i got a 6 in my GCSEs meaning i cant do a level maths, however i managed to convince the head of maths to give me a 3 week trial to see if i can do it, this will help so much thanks!
Yes, I think it will be a challenge but I can't say for sure without knowing you or how you have go to that grade, which is a good grade, but a bit less than I'd recommend for A-Level usually. Doing AS maths is an option many students in your situation end up finding a good compromise. Great that you're enthusiastic about - if it's something you enjoy and know that you want to do well with then keep working at it. Success can come, but you may need to be realistic about how quickly you can get there!
I’m halfway through year 12 rn and I’m failing lmao. I realise it’s probably because I missed the first few weeks of school so what ever foundation a level maths built on I don’t have it 💔
Your second point makes it so clear what my error was when self studying gcse higher maths - I thought I could do everything alone using only the CGP coursebook and past papers, without seeking help from a tutor (I'm a big grown up now who was home "educated"). When the exams came this year, what was frustrating was finding lots of the harder questions too obscure and confusing, and so much of what I thought I was comfortable with ended up being utterly useless. Clearly I didn't put enough effort into problem solving :( I wonder, had I put more effort into that, I could have enjoyed it all more. Now my plans for A-level are pretty shaken...
I'm sorry it didn't go as well as you had hoped, but I'm pleased this video has helped you find some clarity. You might like to take a look at my course 'Get Ready to Start A-Level maths' (it's free for the first 3 days) which covers the transition from GSCE to A-Level including many of these harder problems.
Hi Kevin, I always get 90%+ in my tests and I am predicted a grade 9 but I always get silver in the Maths Challenge (I'm in year 10). What can I do to get better at UKMT, AND I want to take maths and further maths A-LEVEL . Is that viable?
Just take subjects you are good at in 6th form. I made a terrible decision to take maths at A' Level and had to abandon after 6 months into the course. Eventually I took an essay subject instead and did very well. There is a huge leap between GCSE and A' Level. Your teacher knows best. Don't think you know better than him/her....
