The Marvel's Avengers ones look like they wanted to make them more realistic but still wanted to keep the comics colours, leaving us with this half-way uncanny valley of character design...
I love how instead of giving them personality, all the idles in Marvel's Avengers just make them look like they're just standing around waiting for something to happen
It looks as though Marvel Rivals is the source material, while the avengers game is that character you try to recreate in a very restrictive character creation tool from an RPG
Their proportions just seem so... off? Like I realise the ones in rivals are highly stylised when you have characters like cap who's shoulders are 6x wider than his head at like 8% body fat but the ones in avengers 2020 are too far in the other direction. They don't look like superheroes at all. Black widow is supposed to be peak female physique and in avengers 2020 she looks like a rectangle... I guess my point is rivals is stylised and looks good, even if the physiques are highly unrealistic. The avengers 2020 physiques could absolutely look better while still staying within the realm of realism... But instead most of them look like someone's dad/mum wearing a cheap costume.
It’s not even always the models so much as it is their stiff posture. Black Widow’s is a perfect example, with Rivals Widow conveying a clear personality of relaxed confidence with the hip thrown out and the lean of the upper body, while Avengers Widow stands like a kid awkwardly waiting for their mom to stop talking yo they can ask a question.
Marvel's Avengers really went in to their designs thinking that "realistic" had to mean "flat and lifeless". It's the same problem Concord made in trying to design characters that are _supposed_ to be cool but only because someone told you they're supposed to be cool.
Which is even funnier considering Rivals was made by the Chinese. Chinese devs made Captain America look far more patriotic than the western devs themselves.
Why stylised artstyle is better than realism : 1. Less demanding on resource (graphics and disk spaces), especially hyper-real style 2. Consistent artstyle for each entry/sequel 3. Uniqueness, for example RE>7 and DMC5 characters look the same, while SF6 looks unique.
@@samuelhunter4631yeah just look at games like persona 5, the game originally released for the PS3 yet thanks to the art direction it still looks pretty good
I agree with you but honestly speaking, gameplay and performance matter much more than graphics and art style. If you choose a game based on its graphics and art style rather than its genre and gameplay style , then you are limiting yourself.
The point of superheroes is they're not real. It's supposed to be a fantasy. Making them "realistic" is like trying to make water dry. It's incoherent.
Fr they're supposed to look like the ideal because they embody the best (and maybe the worst) of humanity. They're not supposed to look like the average joe. They're not supposed to look like DEI rejects.
Rivals definitely picked the right Artists for making their Characters look really Cool. More Games need to do that. I'd love to have a MK Game that looked like this.
This is the same thing that happened with mo-cap. Everyone was saying it was the future but it just looked uncanny. So animated movies went back to stylization.
Not only the art style but the art animations too. MR did amazing to give animations & idle position that fit the SUPERHERO characters, meanwhile Avengers did it like some randos lazying around.
That’s not realism, let’s not bring that up as a argument. There’s so much cosplayers that look FAR better than whatever that is on the right. Just like at the MCU.. They just look intentionally bad, not realistic proportions or anything at all.
What I notice a lot about the Avenger character looks is that the crotch is quite low, the legs too short and the feet too small. Apart from the remaining terrible looks, that is a big aspect to why they look so damn strange
The lenght of the legs are anatomically correct in Avengers but compared to the idealized, long form in Rivals, they appear stubby and malformed in comparison.
@Alector12 they're not. The upper body is almost same length as the legs which is very odd looking. I, for example got legs almost double the length of my torso. And while humans are all built differently, here they're not really correct
@@aurorasdrawingcorner human legs are long as their torso, all hands big as their face, their face can be separated in 3 parts, their hand reaches until the middle of their thigh, mostly... but theres always people who dont fit that. Rivals just uses whats seen as more attractive rather than realistic, like long legs and big eyes (which creep me the hell out but alas). You miss the point that rivals used shape language to lead their designs, you can do that in realistic setting and make it good, but it's a comic book inspired game, so it makes more sense to exaggerate.
@Alector12 technically true. The ideal leg length to body ratio (body includes head) is 50-50 for men, and 55-45 to 60-40 for women. However, blackwidow looks the highest at 50-50 and the men look like the head wasn't even included in the ratio. Realistic, yes, but ugly even by our standards
The problem isn't even realism, the Guardians of The Galaxy game goes for realism where the character models and outfits look really good, The Avengers 2020 just has normal looking people wearing bland suits.
The problem with avengers is that they tried to make them look too practical, not necessarily realistic The last descendants showed that you can have video game characters that both look, attractive and realistic obviously But the stylistic choice for avengers was basically making them try to be as “practical” as possible
It's not the art style, it's the soul. I look at Marvel Rivals and recognize the soul and passion in the characters, and that allows me to recognize the actual characters. I look at Marvel Avengers and struggle to recognize the characters
It's funny how the characters in the avengers game are animated so much more than the ones in rivals in this comparison, and yet it does them absolutely zero favors whatsoever. At best it looks like they're trying too hard to act like the characters, and at worst they just look lost and fidgety for no reason. Meanwhile in rivals that one pose tells you everything you need to know.
the problem isnt being realistic or hyper stylized style, it is matter of them not knowing how to utilized the theme of the said concept. the most funny and ironic thing here is, Marvel Avenger game created by Square Enix, but they didnt even bother to use Play Arts Kai concept art for their game creation.
The Avenger's Black Panther suit is actually fire tho. Obviously the stylized, exaggerated comic proportions look cooler, but they had to work within the constraints they had.
Damn, turns out art style is more visually appealing than pure realism for realisms sake... FR though, the Marvel Rivals style is way better, they actually look like comic book hero's.
Both have their place. A hero shooter benefits from an art style while it would be weird for something like call of duty to have human proportions like that. Thought just because the character designs on the right aren't great doesn't mean a realistic art style is inherently bad.
The Captain America design for Avengers particularly pisses me off. It's like the designers were embarrassed to give him red because the red, white, and blue color scheme would be "too cheesy" or something; so they pick the dullest shade of red they can find and try to have it on as few articles of clothing as possible.
What pisses me off is that there are probably people out there that glazes the fuck out of the Avengers game and genuinely thinks that "Erm ackshually, Avengers looks better 🤓"
The Avengers ones seem designed around normal people ,and not properly trained ones that keep training everyday and go around doing exceptional physical feats for a living.
To be fair, the bland standing pose in the avengers game characters is not helping them. Winter soldier and hulk are ok, mcu thor is also alright, base black panther is also ok, both iron man skin are ok too. The rest are laughable and insulting, like did they not see the movies/comics? That is so not how they are represented...
Even if they made it realistic. If these costumes/clothes from marvel rivals were transfered to the avengers realistic models. It would be an improvement and might even look awesome.
1:20 and 3:18 ngl Bashenga black panther and superior Ironman are the only skins I actually think look better in the avengers game then in marvel rivals. Especially superior iron man, as marvel rivals superior iron man is just a crappy recolor and doesn’t bother to give him his unique helmet
I think that the actual poses and movement of the characters in Marvel's Avengers is the major reason they look so dour and unimpressive, more than the actual designs of the costumes themselves. The Rival's characters are all made to have dynamic and heroic poses that best emphasize them being superheroes, whereas Avengers just looks like random people pulled off the street to do cosplay in the most uninterested way.
both are art styles btw.. just like American English has an accent. avenger games are bad because of something else...which you'd probably notice if you played them.. 1:19 This is why having competent artists/ concept art is so important Rivals has a complete concept, they clearly thought of what the character would need to sell a concept to the audience. Avengers just looks like a guy, I can't understand the concept and there are elements in the design that make little to no sense (i.e. the belt/ straps holding the chest piece) Honestly, the avengers team just didn't push the shape language and have a more robust colour palate, that's why in my opinion they failed so hard.
