I went to the comments to say this exact thing. I've seen plenty of groups where the person without a crown on their head was more helpful to a new player than the person with one
To be fair, for those of us who are mentors, there isn't much incentive to actually act as mentors when you want to help sprouts play their job right and the KINDEST response you get is "this isn't my main, I'm just leveling it". I've resigned to doing most of my mentor roulettes without much input, and only speaking up if I think my advice will be heeded (of course, I'm not always a good guesser).
I hate guildhests, just find them too boring to even bother farming coms for them. I enjoy a lot of the dungeons from the game to begin with, so ill get my coms that way. My problem is; I want to become a mentor, but at the same time I don't because some people don't accept advice and act hostile to you, which I feel is a dampener on becoming a mentor. Of course it will happen, but it just seems more often than not.
I learned about people comm farming guildhests a while back and decided that if I want the crown, I'm gonna get the 1500 comms the legit way first , then do those.
If you play support classes and put a bit of effort into your portrait, it will genuinely not take too long. I've gotten all the commendation achievements with, 2 years of play.
@tarecalibrav1642 still comm regardless, but for under the armour specifically I always give it to a dps. Especially if they don't have a job stone yet.
There is another group of people who are farming guildhests, though I doubt it's the reason these people were. But "The Last Resort" title requires 100 guildhests completed, and the achievement "Enreptured Servitude" requires 200 guildhest completions. If we assume people will do 2000 mentor roulettes for a mount, and since Cider Spider is proving people are out there who will achieve anything if it's an "achievement" then, there are some people who are doing guildhests for these too. Offering an alternative to comm farming, but that's also because I didn't even try to get commendations - I just play as a support main and get commended by default anyways XD
There is another similar reason to spam guildhests. You have to complete EVERY one to unlock mentor roulette. Therefore, if you want to unlock mentor roulette and have mostly ignored guildhests up to that point, you will be queuing for ALL of them one-by-one. That may not have been the case here. I'll be honest that when I get guildhests in mentor roulette, I look for someone that doesn't have battle mentor and comm them, hoping that they grind comms so that I can get faster mentor roulettes myself.
That is a possibility, and if I had landed sequentially in different guildhests whenever the same name popped up I would've been more likely to suspect that possibility! But the fact it was usually the same names associated with spamming a specific one, it seemed unlikely to be the case! And yes I can see the upside to getting guildhests if you're more interested in just getting the mentor roulettes over with. You can probably understand I have a split interest because while I do want to do that, I also want to have fun, *and* of course I brought a camera, it is more fun if something exciting happens! 😂
Also to note there is an achievement and a title for clearing 200 guildhests, which gives The Last Resort title. Which I use ironically enough. I'm not sure how many of my commendations I got doing guildhests, I'm sitting at 2462 currently. But I know for a fact that I crossed the 1500 line by doing ARR and HW relics sync'd on tank and healer jobs.
Since there’s pretty much nothing to comment about, I’d like to share an experience I had earlier today that reminded me of the one with the 10+ raise Kugane Ohashi. I leveled my SGE to 100 and wanted to practice, so I queued for trials roulette and got the Interphos with I think 4 first timers. It turned out to be by FAR my most stressful fight as a healer, the DPS were failing pretty much every mechanic. The fight took 15 minutes and we had a total of *24 DEATHS.* There were some moments where I was using swift+rez literally on cooldown lol
@@CaetsuChaijiCh Yep, twice lmao I was lucky our tanks and my co healer knew what they were doing, I died once to bad timing with the tracking drone thingys, MT died twice, and the DPS died 21 times 💀 There was a RPR who just did not seem to learn any mechanic at ALL. They died 8 times and I was considering just leaving them on the ground lol
I earned my 1500 commendations just by playing the game. Although I started as tank I always told people I was new and asked for advice. A lot of people were willing to help me. I eventually got better by playing the game normally. Commendations are not hard to get just don’t be a jerk, play your jobs well, and you’ll get there in time. Those people spamming under the armour annoy me it’s the status they want without any of the effort to actually earn or learn along the way. If thats how they approach life as well I truly feel sorry for them.
Chill DPS main here. After 4 years of playing I'm barely reaching 1100. Not spamming duties doesn't help me, for sure. But the fact that I got like 300+ (400+?) comms in Frontlines, which I only started occasionnaly touching 1.5 years ago, tells another story about "you'll get there in time". From my experience (and those of two friends, one maining tank and the other healer), comms are simply not a DPS thing. (full disclosure : I main PAL in Frontlines) The whole irony of it all is that I always try my best in every duty (still getting a bunch of vuln, because I'm a slow learner like that^^) and I genuinely want to become a mentor to help people (I'm better at teaching than I am at applying what I learn^^).
It's really not that serious. It's a game, it's silly to extrapolate assumptions about other people's lives just because they're trying to do an in-game grind marginally faster.

Sure, mentors are intended to help out with "game knowledge" or whatever but I legitimately can't remember the last time anyone with Mentor crown was actually helpful and not just playing the game for themselves too. It's just an ego thing, even for the people with the "real" crown. It makes no real difference for 99% of players if you're not in the sprout network. The game's been out for almost two decades now, there's thousands of hours of helpful guides and content available.
For those looking to complete as many mentor roulette duties as efficiently as possible, they would absolutely love getting under the armor several times in a row. For the same reason that getting msq roulette dungeon in mentor feels bad since you are spending much more time for the same reward.
Once I got close to my 1500 commendations I realized if I wanted the roulette I would need to do all of the guildhests, so I did them all at once. I got the same healer 3 or 4 times in a row, and there were definitely other recurring characters. I felt a bit bad for sucking up mentors for an hour
Well the key difference here is that there was a clear goal and you were getting somewhere. When I see the same person spamming under the armor for 2+ hours I think "I can't get anything else until you're done, and I don't know when you're done!!!" 😅 Yours made perfect sense!
The point of mentor roulette is to backfill queues for people trying to do specific content, and you had a perfectly good reason to be running through that content. I can't speak for anyone else but I don't mind getting guildhests to help out people who are trying to actually complete guildhests, for whatever reason! It's the comm farmers who spam the same one over and over and over that get irritating.
I went over the data from my mentor roulettes during endwalker again and came to a few more conclusions: Low level dungeons are heavily weighted towards tank and healer (especially healer) but as you go higher in level numbers even out over time, up to expert dungeons which actually seemed weighted towards dps a little bit. Extreme trials actually seemed to have a roughly equal chance between all three roles while normal raids were highly dps-favoured. And guildhests, apparently, also heavily weighted towards dps. For some reason.
guildhests being weighted towards dps makes sense since the people spamming them for comms will logically go tank/healer to be more likely to get the comm, also their queue is probably faster on support so if they are farming them that also makes sense to use.
I want a lot of guildhests lol, surprisingly rare for me lately. I was, however, surprised to see Anamnesis Anyder yesterday. Post-shb dungeons just come rarely in general
Based on my recent results, my recommendation if you want guildhests is like... The afternoon, preferably before daily reset. Based on others accounts dps might also be more likely to land you there!
Not sure if this is just on oceania thing with our low player counts, but it's very common that new players get first time duty completions by putting pf listings asking for help, because duty finder queue times get too long as you get higher in levels. So when I want to jump into parties with whatever new player needs help (the point of mentor roulette), I end up going into duties with pre formed parties, where commendations can't be handed out. If I hadn't naturally gotten the commendations I needed before getting around to doing the dawntrail role quests, I probably would have started commendation farming because that requirement was becoming a tougher bottleneck the more I actually helped people. Not that I think the requirement being there is a bad thing. Forcing out most newer players who haven't built up the commendations and incentivising people to do roulettes on support roles to get more commendations are probably necessary evils.
Had I gotten into this kind of mentor roulette hell, I would've stopped around halfway. I just don't have the endurance for doing guildhests over and over. And it's also because of this I have to commend Cae for going through with this. 👍But yes, the most likely reason people spam guildhests is because of possibly getting fast commendations, and I can attest to that. I got 1500 commendations for my alt not long ago, and I'm in the process of unlocking mentor roulette for her. But I hadn't even opened guildhests for her, so I had to. And most of the time, when I did them as Paladin, I got full 3 commendations from them.
I’ve been stuck in guildhest hell before. Not because someone was comm farming but because I was offered 5 mil to run guildhests for an hour and a half. Good times… for my wallet, that is.
dang , that is insane ... i've done maybe 3 guildhests in over 1.2k hours of playtime ... i feel bad for mentors now, truly i do .... Hang in there , and heres a sacrifice for lord algorythm in a form of a like and a comment
Didn't know about guildhests until I wanted to unlock mentor roulette xD But sorry that you had to go through this. Hopefully the thought that many other mentors experience this too helps a bit cause we can share the pain. Had this once too, at some point the healer and I were just comming each other for like half an hour, was kinda funny! Cause like you said, it's their choice to spam this and we can't do anything about it
Oh I know it's a universal thing! I have a friend who just leaves if he sees a guildhest, the 30 minute punishment being the time needed to recover from that pain anyway 🤣
You can definitely break free form guildhest prison by switching to tank or healer. Tank and Healer are often very much in need for leveling content. So even with DPS spamming guildhests there will be moments where some leveling dungeon has higher priority. Also a guildhest still needs two DPS, so one DPS farming commendations still means you can get into their duty, where if you play tank and another tank queues up it means you will not get into his group. As a DPS in mentor roulette you often just fill into content where DPS can become rare, which is mostly raids, trials and guildhest. Which leads to in my experience way better variety if you play DPS, since tanks and healers get a lot of dungeons but can cause these very biased days of only guildhests if multiple players decide to farm commendations while you a e doing your roulettes.
28? O.o In a Row? And I felt unlucky with 6 in a row. My "Record" during the grind were 15 Guildheist out of 25 Duties. Best of luck to not having it happen again to that extend. Ending those with Job specific fun facts is great
This reminds me that I wish they would just make the challenge logs for GHs be 3 and 7 respectively. I dont see a reason why it has to be 10 when there isnt much incentive to do them. So 7 would be a nice weekly reward for doing it daily rather than incentivising spamming 10 all at once which is what I started doing cause I still have so many jobs to level >.>;; TIL tho that there are first time bonuses for *every* job up through stormblood? I had no idea. Not that I feel a pressing need to do that though, lol.
Yeah that bonus for all those jobs seem so ridiculous! Maybe on your first few jobs the bonus would be nice (especially the cash!) but after that it seems kind of silly!
It's crazy to me DPS will nearly always get Guildhests when queueing for Mentor roulette. Just shows that lots of new tanks and healers starting the game. Also, I can acutely relate to the /fume emote from the thumbnail LOL!
It is quite wild! I have had issues with guildhests even as tank and healer too, so it is also possible it's times of day or week but I don't really know! 😅
Been an achievement hunter since I started playing a year ago, and only started getting a lot of comms recently because I've been leveling up all the healers. I might not be a mentor, I might not be dedicated enough to actually teach people about stuff, but I do try to help when I can. And honestly, I think that's what a mentor should have more than just a straight "1500 comms"
1:20 I believe the skip was fixed in DT. I've had them do this both solo and with parties and every time they follow now. I think they couldn't go into the vent before, now they can.
Honestly if you have to farm comms, you're a bad player. An alt I made last October that is in the patch content for Stormblood has over a thousand comms. Not my primary alt that I'm developing for raiding, just a "what's it like being a lalafell" alt that I barely play.
Haha! 😂 It is complicated, because I can understand some players who are actually good are somehow having trouble getting comms. What the exact problem is, is hard to say, but I imagine the most common problem for them is "if you are mainly doing content with friends, there's no one to comm you." and "if you mainly do content with friends who are visibly slightly better than you, it might be difficult for you to stand out more". Weird things like that! 😅 I imagine your lalafell mainly does content with randoms through duty finder? 😊
any reason i would spam guildhests for comms would be if my alts sprout was about to fall of and get mentor and be able to stay in NN chat. but i would still not do it, bcs doing trade mentor is way easier and imo actually would be more fun.
Interestingly, depending on one's level-range, a lot of those spamming for commendations would only ever get sent into certain guildhests, and if those guildhests in turn give very little XP, they could essentially "level hold" for a ridiculously long amount of time while farming commendations. Now whether or not that's a productive use of one's time versus obtaining commendations "naturally"... that's up to them to decide, lol. Personally I do guildhests for the weekly challenges, as I find it useful for leveling jobs that I don't care to play in group content otherwise (so pretty much all tanks and healers + Black Mage), and even *then* I only do the 3rd and 10th ones as the job I'm leveling, otherwise I do the rest on some other DPS to minimize the amount of time I spend tanking/healing/being Black Mage, lol.
I admittedly only run the mentor roulette just for the mount but I do also give helpful tips and encouragement on dutys when necessary. That being said, I'd very much enjoy getting all of those guild hests back-to-back
The thing i feel about guildhests is that a few of them posit somewhat interesting ideas that then are just NEVER relevant again. Or some of the original idea, especially the first few, are meant as training(before we got that Brand New training stuff), but then they teach either irrelevant or actually wrong information. Also, I'm about to actually start my mentor roulette farm after years of just thinking about it, and have made a spreadsheet to track all my duties, because data is fun.
Indeed, this could be nice, if they updated the guild hests to actually demonstrate what they meant to teach, and also maybe updated to something more... Modernly relevant! Also good luck on your journey!
My very last day of mentor roulettes I got Under the Armor 10 times in a row with the same sage farming comms who just afk'd the whole time. Not even a single dosis. Absolutely enraging.
I just did A2N yesterday and I can confirm the sniper skip works exactly the way it always did. I have no idea why the snipers jumped down with you, that's bizarre.
Odd, because I got that raid recently and the skip didn't work. In fact, the snipers eventually followed me (tank holding the aggro) into the sealed room
If you organize players without a party, then running guild-hests st the same time, you queue up pretty reliable with each other and you can give recoms to each other. This would make it a fast way to farm recoms. (This is just a guess)
Yea that would work. There's even a thought that maybe some players pay others to spam guildhests specifically so they increase the likelihood or some such... But I can't be sure on that one! 😅
Another perspective on commendation farming. I’ve been playing actively since somewhere in the middle of Shadowbringers. In that time, I’ve played more roulettes as healers than anything else. I’m still something like 400 commendations off 1500. Getting them “normally” could take me another 6+ months. Or, I could just finish all the other requirements, and then spend a couple of days farming guildhests. Seems like a pretty easy choice.
Sounds like it was a group of friends that were queueing for the GuildHests as solos to be put together to be able to com each other. At least this is my guess, unsure exactly how queueing works but this is my guess. I... don't know what to say about the whole idea. Feel like as long as the people in question are able to help actual sprouts in the future it isn't the worst thing at least.
I only give recommendations if the players have achieved something. For example, saying hello at the beginning. That is quite an achievement for some. 🙃
The only reason I might ever spam Guildhest roulette is for the Challenge Log to complete 10 of those for some decent EXP on your job. Outside of that I don't bother with them lol
There is another actual possibility. There is an achievement for doing 200 guildhests. Perhaps some of them were going for that achievement. Also I've been playing for 2 and a half years and I still have yet to meet the mentor quota of 1500 coms. I've been trying my best to help in duties regardless, but I've actually had times where people discarded my advice due to "only being a crafting mentor". I don't think these people would have listened even if I had the regular crown, but it is frustrating.
To your crafting mentor advice: no those players just looked for a reason to not listen. If you had a full mentor crown they would possibly had looked at some other reason 😰
I was bored to death with Guildhests from the very start. My Alt will never be a Mentor, but she'll also never have to queue into a Guildhest, the Dorne Chimera, or a fight where Greg turns you into a chicken or Ultros turns you into an imp for 40% of the encounter.
My problem with the spamming of guildhest isn’t the fact people are doing it as I’m in a situation where I would probably have to to unlock mentor roulette it in the month. The problem I have with it is that 1500 commendations is way more of a problem for certain players over another. I am a mainly dps player and sometimes tank player and I don’t touch healer cause I’m really bad with it and I don’t have fun player healer all that much. This culminates in an issue where I’ve been playing since the start of endwalker and done probably tens of thousands of duties at this point. Most of my time is in savage and ultimate now probably though and you get nothing for those. Probably for the best but I’m in a spot where after so many normal duties from roulettes I have 1200/1500 and now in a rut of if I want to do mentor roulette I now have to spam duties and path of least resistance is of course the most tempting. I maybe have gotten 20 commendations since the start of dawntrail and it sucks to be put in this spot as tank and healer always get the most comms usually. Honestly being able to hand out more than one comm per instance in like 8 or 24 people duties could help a lot but that’ll probably still only go to tank and healer for the most part. Main reason I say all this is cause I can’t blame people for doing it and those who aren’t ready for mentor should be shamed I don’t think it’s good to shame all players who do it.
I kind of wonder if they actually were doing them to farm commendations, if they were in a party of 3 taking the fastest guildhest probably isn't going to cancel out the loss of 2 potential commendations per run. Gotta give it to them though, whatever they were doing they have an insane amount of patience.
That's the thing, I imagine there were so many spamming that it was a coincidence they kept landing in the same duties! I don't think they were grouped! 🤔😂
The problem there is there's only two options on EU and I happen to know light isn't exactly much different in that particular aspect - although maybe in retrospect switching in the moment could have helped! 😅
After seeing the that trick on how folks farm for commendations to get mentor. It's easy to see how there's so many fake mentors around. Just did a MSQ roulette yesterday with a "Mentor" Ninja with a Returner Ninja and throughout the dungeon they're doing nothing but spam Doton and Huton on the bosses. As a ninja main, it was painful to watch.
I enjoy doing mentor roulettes (not even to get the achievements or mount) but have several alts and want to be able to do it on all of them. I'm on my 4th character on the road to mentor eff trying to get it naturally at that point lol although, i can only handle spamming guildhests for maybe 30 mins before I get mega bored, then just spam trials roulette as tank or healer 🤷 I mean, I've gotten thousands of comms naturally so..... I'm allowed right? 😅
They have had the same requirements for mentor for a while, i personally would like to see an extra thing added so that mentors are actually people who want to help out other players and not just do it for funny crown
@@CaetsuChaijiCh could have an achievement required for it that is a couple of hundred runs of each roulette for battle mentor, have to do specific crafts that are difficult and require knowledge of crafting as a whole, lastly add a pvp mentor where you need to run a bunch of frontlines and CC to get. i think these would require the person to be semi competent to atleast get mentor, issue is when it comes to people who have played a long time as it would happen naturally but you would think at that time they would be able to help newer players
This is ALL I've been getting and it's so fucking annoying. No matter which class I choose, no matter what time of day I do them, I've been getting those stupid guildheist ones.
Quite frustrating! Something I've had a bit of success with is doing my mentor roulettes closer to after the daily reset - doesn't always work, and may also need to be earlier in the weekly lockout, but hey, maybe it helps! 😕
I don’t have much interest in becoming a mentor but I get wanting to farm for comms “artificially”. I have maybe 4-5k hours in ffxiv over 10 years and still lack the needed commendations. I think I need 2-300 more? I raid savage and ultimates but the thing to realize is that you generally only get comms if you play tank/healer since they’re further up on the comm list. It also seems easiest to fetch comms if you only say greetings at the start/end of a duty instead of trying to assist/converse with the party members via chat. Most of the issue is there’s only 4 tanks and 4 healers so once they’re leveled I generally only run roulettes on dps since tbh they’re more fun to do casual content on and there’s way more to level up. If I do ex roulette on my healer main jobs instead it’s easy to get 1-2 comms a run but it’s way too easy to be enjoyable plus I max all the healers out within a month or 2 and don’t enjoy doing roulettes for no reward. In general I would say the mentor system is broken and most mentors don’t actually have an interest in teaching/helping or even better game knowledge. It’s good the system exists to help queue times on less popular content but on days like these is it really working as intended
As someone with almost 6000 commendations, grinding guildhests for those seems silly. Also like you said, while getting noting but guildhest may be a bad day for content, its still a good day for progression on the mentor mount grind. lol
Ngl, I feel like Im one of the few people that doesnt enjoy getting guildhests in mentor roulette. I just wanna get any content that doesn’t die in less than a minute ;w;
I see it this way, the less commendation i give to Under the Armor spammers the fastest i finish farming Astrope. In my opinion commendations are reserved for extraordinaryly good behaviour or in its absense to the portrait i like most (if i like any).
What were you saying last Mentors video? Hahaha But yeah, this is basically why I almost never Comm a Tank or Healer in a guild hest unless they are a sprout. First, there's pretty much nothing a tank or healer can do in a guild hest that is really, truly Comm worthy and, second, because far too often they're just using them to farm Comms anyway (and I'd rather not encourage that behaviour)
Guildhests are used by bots and multiboxed accounts to efficiently grind comms and, of course, mentor roulette. Far more common on Dynamis but it happens.
If you mean my outfit, I use classic spectacles, casual jacket, skallic bottoms of aiming, and replica sky pirates shoes of healing, all dyed cherry pink (except the glasses!). The scarf is a ribbon from thornmarch ex. If you mean the cat boi at the start i cannot help you though! 🤣
I'm only at like 1300ish commendations. Since I've been on Dynamis for a while and prior to DT dropping you just didn't Queue for stuff, you used PF exclusively since the server population was so small. But you can't give commendations in PF groups (or any premade party). I probably would have more than 1.5k by now if it weren't for that, but I've no real interest in being a mentor. I mostly play by ear and have a hard time typing in game, so I can't really give effective advice.
Ok, now I feel like a bad person. I want you to get more Under the Armor, just to see how much you can distord the name over and over. But let's hope for your sake next session will be a bit more untertaining.
Dude, I recently completed the 2000 grind... And 28 Guildhests in a row seems like bragging instead of a bad day. Especially with the other 2 being Normal Raids, typically a quick clear. DPS is definitely the faster and more efficient Mentor grinder. But that is because he tends to get filled on those people grinding out comms on guildhests. While that is boring it's also very efficient and when you're at 1800 it becomes a godsent...
Yeah I get that! 😂 I suppose the fact I'm not even that focused on getting the achievement progress means I just go "aw that's boring!" and forget the efficiency part! 🤣

But when you're running like 20 Mentor Roulettes a day, every day to get that done before Dawntrail drops... There was days it took me 4hrs to get the 20. Hell, some days I had to do 40 because it was maintenance the next day, I would be so happy if 28 of those were Guildhests...
honestly... ive been playing for just under a year, and i almost have 3k comms - and my best guess why, is cuz my name is goofy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i dont blame people for doing guildhests, cuz i know most of my comms come from my characters name being "Good Manman" and i think people get a bit of a chuckle out of it - not everyone wants to have a goofy name or cosplay as a well known character for comms and thats fair - but god guildhests are dull lol
I would actually be pretty curious to see how fast you end up accruing commendations by spamming Under the Armour. I can't imagine it's that fast, since you don't actually do anything in that guildhest that would make people want to commend you more than anyone else in your party. I guess as a tank, if you're near the start of the week and people haven't completed their weekly Exercising the Right yet so they're just blindly commending every tank they party with, no matter what? Still, seems incredibly mind-numbing and dull, not to speak of pointless.
maybe they are farming GC Seals too, from adventurer in need, since it's 1 minute long for a few hundred, and the alternative is the leveling which give 10x more but takes 15~20 minutes.. Efficiency wise, i think GH would be better, although way more boring.

I have reached almost 6k commends on my main (my mentor), 1400+ on two alts and 300+ on 4 others. NEVER ONCE have I spammed guildhests other than for the challenge log by using its roulette. You can totally get them by playing in a normal method. (I want fat pope chocobos and golden magiteks dont hate on me.) Have a like for your suffering!
True, there's an achievement for 200 guildhests, but it seems like a rather random thing to sit down and spam. Especially several people doing it simultaneously 😅 but you're right that is technically an option!
I had one day i spammed guildhest cause i tried to fix my steamdeck(new to it, ps5 user usually) setting cause i have a 3 sec lag that i cannot get rid of so it took me like 3 hours of spamming to realise its a network stability issue and not the graphics. I swear pple probably hate my ass cause i only have the first one on that baby paladin unlocked 😂luckily its not me in that video cause my character is potato but i was so focused on trying to fix the lag that i didnt notice any mentor roulletters xD chose guildhest cause itll be less cruell to subject my team to sastasha with a crazy lag than a 1 min guildhest. Commendations are by far the worst requirement for mentor. Myself as a male Hrothgar player almost always get one com at most. I see myself as a decent player and mostly play tank. The fact that I only have 1200 coms with 4000 Hours played really irks me. Sure, I could fantasia into a catgirl and probably farm them easier, but I like my char as it is. I would be happy if they would get rid of the com requirement and think about some requirements that make sense.
I'm curious... Would you consider multiple Praetorium runs in a row also a bad day in Mentor roulette? At least y'all would be level 50, and it's a lot more... engaging, I suppose. Hopefully that statement above wouldn't jinx the next few mentor roulette sessions LOL

The key difference is when you do the guildhests to clear them - like actually complete each one for the completion that one time - then there is a clear goal! But when you get under the armor hour after hour it feels endless in a way 😅

Another thing I wanted to say is that I wish people were less incentivised to farm for mentor status because of the crown when the main purpose of it was to help new players which is something these players probably won’t do.

I went to the comments to say this exact thing. I've seen plenty of groups where the person without a crown on their head was more helpful to a new player than the person with one
To be fair, for those of us who are mentors, there isn't much incentive to actually act as mentors when you want to help sprouts play their job right and the KINDEST response you get is "this isn't my main, I'm just leveling it". I've resigned to doing most of my mentor roulettes without much input, and only speaking up if I think my advice will be heeded (of course, I'm not always a good guesser).

I hate guildhests, just find them too boring to even bother farming coms for them. I enjoy a lot of the dungeons from the game to begin with, so ill get my coms that way. My problem is; I want to become a mentor, but at the same time I don't because some people don't accept advice and act hostile to you, which I feel is a dampener on becoming a mentor. Of course it will happen, but it just seems more often than not.
I learned about people comm farming guildhests a while back and decided that if I want the crown, I'm gonna get the 1500 comms the legit way first , then do those.

Yea if I get under the armor or other guildhests I make it a point to NEVER comm because I won't support that bullshit.
If you play support classes and put a bit of effort into your portrait, it will genuinely not take too long. I've gotten all the commendation achievements with, 2 years of play.
@tarecalibrav1642 still comm regardless, but for under the armour specifically I always give it to a dps. Especially if they don't have a job stone yet.
There is another group of people who are farming guildhests, though I doubt it's the reason these people were. But "The Last Resort" title requires 100 guildhests completed, and the achievement "Enreptured Servitude" requires 200 guildhest completions. If we assume people will do 2000 mentor roulettes for a mount, and since Cider Spider is proving people are out there who will achieve anything if it's an "achievement" then, there are some people who are doing guildhests for these too.
Offering an alternative to comm farming, but that's also because I didn't even try to get commendations - I just play as a support main and get commended by default anyways XD

There is another similar reason to spam guildhests. You have to complete EVERY one to unlock mentor roulette. Therefore, if you want to unlock mentor roulette and have mostly ignored guildhests up to that point, you will be queuing for ALL of them one-by-one. That may not have been the case here.
I'll be honest that when I get guildhests in mentor roulette, I look for someone that doesn't have battle mentor and comm them, hoping that they grind comms so that I can get faster mentor roulettes myself.
That is a possibility, and if I had landed sequentially in different guildhests whenever the same name popped up I would've been more likely to suspect that possibility! But the fact it was usually the same names associated with spamming a specific one, it seemed unlikely to be the case!
And yes I can see the upside to getting guildhests if you're more interested in just getting the mentor roulettes over with. You can probably understand I have a split interest because while I do want to do that, I also want to have fun, *and* of course I brought a camera, it is more fun if something exciting happens! 😂
Also to note there is an achievement and a title for clearing 200 guildhests, which gives The Last Resort title. Which I use ironically enough.
I'm not sure how many of my commendations I got doing guildhests, I'm sitting at 2462 currently. But I know for a fact that I crossed the 1500 line by doing ARR and HW relics sync'd on tank and healer jobs.
Ok yeah that title is pretty funny I guess, but it still seems like a nightmare to actively spam guildhests for that! 😂
Since there’s pretty much nothing to comment about, I’d like to share an experience I had earlier today that reminded me of the one with the 10+ raise Kugane Ohashi.
I leveled my SGE to 100 and wanted to practice, so I queued for trials roulette and got the Interphos with I think 4 first timers. It turned out to be by FAR my most stressful fight as a healer, the DPS were failing pretty much every mechanic. The fight took 15 minutes and we had a total of *24 DEATHS.*
There were some moments where I was using swift+rez literally on cooldown lol

I was lucky our tanks and my co healer knew what they were doing, I died once to bad timing with the tracking drone thingys, MT died twice, and the DPS died 21 times 💀
There was a RPR who just did not seem to learn any mechanic at ALL. They died 8 times and I was considering just leaving them on the ground lol
I earned my 1500 commendations just by playing the game. Although I started as tank I always told people I was new and asked for advice. A lot of people were willing to help me. I eventually got better by playing the game normally. Commendations are not hard to get just don’t be a jerk, play your jobs well, and you’ll get there in time. Those people spamming under the armour annoy me it’s the status they want without any of the effort to actually earn or learn along the way. If thats how they approach life as well I truly feel sorry for them.
Chill DPS main here. After 4 years of playing I'm barely reaching 1100. Not spamming duties doesn't help me, for sure. But the fact that I got like 300+ (400+?) comms in Frontlines, which I only started occasionnaly touching 1.5 years ago, tells another story about "you'll get there in time". From my experience (and those of two friends, one maining tank and the other healer), comms are simply not a DPS thing. (full disclosure : I main PAL in Frontlines)
The whole irony of it all is that I always try my best in every duty (still getting a bunch of vuln, because I'm a slow learner like that^^) and I genuinely want to become a mentor to help people (I'm better at teaching than I am at applying what I learn^^).
It's really not that serious. It's a game, it's silly to extrapolate assumptions about other people's lives just because they're trying to do an in-game grind marginally faster.

Sure, mentors are intended to help out with "game knowledge" or whatever but I legitimately can't remember the last time anyone with Mentor crown was actually helpful and not just playing the game for themselves too. It's just an ego thing, even for the people with the "real" crown. It makes no real difference for 99% of players if you're not in the sprout network. The game's been out for almost two decades now, there's thousands of hours of helpful guides and content available.
For those looking to complete as many mentor roulette duties as efficiently as possible, they would absolutely love getting under the armor several times in a row. For the same reason that getting msq roulette dungeon in mentor feels bad since you are spending much more time for the same reward.

Once I got close to my 1500 commendations I realized if I wanted the roulette I would need to do all of the guildhests, so I did them all at once. I got the same healer 3 or 4 times in a row, and there were definitely other recurring characters. I felt a bit bad for sucking up mentors for an hour

The point of mentor roulette is to backfill queues for people trying to do specific content, and you had a perfectly good reason to be running through that content. I can't speak for anyone else but I don't mind getting guildhests to help out people who are trying to actually complete guildhests, for whatever reason! It's the comm farmers who spam the same one over and over and over that get irritating.

I went over the data from my mentor roulettes during endwalker again and came to a few more conclusions: Low level dungeons are heavily weighted towards tank and healer (especially healer) but as you go higher in level numbers even out over time, up to expert dungeons which actually seemed weighted towards dps a little bit. Extreme trials actually seemed to have a roughly equal chance between all three roles while normal raids were highly dps-favoured.
And guildhests, apparently, also heavily weighted towards dps. For some reason.
Well from that data I guess it makes perfect sense I got this many as a dps! 🤔 Thank you for sharing!
guildhests being weighted towards dps makes sense since the people spamming them for comms will logically go tank/healer to be more likely to get the comm, also their queue is probably faster on support so if they are farming them that also makes sense to use.

I want a lot of guildhests lol, surprisingly rare for me lately. I was, however, surprised to see Anamnesis Anyder yesterday. Post-shb dungeons just come rarely in general
Based on my recent results, my recommendation if you want guildhests is like... The afternoon, preferably before daily reset. Based on others accounts dps might also be more likely to land you there!
Not sure if this is just on oceania thing with our low player counts, but it's very common that new players get first time duty completions by putting pf listings asking for help, because duty finder queue times get too long as you get higher in levels.
So when I want to jump into parties with whatever new player needs help (the point of mentor roulette), I end up going into duties with pre formed parties, where commendations can't be handed out.
If I hadn't naturally gotten the commendations I needed before getting around to doing the dawntrail role quests, I probably would have started commendation farming because that requirement was becoming a tougher bottleneck the more I actually helped people.
Not that I think the requirement being there is a bad thing. Forcing out most newer players who haven't built up the commendations and incentivising people to do roulettes on support roles to get more commendations are probably necessary evils.
What is the worst prison ? Mordion Gaol or guildhest jail! The second one can really get Under your skin... or Armor.
You know, if I could just instead sit and casually talk with a gm about something in the gaol I'd almost rather have that!! 😂

When I was a little sprout and didn't know better, I thought guildhests were great to farm gil. That first time bonus really adds up in a pinch!
Had I gotten into this kind of mentor roulette hell, I would've stopped around halfway. I just don't have the endurance for doing guildhests over and over. And it's also because of this I have to commend Cae for going through with this. 👍But yes, the most likely reason people spam guildhests is because of possibly getting fast commendations, and I can attest to that. I got 1500 commendations for my alt not long ago, and I'm in the process of unlocking mentor roulette for her. But I hadn't even opened guildhests for her, so I had to. And most of the time, when I did them as Paladin, I got full 3 commendations from them.
Wow, yeah if you do get three commendations per guildhest it would obviously be incredibly fast!

Had this once too, at some point the healer and I were just comming each other for like half an hour, was kinda funny! Cause like you said, it's their choice to spam this and we can't do anything about it
Oh I know it's a universal thing! I have a friend who just leaves if he sees a guildhest, the 30 minute punishment being the time needed to recover from that pain anyway 🤣
You can definitely break free form guildhest prison by switching to tank or healer. Tank and Healer are often very much in need for leveling content. So even with DPS spamming guildhests there will be moments where some leveling dungeon has higher priority. Also a guildhest still needs two DPS, so one DPS farming commendations still means you can get into their duty, where if you play tank and another tank queues up it means you will not get into his group.
As a DPS in mentor roulette you often just fill into content where DPS can become rare, which is mostly raids, trials and guildhest. Which leads to in my experience way better variety if you play DPS, since tanks and healers get a lot of dungeons but can cause these very biased days of only guildhests if multiple players decide to farm commendations while you a e doing your roulettes.

Been an achievement hunter since I started playing a year ago, and only started getting a lot of comms recently because I've been leveling up all the healers. I might not be a mentor, I might not be dedicated enough to actually teach people about stuff, but I do try to help when I can. And honestly, I think that's what a mentor should have more than just a straight "1500 comms"
1:20 I believe the skip was fixed in DT. I've had them do this both solo and with parties and every time they follow now. I think they couldn't go into the vent before, now they can.

Honestly if you have to farm comms, you're a bad player. An alt I made last October that is in the patch content for Stormblood has over a thousand comms. Not my primary alt that I'm developing for raiding, just a "what's it like being a lalafell" alt that I barely play.

It is complicated, because I can understand some players who are actually good are somehow having trouble getting comms. What the exact problem is, is hard to say, but I imagine the most common problem for them is "if you are mainly doing content with friends, there's no one to comm you." and "if you mainly do content with friends who are visibly slightly better than you, it might be difficult for you to stand out more". Weird things like that! 😅

any reason i would spam guildhests for comms would be if my alts sprout was about to fall of and get mentor and be able to stay in NN chat. but i would still not do it, bcs doing trade mentor is way easier and imo actually would be more fun.
Interestingly, depending on one's level-range, a lot of those spamming for commendations would only ever get sent into certain guildhests, and if those guildhests in turn give very little XP, they could essentially "level hold" for a ridiculously long amount of time while farming commendations.
Now whether or not that's a productive use of one's time versus obtaining commendations "naturally"... that's up to them to decide, lol.
Personally I do guildhests for the weekly challenges, as I find it useful for leveling jobs that I don't care to play in group content otherwise (so pretty much all tanks and healers + Black Mage), and even *then* I only do the 3rd and 10th ones as the job I'm leveling, otherwise I do the rest on some other DPS to minimize the amount of time I spend tanking/healing/being Black Mage, lol.
I admittedly only run the mentor roulette just for the mount but I do also give helpful tips and encouragement on dutys when necessary. That being said, I'd very much enjoy getting all of those guild hests back-to-back
The thing i feel about guildhests is that a few of them posit somewhat interesting ideas that then are just NEVER relevant again. Or some of the original idea, especially the first few, are meant as training(before we got that Brand New training stuff), but then they teach either irrelevant or actually wrong information.
Also, I'm about to actually start my mentor roulette farm after years of just thinking about it, and have made a spreadsheet to track all my duties, because data is fun.
Indeed, this could be nice, if they updated the guild hests to actually demonstrate what they meant to teach, and also maybe updated to something more... Modernly relevant!

If you organize players without a party, then running guild-hests st the same time, you queue up pretty reliable with each other and you can give recoms to each other. This would make it a fast way to farm recoms. (This is just a guess)
Yea that would work. There's even a thought that maybe some players pay others to spam guildhests specifically so they increase the likelihood or some such... But I can't be sure on that one! 😅

Another perspective on commendation farming. I’ve been playing actively since somewhere in the middle of Shadowbringers. In that time, I’ve played more roulettes as healers than anything else. I’m still something like 400 commendations off 1500. Getting them “normally” could take me another 6+ months. Or, I could just finish all the other requirements, and then spend a couple of days farming guildhests. Seems like a pretty easy choice.
Sounds like it was a group of friends that were queueing for the GuildHests as solos to be put together to be able to com each other. At least this is my guess, unsure exactly how queueing works but this is my guess. I... don't know what to say about the whole idea. Feel like as long as the people in question are able to help actual sprouts in the future it isn't the worst thing at least.
I only give recommendations if the players have achieved something. For example, saying hello at the beginning. That is quite an achievement for some. 🙃

There is another actual possibility. There is an achievement for doing 200 guildhests. Perhaps some of them were going for that achievement.
Also I've been playing for 2 and a half years and I still have yet to meet the mentor quota of 1500 coms. I've been trying my best to help in duties regardless, but I've actually had times where people discarded my advice due to "only being a crafting mentor".
I don't think these people would have listened even if I had the regular crown, but it is frustrating.
To your crafting mentor advice: no those players just looked for a reason to not listen. If you had a full mentor crown they would possibly had looked at some other reason 😰

I was bored to death with Guildhests from the very start. My Alt will never be a Mentor, but she'll also never have to queue into a Guildhest, the Dorne Chimera, or a fight where Greg turns you into a chicken or Ultros turns you into an imp for 40% of the encounter.
I suppose that is a sort of benefit of an alt, that you can actively choose to avoid unlocking content you don't want! 😅

My problem with the spamming of guildhest isn’t the fact people are doing it as I’m in a situation where I would probably have to to unlock mentor roulette it in the month. The problem I have with it is that 1500 commendations is way more of a problem for certain players over another. I am a mainly dps player and sometimes tank player and I don’t touch healer cause I’m really bad with it and I don’t have fun player healer all that much. This culminates in an issue where I’ve been playing since the start of endwalker and done probably tens of thousands of duties at this point. Most of my time is in savage and ultimate now probably though and you get nothing for those. Probably for the best but I’m in a spot where after so many normal duties from roulettes I have 1200/1500 and now in a rut of if I want to do mentor roulette I now have to spam duties and path of least resistance is of course the most tempting. I maybe have gotten 20 commendations since the start of dawntrail and it sucks to be put in this spot as tank and healer always get the most comms usually. Honestly being able to hand out more than one comm per instance in like 8 or 24 people duties could help a lot but that’ll probably still only go to tank and healer for the most part. Main reason I say all this is cause I can’t blame people for doing it and those who aren’t ready for mentor should be shamed I don’t think it’s good to shame all players who do it.

After seeing the that trick on how folks farm for commendations to get mentor. It's easy to see how there's so many fake mentors around. Just did a MSQ roulette yesterday with a "Mentor" Ninja with a Returner Ninja and throughout the dungeon they're doing nothing but spam Doton and Huton on the bosses. As a ninja main, it was painful to watch.
I enjoy doing mentor roulettes (not even to get the achievements or mount) but have several alts and want to be able to do it on all of them. I'm on my 4th character on the road to mentor eff trying to get it naturally at that point lol although, i can only handle spamming guildhests for maybe 30 mins before I get mega bored, then just spam trials roulette as tank or healer 🤷 I mean, I've gotten thousands of comms naturally so..... I'm allowed right? 😅
They have had the same requirements for mentor for a while, i personally would like to see an extra thing added so that mentors are actually people who want to help out other players and not just do it for funny crown

@@CaetsuChaijiCh could have an achievement required for it that is a couple of hundred runs of each roulette for battle mentor, have to do specific crafts that are difficult and require knowledge of crafting as a whole, lastly add a pvp mentor where you need to run a bunch of frontlines and CC to get.
i think these would require the person to be semi competent to atleast get mentor, issue is when it comes to people who have played a long time as it would happen naturally but you would think at that time they would be able to help newer players
could also make the roulette one based on a tank, a healer and a dps, 100 each

Something I've had a bit of success with is doing my mentor roulettes closer to after the daily reset - doesn't always work, and may also need to be earlier in the weekly lockout, but hey, maybe it helps! 😕

I don’t have much interest in becoming a mentor but I get wanting to farm for comms “artificially”. I have maybe 4-5k hours in ffxiv over 10 years and still lack the needed commendations. I think I need 2-300 more? I raid savage and ultimates but the thing to realize is that you generally only get comms if you play tank/healer since they’re further up on the comm list. It also seems easiest to fetch comms if you only say greetings at the start/end of a duty instead of trying to assist/converse with the party members via chat. Most of the issue is there’s only 4 tanks and 4 healers so once they’re leveled I generally only run roulettes on dps since tbh they’re more fun to do casual content on and there’s way more to level up. If I do ex roulette on my healer main jobs instead it’s easy to get 1-2 comms a run but it’s way too easy to be enjoyable plus I max all the healers out within a month or 2 and don’t enjoy doing roulettes for no reward.
In general I would say the mentor system is broken and most mentors don’t actually have an interest in teaching/helping or even better game knowledge. It’s good the system exists to help queue times on less popular content but on days like these is it really working as intended
As someone with almost 6000 commendations, grinding guildhests for those seems silly. Also like you said, while getting noting but guildhest may be a bad day for content, its still a good day for progression on the mentor mount grind. lol
Ngl, I feel like Im one of the few people that doesnt enjoy getting guildhests in mentor roulette. I just wanna get any content that doesn’t die in less than a minute ;w;
They are doing Guildhest Roulette for Achievements. Those are a thing and Achivement hunters exist.
People spam under the armor to get commendations to unlock mentor roulette to eventually unlock astrope.
I also met a few who did it to regain access to their server's new player channel

I see it this way, the less commendation i give to Under the Armor spammers the fastest i finish farming Astrope. In my opinion commendations are reserved for extraordinaryly good behaviour or in its absense to the portrait i like most (if i like any).

What were you saying last Mentors video? Hahaha But yeah, this is basically why I almost never Comm a Tank or Healer in a guild hest unless they are a sprout. First, there's pretty much nothing a tank or healer can do in a guild hest that is really, truly Comm worthy and, second, because far too often they're just using them to farm Comms anyway (and I'd rather not encourage that behaviour)

Guildhests are used by bots and multiboxed accounts to efficiently grind comms and, of course, mentor roulette. Far more common on Dynamis but it happens.
TIL not all jobs get an exp bonus from guildhests. Weird that it doesn't apply to later jobs.
Personally I'm surprised it applies to jobs that start at level 50! 😅

I'm only at like 1300ish commendations. Since I've been on Dynamis for a while and prior to DT dropping you just didn't Queue for stuff, you used PF exclusively since the server population was so small. But you can't give commendations in PF groups (or any premade party). I probably would have more than 1.5k by now if it weren't for that, but I've no real interest in being a mentor.
I mostly play by ear and have a hard time typing in game, so I can't really give effective advice.

Dude, I recently completed the 2000 grind... And 28 Guildhests in a row seems like bragging instead of a bad day. Especially with the other 2 being Normal Raids, typically a quick clear.
DPS is definitely the faster and more efficient Mentor grinder. But that is because he tends to get filled on those people grinding out comms on guildhests. While that is boring it's also very efficient and when you're at 1800 it becomes a godsent...
Yeah I get that! 😂 I suppose the fact I'm not even that focused on getting the achievement progress means I just go "aw that's boring!" and forget the efficiency part! 🤣

There was days it took me 4hrs to get the 20. Hell, some days I had to do 40 because it was maintenance the next day, I would be so happy if 28 of those were Guildhests...
honestly... ive been playing for just under a year, and i almost have 3k comms - and my best guess why, is cuz my name is goofy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i dont blame people for doing guildhests, cuz i know most of my comms come from my characters name being "Good Manman" and i think people get a bit of a chuckle out of it - not everyone wants to have a goofy name or cosplay as a well known character for comms and thats fair - but god guildhests are dull lol
I would actually be pretty curious to see how fast you end up accruing commendations by spamming Under the Armour. I can't imagine it's that fast, since you don't actually do anything in that guildhest that would make people want to commend you more than anyone else in your party. I guess as a tank, if you're near the start of the week and people haven't completed their weekly Exercising the Right yet so they're just blindly commending every tank they party with, no matter what?
Still, seems incredibly mind-numbing and dull, not to speak of pointless.
The exercising the right log makes sense, but that would also make it less and less likely the further in a weekly reset you get I suppose! 🤔
maybe they are farming GC Seals too, from adventurer in need, since it's 1 minute long for a few hundred, and the alternative is the leveling which give 10x more but takes 15~20 minutes.. Efficiency wise, i think GH would be better, although way more boring.

I have reached almost 6k commends on my main (my mentor), 1400+ on two alts and 300+ on 4 others. NEVER ONCE have I spammed guildhests other than for the challenge log by using its roulette. You can totally get them by playing in a normal method. (I want fat pope chocobos and golden magiteks dont hate on me.) Have a like for your suffering!

True, there's an achievement for 200 guildhests, but it seems like a rather random thing to sit down and spam. Especially several people doing it simultaneously 😅 but you're right that is technically an option!
I had one day i spammed guildhest cause i tried to fix my steamdeck(new to it, ps5 user usually) setting cause i have a 3 sec lag that i cannot get rid of so it took me like 3 hours of spamming to realise its a network stability issue and not the graphics. I swear pple probably hate my ass cause i only have the first one on that baby paladin unlocked 😂luckily its not me in that video cause my character is potato but i was so focused on trying to fix the lag that i didnt notice any mentor roulletters xD chose guildhest cause itll be less cruell to subject my team to sastasha with a crazy lag than a 1 min guildhest. I wish there were was a setting guid for post DT for that instead of like 3 hours down the drain of game setting, steamdeck setting, and mixing and matching 💀 edit: the lag is visible - once my range hit the monster it takes 3 Mississippies to register and the healthbar to turn red💀 still didnt fix that🥲
Commendations are by far the worst requirement for mentor. Myself as a male Hrothgar player almost always get one com at most. I see myself as a decent player and mostly play tank. The fact that I only have 1200 coms with 4000 Hours played really irks me. Sure, I could fantasia into a catgirl and probably farm them easier, but I like my char as it is. I would be happy if they would get rid of the com requirement and think about some requirements that make sense.

tbh i dont even understand how anyone would need to farm to be a mentor, i have about 1400 commendations, havent even started Shadowbringers yet, the way I'm so sure ill have like 3000 by the time I actually go and unlock the mentor stuff lol. idk I am curious how they came up with the 1500, lil bit feel like it should be hire but im still p new so what do i know lol

The key difference is when you do the guildhests to clear them - like actually complete each one for the completion that one time - then there is a clear goal!
But when you get under the armor hour after hour it feels endless in a way 😅
