    Consistency, I've learnt, is probably the single biggest factor to being successful with your running. The mental game you have to play with yourself in the initial days/weeks/months, is probably more important than what you achieve physically. Once you've mastered the mental side, there's no stopping you! Hope you survived the crazy torrential downpour! :D

      The best part was seeing Winnie again I miss her 😊 thanks for the good advice. I may need to break up my runs since I'm getting into longer more time consuming runs now. 💖

    early morning runs are a blast, there is no people around and the air is fresh (atleast in my neck of woods). i just wish i could get up at 5:10 instead of my 0400 for them, but it's life haha. i'm fairly sure i wouldn't find the energy after work since most days get up to low to mid 20k steps+ the usual demolition stuff.
    Love the channel, thanks for all the great advice and tips!

    I’m with you on this one. I’m also a secondary teacher in Australia, but, also have 4 kids under 7. I find it so hard to find time and/or energy to get it done. Early mornings are key but sometimes the kids have the same plan 😂. I’m still very early in my running habit and really struggle.

      🙋🏾 Educator over here as well. Plus another job and single mom to 2 kids. I've picked running back up but find it hard to get out there some mornings. Afternoons are usually out of the question for me, but I definitely feel the struggle.

      Physiotherapist with 4 Kids from 3 to 13 here. I usually don't plan my 1-3 mid-week runs but rather use opportunities when i get them. Works OKish, but the long run at the weekend is my holy ritual and my wife and i have the agreement that i get up with the kids saturdays and let her sleep while i am good to go on sundays. Kept a good training rhythm for a 50k Mountain Ultra.

    My yearly distance goal is miles purposefully walked or jogged/run. Every 0.1 of a mile gets me closer. Those days I'm not feeling it, I often can get in 0.5- 1 mile walk. In the winter with shorter daylight I do my best to leverage a lunch time walk.

    What has helped me immensely is building my runs into my work schedule. I’m a teacher and I purposely scheduled myself for double preps in the morning 2 days a week, so I can get runs in. Those plus a Sunday long run, and I’ve kept a pretty good consistency of sessions for a few years now. Like Ben, I’m a PE teacher and I sold it to my principal that being in good physical shape is part of my job, so running during my prep times is me preparing for my classes.

    I normally get up at 4 or 4:30 am to have time for my morning run (most days I have to be home by 6am, when my partner is off to work; we have relatively young kids, so I must be home before she's out).
    The problem with this, however, is I rarely manage to go to bed before 8:30 pm or so (about the same time as the kids), and it takes me a while to fall asleep too, so on the whole waking up at 4am means I don't get enough sleep at night. Now *that* is a problem.

    I get up at 06:15 every day and fit training in early, I do lots of double days with a run and bike session. At the weekends I end up getting up at the same time to do ParkRun and on Sundays a group ride. As long as I structure in a recovery week every 4th week (I'm 58 so need a plan) I very rarely feel tired in the working day. My only difficulty is getting to bed early enough so that's something I'm working on with an aim to see an improvement by Christmas. Great video as always.

    Just to say I am going on vacation to Japan. I planned my running routes over there already and am excited. And I am looking forward to getting Pokari Sweat again 😂 And I agree on the fitting in runs, I try to get up early to make them happen cause I just struggle to run after work. But seen how my half marathon went yesterday I guess I have a little more training to do.

    Since I’m never a morning person and training is early Saturdays I definitely set things out in advance including making my protein drink for afterwards. I do it when I’m fully functioning-at night. Can’t sleep earlier, so a nap is expected. Wish mornings were easy, but this works for me.

  • @Nayz13
    @Nayz13 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hitting the snooze button is the worst thing you can do for having energy through the whole day. I only just learned this recently. I no longer need naps since putting my phone across the other side of the room.

    Because I've such a physical job, but also wanted to start running again, I couldnt ever muster the energy to run after work. I've always been an early riser, but my running was always been terrible in the mornings.
    It was annoying, but I've just embraced the change in ability, and just accept that morning runs ARE less good times, but actually I've started enjoying the slower pace, and now I'm improving again. Also the boost to the day after finishing a run by 6am is ace!
    When I am not feeling it, I just tell myself "don't break the routine, it'll be fine or it won't, but get out the door"

  • @joannemarkov
    @joannemarkov 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So I'm looking to step up from half marathons to the marathon level next spring. However, as a mom of three boys with schedule needs in the evenings and a secondary teacher who must be at work by 6:45, I have to do my running in the mornings before work. The time I begin running is really not flexible because my bedtime isn't going to get any earlier. I'm up at 4, out the door by 4:30, which only gives me ca. 1 hr - 1 hr 20 mins. On the other hand, I've missed running with my dog, but I don't like taking her on anything longer than 5 miles or on speed/tempo runs. A thought I had to increase my mileage was to do daily doubles. My morning runs (easy, tempo, speed, etc.) would remain where they are for my half marathon training, and I'd transform my evening walk with my dog into an evening run around our neighborhood. (The loop is 2.5 miles, and I could gradually transform this from a walk to a run, just as I did when I first got into running. Doing this up to 6x/week would add 15 miles eventually, which would bring my 35-40 miles/week up to 50-55 miles/week. Another concern is the "upgrade" to my long runs. I'm already hugging the 3 hr mark. (Today's 14 miles took me 2 h 45 m). I might have to do back to back long runs or doubles on long run day to get that a bit higher before the actual marathon, though I'm not too worried about that. Would it be too crazy to do a morning run and a relatively quick and super easy evening run each day?

    That is exactly what I do. Discipline is a key. I am privileged because I work from home and it allows me to keep running on my lunch breaks, I can fit in about 6k. I gave up mornings due to high pollution and 3 motorways crossing near my house. It is horrible. I hope to move one day to a cleaner area that's my next goal :) I have quite a demanding and stressful job so I have no energy for anything else apart from morning squats and stretches. I wish I had more time for everything, but mentally I struggle to fit in more 😢

    The main issue I have when I'm time crunched is that my partner doesn't run, so when I get home from work I just want to spend time with him 😂 so sometimes I do that instead of running as planned. Getting up early also isn't an option cause I already get up at 5 😱 but splitting the session in two is an excellent idea! 😁

    Working/Child-minding/Running a household literally takes up 7 am - 10 pm every day. So 6 am runs are the only solution! (It also helps if you live in the Med and you have 30+ degrees every day for months on end... :))

    I'm a teacher too, and find that after work I am really drained. Strangely I seem to hit a 'perky patch' at about 7pm and quite enjoy a night run. Wish I could drag myself out of bed for a before work run though. I do worry that I will be tired at work, so I was interested to hear you say you never feel that. Might just try a 30 min run to see. BTW, Mary, are you a sock, shoe, sock, shoe person? Looked like that in the video, whereas Ben a sock, sock person.

    You should really turn your music a bit down. The music is just barely low enough to understand you, but too loud to be "background music" I can ignore. I always feel like I have to listen to both, music and you, and it's really difficult for me to listen to what you say because of that.

    I find these tips quite ridiculous and obvious. If you get up earlier you have more time but you get less sleep. If I could go to bed earlier I would. There are no more hours in the day in whatever way you look at it. Getting up at 6 is almost comfortable...I do my workout 4.30 in the morning and still not enough time for everything...
