    Hey! Engineering student here that LOVES MATH... I enjoy your videos but I quite disagree with the advice that you give here... You see, there's a piece of the puzzle that is FUNDAMENTAL, yet I think most people miss when it comes to approaching math, physics or really any other subject that has to do with problem solving. It's not about how many practice questions do you do, it's about understanding fundamentally the why behind every step in the problem solving... I've gotten straight A's on all of my college math classes so far (I'm currently taking series and transforms, my last math class) and in most of them I didn't solve most of the problem sets that we were given, I only focused on a few key problems, but I FOCUSED A LOT IN UNDERSTANDING THE WHY BEHIND EVERYTHING. I used THE FEYNMAN TECHNIQUE and tried to explain all of the concepts on my notes as if I was a professor, tried to go through every derivation for every formula I encountered, tried to ask DOES IT MAKE SENSE? for everything that I was learning... Let me give you a concrete example: let's talk about the 2nd derivative test to determine the nature of a local extreme point. What if instead of memorizing the rules you thought a little bit about why they work the way they do: a derivative indicates the rate of change of a function in a given point (think of a downward facing parabola for a simple example), i.e. how it behaves near the surrounding points. If you take the slope of the tangent line at any of the extreme points and their surroundings, you see that for a local maximum it starts positive, decreases to zero and then becomes negative. If you plot the derivative at this surrounding points, you will notice it resembles a line of negative slope (again, taking the parabola as an example) and so if you were to take the derivative of this derivate (i.e. the second derivative), you'd end up with a NEGATIVE VALUE, indicating that the rate of change of the rate of change is decreasing. And that's how you can intuitively remember and understand these important math concepts FOREVER, without having to write flashcards or do a ton of problems in an attempt to become a problem solving robot. Math is all about intuition, and once we understand that, I think that we'll open a whole lot of possibilities for everyone to learn math better. Thank you

      I 100% agree. I'm not great at math but the way it is taught by most teachers, it is never explained as to WHY those concepts are being used and what they correspond to

      I’ve used to feel that way as well because I use to have the Oxford Edexcel A level Maths book to work and revise from alongside the teaching from my teacher and they are not exactly the best book to revise from. I’ve got a B in the end of year exam.
      This year, I’ve got the Pearson books for Year 1/Year 2. With step by step examples of exam questions on each topic, plenty of sample questions and a sample paper and I have to say, my grades are improving massively. Every topic test now, my teacher sets us, I get out of 50 like 48 or 49 compared to getting like 25/26 last year. I would recommend you getting these books also for Stats and Mechanics. It just makes Maths just that much easier!

I also use sites such as PMT to revise for general notes and how to gain marks by trying a few questions and checking the mark scheme in questions by topic. Also, try MadasMaths site. Has a lot of sample papers created for our spec for both years. Just remember to go to the 2019 new spec section. Hope that helps!

    Finished single maths in a year and touched a bit of further. I found single maths rather straightforward if you did addmaths at GCSEs. Further maths, however, is hell (I'm getting a headstart on it). I would even say that the jump between single maths and further is larger than that of between GCSES and A-levels.
    Nevertheless, I'd suggest doing past questions by topic available on physicsandmathstutor each time you learn a new topic. That's the main reason I got 95+% on all of my tests :)

    I'm doing Maths and Further Maths at A-level and have done some revision on the newer topics and did Maths and Further Maths GCSEs so, hopefully, it won't be a drastic jump and I very much agree with the part about practicing. I think practice questions are the best method of revision to do and I highly doubt I would have gotten the 9s that I did if I didn't do a whole bunch of practice questions (for reference, I got a low 7 at the end of Year 10, in my mock, then got a 9 in both Maths and Further Maths in my actual GCSEs).While I think I do naturally enjoy Maths, I don't always understand it naturally so I think that making sure you understand a topic as well as doing a bunch of practice questions is probably a good move too. I am speaking as someone who hasn't even started Sixth Form or College yet so I might not actually have the best advice lol.

  • @joshejesus1568
    @joshejesus1568 6 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    Maths is not a hard subject. Just requires you to follow logical instructions in a particular order. The difficulty comes when you don’t know the instructions in which allow you to solve any given problem

    • @gamma_dablam
      @gamma_dablam 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      joshe Jesus A Level is very very different in that regard.
      You can’t memorise approaches to questions in A Level because there are far too many question types (LOTS of proofs)

    • @joshejesus1568
      @joshejesus1568 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Aayush Ganesh look, a-level may have more approaches to problems than at gcse, but the memorisation of rules and instructions is absolutely vital to any maths problem anywhere. You cannot simply answer a maths question and expect to get is correct without knowing what to do. That is kind of the whole point in having instructions and rules in the first place. In mathematics for example, without the use of rules you could say 1+1=3 or 2+2=5. You get the idea. But the fact that a-level maths ha many instructions is part of what gives a-level maths the impression of challenge, not so much the math it’s self.

    • @gamma_dablam
      @gamma_dablam 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      joshe Jesus you have a point.
      While knowing maths is vital at a level, you have to genuinely understand the maths well and how you apply it, rather than just memorising ways of solving things as is usually done at gcse level (at least, 40-70% of gcse Level)
      Basic principles (eg axioms) just have to be learnt or taken for granted as they are. But more advanced material has to be properly understood to be applied. The understanding is what makes A Level maths as difficult as it has a reputation for. Further Maths is even worse in that regard

      Aayush Ganesh I disagree with the fact that understanding the mathematical concepts in a-level is hard. From my experiences, and from many of the people I know, it is the memorisation of ‘how’ something is solved that proves to be challenging rather than why something works the way it does seeing as it is difficult to, ”memorise approaches to questions in A level”.
      Overall, I think it depends on the way you think about a-level or further maths. It is designed for people who enjoy the subject and who are willing to put in the work to understand or to remember the concepts and the rules well enough to do well in the final exam(s). However, with this is mind, I don’t think that a-level maths is quite the unkillable beast that it’s made out to be most the time.

      joshe Jesus Yh. I will say I kinda disagree with you, but that’s not an issue.
      Maths is probably 7th or 8th on the list of hardest A Levels.
      Computer Science and French are both harder than maths.
      Imo, the list, down to Maths, is like this ...
      1. Physics
      2 Chemistry
      3. Biology (yes it’s heavy on memorisation and there’s loads of content, but the content is not difficult to understand. The amount of it is why it’s still third)
      4. Further Maths (what I’ve looked at, which is most of the course, does not seem particularly hard compared to how it’s made out to be. But still very difficult)
      5. Computer Science (conceptually difficult subject that requires something most people don’t have. A mixture of practical and theoretical prowess)
      6. French (requires a diverse skill range, and good memory. A hard combination)
      7. Maths (same deal as further maths but much easier)
      No. Maths is not an unkillable beast. People in the UK just think it is to console themselves when they don’t connect with the subject and thus do badly

      Fredy Ty I was predicted a 7/8 but ended up with a 5. My school required you to get a 6 in order to do the course. Well I ended up on results day picking up psychology when really maths was all that I wanted to do. I retook maths even though I passed it as I wasn’t happy with my grade. I decided this in October so I was quite late as the exam was in November. So I retook and ended up with an 8. After that what happened was I ended up with an ABE in my year 12 exams (E in psychology lol) so I couldn’t carry on with the course. I had to either pick up a Cambridge pre u which is like an A level equivalent I think , or stay behind a year. I chose to pick up maths and stay behind the year. So in my final year all I have is maths as I will be doing my two other A levels exams this school year. So now I’ll be finishing a year late but at least I’ll be doing maths. Hopefully you do get that 6 but just know you can still do maths if you retake and stay back a year :)

      Personally I found A level maths to be quite straightforward especially compared to chemistry and physics. At A level you mainly focus on algebra so if you were quite comfortable with that at GCSE then go for it. Also it's definitely worth taking because it's regarded quite highly and it will make life a lot easier in chemistry when doing calculations (not sure about biology though).

      M4D RuSSiAn I TOTALLY AGREE. I would say Math is the easiest out of the 4 and I take all of them. It is super straightforward. The good thing for me is that I pick up the concepts easily so I just need to do lots of practice.

      Aena Mustafa If you have already taken the other 3 then I recommend u take maths too, depending on what course you want to do. If you're thinking about whether you can handle it, it just depends on your work ethic. If you work well from the start and just stay on top of ur work it should be fine.
      I take all 4 of those subjects for a levels and I would say since I just started chemistry is the most difficult but it is so interesting, I don't notice the difficulty. Physics and chemistry get difficult very quickly so you need to MAKE SURE u are in it for the long run. If u need any more info, just let me know!

    • @alaibrahim8530
      @alaibrahim8530 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aena Mustafa Well, it depends on which course you're planning on taking. If it requires maths then I recommend you take it but if it doesn't then you don't need to. The good thing is that the chapters at the beginning are easier but 4-5 is quite a lot! You really will need to put in lots of effort to catch up and so on because maths is like building a house, you have a bad base and it's all over. Extra classes can help with that because the main thing in maths is doing exercises if you learn and understand concepts quickly, you'll be fine. 😁
