I've always loved dragoons, because their response to flying enemies wasn't, "Let's develop powerful long-ranged weaponry," or "Let's practice effective long-range magic." No, it was, "Let's get so good at jumping we can stab them with a spear." What's not to love about that mindset?
Black Mage: "I cast explosions at the flying dragon" Bard: "I shoot arrows at the flying dragon" Warrior "Dammit why does it have to fly" - chucks a tomahawk, Dragoon: "I JUMP 500 feet into the air and stab it with my pointy stick!"
I love how the Dragoon's progression is lore base. From Blood of the Dragon/Geirskogul, to Life of the Dragon/Nastrond, to Star Diver, it's all leading the Dragoon to be more Dragon-like, or to be more specific, Nidhoog-like.
I can imagine a dragoon in training, great at the lance, the jump, but their landing… is reminiscent of George of the Jungle. A great lecture Professor.
Weekly Dragoon Training Schedule (Why most Ishgard Knights wash out of Dragoon training): Day 1: Leg Day Day 2: Leg Day Day 3: Leg Day Day 4: Leg Day Day 5: Leg Day Day 6: Leg Day Day 7: Leg Day
Ninja’s and rogues are generally thought of as sneaky assassin’s striking at the right moment while being very agile and quick ,ergo leading to the cat like reflexes and graceful landings they are known for. In FFXIV I think dragoon’s would also have learned that falling skill just based on necessity .
Ive always thought of it as not because of their skills but because of their armor. The rogues by design use their abilities plus their lighter gear to stick the landing better. I think the Dragoon armor is still treated like mail or slightly lighter heavy armor? Like, they may be skilled at sticking the landing but theyre still bringing all that extra weight down with them as they do it?
It makes more sense for your average Dragoon to take fall damage, but our Dragoon is Second Azure Dragoon! We should automatically get a pass for ourselves canonically being on the same skill level as a Dragoon as Estinien post Stormblood and beyond.
One of my favorite parts about Dragoon's lore is that its a practical class. A practical response to a practical problem of war. Its a world of magic where a nation needs a reliable, low tech solution to kill flying enemies: Just fucking jump at em. It probably means that you'd find a weaker version of Dragoons active in the Azim steppe because they *also* need low tech solutions to fighting flying enemies, mounted Roc Riders. They lacked the power of two dragons to get the discipline started, but I would bet money a culture that decides to kill each other as a means of deciding political leadership is a crucible for fighting styles. I won't pretend that 'dragoon-lites' would be even half as strong as people juiced up by dragon magic, though.
The alternative if you’re fighting fliers that aren’t multi-ton scaled monsters is a spear with a rope on it. You either pull them from the sky or get a crash course on the finer points of high jump and improvised landings.
The First does have an something similar to this. I don't remember what they're called exactly, but the First's version of dragoon was developed to fight flying enemies.
Lancer/Dragoon wasn't the job that I started as but once I tried it, it was an instant "click" of "oh, this is what I'm here to do." Plus Dragoons have a great look. I like this lore dive! Thank you very much.
I had the exact same experience as you. I played the game on and off for the last couple years, never feeling very drawn to the lancer. Once I actually gave it a chance one night a few weeks ago... I haven't played a single other job since. I've found my calling to say the least, Dragoon is the job for me.
I love that you explain the lore behind dragoons dying so often due to animation lock. And the lore makes complete sense for the same reason it happens in gameplay.
DRG really has the best cohesion between its gameplay loop and its lore, especially from a leveling perspective. A really fun mix between your unorthodox experience as an adventuring lancer and an azure dragoon.
When I first had the pleasure of playing FFIV as a young child, The Dragoon, Kain Highwind exploded my imagination and all I wanted to be was him (in all his pixelated glory). I imagined being able to jump super high with a spear, and I would play outside pretending to be Kain. Dragoons have a special place in my heart, and playing FFXIV as a Dragoon at my age now really completes it for me. Thanks for the vid!

I just discovered your channel a couple hours ago and already I’m binging videos. Incredibly well done and so very informative! Thank you for explaining the lore of the world we all love!
I will always be grateful for choosing Lancer as my starting class in FFXIV. Everything about the dragoon’s journey of loss and moving forward resonates with me especially since Kain in FFIV. Heavensward surprised me in the fact that it made that choice better than I could have even imagined. GREAT VIDEO!! ❤❤
While I never took DK nor DRG jobs, it's nice to see that these jobs can be acquired on the same place, Ishgard.. It's like it's paying respects to Kain and Cecil. Also that attack animation 11:29 is Cecil's..
There were a few tidbits that I think you missed First off, during the dragonsong war at least, it's stated by one of the Dragoons that they're not actually that great with Lancework... Suffering a crippling overspecialization as their training helps them to fight airborne or otherwise large enemies. Grounded enemies or enemies the size of Humans are a bit harder to hit with Jumps, thereby making Dragoons a bit less effective against them. The primary character of the 50-60 quests wants to train *under* us because we've effectively blended Gridanian Lancework with Ishgardian Dragoon styles. It does show in some segments of the game as well, as certain Dragoons even at full power don't quite fight with the poise and grace of a Lancer Furthermore, you neglected to mention in any way the existence of the Dragon Soul inside of each Dragoon, and how they dominate it to achieve their jumps to begin with. It's also a source of their greatest drawbacks, as the Dragon Soul does not like being forced to use its power against Dragons, and is always in conflict with the Dragoon to try and take control and turn them into a Dragon themselves. Dragoons themselves are trained not only from Knights, but also primarily from children whose villages were razed by Dragons, using their sheer rage to temper their power and make them that much more effective. However, when the Dragon Soul is able to cooperate with the Dragoon - which we start to see towards level 60 - it confers far greater power. In regular Dragoons, this is usually unobtainable as their Dragon Soul isn't that strong, but through consuming Dragon's Blood it grows stronger and more akin to one of the First Brood... Conferring power closer to the level of the Azure Dragoon With that in mind, one must also consider the brief effect "Life of the Dragon", which I can only speculate involves the Dragon Soul briefly *taking over* the body to enable the use of far more potent forms of Geirskogul and the Jump. It's through the cooperation of the two souls that enable them to effectively fight in a battle-trance, though never for longer than 30 seconds. Finally, I believe it's worth mentioning the existence of the "Blood Dragoons" following the Dragonsong War. Titles bestowed upon Dragoons who forge bonds with Dragons, and are granted specially crafted armor from the Dragon in question. These Dragoons are, functionally speaking, stronger than the Azure Dragoons due to the strength of their Dragon soul and the mutual cooperation they have achieved by no longer slaying Dragons out of hatred Just some thoughts I had while watching. Very enjoyable watch though
Not only was it awesome for Estinien to address me as a fellown Azure Dragoon when i was lvling it, but after the ShadowBringsrs cinematic it was cement as the coolest job just based on how they move about in a 3d environment but literally jumping off of air.
Coming back to this. My second character started as Lancer and naturally progressed to Dragoon. But at lvl 53 I discovered Red Mage and switched to that. Yet I couldn’t quite let go of Dragoon and continued to level it to 60. Even then with the conclusion of the Dragonsong War I was going to have her put down the Lance for this new era of peace. Y'know, the bit about dragon blood and dragon fire used in metalworking makes me wonder: if some dragons decided to donate decidedly nonlethal amounts of blood - like a blood drive but with dragons - and the smiths of Ishgard had access to both dragon fire to smelt their metal and dragon blood to quench it, how much stronger would that make the arms and armor? Presumably a lot, right?
I am having so many emotions about this. Like, I have loved dragoon from the first moment of playing it, and always looked at it from a gameplay perspective as opposed to how they operate within the world. I am blown away with the history because I've either forgotten these facts or completely missed them (or they weren't there in what I've played). This is so awesome, thank you ^♡^
I like how in FFXIV the Dragoon has a canonical transition from one of the forms Dragoons took in older games; a slayer of dragons, to the other; a Dragon Rider. That's just neat. Though I believe it's not the first time the franchise has had Dragoons transition from one to the other in a single setting.
Dragoons irl are calvary type warriors too, known for horseback combat. So I always imagined in FF14, their riding/piloting stats would naturally be high - like they can drive most anything pretty competently.
@@Sarucapture4fight Your not wrong... to drive it home, Dragoons where actually mounted infantry. (They would ride to their location on horseback and then dismount to fight.) Which Dragoons often do in Final Fantasy, when they are Dragon Riders, use the mount for transportation in between fight's then dismounting to fight, and freeing up the dragon to fight more aggressively. Then using their insane jumping capabilities to remount without forcing the dragon to land, so they can move to another location on the battlefield. So pretty accurate aside from the fact that real life Dragoons used Muskets... but hey a rifle with a bayonet is basically a spear right?
I wonder what would happen if a Dragon focused its evolution to emulate the techniques and fighting style of a Dragoon. We've already seen evidence of Dragons having the capability of evolving to something in order to better effectively copy mortal ingenuity in the form of a crafting Dragon in the Firmament. So it would be amazing to see a Dragon attempt to emulate a Dragoon someday. :D
@LowIntSpecimen Yup, though he's just using Estinien's body. I'd like to see what a Dravinian would and fight like using their own evolved body suited to the fighting style of a Dragoon. I doubt they would look like what Estinien looked like possessed by Nidhogg. They'd more than likely retain most of their draconic appearance while having a more humanoid shaped body like the Syricta: those blue/green humanoid dragons that wander around the Dravinian Hinterlands. Or something less humanoid, but just more dexteritious with their limbs and such, like Ehll Tou from one of the Ishgardian Custom Delivery weekly quests.
Yes as much as our will is for the sky we also all need to remember to all my fellow dragoons that we must keep whatever is hiding down in the bottom pits of Titans arena in check. For if that thing ever arises it will destroy all of Eorzea. ( do not take this as a serious thing I am just making fun of that us dragoons we always fall in the pit at Titan at least once in our whole career. It's kind of like a ceremonial thing at this point because this is where you would get the backflip and if you use a backflip there in the fight you'll fall in the pit. So like I said do not take what I said serious but to one Dragoon to another keep your spear sharpen and keep your head high to the sky for our adventure will never be over.)
The only thing you forgot is how the armors of dragoons are full of spikes because they would pierce the throat of dragons trying to eat them. Otherwise, incredible lesson, as always.
Do people really think that joke is part of the lore? The first set of "Dragoon" armor predates the Dragon Song war, so it wouldn't have been designed with that in mind. People need to stop taking off handed remarks as 100% canon. xD
I still believe the Spikes on the armor arent just funny spikes but act like wings to let them manuver around, makes the flips and dips they do more realistic
This was AWESOME!! Thank you for making this! I've been a Lancer/Dragoon main since I started playing(late Shadowbringers), and it's become one of my top favorite classes. The lore, emotion, and weight behind the class is far outshadowed by memes and jokes around the class, and I've had a hard time trying to convince friends to play or stick with the class. Little side thing, in my opinion, it's a damn shame they got rid of Blood of the Dragon. It was one of the coolest parts of the class, in my opinion, especially since it blended so well into Red Eye Mode. I just wish they would have made it similar to, say, a Dancer's gauge, where you wouldn't loose your charges even if the timer ran out, instead of just removing the ability alltogether. I miss getting to roar like a dragon into combat. 😭
Glad you enjoyed it! Dragoon as actually my main when I played FFXI and when I started FFXIV, so it still holds a special place in my heart even if I don't play it as religiously as I used to.
It means supporting a war that the god king pope lied to you about, being completely incapable of dodging aoe's,and NEVER being able to outdo estinien in skill and sexiness no matter how hard you try.
Hey dope videos! gives alot of insight on the world of ff14. The dragoon is one of my favorite classes. When you can I'd love to see the lore of the monk
man call me what ever but I have been a long time healer main in most games until recently where I now just want to dps and see big numbers. Its honestly shocking how much more I am enjoying dragoon compared to any other class in ffxiv. Then after watching the lore on dragoon it has made me feel some how even more connected to the job. I love that Dragoons are so brave, courages and strong. While fear might be present they show no fear. Its something that really resonates with me lately and its something that has helped me in my own personal growth. So its pretty neat how my current path in life where I am pushing myself more and more is somewhat similar to my main dragoon who never shows fear and is brave all the way through.
considered the Og dragoon lore back there in ff 2 Dragoons were originally Soldiers That rode Wyrms to battle, The spear and jump motiff only arrived in ff 3 where they were turned into the infamous Dragon hunters that were imbued with the power of said dragons
@@SynodicScribe If they make a new job or even an NPC that combines a Machinist's drill with the Dragon's piercing of the heavens, I'm going to explode!🤣
Elusive jump is casted. Dragon: why do I hear boss music? Healer: why do I have to waste my pocket rezz? Dragoon: why do I only get 1 charge of the most badass skill in the game?
I love how the old floor tank reputation due to animation locks is directly acknowledged in the lore, or, rather, as part of the class design. The jumps really are an inherently risky proposition. I always thought of it more as an annoyance other classes don’t have to deal with (except Black Mages and Ninjas, to some degree) but really it’s a storied part of our history! It’s not a bug, it’s a feature! 😂
So uh....Lol DRG??? No. All jokes asides. I main everything but my frist love and still main love is Dragoon. I started FFXIV during the early acess of 2.0 as DRG. I was so elated when Heavensward came out because the "Lol DRG" bs went silent! And throughout expansions, DRG has remained a very coveted lifestyle. So glad I made the right choice in the very beginning. Even with falling in love with all the other DPS, Tank, and Healing jobs, I always go back to DRG. Even my alt chars are also DRGs. And when Endwalker comes out, though I will be leveling Reaper and Sage, I might have to go through the MSQ as DRG. I began this story ark with it and so what better way to end the finale with DRG. Through the fire (Lol DRG absue), my spear and resolve was forged! To all my fellow DRGs - you are the heart of FFXIV. We are mighty and as fierce as dragons. ....And the floor can't inspect itself, now can it? Head up, Spear Forward Brethren!
if there is a staple job that reflects Final Fantasy, one could argue that it is the Dragoon for its uniqueness. No idea who in their right mind thought "Let's make a job which main feature is jumping" and not call them a Vaultist. But still, Dragoons remain the masters of vertical agility and while it's never really shown 'how' their jump ability and training works (except the Shadowbringer trailer perhaps) and memes aside, there's a certain awesome factor to seeing them in action at all levels. - Spoiler ahead - And it's interesting to see how, during the course of FFXIV MSQ, you see how the main representative of the Dragoons, Estinien, comes to evolve the role of Dragoon from Dragon Killer to Dragon Rider and how the WoL's take on the Dragoon arts also evolved in their own way as a more generalist combat art. You could say that the 'modern' Dragoon has a much more different role to play in conflicts now than it did before and what was once an art made out of the necessity of hunting dragons to protect Ishgard, they've now become, in a way, the bridge between man and dragon. And I think one of their most distinct feature, their spiky armor, has a lot more to do with their arts as a mean to control their direction while in the air. That, and having a heavily spiked armor means if a dragon tried to eat you, the spikes would damage their mouth, throat and stomach on the way down, possibly to the point of fatal internal hemorrhage. ... Still don't know why they take fall damage from heights, though... especially since the Ninja even has a passive trait that reduces fall damage; considering that, Dragoons should have immunity to fall damage altogether, especially since it's not a "powered" one.
The spiked Drachen Armor was made before Thordan's betrayal. So they weren't installed to stop the dragoons from being eaten, despite what everyone say. lol
@@SynodicScribe I was talking more about the ones from SB and up. But it's interesting how the SDA was made before killing ratatoskr. So why was the mail so spiky?
So Nidhogg couldve beaten Allag is what you're saying? So if Bahamut and Tiamat asked their brother Nidhogg to step in, then Bahamut wouldn't have died.
I've always loved dragoons, because their response to flying enemies wasn't, "Let's develop powerful long-ranged weaponry," or "Let's practice effective long-range magic." No, it was, "Let's get so good at jumping we can stab them with a spear." What's not to love about that mindset?
"This warrior keeps itself in the air by the sheer force of anger alone."
My main weapon in MHW is Insect Glaive... *Guess im a Dragoon now*
Black Mage: "I cast explosions at the flying dragon" Bard: "I shoot arrows at the flying dragon" Warrior "Dammit why does it have to fly" - chucks a tomahawk, Dragoon: "I JUMP 500 feet into the air and stab it with my pointy stick!"
Guess the adage He who dares, wins, Is applicable here.
Dragon: You can fly!!!
Dragoon: No jump good
I love how the Dragoon's progression is lore base. From Blood of the Dragon/Geirskogul, to Life of the Dragon/Nastrond, to Star Diver, it's all leading the Dragoon to be more Dragon-like, or to be more specific, Nidhoog-like.
To add to this, in endwalker they're getting an upgrade to chaos thrust and it's animation looks exactly like ala morn from nidhogg phase 2
As a new sprout you have no idea how happy this lore bit makes me im a lore nerd lol 😂❤
Ironically, the Dragoon is Nidhogg's greatest legacy, despite its tragic and bloody birth.
I can imagine a dragoon in training, great at the lance, the jump, but their landing… is reminiscent of George of the Jungle. A great lecture Professor.

I will always question why Rouges and not Dragoons take less fall damage. Great video and as always great art.
Dragoons just use their massive quads to ignore fall damge, they are just too angry to care about the pain
Maybe because the spear driving into the target absorbs most of the kinetic energy, which is perhaps why it deals so much damage.
It makes more sense for your average Dragoon to take fall damage, but our Dragoon is Second Azure Dragoon! We should automatically get a pass for ourselves canonically being on the same skill level as a Dragoon as Estinien post Stormblood and beyond.

Doesn't Nidhogg technically do this in phase 2 of Final Steps of Faith?
Perfect as usual. I was waiting for this one, thank you so much!! Warrior next please!
Dragoon is basically just "We're not flying, we're jumping in ⭐style⭐"
Hell yeah!
I just got my dragoon to 80, thank you for this video, teacher ☺️
I can’t wait to see videos like this for Sage and Reaper once EW comes out and we have a fuller understanding of their lore.
Discovered these videos the other day. Fantastic work! It's really appreciated.
Happy to be found! Glad to have you!
Don't forget its also the duty of a RDM to help out
Thank you very much for this video! It was nice to finally see a DRG video that does the class proud. 👏 🐉
I only found your channel today and I was looking for a dragoon video in your back log some good timing
Nice to meet you as well!
It means supporting a war that the god king pope lied to you about, being completely incapable of dodging aoe's,and NEVER being able to outdo estinien in skill and sexiness no matter how hard you try.
This is so neat! I hope you can do Blue Mages at some point!
We can’t reach the enemy! Do we use archers?
No.
Magic?
No.
Guns?????
No. We jump really high.
By god
"You can fly?"
"No, jump good!"
The life of the floor tank is one of perpetual challenge and landslides... but one Dragoon mains live and die for....
Ahahah you got that right
I will continue to climb higher.
I will continue to jump further.
I am the pride of Ishgard.
I am the lance of coerthas.
I... am a dragoon.
Great video! Since we are going to Garlemald in Endwalker, could we get a lesson on Garlean society?
I only know so much but I can give it a shot!
@@SynodicScribe that would be awesome!
Shit there was a poll? I would'a voted if I knew there was one. Great job as always sensei, thanks for the lesson :)
Yup! The Community tab of the channel has polls every now and then!
Very cool piece. I was just curious about the lore but now I'm definitely gonna give this game and class a try!
My first main.
Besides DarkKnight it still is:
It´s just so unique
Hey dope videos! gives alot of insight on the world of ff14. The dragoon is one of my favorite classes. When you can I'd love to see the lore of the monk
I'll be doing a poll on my community tab this weekend to see which job I cover next, come back and cast your lot my friend!
Just glad the armor no longer provides a penalty to MDef.
man call me what ever but I have been a long time healer main in most games until recently where I now just want to dps and see big numbers.
I always wondered what happened to Ratatoskr's eyes, they said Thordan took them but its not seen anywere in the history or lore
Thordan and his knights ate them. No joke.
@@InfinitusMG having in consideration that they are related to catholics sounds pretty accurate not gonna lie
As was said they ate. Hence the turning into a Dragon thing, when one drinks dragon blood. That's a remnant of Ratatoskr's power.
Can’t wait to see gunbreaker!! My favorite job and dancer too
"Nidhogg went into a blind rage"
I see what you did there.
2:10 ... is what I would like to think after all the times I've jumped off the platform in trials
Nice TTGL reference at the end. Also good video ^^
I really love ur video especially the way explain how the abilities work with aether manipulation
I've always thought of Dragoons as the Ishgardian Special Forces.
Monk: my body is a weapon
Ninja: I fight with trickory and precision.
Dragoon: J U M P
hell yeah im gooning out
DRG's and DRK's are easily the 2 most badass jobs with the most badass backstories.
It's good that I main both in their respective roles.
considered the Og dragoon lore back there in ff 2 Dragoons were originally Soldiers That rode Wyrms to battle, The spear and jump motiff only arrived in ff 3 where they were turned into the infamous Dragon hunters that were imbued with the power of said dragons
Loving the videos! Keep it up Mr. Scribe 😊
Glad you liked it!
MY SPEAR IS THE SPEAR THAT WILL PIERCE THE HEVEANS!!!
-Simon The Dragoon From Gurren Lagann
I'M GOING TO FLY THROUGH THE AIR LIKE A MISSILE!
-A Dragoon Probably
@@SynodicScribe If they make a new job or even an NPC that combines a Machinist's drill with the Dragon's piercing of the heavens, I'm going to explode!🤣
Love that you included animation lock deaths in the training lore 😂
That's all true actually. It's not a joke about floor tanking. xD
Yaaaay my favourite class!
Happy to bring it to you!
What weeds out the dragoon is those that can deal with the action lock. Those that fail... Well they die to AOE.
been waiting for this one !! :D
Well here you go!
we DRG's might be memed to high heavens (lol) but damn, do we have drip and and an entire expansion dedicated to us. Amazing work as always!
Elusive jump is casted.
Dragon: why do I hear boss music?
Healer: why do I have to waste my pocket rezz?
Dragoon: why do I only get 1 charge of the most badass skill in the game?
Always good to point out that Dragoons have another, equally important job aside from tanking those nasty and dangerous floors.
I'm really excited to know the lore of Sage!
TO become a Dragoon you need to be able to dunk from half court
I love how the old floor tank reputation due to animation locks is directly acknowledged in the lore, or, rather, as part of the class design. The jumps really are an inherently risky proposition. I always thought of it more as an annoyance other classes don’t have to deal with (except Black Mages and Ninjas, to some degree) but really it’s a storied part of our history! It’s not a bug, it’s a feature! 😂
Beginning of the Abilities section: Wait, did this video just Lore-Justify Dragoon's Floor-Tanking?
The lore explanation for everything!
Love this art style!
This was perfect inspiration for a dragoon elden ring build :)
As both a drg/mnk main, please do a video on monk!
"Just get in the Coffin," - 1st Day of Dragoon school.
You joke but that actually happened! Poor little Timmy knew how to jump but not how to land....
@@SynodicScribe he only died because he crashed into my Holy Shield rather than the crash mat THREE FEET IN FRONT OF ME!
16:51 *Libera Me From Hell intensifies*
if there is a staple job that reflects Final Fantasy, one could argue that it is the Dragoon for its uniqueness.
- Spoiler ahead -
And it's interesting to see how, during the course of FFXIV MSQ, you see how the main representative of the Dragoons, Estinien, comes to evolve the role of Dragoon from Dragon Killer to Dragon Rider and how the WoL's take on the Dragoon arts also evolved in their own way as a more generalist combat art.
Thank you great video when youre trying to RP 8 characters
You should do podcasts. I love these lore videos.
I've actually been trying to get in touch with other content creators for either a podcast or a collab. So far, no such luck. lol
Dude, you deserve sou many more subscribers!
That's really nice of you to say ^^
Having their artifact gear be less spiky is an interesting detail from the lore. Considering the purpose of the spikes.
Dragoon armor is spiky so to make it harder for dragons to swallow them
Probably also to give a minor degree of resistance to dragonfire as the spikes serve as heatsinks to dissipate the heat.
So Nidhogg couldve beaten Allag is what you're saying? So if Bahamut and Tiamat asked their brother Nidhogg to step in, then Bahamut wouldn't have died.
I'd really love a warrior one of these ...also with a bunny boi on the art that part is the dream tho 😁
