One of the most enchanting and amazing symphonies I've heard. I wish I could find more like this.
An extraterrestrial told me that on his planet Stenhammar's first symphony is generally regarded as the greatest work of art ever created by a human. I said I never even heard of Stenhammar. So this ET fellow takes out a gizmo and plays the symphony for me. I'm listening to it, and after about 10 minutes I say "C'mon, man. You've got to be kidding me. This is our greatest work of art ever?" He took the gizmo away and said "I'm not a man! Idiot! Stenhammar is wasted on you fools." He left, and that was that.
I highly concur! We are so Canon-centric on this planet.

This symphony was rejected by Stennhammar as "too brucknerian". He found a new style leter on. Nevertheless, this symphony is quite intersting to discover, it is powerful and extremely well written. And the posterity kept it as "the first symphony of Stenhammar". Son, thank you for posting this intersting score.
It's really sad that composers feel the need to change their music based on the fact that is shares a similar style to another composer. Even though it shares similarities to Bruckner, the second movement has its own personality that I prefer over many of Bruckner's movements. Just think of what would have been lost if Ravel abandoned impressionist harmony early on if his peers told him it sounded too much like Debussy. There's way too much pressure in western art music to sound original and I think that stifles creativity. Originality is good, but if a composer can be expressive using an existing style then let them utilize it.
This is almost like a Bruckner symphony!
No one has done so much for Stenhammar as Neeme Järvi.

All this mumbling about Bruckner, this isn't a winetasting; " fruity notes and hints of oak". Maybe it's just people that should drink more wine, chill the analysis and just groove to the presentation. I think I'll just do my likes at the beginning, and not read the comments. For you listeners that appreciate this music and its presentation bless you for good taste and kindness. The rest of you should get together and create a society of mutual admiration so as to leave the rest of the civilized world alone. Maybe get a bunch, huge bunch of LEGOs to occupy your hands and mind so you can contain you vitriol through manual activity. This is beautiful music that sounds like the passion and talent of Stehammer put together to treat us to for a short period of sweetness and harmony.

This is probably due to a certain lack of impulse control, that some people believe they have to stick a label on the work for every spontaneous association and auditory memory. This simply turns it into a jigsaw puzzle that makes no sense.
I hear memories of Bruckner, Hans Rott, Brahms and Schumann throughout this. It definitely has some amazingly beautiful patches. I'd have to listen to it enough to know if it is of the caliber of the well known greats, but so far, even in the first movement, I have come across some very memorable passages.
Makes me sad that poor Rott only composed one symphony- and a magnificent one it was!

A totally unknown composer and here is one of the most beautiful symphonies of all time!!!
Pretty sure Stenhammar wasn't influenced by Hans Rott, as the latter's symphony was first performed in 1989, and Stenhammar did not study in Vienna where he might have been able to come across the unpublished score.
Interesting symphony, supressed by the composer as being not important yet although it might be a bit uneven, containing moments equal to any of the great composers of the late Romantic period. Deserves to be played more often! What a bonus to have the great Svetlanov conducting!

A bit like Bruckner, but it moves along with an entertaining style, rather than Bruckner, who stays still for an hour-and-a-half not saying anything.
A truly great symphony. I love it more, each time I hear it. The Symphony #2 is just as excellent. I'm going to have to rate those two as soon of my favorites.

Just discovered Stenhammar when I heard his Excelsior! Symphonic Overture on classical 91.7 in Houston. Just beautiful music!

Stenhammar died so relatively young (56). All his music is first rate. It is so unfortunate he did not get to compose more symphonies. As consolation there is, however, another great Swedish composer even more underperformed than Stenhammar: Kurt Atterberg. He composed some 9/10 symphonies and much other music, all first rate.
Not to forget Franz Berwald !

@@olavtryggvason1194 Yes of course, but Berwald wrote much erlier and could be interestly compared for instance to Schubert or Mendelssohn. In addition, he spent a great part of his life serving medecine with much talent, which was obviouly good for his contemporaries ' health, but such a loss for music ! He avoided the heavy symphonic romantism of Schumann and his orchetration wad light and attractive. In Scandinavia outside Sweden, Gade (and after him Svendsen and of course Nielsen) seem to me quite important. In addition, I am not sos ure that Erkki Melartin was Swedish - I think so.

Biographie
Il commence à apprendre le piano, entre à l'école de musique de Richard Andersson, travaille la théorie avec Joseph Dente et l'orgue avec Heintze et Lagerren. Puis il suit les cours de théorie avec Emil Sjörgren et Andreas Hallén. Après avoir étudié la musique à Stockholm, il part pour Berlin afin de perfectionner sa technique pianistique avec Karl Heinrich Barth (1892-93). Il fait alors des tournées de pianiste.
Il fait ses débuts de chef d'orchestre en 1897 en dirigeant son ouverture Excelsior !.
Il était dans sa jeunesse un fervent admirateur de la musique allemande, et particulièrement de celle de Richard Wagner et Anton Bruckner. Il s'est ensuite émancipé pour adopter un style « nordique », influencé par Carl Nielsen et Jean Sibelius. La symphonie nº 2 de Sibelius a été très importante pour Stenhammar.
De 1907 à 1922, il fut directeur artistique et chef d'orchestre de l'orchestre symphonique de Göteborg, le premier orchestre complètement professionnel de Suède. Il a également officié pendant une courte période en 1909 à l'Université d'Uppsala. Il eut parmi ses élèves le compositeur Hilding Rosenberg, l'un des précurseurs du modernisme en Suède.

Stenhammar ne l'a jamais plus fait rejouer de son vivant[1])
Symphonie no 2 en sol mineur, opus 34 (1911-15, création à Göteborg 22 avril 1915 sous la direction du musicien. De fait, la seule symphonie achevée reconnue par son auteur)

Fantastic symphony! Some Bruckner by moment. I really love it!
I owe so much to ALL CLASSICAL music 89.9 FM in Portland, Oregon for introducing to me so much wonderful music that I had never heard. This was one piece I heard around three years ago when COVID was appearing. I just love it for it's sublime moments of tranquility and well as the overall "subtle," for lack of a better word, energy the piece evokes. It reminds me of a magnificent sunrise.

This is a fantastic recording of Stenhammar's 1st Symphony. But one should be aware that the sound drops out after about 15 minutes in the 1st movement. This lasts about 8 seconds.

30:22: Bruckner´s 7th.
It sure does sound like Bruckner, esp. about 10:00. What is the painting? Looks like the upper section of Niagara Falls, the place that few tourists get to see.
Stenhammar is the greatest swedish composer and "experts" clasified him a stept over Sibelius, Grieg and Nilssen.
Don't miss his two piano concertos and his Fantasy i B minor for piano.
There is a blip at: 14:50 which could maybe be looked into.
I am in agreement with other reviewers here; the fact that Stenhammar felt the symphony was too Bruchnerian does not detract from its positives. Sounding like someone doesn't mean you are someone else. Plaudits to Stenhammar for striving for a distinctive voice but to virtually disown this work is sad.

The horn section seems a bit more assured than those on the live recording I have with Jeervi and the Gothenburg. Regrettably the nimble to-and-fro in the woodwind is just as imprecise here as there 5:10. Svetlanov's idea of andante in the second movement is more like lento or adagio. But this is a great romantic work and i can listen happily to any number of performances.
Just think of the luxiourous moment you have that you can compare recordings of which none is bad!!
I can see why the composer thought this symphony trivial; non of the ideas have a real bite; although it's masterly composed. Thank our lucky stars he wrote his second!
The second is a real masterpiece! Have you heard Blomstedt's interpretation which you can listen to on the web?
Yes there is no doubt his 2nd symphony is his masterpiece but that is no reason to put down the 1st. I couldn't give a damn about it being a bit "Brucknerian", it's overall an enjoyable work and in the end that's the purpose of music anyway.
I hear a lot of Bruckner 7 at around the 30:00 mark. Still, a lovely piece.

Bruckner and Brahms were his inspiration, though he went off in another direction soon after this wonderful work :-(
He was blast away by Sibelius!! The reason he withdrew the whole work!! He was sure that the new nationalism was the way to go!! Hence his second symphony. But wait!! His serenade isn't that much far out this musical language!

the stenhammar first piano concerto is similar. also try the glazunov symphonies (no 1 & 5) , the korngold symphony are all beautiful romantic works.
Try the excellent symphonies nos. 3 and 4 by Alberic Magnard. They are different for sure but first class music in every way with amazing orchestration. Another unjustly neglected composer.

As far as the Swedish (or Nordic) composers, the symphonies of Kurt Atterberg are simply gorgeous, melodic and emotional works
I also found I like Hugo Alfven.
Quite interesting Symphony neglected by the same composer that would have been less brucknerian in the second, in a more scandinavian tune. He seems to be quite on the same level of Alfven as a Symphonist, but his best to me are the Piano concertos, really beautiful. Svetlanov is always a plus.

I prefer the 2nd symphony.
Stenhammear is a wonderful composer. But too seldom performed in concert halls. It is a great symphony but as he wrote himself: too Anton Bruckner like. He found a more personal path later on.
But to be too Bruckner... is the best of this...!

Er soll zwar die Symphonie zurückgezogen haben, jedoch hat er die Partitur gottlob nicht zerstört (im Gegensatz zu Sibelius, der seine Achte bekanntlich verbrannte).
Anderen Quellen zufolge hatte Sibelius seine achte Symphonie nicht fertiggestellt, sondern zerstörte nur die Entwürfe, welche aber schon relativ weit gediehen waren

C’est comme si l’on entrait dans un de ces palaces d’Europe centrale à l’architecture pâtissière style religieuse au chocolat. Dans chaque pièce où l’on pénètre, les individus sont habillés en noir et blanc des pieds à la tête. Ils ont cette étrange absence dans les yeux tout en vous regardant fixement. Les plafonds sont peints, le mobilier d’un luxe indescriptible et le marbre veiné des tables reflète l’évanescente sérénité de l’endroit ! Tout y est rigide, jusqu’au temps qui s’écoule derrière les lambris, comme aux aguets 🕌
Quel est vraiment votre avis sur cette symphonie ? Trop empesée ..., conventionnelle ?
