Hey bud in the situation that you are throwing down to any base, have momentum going towards the base before you are ready to throw just for a stronger and quicker throw.
Solid receiving, good blocking, awesome swing. I think the weak spot is throwing to bases. In my opinion long toss could be a game changer for you, it's old school but it works. Put your emphasis on getting great backspin, don't be afraid to lengthen your arm out a bit as opposed to going straight to your ear. Another idea that I believe would help, is to focus on driving your nose to the base you're throwing to, as goofy as it sounds it could really help your game. With that said I believe the swing is the potential money maker. Great luck to you brother, nothing like being a catcher. Keep up the good work in the classroom as well, that's great stuff. Here's a little video you might enjoy, I think it's a great seed to plant for catchers that wanna be elite receivers th-cam.com/video/m55T_ywCE2Y/w-d-xo.html
Really try to anticipate the pitch when receiving, starting from a low point makes this much easier. On your throwing footwork, start getting your front side moving before the ball gets to you. It'll shave that 2.04 to a 1.95 easily. Weight and momentum are huge parts of throwing to bases. Great chest angle on your blocking, try not to lose so much ground on the ball by either falling straight to your knees to meet the pitch or making sure you don't jump back when kicking your feet out. Nice job though! Plenty of time to grow and fix those little things.
Jalen, I see this is video from this year, so if you still tune in to these comments, I see on your throwing arm that your elbow appears to be down causing you to 'short-arm' your throws. That doesn't allow you to get the most velocity on tnrows and I saw your throws arcing down, losing steam early before the bag. Maybe you could have someone who knows catching watch this video kr you in-person and see if that person notices same. If you correct that, your time will drop 'cause you'll get more on throws, better carry, and hopefully accurate carry to the covering fielder. Throwing elbow-down short-arming usually catches up over time with soreness/injuries. Keep working, good luck.
Here are thing you could improve on. When you catch, the mitt has to be steady. When you caught the ball, it was moving slightly backwards. When you do blocking, you should try to make more air in the chest protector, so it wont bounce off too much. and try to put your upper body higher. While throwing the ball you should put your legs to the way you are trying to throw before the ball comes to you. It takes you while to get the ball and throw it. other wise your good
Receiving looks good. Only 3 things I'd say you can get better at is 1. The amount of ground you gain for throw downs to 2nd is way too much, which mean your feet are slow, which mean the runner gets more time to close the gap. Go to 3:08. You gains a solid 2-3 feet with your back foot. Now go to this vid a little before the 3 minute mark and watch Lucroy and Chirinos th-cam.com/video/DK7Dihs5Ggk/w-d-xo.html . they gain about 6 inches to a foot MAX with their back foot. Quicker feet means quicker release, which means the ball gets there quicker. Something that will help with this is catching the ball deeper. Go to the 3:08 mark again and watch how far you receive the ball out in front of you. We're looking at a good 2 feet at least out in front of your body and your arm is nearly fully extneded. Now go back to that vid of Chirinos and you'll see he's consistently catching that with his elbow bent and about a foot max out in front of his body. When you reach that far for the ball, your feet are going to follow and gain too much ground. The tricky part is generating the same amount of power while gaining less ground. Gotta really use your hips to throw coming out of the squat. The 2nd thing is that when you go to throw to any base, it's more a catch, pause and then go. You do a better job in the side view when it gets to the 3:03 mark but before that from the 2:30 - 3:00, if you slow it down, you can see that when you're about to receive it, you'd haven't started coming out of your squat yet. Watching Lucroy, Chirinos, Yadi, whoever you want and you'll see that as they are about to receive the ball, they're starting to come out of their squat. Lastly, your set ups for throw downs. Your chest is pretty upright. It's ok to be a bit higher in your squat with your legs with a runner on base, but you should lean a bit more forward with your torso so w're a bit lower. Again look at all the other catchers. They're a bit lower. Hope this helps kid and keep grinding. Let me know if you have any questions.
Agreed. Gaining way too much ground on his throw. Front foot should be behind home plate in the crotch of the V. His throwing motion takes too much time.
To get your hips into your throws more stay lower throughout the entire process. You stand straight up, takes to much time. That was a well done scouting report on your abilities.
On your throw downs you need to stay down not basically stand up. You have to stay down long enough for the pitch to be seen by the ump so he doesn’t f over your pitcher. And you need to stick pitches not drag them for good frames. Other than that pretty solid
hey jalen one thing i'd recommend is to try and keep that left elbow in the same plane/height while receiving. your set up target should be at the lowest part of the zone and there is no need for you to lift your elbow up during your windup phase. that will just make it more difficult to stick/frame the low strikes. your elbow coming = glove going down. as a pitcher and umpire, i wouldn't want to see my catcher give the "picking" motion because that tells me you're bringing a ball into the strike zone. whoever your coach is that works on receiving needs to emphasize forearm pronation, supination to stick those pitches.
In his groin? That's one of the best spots for it lol your fingers are tucked in a fist and protected and the only thing that's gonna get hit is his knuckles that you would use to punch someone (aka the most durable part of the hand)
Knuckles are easy to break as well. Fighters break their knuckles all the time. Besides that, there are so many other places to put your throwing hand that are much more protected. I do agree that the knuckles are the most durable part of the hand but that isn't saying much because the hand in general is brittle.
I giv him a good 5 out of 10. And just bcuz he doesnt put his right hand back if he did he would earn da 6..u cant really use it much if it gets hit suddenly by a wild ball
wao i"ve been catching for 4 years and all the "wild balls " you are talking about it went foul or hitted my helmet at the most times nothing was close to my hand no to my chest protector . Like who the fuck swings on a low pitch that is in the dirt almost and not just going to seing at it it becomes a foul and goes backwards straigth into me like.... impossible to hit your hand
Alot of good things there Jalen but the pitching machine isn't going to help you those pitches are automatic from the machine and are always in same spot nothing like live pitching for a catcher
I AM KAZIE MLB catchers use these same drills. These are used to work on mechanics. Master the basics and you will fair a lot better in real situations. Also im pretty sure the team does live scrimmages during practice.
89 mph down to second.....no way that throw is arcing like 5 feet. Might not even be 80. Dont drop your arm down to your waist keep it up high. When u transfer u should be crossing the front of your face with glove and throwing hand. Then bring it to your ear and throw. Short and quick for a better pop time. Work on your footwork. Framing u need to move your body with the pitch the more arm movement the umpire sees he is gonna think a ball. Good luck but go to a juco first and get some good solid coaching and catching
Mate this is the fakest thing I’ve ever heard ok so hi instead of Hi here’s my email address and plus you can’t just do that he’s like 15 so that’s not allowed so shut up
good thing he knows exactly where the pitch is going to be everytime
ROBERT these are basic catcher’s drills. MLB catchers use these same exact drills. This is just working mechanics.
@@mauricecooper9016 agreed. I was j playing hes a gr8 catcher. Surprised I got this many likes 🤣
That pitching machine has a nasty curve ball 😂
Solid D3 catcher
5.2 GPA but a 25 on the ACT
Ethan Bates smells like a high school that gives test that should be given to 4th graders lololol
Ethan Bates some people just aren’t good test takers.
Ethan Bates LOLOL thought the same 🤣
Great job only thing I recommend is to do solid drills on your transfer everything else is good but that and your pop time great job

He can hit 👌
Your're gonna lose that right hand if you keep it there behind the plate
That's actually a little league thing. U need to keep ur hand there so if a guy is stealing second then u can get ur hand up faster

I was wondering if you'll even comment back what size glove do you think it good for a high school catcher
Adobso anywhere from 32.5 to 34 just depends on if you like a smaller or bigger glove
I used a 33 freshman year and now i used a 34 as a sophomore but i have big hands. I’ve committed to Oklahoma as my credentials on info

I agree with all of that but that is stuff coaches can teach. All of the pieces are there they just need to be put together

There is a few things you could work on but the thing that really points out is you need to put your right hand behind your back
No you can put it there but It has to go under your chest protector
5.2 GPA. On what scale? Never heard of that.
typo for sure
Les Yarbrough Lmfao😂😂
He is taking honors or AP classes
5.2 GPA and 25 on ACT??
It’s possible: AP, honors, and online classes add to GPA.
This kid going to the mlb for sure

All americans catchers put the right hands behind of the glove, the latín catchers puts his hands on back and protect so your wrist.
Better do something with that right hand. Not a good place for it.
Misconception
In his groin? That's one of the best spots for it lol your fingers are tucked in a fist and protected and the only thing that's gonna get hit is his knuckles that you would use to punch someone (aka the most durable part of the hand)
It’s because he’s a boy and he’s covering the groin and it would hit his knuckles (most song part of the hand) so his groin wouldn’t get hit
Knuckles are easy to break as well. Fighters break their knuckles all the time. Besides that, there are so many other places to put your throwing hand that are much more protected. I do agree that the knuckles are the most durable part of the hand but that isn't saying much because the hand in general is brittle.
Put it behind your leg in that place is only to do the symbol to your pitcher
Nice looks good.I am gonna be a ten year old catcher
Catch - DAT - Ball same
Solid D3
Ok D2
The pop time just won’t cut it
Nah man he can go too a d1 for sure there’s only like 2 things he needs to work on
I make little kids Mad exit velocity to low too
Ryan Spalliero yea he can work in stuff and he’s got a bat for sure
My recommendation is get rid of the know savers
Chase Burris why’s that?
The pitches should be mixed up so he doesn’t know
