    Thanks Ben and Mary! I started in Nov. '22...Couldn't run a mile without stopping. Now, I'm 4 weeks away from running my first half marathon race. Last week's long run was 21k and I completed it without stopping @ 2 hours 20 min. Never would I have thought I could run a half marathon...let alone do it without stopping and feeling relatively decent at the end. I currently run 5 days/week and am injury free!. Last week's speed session included a 1 mile time trial where I beat my 1 mile PB by over 30 sec! My PROGRESS is small, but it's MINE and no one else's. Keep up the great videos!!!

      I'm so excited for your progress. It was just last year that I ran my first half. I'm on my 3rd now. I think my body is ready to try for a marathon. (But I'm afraid.. lol)

    I always think back to when I started running in my mid 30s. I couldn't run more than a mile w/o stopping, and I was CONSTANTLY injured. I'm in my early 40s now and I've learned that VERY slow progress is what keeps me in the game. Every time I get down on myself about my pace or distance, I think back to not being able to run 1 mile, and now I go for a 13 mile run on Saturday and not think twice about it (less injuries as well). The journey was long, but I'm here and I still have goals to achieve. I'll get there eventually

      I had an Achilles pain that could have turned into a serious injury. But with a marathon 3 weeks away I decided to er on the side of caution and walk home. I took 3 days off from running and it’s completely fine now.

    Thank you, Ben and Mary. I'm a 72-year-old runner from Tennessee, U.S.A. All your videos are great. some more than other but I learn from them all. I did most of my running from age 55 until I was.
    65 and i retired from work and running the same year.....I am now starting to run all over and doing a marathon in Oct. This will be my fourth marathon, but my first after returning to running. Keep up the good videos.

    Thanks for the video Ben and Mary! As for the pizza, aren't you too hard on yourself saying "I'm just gonna put it out there, last night we had pizza", as if it was something to be confessed, and "the diet doesn't always work", as if one pizza made it wrong. Pizza is just pizza :D

    Needed to here this Ben. 22k yesterday which was my longest run yet. Felt waaaay harder and much slower that the 20k i did last week. This video is just what i needed to reaffirm my trust in the process! Great content

      It's so funny how every run is different. I've head great 13 mile runs and struggle through a 4 mile one. As long as we're out there, that's the important part

    Boston has been rainy and cold, great for running 😊
    Sometimes I'm faster and some days I'm dead slow, I try to focus on the fact I'm consistent

      Have different trainers and run differently in each pair. Some I find an odd inspiration to go quicker and others I have the running in treacle mentality

    Running progress can also look like a stock market graph, it has ups and downs but it consistently goes up over time. I'm in a down right now with ultra tight hamstrings but your words of wisdom somehow help. Thanks Ben and Mary

    Thank you so much for this video. My hubby is training for the comrades marathon (86km) and I have set my running days to be the same as his. I'm only training for a half, so my distances are shorter and my sessions more varied. After listening to you I realized how much I've been comparing my progress to his. I use the word "only" so much. I only run for 2 hours. Or I only ran 16kms. So When I took a moment and compared me to just me, and how I trained for a half last year, I realized how much more I actually ran this year, and how far I was able to go, I was suddenly proud to tears, of my progress. Thank you for helping us zoom out, and reminding us to enjoy the journey. Ps I just love the way you and Mary do this together. It's so inspiring to watch you.     Edamame is really great! This year is my training lot worse, than last year, but your video gives me hope, even though i'm already in that age (45), when my fitness starts to decline by aging.

    Thanks for the great video. So many variables contribute to performance on any given day requiring us to be flexible to the every changing outcomes, and not be so hard on oneself. Edamame is delicous!!! I need to add it back to my diet/meals.

    Great reminder with the wider lens. The graph is a perfect representation! I have improved soooo much all around, although I’m currently “slower.” That’s okay! I can train speed if I want to, it’s just not the current focus for a 50k!

    After multiple Yr on Yr set backs and surgery x2.. I plugged away albeit slow and short. I then got myself on to a realistic run plan for 5k then 10k and 13.1 miles. During the 13.1 mid way through the plan of 17 weeks I suddenly had that old feeling of a runners high. 8 wasn't breaking records or even my older times bested. But since then I've progressed gradually again and again knowing it's the long game plan that works

    I was feeling rubbish this morning because my strength training and bike workout I felt Non motivated and as if I not making progress. But then after watching the video I see that yesterday I did a 3600 meter swim, Felt great and was proud that I can now go that far no problem when 2 years ago I was almost drowning trying to complete a 25 meter swim. I will accept my lower end workout today and keep moving on. Maybe it is the anxiety of the my first race of the year coming up in 5 weeks. Cheers

    Only 3 things you need:
    -train hard
    -recover hard
    -eat hard
    If you are not faster, something of those 3 is not right

    Ran my last 20mi of the block last week and averaged low 7’s/mi which is my target M pace at a relatively easy pace and knew if I were to run another 6 I could have
    Yesterday I ran 16mi and struggled at a 7:40/mi pace. I keep reminding myself that nutrition, my shoes, and motivation were different on these weeks.
    After a spectacular blow up last fall in my target marathon, I’m learning to fall back in love with the process and know that I’ll have these highs and lows and to not sweat these single sessions. I know my body is storing it and it’ll come out in a race eventually

    Great video and a really important one! In my last half marathon training block, I only got 6km into a 16km run I was meant to do 3 weeks out before I had to stop and abandon the session. I then got sick and only ran once in the 2 weeks before the race - but still managed an 8min PB. Just shows the consistency and the overall quality of training is the most important things and you just need to listen to your body

    Yes love this Ben. So true. I really thought at the start of marathon prep I would not miss any runs and I would just continue to get better...Well jokes on me haha. It is such a rollercoaster. Sometimes I can smash a long 25k run, and sometimes I am struggling to do a 5k. Running will continuously humble you there is no doubt about it. I try to focus on just having the goal of 'Showing up and trying my best'. If it doesn't go like planned, there is no point beating ourselves up to the point where we give up. Just dust yourself off, pick yourself back up and try again tomorrow.

    Always appreciate the vids. My training heading into Canberra Marathon next weekend was not what I was hoping for because I had to take weeks off because of illness and injury.
    This video is a good reminder that I have my consistency before that to fall back on. I'm going to rock up to the start line next Sunday and just enjoy the experience.

Wow Ben you look tired...but normal at end of a huge marathon training block and entering taper. In my experience (tho less than yours) that bodes very well for your Boston marathon coming soon.     Love you guys and you are so inspirational but I don't know, it's felt like this past month or two you've been over-extending yourselves. Ben sorry, but you look physically so tired mate. You have such important full-time jobs on top of the TH-cam commitments...on top of the total immersion into running...it's so so admirable, but I hope you guys feel genuinely okay!

    Happy easter. The hardrate improvement ist really big for me. I totally enjoy running paces where I'd have like 20-30 bpm more 4-5 years ago when I started runinng. It's really nice. Ofc I also enjoy getting faster ;).

    As the years go by my metric for running success is happiness and community.
    Do I still "peg the fun meter" with each race/run? Am I continuing to enjoy myself? (Yes!)
    And, am I continuing to develop a community of delightful, interesting people around. (Yes!)
    Not faster as the years roll on, but continuing to be HAPPY!

    I needed to hear this, too, even though I knew it. Last year, my first full year of training hard. So this year I realise that I need to target my races not expect progress all the time. I'm ocd with my garmin load focus at the moment. Bought my first watch last June and never thought to watch the watch, lol. Just carried on with my own training. This year, I'm obsessed with the load focus, and prob shouldn't be. This has messed me up a bit. Although I've been adding more anearobic sprints in. Think I need a coach 🤔. I'm more settled this morning now ive seen your video as I was panicking about my current progress. No 10k pb yet this year but 10 miles got one and 5 miles one too. Half marathon in April. I've got some more 10ks booked. I want to learn Ben and Mary. Much thanks to you both. Keep going your both fantastic.

    Unless a runner is under 22 years old, the 10+ year running life chart does not look like the one Ben drew…instead, it plateaus and then declines. No tree grows to the sky. 🌳 😃

    I love these type of vlogs, ur a v v ‘good’ talker Ben, I guess that’s why ur a teacher, u know exactly how to explain things clearly and concisely, I totally and utterly hear you when you talk, and I totally agree with what you have said today, I think it’s really hard not to judge ur fitness levels based on pace, it’s just a natural instinct to feel that you are beginning to lose fitness if you have a few hard / slow runs, it took me a good few years to understand that this simply isn’t the case, sometimes you just put so much pressure on yourself to run to a pace that even tho physically your actually in great shape, mentally you feel awful…… until the next good run that is, then you feel great and you wonder what happened from the last run to this run and the answer is more often than not, a simple shift in mind set - it has nothing to do with your actual physical performance but more to do with how you feel mentally …… crikey I think Iv just shown exactly why I am not a teacher 😂 anyway love this vid Ben - thanku 😊

    Thanks for the insights. I realized last training block that
    a) my easy runs were actually easy, so I was recovering correctly BUT
    b) my harder runs were also too easy AND
    c) even though I was doing strength training I was still neglecting certain muscle groups.
    I've changed up my training plan and am trying to lose a few pounds (not overweight but on the heavier end of normal). Hopefully this helps.

    My 34k run two weeks ago was fantastic, totally on pace and I felt good afterwards. Since then I’ve raced a 10k and was 18 seconds off my PB but now my last long(ish) run of 14k felt rubbish! Totally agree on the fact that progress is not linear.

    Especially in the first few kms i run, i always feel like shit! It seems that i was never running at all, but in the long term (the other lense) i run longer in that "shit time" than i could run continously in the beginnning.

    Noble & ideal, but not realistic for all, if you're a competitive runner and in a club where you see the same faces once or twice a month in races. Generally you pick 1 or 2 runners, familiar faces at a higher level you're aiming / aspiring to be at - and often credit them for pushing you, not all that dissimilar to the role of a 'rabbit' in races and you often become 'running buddies' that push each other. "Comparison" can be the metric of progress (and decline).

    I don't know how a Brit does what you do in that heat and humidity.... thats progress in itself just survive in those conditions, We are British and we need rain, sleet, wind and a bit of sunshine, and all in one day LOL

    It has been linear progression for me but I’ve only been running 3.5 months and top distance 21k which I have done twice. Most recent 21k was more difficult but I beat the first time by 15 minutes. I assume I will plateau out at some point.

    While I understand your intent behind encouraging people to compare themselves to the person they were to gauge progress, my problem is that when I do that it's depressing. I know that I'll never be able to do what I once could. I'm on the ever increasing downward slope of age and it's not fun at all.

      I feel your pain! I’ve been running for over 40 years and have more than 50,000 miles under my belt. The way I try to look at it now is that I’m doing the world’s longest backyard ultra and still moving..
      I can’t expect to knock out sub 7 or even sub 8 min miles after being out for that long…
