What a underrated composer, history must be fair and he would get more recognition.

I've just stumbled across Berwald on TH-cam and am astonished at the wonderful warm sound of this concerto.

The opening notes in the Andantino sounds really ahead of it's time, almost jazzy, if only for a mere moment.

    Berwald had fresh, melodic ideas.

This is a very Schumann-tic piece. The performance gives it full justice.

An inspired work - that in some ways anticipates the monumental Brahms B Flat concerto...with beautiful sonorities and innovative orchestral touches

I'm in love with the art work of whoever did these masterpieces, (had to come from a museum some where in this world.) This composition is very unique. Wondering why the public radio stations haven't played this yet (at least I haven't heard this before).

It's "The Calumny of Apelles" by Botticelli, now in the Uffizi.

Brilliant : love his originality and unconventionality; a most singular composer. A nice break from the Austro-germanic.

I agree with your first sentence. But I couldn't find the term "Autro-germanic" on the internet. Do you mean Austro-German? During Berwald's lifetime there was no Germany. Assumed that you mean the diversity of composers (also the dead ones who's music was present) of the German-speaking territory around 1850: What breaks his music from theirs?

    Who hears Rach at 16:57-17:05?
Also reminds me of Pictures of an Exhibition. His piano concert sound at some points very modern to me, with elements of Late Romanticism. I'm sure you will like Hans Rott's symphony.

What a hugely stupid comment from Karl Leck. Try Berwald's four excellent symphonies. He's way ahead of his time and orchestrally revolutionary. Great melodic strands and themes . You find yourself recalling his musical ideas.

Franz Berwald was an extremely glifted composer. His four symphonies are excellent, as well as his chamber music and his opera Estrella de Soria. His concerto for piano is firmly written, the lesson of Beethoven has not be fogotten, the soloist does not focus the attention of all moments, as in too many poor concertos of that period. It seems to me nevertheless that there are some "chopinian' temptations' (long and singing melismatic soli which start ans stop too early) which the artist should give way to.. It is an excellent work indeed, but I do not put it in the highlights of the composer.

Don't you think it's happier to love music than girls?
You might say you hate it though.
I want to love music more than girls.
Because music doesn't betray me like a girl.
