Pierre Danican Philidor (1681 - 1731), belongs to a renowned family of French musicians; theirs surname was Danican, indicative of a Scottish origin (Duncan) to which the progenitor, Michel Danican (ca. 1600-1659), added Philidor when he was in the service of Louis XIII.
It seems that the king, having heard a concert by him, would have compared his style to that of a Sienese oboist, a certain Filidori.
Born in Paris, Pierre Danican Philidor is the son of Jacques "le Cadet" and brother of André Philidor "l'Aîné".
As an oboist and violinist, Pierre Danican Philidor is included among the members of the Grande Écurie of Louis XIV; of 1704 he is part of the Royal Chapel and in 1708 he integrates the Group of Violins of the King.
In 1712 he was appointed flautist of the King's Chamber and in 1714 he also got a job as gambist.
He died in Versailles in 1731.
His suites for two flutes and for flute and basso continuo were published in 3 volumes, but numbered as a single series of 12.
The first volume (published in 1717) contains suites 1 to 6, the second volume (published in 1718) suites 7 to 10 and the third (published in 1718) the last 2 suites.
In addition to these suites he also published in 1717 a volume containing 6 trios.
