Schools don't teach alot of things. Experience gets you to the next level of abstract adaptation.
You can either hold the material and move the tool or vice versa. They do teach that.
A mill would be nice. $ometimes you have to make do.

I have read a lot of comments in this video. Negative comments, positive comments etc. Comments from rich , advanced and industrialized countries are turning it down. Yes, you can afford to buy a milling machine, that's why. And you are thinking to your self that you are so intelligent, but you did not understand what this guy in the video is trying to show you. He just want to show that there are so many operations you can do in the lathe machine, not only turning. If you are a talented latheman and you only have a lathe machine in your shop, and a drill press of course, you can do a lot of things. I am also a machinist, right now I am working onboard a ship. A shipping company has a lot of money, but in the ship's Machine Shop we only have lathe machine , drilling machine and welding equipments, but I can do whatever the chief engineer asked me to do. I can do worm gear, spur gear, internal spline, etc. This talent is very important in time of emergency when you are in the middle of the ocean. And what does these American and British chief engineers told me? They said "UNBELIEVABLE you are very talented , you save our soul". Lesson: that is the purpose of this video. Thank you and happy viewing.. from Philippines.

Мало кто знает, что токарная обработка это обработка тел вращения а фрезерная - это обработка резанием плоскостей, , при которой режущий инструмент совершает вращательное движение.

The boring head at 12:09, cleverly adjustable in two axes, is a most useful piece of work with good proportions. Elsewhere in the video can be seen how the the corners of the V ways are relieved by pre-drilled holes. Good design and well executed.
When I drove my British made Austin Mini car around the world, three suspension ball joints broke while exploring India. I fashioned new ball joints by filing up mild steel bar in a lathe, treadle powered by its owner. The car made it back to London OK via Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran etc on those parts. Westerners need to look beyond their sophistication.

Just imagine what this guy could do IF he had all the equipment as found in a modern shop? It isn't so much about equipment though in this video, ....it is the guy's innovative abilities that are truly impressive. The precision is not as important as the ingenuity and knowledge base. The first weld tack. He knows what is needed to simply avoid some spatter, but he also preheats the rod to better control the first tack. It may not seem like much, but it all adds up.😃

God himself probably cannot tell you how many men over the years have done milling operations on a lathe with simple attachments and tools. As a child I had a neighbor who built amazing steam locomotive models. His two main tools were a Lathe and a drill press. Often he built the tools he needed out of necessity. I cannot remember him ever owning a milling machine. He did have a shaper, but I never saw him use it. After he passed away my father had the job of cleaning out his shop. I was able to salvage some of his home made tools and things he built and even use much of it today for one thing or another in my shop. You sir mind me of my childhood neighbor. Clever, innovative and get things done. well done!

This is a milling operation not a turning operation. You just turned your lathe into a horizontal milling machine with sloppier movements and far less concentric toolholding though i doubt the slop nor toll centering is that big a deal when using a fly cutter welded to a shaft made out of mild steel. Still. Very resourceful for sure. And your achiving very usable surface finishes.

Everyone in the world knows how to do these completely SIMPLE techniques unless you were trying to teach us on how to abuse and ruin chucks.

You should make a adapter plate for that 3 - jaw chuck it would be nice and there not that hard to make.

This is very common. But people refrain from using a milling attachment b/c they have a mill. Also in this example, an actual milling attachment would work better not some "rotary" attachment - anyone noticed the huge chatter when boring to "size" ;)
As usual lots of things wrong with this picture - its not so much luck of tooling but luck of know how in order to get around luck of tooling. I.e. pp would have done way, way better in say Europe or US with just a lathe.

  • @ambydaly5713

It would be a lot easier and simpler to use a milling machine. If you haven’t got one then yes you can improvise, but with all that skill go get a milling machine and save a lot of time machining components.

This applies only to small machine shops that has no sufficient money to buy a milling machine. I'm also a machinist working onboard a ship . A shipping company has a big money, but only about 10% of the ships in the whole world has a milling machine. If you are a talented machinist ,you can do your job even you only have lathe machine onboard. I have already made a lot of things onboard a ship by using only lathe machine like: worm gear (for gangway hoist) spur gear, internal spline (having 64 teeth), etc.

Egyedi gyártás esetén megfelel, sorozatgyártás esetén gazdaságtalan. Sorozatgyártásnál a maró- és fúrógép alkalmazását nehéz elkerülni.
