Scofield rip.
I’ve seen Tal with Beck many times and living near Scofield seen him many times with local reg at the Cap theatre bassist Phil Lesh
A Čiča kad je bio u Beogradu pre nekih 15dana svirao starački da smo se svi uspavali!
Bass girl can jam with anybody !..how about with Tower of Power...yeah !..✌️
How come John, when playing, does not look at Tal (at all)? Not a gentleman to me (but great musician, of course).
Soooo good! I haven't hear anything from Scofield in years. Loved it!
Who dat drummer?
What a great band !!!!!!!!
0:50 Вот он секрет, всё дело в прищепках
Hey Jack Conte, where’s going on with Pomplamousse ?
Tal debe extrañar a Jeff. John hace años que está estancado, no me gusta.
Brilliant! John & Larry and the other new stars of jazz funk. I have believed in humanity again 👍
Isnt the guy with the grey hat on keyboards who did that amazing “staying alive” cover ?
does Tal ever grow old??
😂😂😂🙌🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Super, les épingles à linge !!! 😉
When I'm reincarnated, I wanna come back as Tal's p bass.
Its a day on the beach for TAL
