how do You know the spine will fit the mating part? I would need to check with two small gage pins that fall into the spline and mic over them. Isnt inspection of the finished part just as or even more important as the machining itself? unless you have a mating part to check the fit. all the same, good job in making a tricky job simple

I worked at a local welding and machine shop during my ast 2-2.5 years of high school after school and Saturdays when the shop had enough work to be open on Saturdays. In 1974 I took the US Army Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery of testing (ASVAB). Far as I recall I max’d the mechanical portion but did poorly on the electrical/electronics portion. Though my real passion was for mechanical things I qualified for anything the Army had including Crypto to which I asked the recruiter Crypto what, knew nothing about Crypto or that it was code breaking. I was told electrical/electronics was the future and not mechanics or machine shop work. So I searched the Arm MOS books for Army Advanced Individual Training(AIT) and Military Occupational Specialities (MOS) that had good paying high demand civilian occupations/jobs. I chose a state of the art then surface to air radar missile system course that was difficult for me but I passed and was an excelling member of my duty station. Had job offers from the manufacturer of the radar and missile system before I left the Army but the wife and I wanted to return home. Went home and got a job with the owning and operating utility company at the local nuclear power station under construction. Spent 29.5 years there achieving senior technical(non-degreed) engineer for my last 22 years there. But I always missed and dreamed of machine shop work and making things with lathes, milling machines, etc. I would have lived to apprentice under the man that taught this fellow or he himself. Very interesting work and videos doung things with just a lathe that many would say no can’t be done on a lathe. America probably has very few machinist still alive from the era when mental creativity did this kind of work on manual lathes not using CNC machining to manufacture.
for me the lathe is the mother of all machines.. i don't have a diploma so it is difficult for me to find a job, in my country a diploma is very necessary to get a job.. I learned to lathe myself from working in a lathe workshop as a cleaner and helping Turner
Good work but... Bro the 3-Jaw Chuck .. On the background....The backside of the 3 Jaw chuck is sanded. You don't throw that in the dirt or on a hall floor. Just like the face plate

Well done, but the used bolt is way too soft to be turned into a gear spindle and could probably not be hardened.
