- Runners are a weird breed in the first places but there are certain things we do that take that quirkiness to a new level! And it's good to poke fun at ourselves from time to time.
So, how many of these 10 do you do (or have done?)

Thumbnail too damn accurate. Got back to my house from an easy+tempo 10km this morning and the distance on my Garmin? Yep, 9.94km. Continued running down the street like a lost puppy until it ticked over to 10 clicks.
one of the reasons i don't wear such a watch...
Me, all the time😂😂
You’ll NEVER catch me running a 9.94 km on purpose 😂
Literally just ran around my block to round up my distance from 19.4 to 20 even though my running session was time based..... 🤷♂
Corollary to the diet one: eating lots in the morning "because you're going on a run later", then something comes up and the run doesn't happen....
There’s also ‘speeding up when you see a stranger’ and ‘checking your shoe laces for the 10th time before the race’
And of course there's always a shoes that unties itself at the 10th km anyway lol
"...like a demented pigeon." 🤣😂
Ran 6.66 miles once and a friend commented on Strava that she would have walked in circles for another .1 just to avoid the "number of the beast!"
😊🤘@@LauraTrauth
The times that I've run past my house for a few hundred meters to round up the distance... :D
1. I don’t walk around, I sprint the distance.
2. I go hard at the start because my starting pace anchors my pace for the rest of the race. It’s like if I start at 90% effort, going at 85% effort later feels easy, but if I start at 80% effort, going up to 85% from there feels like trying to give over 100% effort, and 90% feels flat out impossible.
3. I need at least two pairs so I can run on alternate days. But I also need shoes for icy roads, shoes for trails, shoes for races, shoes for very long runs. . .
4. No superstitions here. But there is a degree of overthinking the kit I’ll wear on race day - which shoes, which shirt, which shorts or pants, whether my phone goes in a pouch or in an arm holster or a pocket, which energy chews to bring, whether to bring water or to trust what’s on the course, etc.
5. I used to be class III obese. No longer obese, I still track my calories, because my body is like “nah, you’re not full yet, keep eating. It’s fruit/yogurt/eggs/oatmeal/lentils/berries/protein shakes, you don’t need to worry about calories from that, no one gets fat from that.” But I have no real sense of satiation, so I really can put on weight from that.
6. I go before I go, but I also plan my runs with “are there places I can go while on my the run?”
7. Seeing people finishing a 40 minute 5k wearing Alphafly or Vaporfly shoes sure makes me feel something. Mostly, I’m irked at advertising and shoe sales people for selling people on the wrong shoe for their needs.
8. I felt a little off just after Christmas 2021. I had a sore throat, but I felt OK otherwise. The run went fine. Later that evening I did a Covid test and came back positive. Oops. I took the rest of the week off from running.
9. I have a rule: I run through being sore, I don’t run through pain. Yesterday I aborted a run after two kilometres. It was supposed to be a long run, but I had a bad cramp, and it didn’t work itself out, so I stopped. Also, outside of races, I trust my legs to let me know when they’ve had enough, and I listen to them. There have been no injuries to my legs from running so far!
10. Kilometres, because I refuse to support the tyranny of the Imperial system. People who use miles hate freedom.
I got the shoes one too 😂
My go-to race shoe is the Vaporfly and even for 5Ks, they are fantastic: light and whippy and after using them for the first time I improved my PR substancially! I didn't get your comment. Not sure how you can generalise with such a comment as this: 'Seeing people finishing a 40 minute 5k wearing Alphafly or Vaporfly shoes sure makes me feel something.' Nonsense!
@@itsianwood There are shoes that cost substantially less that will benefit a person running 5ks in over 30 minutes just as much. It’s like having a Ford F450 Super Duty truck when what you need a vehicle for is going to the grocery store once a week. Yeah, it gets the job done, but there are a lot of cheaper vehicles that would get the job done just as well or better.
Miles are better since you don't have to run as many to get the same result. ;)
Urination management is definitely a struggle on long runs. Oh that tree looks good 🌲
i used to do my long runs along a beach front and basically memorised how far apart all the publics loos were lol
That's what "period panties" are for! For women anyway. Just let it go - it will be absorbed! :-) Sorry for all you gents out there who don't have that option but at least you can go standing up if the need strikes during a long run.
@@LauraTrauthWhat period panties are you wearing!? It would be running down my legs... not to mention squishing around for the rest of the run! 😵💫 I run in the woods, the world is my urinal! 😂
I run in km, drive in miles, measure in grams, cups & pounds n ounces, weigh in stones & pounds and kg's 😂 totally mixed up or what? 😂 love the freedom 😂
Also, a scone is what Mary says😊
ha! I run in km, measure in grams, weigh myself in pounds and tenths of a pound, body temperature in fahrenheit, outdoor temp in celsius, and measure my body in inches (height in feet/inches)!
Rounder upper here 😂
Finished a 10k race recently stopped after the finish, got my phone ready to photograph a friend who was about to finish. He finished and kept running to complete the 10k for Strava 👍🏻
While I stood there, he was not the only one.....
I definitely round up my distances at the end of a run. I shouldn't care so much, but I do 😄
Many thanks for the great video - as always. I confess guilty of many of these: 1) Round up runs - Yes; 2) Start a race at the wrong pace - Yes; 3) Trainers - I have many which I rotate! So no to one pair; 4) Superstitions - Yes - wear the same kit for Marathons and Halfs...: 5) Eat whatever I like - Yes but try to be careful; 6) Never think about getting away with toilet - alway prepare, however, even then.... (so not guilty to this); 7) Cannot cheat the grind - always keep at it so fine; however, this leads to 8) Will go out when ill; 9) Likewise think that I can run when injured... 10). Miles is the only measurement for me! Oh and as for scones - only jam as cannot eat cream...... i look forward to the next video and stay happy running.
Using miles is more intuitive... there are 5km races, 10km races... haflmarathon is 21km, marathon is 42km...
So yeah... converting miles to kms keeps your head busy during races :D
I Think the correct formula for amount of shoes is N -1
Which translates as the amount of shoes it'll take for your other half to leave you...minus 1
That's s-1. This is rule #12.
RIP Kelvin Kiptum
"The mayonnaise years"😂😂
Km, and jam first, every time.
The mayonnaise years. Love it 😊
I only have 3 different trainers, but I have 6 pairs of each...
last year I did outrun a poor diet; I lost 8 kg on a single run, Ok that one run did take me 140 hours...
Guilty, guilty, guilty…. Guilty as charged in all 😂😂😂
My wife and i definitely follow that trainer formula.
For me it was "The mayonnaise years" 😂 gave me a belly laugh - thanks for that honesty. Also "portion distortion" yeah that's a big one for me. Thanks for the advice and the laughs. Lots of wisdom in here, great video.
Another one is continuing to use a pair of shoes a little too long just to reach a particular mileage. For example, insisting that, to get your money's worth, you get to 300 or 400 miles in a pair of shoes that have lost their cushion, when you should have retired them 50-100 miles earlier.
This is great, my 1st 50k started with a .5 mile hill. Of course I ran it hard. To the point where I think I was in first and all the other top runners were asking me who I was, Didn’t end well. I did finish
I can take a look at my shoes and convince myself I need new ones, but somehow, I can't get myself to throw out those same old shoes!
Why throw them out? Keep them as a remainder of the good old times.
Mine have several lives... from running, to casual wear, to yardwork/farm work. By the time they're at the last stage, I can't wait to throw them out! 😂
Outrageous ... jam first then cream! 😆 Points 1, 2 and 3 apply to me, then I felt quite proud of myself that the others didn't, until I got to number 10 ... 🙄 Kilometers for me ... Great video, thanks for sharing. 👍
Had only one pair which I also lived in, ran 30 miles a week ,no stretching no warn up or down ,no gel, no sports watch and still ran 34.17min 10k and 1.15 for half marathon,.I was in my late 20s,early 30s ,
Just to give you a heads up. I live in Cornwall, and erm, after the cream/scone comment, I could hear the pitchforks being sharpened.... 😮❤
I always always always have to go to the bathroom before I run or it's game over
I simply won't start my run until I'm sure I'm definitely "ready" lol. I live in fear of needing a 2nd #2 lol!!!
1 - Nope
2 - Of Course
3 - At least two, have to cycle
4 - Shave head clean before every race
5 - Nope, always balance diet
6 - Nope
7 - A little - but you can "buy time" with a good bike.
8 - LOL. Of course.
9 - Yep
10 - Most Americans still don't know what a kilometer is 😂
Fabulous list and every 'lesson' is one I have experienced. Also guilty of going out for a run in socks or shirts that failed the 'sniff test', because "I am just going to wash them later anyway".
Alright… too many of these are very relatable over the years. And now I want some scones. Good stuff!!
haha, love the "n+1"!
If you don’t need to go to the bathroom before a run.. yes you do, and twice 😂
I had a double today - ran a race through an injury in shoes more expensive than usual... That I only bought so I can complete the race with said injury 😁
Same!! I was doing the Reach the Beach relay, so I had a team counting on me. I got a stress fracture in my foot during training, so the running store put me in my first pair of Hokas a week before the race. 18 miles, no problems! Totally worth it! 😂
I thought of you two today when racing the Headcorn Half. I think your old video inspired me to book this race. Hope you are well.
n+1= my favorite equation!
I laughed at the thumbnail. So accurate. But in the last year, I’ve started to get better at not worrying about the exactness. But my superstition is that I can’t wear the race shirt on race day cause of course that means something is going to happen and I won’t finish it. That happened once with a race so obviously that was the cause. I’m appalled when I see all the people wearing the race shirt 😂
I heard about a study that runners who had sex the night before race day performed better on race day. It might not be true but who am I to argue with science?
😂😂
Subscribed … chuckled…
I definitely try to run through pain, it's really hard to keep myself from lacing up and heading out. Mostly bc I'm older and I'm convinced that all my pains are normal when you're older 😂😂
I’m pretty sure in another video, they’ve said not to keep running if the pain is greater than a 4 out of 10 (don’t quote me lol), and that is a principle that I have adopted, being that I tend to push through pain and have injured myself in the past because of it. I also think for me personally, it’s hard to differentiate between extreme discomfort and actual pain. For me it’s a fine line between those two and I’ve probably cut some runs short that might not have needed it, and conversely probably have kept running when I should have called it.
For the under the weather one, I've pushed too hard in the past. My January cold, I walked 1 and a bit miles (as that was the loop), because although my throat and nose feel 'bad', my legs felt okay and I needed to move a bit.
I have an annual goal of miles walked or jogged, so yes I'll walk part way up the block & back to round up some days.
With sneakers 👟, they change the versions, sometimes I will get 2 at the store so I don't have to break in new designs all the time.
1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. No (no superstitions here)
5. No (already overweight)
6. No (does not mean it always helped)
7. Yes (watch, shoes, treadmill)
8. Yes ( never felt it hurt me though)
9. Yes (hard to sometimes tell if it is one or the other)
10. No (but it is football ⚽️)
Good going!
Yes for #s 3, 8, and 9
I'm not a avid runner ,but Max 6 pairs of shoes , Buy 2 pair in winter on special and brake them in , 2 pair running 1 pr wet / mud / mostly used .1pr park run / long run and races . Last 2 pair 1 pr of old shoes for mowing / yard work and a newer pr that did not work out for running kept clean for outings / shops etc..
I can put a big tick next to at least 5 of these. Especially the bad diet one(usually with big portion too)
Guilty of all but excessive shoes haha. Also, I'm a numbers guy so I see no issue with rounding to the newrest whole mile (or km)!
I can say I have done many of the things in this video, the only one I would say I haven't is the KM to mile thing and that could be solely down to being from the USA and miles is just what I have known my entire life.....beside running 26.2 miles sounds way better then 42km (that just feels so much longer)
The scone thing really made me laugh :-) . A few points: 1.) Didn't understand the first one at all. What's the point of having a Garmin watch (or whichever brand) and not setting it to beep/vibrate at the end of your session/run distance? I've never finished under my allotted planned distance. It just can't happen (and as someone else mentioned - I am usually so aware of the end that I am sprinting to that end point) 2.) I've experimented with 'banking time' at the start of races. I think doing it a little is OK and can give you a better time as long as you don't go into the red. 3.) That's the first time I've heard of the foam in running shoes taking more than 24 hours 'decompact'. Is that a legit fact or just a guess?
1 - rounding up - no, always. I always do just b;ca OCD (really)
2- I alywas have a snotty nose no matter what, but I really really try not to start a race to fast
3. You need to at least alternate shoes daily to let foam decompress, but in addition I like to alternate the degree of drop. And then there are as noted road vs. trail, waterproof vs. not....
4. Habits - not many but I do like coffee before hand because it speeds up bathroom time and avoids sh*tuations but not for luck. I don't do anything for luck.
5. Low carb, clean food even though I run long distances!
6. Again - this is why coffee. Means I always take care of the toilet before even leaving the house and driving to the run! Never yet had a sh*tuation on a run thanks to caffeine.
7. Not into the cherry on top. Just grind it out
8. Not running, hiking, or at least walking isn't an option. I don't feel right if I don't at least walk 5k. Even with COVID I walked at least 5k a day.
9. When injured I went to a PT who adivsed me on how to at least keep moving, even at lower volume. He understood I wasn't going to be sedentary for even a day.
10. Moving is my mental health as well as physical, so I will get out, even if injured, and walk slowly or do what I can. Miles? I'd like to do 5-7 a day, but if I can't, I can't. I will get in 10 steps, even if slow as mud....
"walk around"? nope, KEEP running until you see a number that your inner monk can live with aka a "pretty" number
I guess I have to subscribe 😂. I have already subscribed so I guess I am a “dubble subscriber “ now 😊
What about coveting another runner's gear? ... Mary what brand are your sunglasses? They are superb! I need some of those :)
4:10 got it, so I need one more trainer. Would anyone like to go halves with me? They always seem to come in pairs.
I stopped being a rounder-upper. I doubt serious runners waste time on that and Ive started to act like the kind of person I want to become.
Did the ill one 2 weeks ago and was as ill as I've ever felt 4 hours later 😢 don't do it!
Sorry to read this! Hope you’re ok now? We’ve been there too! 🤦🏻♂️🤧
I thought it would be about getting in a rut of 10k workouts. Over and over
Brilliant video - don't all runners round up?! I'm not superstitious though...but it has to be kilometres 😂
10. I can definitely say, I've never had that argument. :D But a funny fact is that in Sweden we use miles for another distance. Miles, or mil as we call them, just means 10 km.
Hmmm, I'm a rounder upper if I'm on a distance plan, but currently my watch put me on a time-based one sooo...7.53km it is
1, 5 and 8. I live in Europe but get my running plans from English or American websites, so they're mostly in miles. I usually round up the mileage to the nearest km. So if I have to do a 6 mi run, it ends up being a 10k instead of a 9.6😅
Jam First!
I feel the number of shoes is point 3a and that 3b is justifying why we have so many pairs of shoes…
New prerace meal. Sneakers bar. 🤤
That no.3 .... Hurts my wallet xD
Ours too 😂
Only 8 still a ways to go 😂
Luckily there are places in the world (actually a lot of them) where miles don't exist :). 3/10 for me and I was already subscribed ;).
7/10
Ha ha awesome!
Rounder upper.
As a cyclist, I was looking forward to laughing at you silly runners.... and I'm guilty of all of it including "how many trainers do you have"
jam first in kilometres!
120 pairs of runners. 17 pairs of alphaflys
The last race I did I had to keep going for lika a hundred meters after the finish just so Strava would believe me I did 10k :D
You had me agreeing up until the scone debate...
1. Yes, but I maintain my pace (or even try to go faster) until I reach the desired distance
2. No, but it is the opposite for me, sometimes I feel like I could be pushing harder... but I don't wanna risk anything...
3. Yes-ish? Because I always wish I had more running shoes, *but then I'm too stingy to spend any more on shoes... so it balances out
4. No.
5. Yes. Sometimes I reward myself with an extra snack after a long run haha
6. No.
7. No. *see point 3
8. Yes.
9. Yes, and i think this is an intervention, because currently the area where my right shin meets my knee is starting to hurt, and I guess this is a sign to take a break
10. No, but it gets really annoying because I'm from a country that uses metric and every time I see a post that uses their running distance and pace in miles I have to convert them to get the context.
Damn! I'm guilty of 5/10 of them and I'm not even a regular runner! 😅🤣
❤
Oh, and if you have a Garmin, you know d@mn well that Strava will deduct 0.1, so if you've done 6.2, you'd better go to 6.21, or Strava will tell you that you didn't make your 10k....
The dreaded strava tax! 😂
Yeah I finished with 9 out of the 10 haha, so I'll give you a Sub.....
💯👍👍👍
The OCD in me (#1) says I’m running to the full mile! (Yep, said mile…I’m such a psychopath!) 😂
And yes, I DO need all them there shoes!!! (They must match the outfit) 😬
1. No.
2. No, don't do races.
3. Yes, I don't have other type of shoes.
4. Warming up counts as superstition?
5. I run to be able to eat ice cream without guilt.
6. No, my body is a clockwork in that realm.
7. I'm foam rolling my way to success.
8. Who hasn't?
9. Choose wisely the pain you want to bear in life.
10. Who hurt you so bad that you choose to use the imperial system?
Get out of the stoneage - metres and kms are used in the Olympics so use kms. Americans wont let go of the imperial system when obviously the metric system is the best.
You better not have just called me an American! Not that there’s anything wrong with Americans but that, my friend, is not me!! Unless you’re just shouting at the world in general 😂
Apologies - edited - i meant Americans in general. My mind was kilometers away...😀@@ThisMessyHappy
@@Terminatortx33 all good, was only joking anyway! 😊 but do agree, miles are stupid 😂
Confession time:
I need a bigger shoe rack.
I simply MUST wear a particular bright orange pair of undies every race I enter.
I stupidly ran through the first mild signs of injury a few weeks back, and I've now been rewarded with a moderate overuse injury that will mean no running for a month or so, and I'll probably miss my first half-marathon I planned to enter.
Break out the tiny violins, people. 😔
I had a bear in the woods moment this morning 5m in always take the handy Andy in a long run tho💩😃😃😃
I’m a kebab runner! I call it out as chicken and salad 😂😂😂
km and butter
When it's scon it's scone
8 out of 10…I passed! Or did I fail 🤷
Rounding up is actually more complicated. 😁
You will round up on your watch, great, but then Stava does its own calculation, which for me is always a shorter distance than my watch. So it may be again under your desired round number. 😂
The dreaded "Strava tax"! Yes I'll add another 50m in my 10k just to be safe. I learnt it the hard way on my first 10.01km all out effort in my watch and yes Strava tax deducted 9.99km.
I always had a little extra … just in case 😂
tbh. i think i own to little running shoes because i use all my shoes over 1000k for carbon shoes or maybe even 2000k for easy day shoes
I use miles. However, in my rational mind I know kilometers are better. Why? The smaller distance is objectively better for more differentiation. I just use miles because that's what roads are in. But I separate those miles into meters when training any intervals. 400. 800. Or 1600 meters ≈ 1 mile.
If lifting n+1 from the cycling community do not forget to mention s-1. That one is important.
I’m a triathlete so I can use the equation across borders 😉😂
@@ThisMessyHappy it's a brilliant equation, but not everyone has a wife that goes running with them and is incredibly supportive of the hobby, that s-1 part is crucial information lol.
rounding up...oh yeah....i'll even round up my cumulative weekly kms, if i finish a run and that number is sitting on .8 or .9 i will legit crank our another 100 or 200m just to see a zero. yes, you can make the very logical and rational argument that it all adds to you total but on a completely irrational level....that .9 bugs the 🤬 out of me...
P.S. cream first??? nooooooooo
Run in miles, its a less scary smaller number, but brag about it in the bigger KM number 😂
1. Yes,
2. No
3. No... Yes...? I mean, i have three pairs. That's still reasonable. And one of the has studs, so super reasonable! 😂
4. No
5. I did eat whatever i could 😂
6. No
7. No
8. Yes
9. Yes. But s&c, drills, streching etc... They're all a scam! Big pharma stuff! 😅
10. No. I have smart friends!😊
You have 4 pairs! I’m counting wooly socks 😂
@@ThisMessyHappy I stand corrected.
Hi, my name is Jani and I have a problem! 🤣
Kilometres
Definitely kilometers rather than miles… because it‘s easier to run 5k than 5mi…😅
"The evidence shows" (about foam compaction and shoe rotation). I hear that a lot, but I've never SEEN any actual empirical evidence. And it would be an easy thing to produce. Put some shoes in a machine that repeatedly compresses them, do one set of pairs every day for say, an hour. Do another set every other day. At the end compare the durometer readings.
The fact that NO shoe company has published this data makes me pretty sure it's just bullshit. You can wear the same pair of shoes every day, and they'll last just as long.
