It’s a shame for Swedish people of the first half of 19th century that a composer that wrote a Symphony like this 4th (“Naïve”) had his music “generally ignored during his lifetime” (as says Wikipedia), and had to make his living as an orthopedic surgeon, and later in his life had to work as the manager of a saw mill and of a glass factory. He never had the opportunity to hear a performance of none of his 3 last symphonies, and other of his works. They only existed in his mind, when he was composing.
I heard this symphony for the first time about 20 years ago, and by that time I discovered Berwald's music. Now I heard it at least once a week, from a live recording of Herbert Blomstedt and the San Francisco SO.
At least, 100 years after his death, Swedish people have repaired their mistake and he's considered today the greatest swedish composer of 19th century. In 1976 the new concert hall of Swedish Radio received the name of Berwaldhallen.

Jo jag tackar! Tidernas mest musikaliske ortopedtekniker! Andra satsen låter nästan som Brahms!🙏🏻🎹

This symphony represent for me the beauty and spiritual mystic in the nature in Sweden at the summer.

Discovered Berwald by chance on WCRB Boston in the summer of 1978. After all the years I still admire and respect this music. Look up the tone poems they are marvelous!

great symphony, especially repetiting motive of strings and wind section ( after 8:55 ) simple but at the same time exquisite and strong

Berwald's music is other-worldly. Even the music of the spheres would seem tawdry and garish in comparison.

    The nine symphonies of Beethoven
    are nice. The four symphonies
of berwald are even greater ❤❤

I consider the four symphonies of Berwald as masterpieces but I never understood why he felt the need to give them a surname. Nevertheless, I find them a bit conservative. Other scandinavian composers have more features of their own.

The surname of this actual symphony was withdrawn by Berwald himself.

What other composers of his time????

@@tomseaman9558 Maybe he's thinking his later near-contemporary, the Dane Niels Gade, who I like as well, but "features of [his] own"? Gade sounds much like Mendelssohn, an early influence. Berwald, on the other hand, strikes me as more a bit more original sounding.

As late as this was written it feels like it was influenced by Haydn and Mozart.
