  • 1914 Irving Cocktail By Jacques Straub - Cocktails After Dark
Today we delve back into our collection of old cocktail books to make this Jacques Straub cocktail. Jacques Straub was a barman at the Pendennis Club; but we're not sure if this was a Pendennis Club Cocktail.
    Irving Cocktail.
    ½ jigger dry gin.
    ¼ jigger calisaya.
    ¼ jigger French vermouth.
    1 slice orange. Shake.

Glen - regarding Dillion's changes... a) They were bought out by Mark Anthony Group in early 2021, b) During the initial part of the pandemic they used the facility to make hand sanitizer with aloe and other products which may have some sort of obscure impact on flavor with subsequent batches of gin, and c) they are a small batch distillery so I would think that there is significant room for variation outcome both in terms of ingredients but also process-wise as well.

Poor Glen, he seems so distressed! I hope things work out with the gin. It’s so upsetting when they change things you love

Madison park is an amazing distillery, and based out of Montreal. Their "Breakfast Gin" is definitely worth a try for every gin lovers! I myself own three bottles, and plan on getting at least one bottle everytime I go out there.

It's always fun to watch your reactions and to see how they differ. Perhaps put some kind of wine glass marker or even just tie a small ribbon around one of the glasses so that you don't get them mixed up. Suggestion.

So when you first pointed out the drinks you got them in the wrong order. What you thought was Dillon was the Maddison Park. 😅 I think it would be helpful to have the bottle placed on either side of your drink after you pour 😂. Loved it! Keeping us on our toes lol

As always I loved this... and I'm not much of a cocktail drinker. I like the history of it all, I suppose, and of course you two. In any case, I wanted to ask if you changed your mic setup for this shoot? I noticed the incidental sounds a bit more, for example the sounds that came through when you sipped the cocktail. I just wanted to alert you that some setting may have diverged from the past in this one, which may or may not be intentional. In terms of effect, I am pretty neutral!

I've found that 99% of the time if a product has changed its label and/or it's name even slightly there's been a change in the recipe,, usually it means they found a way to make it cheaper...
Also,,, lol ,, the way you do it with unmarked glasses I would never keep up with it .....

Yo Glen! Dillon's has two main gins now. The one you have is the 7 which I believe is a higher proof gin with fewer botanicals. I think the one you are wanting is the 22 which is lower poof with more botanicals. Grab a bottle of gin 22 and compare!

the Isabelle sounds nice, grenadine & crème de cassis. One of the highlights of going to France as a child for me was the availability of grenadine based drinks ie cordials that we just didn't have here the UK

I would highly recommend Seaweed Gin, produced by the Newfoundland Distilling Company. It has won numerous awards at thrinternational level...as well as the hearts of my gin-loving friends

I often find orange juice cocktails a lil flat or dead, but recently started acid adjusting the orange juice. The blood and sand has gone from so-so to great!

From what I saw, the one with the Dillon's gin was more orange in color. And after that last taste, the glasses switched places.

Maybe it would be improved with an orange super juice as an additional ingredient? That could enhance the orange flavor and add the acid that it seems to be lacking.

I wish they’d try Concord Grape juice spiked with gin, as served to party guests by foolish characters in a Robertson Davies novel (Leaven of Malice, I think). Is it really as horrible as it sounds?

Glen if you can get your hands on a bottle of Barr Hill Tomcat Gin I'd be curious to hear your take on it. Its a barrel aged gin made from raw honey. I tried it a while back and found it to be very unique, something like a cross between gin and whiskey.

I wonder if the reason the taste is off is because you are using vermouth which is try, with a dry gin. Perhaps that's contributing to the lack of flavor?

    • @GlenAndFriendsCooking
      @GlenAndFriendsCooking  ปีที่แล้ว +11

The recipe does ask for a Dry / French vermouth - but there are Dry / French vermouths that have a perceived sweetness that is higher than Sweet / Italian vermouth. The Calisaya does bring a lot of sweetness, though it is masked by the bitter component.
This could be a great cocktail, if we could find the 'right' combo of brands for our palette.

I do wonder why it’s called the Irving. Literary connection with Washington Irving? The name became popular with Jewish immigrants to the U. S.: a lot named their sons Irving. Something else? No idea.
