I was thinking the same for example: Toph is strong but more precise and concentrated. Bumi is colossal movement and strength. When I really think about it I don’t think Toph could take back Ohmasu by herself at her age.
Actually, Toph's "Greatest Earthbender" title is self-proclaimed. Moreover, walking around proclaiming that you are "the greatest of all time" in anything, but particularly in something with no definable metric to measure greatness, is a ridiculous way to conduct oneself, period. However, in the context of Chinese Martial Arts, and East Asian Confucian Philosophies, upon which all bending is based, which stress self-discipline, restraint, and humility, such conduct is obscene. Toph would earn herself the top spot if she displayed humility.
Toph has in-depth senses to pick up Bumi every single move no matter what. That's why she can counter with precise assistance. Bumi has raw power and and experience. But, nothing gets pass the fact that Toph can adjust the adapt accordingly. Bumi and Toph are the thee top earthbending masters in their era.
Actually, she doesn't have the ability to win automatically. Toph has one fundamental and overwhelming weakness, which is glaringly obvious. She can't see anything aerial or airborne. To see, Toph must see the vibrations, particularly insofar as they connect to the earth beneath her feet. Should Bumi make an attack from the air, he has the advantage there. Any Bender like Katara, Aang or Azula who can defy gravity, even someone like Azula, Ty Lee or Suki, who have god-tier martial arts, can defeat Toph easily. Toph is overwhelmingly strong if you fight her on her own terms, but if Toph's opponents don't fight on those terms, they can win by exploiting Toph's gaping weak point. They actually explore this a lot in the comics.
@Toph Beifong you portray some of Toph's abilities wildly inaccurately. Toph is remarkably strong, but like the boulder she throws at Aang, she's not invincible. She has distinct weaknesses. While Toph does have scenes where she dodges things in air and has a comic scene where she sees with shoes on, these are inconsistencies. The source material does a poor job of providing consistency in Toph's abilities, often including these things for ease, instead of having a consistent approach. However, when Toph's ability is disected and deconstructed, in both Last Airbender, and later in Korra, Seismic sense extends from the feet into the earth, sensing vibrations. It does not work on wood, does not work on water (note the Serpent's Pass) nor on air. That is the entire point of Aang winning their fight, ans the source of Toph's nickname for Aang. Toph also makes regular comment that she can see less clearly with shoes on. Her fight with Yaling deconstructs her ability at some length and shows her encounter considerable difficulty with even another earthbender using aerial attacks. Once Legend of Korra starts, the Seismic Sense ability is very explicitly linked to the feet and the earth. Even Azula, when she was without bending, was such a significantly talented martial artist as to be able to evade and get past Toph, meaning Suki and Ty Lee would have no trouble either. The early examples are not proof Toph can see in the air or on other surfaces, merely that Toph's abilities were not fully defined yet. I'd recommend checking this. The way the dialogue is written for the older characters is just weird. It isn’t that iroh would never cheer on a fellow old guy in a friendly match (even if he is all about raising up the next generation, he’s never had a problem reminding them to respect their elders) it’s that he’d never say “Represent!”
They were having so much fun. For once, they could unleash without fear of killing their opponent, they could simply bend to their hearts content. They were smiling the whole way through because they'd both had found someone they could call an equal. It was both exhilarating and very surreal, no way they wouldn't get lost in the battle.
I mean, having an equal in skill is fun to play against as it makes everything more intense pushes you to your limit. It's not too easy that it wasn't a fight and not too hard that you can't tell what hit you.

@@fuckel98 lets be honest Toph at times got plot armor, the best earthbender in a super continent (EK is the size of africa, europe and asia COMBINED) was a underage blind girl with no combat experience (barring a arena/tournament style war) and she invents metal bending too... and never seeing a sandbender in her life she learns sandbending... and catches azula off guard making her trip during the episode "The Chase"

It wasnt just picked up automatically even for her, that is not plot armor. She learned from the original earthbenders, and has a stronger connection to earth because of it. Its fleshed out and not just handed to her despite being a prodigy.

This would actually be an interesting fight and I know some people would say Toph would win due to her connection to the earth and being able to sense everything Bumi would do, but Bumi also displayed an extremely rare talent by being able to Earthbend with only his face and while suspended in the air without being in physical contact with any earth. I'm sure Bumi would catch onto Toph's in ability to stop attacks from the air and could propel himself in the air then Earth bend some rocks at Toph to distract her then land a flying blow to her head.

Toph doesn't just rely on her seismic sense, but her hearing as well. I don't think Toph can't tell if someone is bending Earth at her midair, since even that dude in the arena where they found her was thwarted when he was throwing rocks at Toph while swinging on ropes.

Toph is more powerful than him proof being it took him a lot of effort to push Ozais statue however it took toph the same amount of energy to hold up a library the size of a city from sinking to the spirit world and 3. Bumi fought a much less experienced aang who had never been in battle against an earth bender and was still learning A LOT season 2 aang would easily end bumi.

They're evenly matched in pure earthbending muscle, but Bumi is faster and more durable whereas Toph has a more solid defense. If they were to go all out, I'd say Bumi would win due to superior stamina but it would take him a while.
I would say toph is stronger in terms of earthbending muscle. When Bumi takes back Omashu we see him visibly struggle to lift up that large statue of Ozai...Toph held up a ginormous library for what must have been about 5 minutes (even though she was on sand!). + When the sandbenders are stealing appa she lets go for a moment to try and stop them and we see how quickly the library would be sinking without her! I also don't think think Bumi is definitively faster. Sure when we see her fight Toph is often stagnant because she uses neutral jing a lot as she needs it to see. Especially since when we are first introduced to her at Earth Rumble, speed is not something she needs to use to win - although that episode makes a point of showing just how insanely fast her reaction time is. Either way as she travels with the gaang she improves on her physical speed drastically. We begin to see the development at the end of season 2 - but by the day of black sun her fighting style has become much more mobile. Also, at this point in the series sand is not as much of an issue for her. I mean at the start of sozins comet when they are on the beach she is perfectly happy to be on the sand and even says "I've been working on my sandbending." So Bumi turning the ground to sand wouldn't 'blind her.' Bumi is also very loud and hearing is her secondary method of seeing anyway.
@@Eleicus the struggling to lift the statue doesn’t really apply since he wasn’t bending the statue itself but the smaller rocks he had attached to it, so using those to lift something heavier is bound to be harder Bumi is definitely faster from the way he túnnels the ground to move instantly and how agile he was. The fact that Toph is more static only shows that she doesn’t have the movement feats. As to the sand, we only saw her bend wet sand and the whole point is that sand doesn't transmit vibrations so that shouldn't change. Anyway the sand point if the sand point still makes more sense than the idea of a master earthbender with hundred years of experience getting taken down by something like a cloud of dust, specially since he can tunnel and has taken rock to the faces and laughed while turning them into dust himself. In contrast, Toph was getting tired in mid battlefield in the comics. Bumi is also very unpredictable and very smart so his fast movements and power could allow him to constantly attack Toph until she got tired and her better defense failed.

Toph was not just lifting - she was stopping something from sinking, for a longer period of time. Also the inside of the library was not entirely made of earth, ignoring the buildings structure; we are talking about shelving, millions of books and a planetarium. Although admittedly I don't think either bender would be able to perform the other's feat, not in the same way at least. Toph has tunneled underground. She did it in bitter work. Regardless it would be unwise for Bumi to do that, considering she would actually be able to see him better that way - and potentially crush him. When she used the dust cloud at Earth Rumble 6 - one of the benders tunneled underground and it was futile. Bumi's greater advantage would be his ability to launch himself into the air (as he often does) where she can't see him. (provided he can suppress his trademark mad laughter / grunting sounds haha) I re-watched the beach scene and they are far enough away from the water for the sand to be dry. When Zuko attacks them, he kicks up clouds of sand as he runs around destroying the sand sculptures, which likewise releases puff of dry sand into the air. Toph showed great speed when she used her metalbending suit on the airship; and after she escaped from Xin Fu and Master Yu she neutralized them before they could even respond, then using earthbending to run back to Ba Sing Se. So she has shown she is capable of impressive speed. I don't disagree with you on the endurance front. Bumi has shown greater endurance than Toph. But I would say Bumi is more inclined to throw a barrage of large rocks when fighting whereas Toph favours more minimal & versatile (but highly effective) techniques. I think that's in large part to conserve her energy, but it also shows her killer accuracy. I think in this comic (& the comics in general) her bending style does not translate well (I can see why, as an illustrator myself, a lot of her techniques would be difficult to show & take up more panels than they're worth). Her minimal style best shown in her fights as the as the blind bandit. I would also say that: Bumi is more skilled on the battlefield, but toph really shines in duels, as they require less stamina. She has also shown immense adaptability to different fighting styles and versatility in her responses to them. Her and Bumi are alike in that way. I wouldn't give either of them the edge for outside of the box thinking (even if that box is made of metal haha). I'm not saying she would definitely win or anything! The thing about Bumi is we haven't seen nearly as much of his bending, so we can't really know for sure. It's just fun to speculate :)
I agree the plot was not as good but you do realize toph held a library the size of a city up all by herself while it was sinking to the spirit world. She’s always been an extraordinary bender and is honestly much more powerful than bumi(mostly due to him being out of his prime but toph isn’t in her prime either) also characters like katara have also always been extremely OP the steam cloud she made in s3ep1 was a massive display of pure water bending power.

to throw a rock, bumi has to get the rock somewhere I always thought that toph with her seismic sense calculated the size of rock their opponent had moved, and the direction and everything at least thats how I think what happens why this strategy doesnt work when shes on an ship? well probably because she is on an ship, which is floating on water so she cant really tell whats happening outside her ship
as fun as that was to listen to, I highly doubt we'll ever get a part 2, or if we do I highly doubt we'll actually get an ending to their "fight." Both Toph and Bumi are beyond incredible benders from their generation, and while it would be really cool to actually see them fight to see who would win, I have a feeling that's not something anyone's gunna be eager to make canon anytime soon...
I agree that the Iroh quote is out of place, but not for the same reason. Although the wording itself is definitely off, I don't think it's the reaction itself is unlike him. I actually think intensity of the drawn facial expression is the most jarring part. I mean even though he's very wise, he's also pretty goofy; as much as he's all about peace, we know he appreciates the bending arts. It's reasonable to assume that he would enjoy watching the other elements engage in friendly sparring. It also makes sense for a firebender, given the elements associations. What is reeeeally off is the context. We know this takes place during Sozin's comet. In that episode he is probably the most serious we've ever seen him. From emotionally reuniting with Zuko, to his speech about destiny, the tone shift doesn't add up. Even if he didn't disapprove of the fight, the enthusiasm is strange. But saying that, Sokka is also off!! Sure we know Sokka as this goofy dude, but he is serious about the war. Also...Master Piandao is right there. As much as Piandao is aware of this part of Sokka's personality - I don't think Sokka would be comfortable showing it to this extent. Honestly I think the whole comic is unrealistic, but it's still a fun read. I wish they would have set the fight post-war.
Toph not wanting to confront kuvira at her old age and bumi wiping out and freeing a whole city while trapped in a coffin makes me think bumi is definitely stronger.
Wel... where is Aang or Roku at 112 years of age? In ground.. It doesn't mean they were weaker than Bumi. Also when Toph faced Kuvira she decimated her forces.
This the epic battle we’ve all been searching for, the fight between a crazy hunched back 100 year old man and a sassy tiny and blind twelve year old girl.
Bumi:I am over 100 years old,the enemies got prepared with heavy tanks and super buffed by Sozin's comet,but i STILL joined the fight to beat them up! Toph at 80 years: I'm too old to fight anymore.My back hurts.
To be fair, Toph was not too old fight, nor did she showcase that in her actions. In both the comics and TLOK, she fought. Also, her TLOK feat especially is seriously overlooked and underrated. People forget how overpowered Kuvira's mecha tanks were. Even Bumi would've been impressed by her ability to take multiple of them down in *one swift move* with enough precision not to hurt anyone in her family who was surrounded by them. That was insanely impressive for *anyone,* let alone a bender of her age. That said, Toph's feats against Kuvira's army in TLOK, while very impressive, fall short compared to 112-year-old Bumi's of taking down iron statues in minutes and *using them against an army.* Him being 25 years old than she was in TLOK just adds insult to injury. Furthermore, him fighting the army head-on instead of by surprise like Toph did, once again, makes him *much* stronger than she was at 86. And throwing in the fact that he was suspended in a metal coffin in midair for *months on end,* but still accomplished that, just makes it a wash in his favor. And finally, the fact that he didn't even have any back pains makes me wonder if it would even be a fight, because Bumi would smash her. Toph at 86 is no slouch , and is definitely very impressive. Her feat of taking down that small unit of Kuvira's army, with how overpowered those robots were and *especially* up against highly skilled metalbenders as opposed to the Fire Nation's incompetent fodder or even the Dai Li, makes her very impressive. But as it is, her feats fall way short in front of Bumi, and he rolls her easily, if not effortlessly, in a fight. He did more at an older age without the element of surprise or back pains afterward.
I honestly think it's impossible to say, or at least its a draw. Toph can feel every little shift in the earth and react accordingly which puts her leagues above even earthbending masters but bumi is in a different class. Not only is he crazy powerful, but he's able to bend with the slightest twitches, like when he broke himself out of a metal box with only his face to work with. Toph might have a harder time reacting to and countering his attacks
I think at the time of fighting bumi has more power as an earth bender. The guy can earth bend himself out of a metal coffin with just his chin and is capable of blasting firebender tanks into the sky and stacking them perfectly on top of each other etc.. and is more wise despite his goofiness.. I think toff is a greater earth bender, she is a kid still and more than likely beats bumi as she progresses in experience and age. Also inventing metal bending is awesome!
Toph has metal bending, could hold up an entire library that was huge (like the size of a city or some crap), can make smoke bombs to see when people who aren't blind/use vibrations in earthbending can't. For people who are arguing to the fact that Toph is weaker because Aang beat Toph meanwhile Bumi beat Aang. You're wrong. Sure, that happened but is invalid right now. Toph is, 1. blind and uses vibrations to see, if Toph were a real person and was here she'd probably be waving her hands across her eyes right now, 2. Aang was more advanced at the time he met Toph - he had fought Bumi so had more experience with earthbending, 3. Bumi had known Aang since he was young meanwhile Toph and literally basically anyone in the ATLA universe hadn't seen airbending for a 100 years, plus Toph was pretty young so probably didn't even know much about airbending in general. Just because Bumi is not in his prime doesn't mean he's better. He COULD be better but he's not. We're talking about this moment in the comics where Bumi and toph are fighting. Now, onto reasons why Bumi is good/rebuttals of Toph's points? Bumi = more experience due to old age. Just because Bumi knew more about airbending just shows he knows more about other bending styles while toph doesn't, meaning he also is better at things Toph isn't good at and can make up for everything Toph can except for certain things (vibrations, metalbending) Bumi has a stronger and tougher body than Toph. Okay I don't have any more points but these are rebuttals to the rebuttals: While you say that Bumi knew more about airbending, that doesn't matter since this fight is about Toph vs Bumi, two earthebenders. "except for certain things," vibrations and metalbending are big things so actually matter a lot, plus even so, Toph can do all of the things Bumi can except probably better? The only thing she can't do is fight airbenders and lavabend, something Bumi can't do either. "everyone is just bias to toph" For good reason too, Toph is one of the most powerful earthebenders, created metalbending and many other things. She also has the neutral jing, something Bumi didn't have and so he told Aang to specifically find someone who had this neutral jing. And toph has that. He told Aang to find a teacher who was skilled with Neutral Jing *while he was exercising that very same Jing,* I don’t know what you’re trying to get at, Bumi has neutral Jing too, spent days to weeks in a cramped metal box waiting for the right opportunity. There’s also the fact that it took all she had to hold on to that library, Bumi has better casual feats, things that can be done effortlessly and will be more valuable in a fight than something that takes every ounce of your energy. Metal bending isn’t really much of a factor unless the fight is happening in a city or something, the standard setting for ATLA fights is usually small villages and/or wilderness, where the only thing that matters is standard Earth bending. There’s also the fact that if Toph does manage to get through his defenses, Bumi’s body can take a lot more punishment, Toph, a 4 ft something prepubescent girl will get taken out a lot quicker than Bumi, who has shown a lot of agility and resilience. And whether you believe it or not, there is such a thing as Toph bias, a member of the main cast, sassy, no nonsense, and all around awesome, Toph will be unconsciously favored by most of the fandom simply by virtue of how awesome she is and the amount of time she’s had to shine compared to Bumi.
well said. but what u said about lava bending doesn't make sense. lava bending is a super advanced fire bending move NOT EARHBENDING. we only ever see an avatar while in the avatar state bend lava. and the only 2 avatars we ever see do it are Roku and the previous fire bending avatar. LOK doesn't count. Its garbage and has no place in the ATLA universe. best to imagine it never happened.

toph is definitely the best. she may be blind but she can see everything that's happening around her, no one can sneak up on her (unless their coming from the sky). she also introduced metal bending to the world. like she may have been twelve but she is definitely the greatest earth bender of all time
I like how Zuko was the one to stop Toph from sparring. It shows how he cares about her. I don’t see them like a sibling relationship, actually more like a couple. Although, some people might think it’s strange because of the age difference the time of the series took place.
Just finished binge watching the show for the first time. Bumi has far greater threshold of raw power and speed. He wins on very fast, overwhelming attack, utilizing a great deal of thrown projectiles to get the job done. He stacks whole tanks and leaps great distances, thinking outside the box for new attack angles. However, he seemed to recognize that his methods are his own, and aren't good for teaching, especially beginners. In contrast, Toph manipulates the earth around her in counterattacks. A majority of her moves is about dislodging and upsetting her opponent(s), and using such manipulation for defense. Then she waits for the proper time to execute an attack. She's also a greater fighter against multiple opponents in this way, precise and expending minimal energy creativity to take out her targets. Her most powerful feat I think was stopping/slowing the library from sinking into the sand As far as metalbending goes, Toph uses it defensively and manipulates it used as a defense or rigidity, not really for offense. Given some metal, it would be very close, because Toph could create superior defenses against Bumi's attacks and throw him off balance and counter his avalanches and tossing boulders. Simply enclosing herself in rock or metal gives her that defensive edge she needs to hold out, upset his stance, and take him out. In the event they keep going, Toph's youth and efficiency I think will eventually out-do Bumi's raw power and stamina.
Bumi wins. I do think Toph has a great chancemof defeating him, but Bumi's raw power, experjence, and crazy earth bending that you wouldn't normally notice he's already performing can out match Toph's sensor ability. (Sensor cauz I forgot what it's really called)

He fought aang at the start of the series when all Aang had was airbending which is the opposite to earth, and by the time they met Toph he was a water bending expert. Also Toph invented metal bending

I think they’re both the most powerful earth bender in their own way, with Bumi representing the best of the old style (aka being able to bend a huge mass of boulders and rocks) and toph representing the new style (more coordinated, specific attacks with her seismic sense and metal bending)

I do think Toph is the greatest earthbender but you gotta have respect to Bumi ….. at his age he is still one of the the most powerful benders in the series but imagine him in his own prime young age, he must have been as powerful as prime Toph if not better…… besides in legend of Korra old toph is a bit weaker and she does say she can’t handle the fight anymore ( she was in her 70s while Bumi was above 100)

I read this strip like yesterday, and I absolutely hate it. This occurs during Sozen's Comet! It's awful pacing, there's absolutely no time to waste on this. A reminder that straight after meeting the White Lotus and getting a night's rest they race for the airship fleet and almost lose them. There's no time to waste. If one of them were injured in even a minor way the final battle could've been far different. This comic is by far the worst offender for being inconsistent with the show
The whole time aspect of the prep of sosin's comet always weirded me out. They take one season to go to the North Pole. But travel vast distances in the finale. And this comic makes it even tighter.

Moreover, walking around proclaiming that you are "the greatest of all time" in anything, but particularly in something with no definable metric to measure greatness, is a ridiculous way to conduct oneself, period. However, in the context of Chinese Martial Arts, and East Asian Confucian Philosophies, upon which all bending is based, which stress self-discipline, restraint, and humility, such conduct is obscene.

Toph has in-depth senses to pick up Bumi every single move no matter what. That's why she can counter with precise assistance. Bumi has raw power and and experience. But, nothing gets pass the fact that Toph can adjust the adapt accordingly. Bumi and Toph are the thee top earthbending masters in their era.
Actually, she doesn't have the ability to win automatically. Toph has one fundamental and overwhelming weakness, which is glaringly obvious. She can't see anything aerial or airborne. To see, Toph must see the vibrations, particularly insofar as they connect to the earth beneath her feet.
Should Bumi make an attack from the air, he has the advantage there. Any Bender like Katara, Aang or Azula who can defy gravity, even someone like Azula, Ty Lee or Suki, who have god-tier martial arts, can defeat Toph easily. Toph is overwhelmingly strong if you fight her on her own terms, but if Toph's opponents don't fight on those terms, they can win by exploiting Toph's gaping weak point.
They actually explore this a lot in the comics.
@Toph Beifong you portray some of Toph's abilities wildly inaccurately. Toph is remarkably strong, but like the boulder she throws at Aang, she's not invincible. She has distinct weaknesses.
While Toph does have scenes where she dodges things in air and has a comic scene where she sees with shoes on, these are inconsistencies. The source material does a poor job of providing consistency in Toph's abilities, often including these things for ease, instead of having a consistent approach.
However, when Toph's ability is disected and deconstructed, in both Last Airbender, and later in Korra, Seismic sense extends from the feet into the earth, sensing vibrations. It does not work on wood, does not work on water (note the Serpent's Pass) nor on air. That is the entire point of Aang winning their fight, ans the source of Toph's nickname for Aang.
Toph also makes regular comment that she can see less clearly with shoes on. Her fight with Yaling deconstructs her ability at some length and shows her encounter considerable difficulty with even another earthbender using aerial attacks. Once Legend of Korra starts, the Seismic Sense ability is very explicitly linked to the feet and the earth.
Even Azula, when she was without bending, was such a significantly talented martial artist as to be able to evade and get past Toph, meaning Suki and Ty Lee would have no trouble either.
The early examples are not proof Toph can see in the air or on other surfaces, merely that Toph's abilities were not fully defined yet.

The way the dialogue is written for the older characters is just weird. It isn’t that iroh would never cheer on a fellow old guy in a friendly match (even if he is all about raising up the next generation, he’s never had a problem reminding them to respect their elders) it’s that he’d never say “Represent!”

They were having so much fun. For once, they could unleash without fear of killing their opponent, they could simply bend to their hearts content. They were smiling the whole way through because they'd both had found someone they could call an equal. It was both exhilarating and very surreal, no way they wouldn't get lost in the battle.
I mean, having an equal in skill is fun to play against as it makes everything more intense pushes you to your limit. It's not too easy that it wasn't a fight and not too hard that you can't tell what hit you.

and she invents metal bending too... and never seeing a sandbender in her life she learns sandbending... and catches azula off guard making her trip during the episode "The Chase"

It wasnt just picked up automatically even for her, that is not plot armor. She learned from the original earthbenders, and has a stronger connection to earth because of it. Its fleshed out and not just handed to her despite being a prodigy.
Honestly, no other Earthbender really lasted more than a minute if that in a fair fight against Toph. Bumi is out there holding his own.

This would actually be an interesting fight and I know some people would say Toph would win due to her connection to the earth and being able to sense everything Bumi would do, but Bumi also displayed an extremely rare talent by being able to Earthbend with only his face and while suspended in the air without being in physical contact with any earth. I'm sure Bumi would catch onto Toph's in ability to stop attacks from the air and could propel himself in the air then Earth bend some rocks at Toph to distract her then land a flying blow to her head.

Toph doesn't just rely on her seismic sense, but her hearing as well. I don't think Toph can't tell if someone is bending Earth at her midair, since even that dude in the arena where they found her was thwarted when he was throwing rocks at Toph while swinging on ropes.
I don't think a rematch between Toph and Bumi would end in anything other than a stalemate.

They're evenly matched in pure earthbending muscle, but Bumi is faster and more durable whereas Toph has a more solid defense. If they were to go all out, I'd say Bumi would win due to superior stamina but it would take him a while.

I would say toph is stronger in terms of earthbending muscle. When Bumi takes back Omashu we see him visibly struggle to lift up that large statue of Ozai...Toph held up a ginormous library for what must have been about 5 minutes (even though she was on sand!). + When the sandbenders are stealing appa she lets go for a moment to try and stop them and we see how quickly the library would be sinking without her! I also don't think think Bumi is definitively faster. Sure when we see her fight Toph is often stagnant because she uses neutral jing a lot as she needs it to see. Especially since when we are first introduced to her at Earth Rumble, speed is not something she needs to use to win - although that episode makes a point of showing just how insanely fast her reaction time is. Either way as she travels with the gaang she improves on her physical speed drastically. We begin to see the development at the end of season 2 - but by the day of black sun her fighting style has become much more mobile. Also, at this point in the series sand is not as much of an issue for her. I mean at the start of sozins comet when they are on the beach she is perfectly happy to be on the sand and even says "I've been working on my sandbending." So Bumi turning the ground to sand wouldn't 'blind her.' Bumi is also very loud and hearing is her secondary method of seeing anyway.
@@Eleicus the struggling to lift the statue doesn’t really apply since he wasn’t bending the statue itself but the smaller rocks he had attached to it, so using those to lift something heavier is bound to be harder
Bumi is definitely faster from the way he túnnels the ground to move instantly and how agile he was. The fact that Toph is more static only shows that she doesn’t have the movement feats.
As to the sand, we only saw her bend wet sand and the whole point is that sand doesn't transmit vibrations so that shouldn't change. Anyway the sand point if the sand point still makes more sense than the idea of a master earthbender with hundred years of experience getting taken down by something like a cloud of dust, specially since he can tunnel and has taken rock to the faces and laughed while turning them into dust himself. In contrast, Toph was getting tired in mid battlefield in the comics.
Bumi is also very unpredictable and very smart so his fast movements and power could allow him to constantly attack Toph until she got tired and her better defense failed.
@@elnombredelarosa3167 I don't think it's more difficult that the library. Bumi only did that for a few seconds. Toph was not just lifting - she was stopping something from sinking, for a longer period of time. Also the inside of the library was not entirely made of earth, ignoring the buildings structure; we are talking about shelving, millions of books and a planetarium. Although admittedly I don't think either bender would be able to perform the other's feat, not in the same way at least.
Toph has tunneled underground. She did it in bitter work. Regardless it would be unwise for Bumi to do that, considering she would actually be able to see him better that way - and potentially crush him. When she used the dust cloud at Earth Rumble 6 - one of the benders tunneled underground and it was futile. Bumi's greater advantage would be his ability to launch himself into the air (as he often does) where she can't see him. (provided he can suppress his trademark mad laughter / grunting sounds haha)
I re-watched the beach scene and they are far enough away from the water for the sand to be dry. When Zuko attacks them, he kicks up clouds of sand as he runs around destroying the sand sculptures, which likewise releases puff of dry sand into the air.
Toph showed great speed when she used her metalbending suit on the airship; and after she escaped from Xin Fu and Master Yu she neutralized them before they could even respond, then using earthbending to run back to Ba Sing Se. So she has shown she is capable of impressive speed.
I don't disagree with you on the endurance front. Bumi has shown greater endurance than Toph. But I would say Bumi is more inclined to throw a barrage of large rocks when fighting whereas Toph favours more minimal & versatile (but highly effective) techniques. I think that's in large part to conserve her energy, but it also shows her killer accuracy. I think in this comic (& the comics in general) her bending style does not translate well (I can see why, as an illustrator myself, a lot of her techniques would be difficult to show & take up more panels than they're worth). Her minimal style best shown in her fights as the as the blind bandit.
I would also say that: Bumi is more skilled on the battlefield, but toph really shines in duels, as they require less stamina.
She has also shown immense adaptability to different fighting styles and versatility in her responses to them. Her and Bumi are alike in that way. I wouldn't give either of them the edge for outside of the box thinking (even if that box is made of metal haha).
I'm not saying she would definitely win or anything! The thing about Bumi is we haven't seen nearly as much of his bending, so we can't really know for sure. It's just fun to speculate :)

One of the reasons I dislike the comics. They nerfed Toph and the other characters, and generally the plot became much weaker.
I agree the plot was not as good but you do realize toph held a library the size of a city up all by herself while it was sinking to the spirit world. She’s always been an extraordinary bender and is honestly much more powerful than bumi(mostly due to him being out of his prime but toph isn’t in her prime either) also characters like katara have also always been extremely OP the steam cloud she made in s3ep1 was a massive display of pure water bending power.

as fun as that was to listen to, I highly doubt we'll ever get a part 2, or if we do I highly doubt we'll actually get an ending to their "fight." Both Toph and Bumi are beyond incredible benders from their generation, and while it would be really cool to actually see them fight to see who would win, I have a feeling that's not something anyone's gunna be eager to make canon anytime soon...
I agree that the Iroh quote is out of place, but not for the same reason.
Although the wording itself is definitely off, I don't think it's the reaction itself is unlike him. I actually think intensity of the drawn facial expression is the most jarring part.
I mean even though he's very wise, he's also pretty goofy; as much as he's all about peace, we know he appreciates the bending arts. It's reasonable to assume that he would enjoy watching the other elements engage in friendly sparring. It also makes sense for a firebender, given the elements associations.
What is reeeeally off is the context. We know this takes place during Sozin's comet. In that episode he is probably the most serious we've ever seen him. From emotionally reuniting with Zuko, to his speech about destiny, the tone shift doesn't add up. Even if he didn't disapprove of the fight, the enthusiasm is strange.
But saying that, Sokka is also off!! Sure we know Sokka as this goofy dude, but he is serious about the war. Also...Master Piandao is right there. As much as Piandao is aware of this part of Sokka's personality - I don't think Sokka would be comfortable showing it to this extent.
Honestly I think the whole comic is unrealistic, but it's still a fun read. I wish they would have set the fight post-war.

To be fair, Toph was not too old fight, nor did she showcase that in her actions. In both the comics and TLOK, she fought.
Also, her TLOK feat especially is seriously overlooked and underrated. People forget how overpowered Kuvira's mecha tanks were. Even Bumi would've been impressed by her ability to take multiple of them down in *one swift move* with enough precision not to hurt anyone in her family who was surrounded by them. That was insanely impressive for *anyone,* let alone a bender of her age.
That said, Toph's feats against Kuvira's army in TLOK, while very impressive, fall short compared to 112-year-old Bumi's of taking down iron statues in minutes and *using them against an army.* Him being 25 years old than she was in TLOK just adds insult to injury. Furthermore, him fighting the army head-on instead of by surprise like Toph did, once again, makes him *much* stronger than she was at 86. And throwing in the fact that he was suspended in a metal coffin in midair for *months on end,* but still accomplished that, just makes it a wash in his favor. And finally, the fact that he didn't even have any back pains makes me wonder if it would even be a fight, because Bumi would smash her.
Toph at 86 is no slouch , and is definitely very impressive. Her feat of taking down that small unit of Kuvira's army, with how overpowered those robots were and *especially* up against highly skilled metalbenders as opposed to the Fire Nation's incompetent fodder or even the Dai Li, makes her very impressive.
But as it is, her feats fall way short in front of Bumi, and he rolls her easily, if not effortlessly, in a fight. He did more at an older age without the element of surprise or back pains afterward.

I honestly think it's impossible to say, or at least its a draw. Toph can feel every little shift in the earth and react accordingly which puts her leagues above even earthbending masters but bumi is in a different class. Not only is he crazy powerful, but he's able to bend with the slightest twitches, like when he broke himself out of a metal box with only his face to work with. Toph might have a harder time reacting to and countering his attacks
I think at the time of fighting bumi has more power as an earth bender. The guy can earth bend himself out of a metal coffin with just his chin and is capable of blasting firebender tanks into the sky and stacking them perfectly on top of each other etc.. and is more wise despite his goofiness.. I think toff is a greater earth bender, she is a kid still and more than likely beats bumi as she progresses in experience and age. Also inventing metal bending is awesome!

Toph is, 1. blind and uses vibrations to see, if Toph were a real person and was here she'd probably be waving her hands across her eyes right now, 2. Aang was more advanced at the time he met Toph - he had fought Bumi so had more experience with earthbending, 3. Bumi had known Aang since he was young meanwhile Toph and literally basically anyone in the ATLA universe hadn't seen airbending for a 100 years, plus Toph was pretty young so probably didn't even know much about airbending in general.
Just because Bumi is not in his prime doesn't mean he's better. He COULD be better but he's not. We're talking about this moment in the comics where Bumi and toph are fighting.
Now, onto reasons why Bumi is good/rebuttals of Toph's points?
Bumi = more experience due to old age.
Just because Bumi knew more about airbending just shows he knows more about other bending styles while toph doesn't, meaning he also is better at things Toph isn't good at and can make up for everything Toph can except for certain things (vibrations, metalbending)
Bumi has a stronger and tougher body than Toph.

While you say that Bumi knew more about airbending, that doesn't matter since this fight is about Toph vs Bumi, two earthebenders. "except for certain things," vibrations and metalbending are big things so actually matter a lot, plus even so, Toph can do all of the things Bumi can except probably better? The only thing she can't do is fight airbenders and lavabend, something Bumi can't do either.

For good reason too, Toph is one of the most powerful earthebenders, created metalbending and many other things. She also has the neutral jing, something Bumi didn't have and so he told Aang to specifically find someone who had this neutral jing.

He told Aang to find a teacher who was skilled with Neutral Jing *while he was exercising that very same Jing,* I don’t know what you’re trying to get at, Bumi has neutral Jing too, spent days to weeks in a cramped metal box waiting for the right opportunity. There’s also the fact that it took all she had to hold on to that library, Bumi has better casual feats, things that can be done effortlessly and will be more valuable in a fight than something that takes every ounce of your energy. Metal bending isn’t really much of a factor unless the fight is happening in a city or something, the standard setting for ATLA fights is usually small villages and/or wilderness, where the only thing that matters is standard Earth bending. There’s also the fact that if Toph does manage to get through his defenses, Bumi’s body can take a lot more punishment, Toph, a 4 ft something prepubescent girl will get taken out a lot quicker than Bumi, who has shown a lot of agility and resilience. And whether you believe it or not, there is such a thing as Toph bias, a member of the main cast, sassy, no nonsense, and all around awesome, Toph will be unconsciously favored by most of the fandom simply by virtue of how awesome she is and the amount of time she’s had to shine compared to Bumi.
well said. but what u said about lava bending doesn't make sense.
lava bending is a super advanced fire bending move NOT EARHBENDING. we only ever see an avatar while in the avatar state bend lava. and the only 2 avatars we ever see do it are Roku and the previous fire bending avatar.
LOK doesn't count. Its garbage and has no place in the ATLA universe. best to imagine it never happened.

I like how Zuko was the one to stop Toph from sparring. It shows how he cares about her. I don’t see them like a sibling relationship, actually more like a couple. Although, some people might think it’s strange because of the age difference the time of the series took place.

Just finished binge watching the show for the first time.
Bumi has far greater threshold of raw power and speed. He wins on very fast, overwhelming attack, utilizing a great deal of thrown projectiles to get the job done. He stacks whole tanks and leaps great distances, thinking outside the box for new attack angles. However, he seemed to recognize that his methods are his own, and aren't good for teaching, especially beginners.
In contrast, Toph manipulates the earth around her in counterattacks. A majority of her moves is about dislodging and upsetting her opponent(s), and using such manipulation for defense. Then she waits for the proper time to execute an attack. She's also a greater fighter against multiple opponents in this way, precise and expending minimal energy creativity to take out her targets. Her most powerful feat I think was stopping/slowing the library from sinking into the sand
As far as metalbending goes, Toph uses it defensively and manipulates it used as a defense or rigidity, not really for offense.
Given some metal, it would be very close, because Toph could create superior defenses against Bumi's attacks and throw him off balance and counter his avalanches and tossing boulders. Simply enclosing herself in rock or metal gives her that defensive edge she needs to hold out, upset his stance, and take him out. In the event they keep going, Toph's youth and efficiency I think will eventually out-do Bumi's raw power and stamina.
Bumi can burrow across Toph's shields and he has shown the ability to easily pierce metal

Bumi wins. I do think Toph has a great chancemof defeating him, but Bumi's raw power, experjence, and crazy earth bending that you wouldn't normally notice he's already performing can out match Toph's sensor ability. (Sensor cauz I forgot what it's really called)

He fought aang at the start of the series when all Aang had was airbending which is the opposite to earth, and by the time they met Toph he was a water bending expert. Also Toph invented metal bending

I think they’re both the most powerful earth bender in their own way, with Bumi representing the best of the old style (aka being able to bend a huge mass of boulders and rocks) and toph representing the new style (more coordinated, specific attacks with her seismic sense and metal bending)

I do think Toph is the greatest earthbender but you gotta have respect to Bumi ….. at his age he is still one of the the most powerful benders in the series but imagine him in his own prime young age, he must have been as powerful as prime Toph if not better…… besides in legend of Korra old toph is a bit weaker and she does say she can’t handle the fight anymore ( she was in her 70s while Bumi was above 100)

This is definitely going to be one hell of a rematch if they ever do it however for me you not fucking with toph just going to sit down somewhere and I feel like this would be the situation whether she's in her prime or an old woman
I read this strip like yesterday, and I absolutely hate it. This occurs during Sozen's Comet! It's awful pacing, there's absolutely no time to waste on this. A reminder that straight after meeting the White Lotus and getting a night's rest they race for the airship fleet and almost lose them. There's no time to waste. If one of them were injured in even a minor way the final battle could've been far different.
This comic is by far the worst offender for being inconsistent with the show
The whole time aspect of the prep of sosin's comet always weirded me out.
They take one season to go to the North Pole. But travel vast distances in the finale.
